Religion of Peace: The Muslim way, Death Threats, to Michael Smith 4BC announcer.

Hijab row leads to death threats

THE Brisbane radio announcer who suggested the hijab be removed in banks and shops has received death threats.

4BC announcer Michael Smith on Wednesday said wearing a face-covering such as some Muslim women do posed a security risk because it made identification difficult in the event of a crime.

Wearing a face-veil in certain places, such as shopping centres, was also offensive and scared little children, he said.

In a recorded threat on the station website a caller says "you're head is on a plate (expletive beeped). You're going to be dead soon

(expletive beeped), racist bitch''.

Station general manager David McDonald today said most of the calls seemed to emanate from Sydney and he said Smith's original comments had been taken out of context.

"This has been really blown out of total proportion,'' Mr McDonald said.

"There was never any racism in this at all. There was nothing about religion, it was all about purely security and safety issues.''

Mr McDonald said Mr Smith's call was only to show the face, not to remove headwear.

"A lot of criminals have used this to sort of disguise themselves.''

Mr Smith, an ex-policeman, was aware of the trauma robberies cause, Mr McDonald said.

"It was never about racism.

Complaints, both to official channels and those phoned in to the radio station, were based on media interpretations of Mr Smith's comments rather than the comments themselves, the general manager said.

"That is extremely disappointing that it's been hijacked for other purposes.''

Mr McDonald said upset staff had been counselled and security stepped up.

On the station's website Mr Smith defends his comments.

"It seems this country's media finds it difficult to talk sensibly about certain topics,'' today's entry reads.

"I've been branded a racist in writing by a major national television network who should know better.
``How could anyone say that my comments were racist?''
Queensland police acknowledged that a complaint had been made by the radio station and said it was under investigation.

Cafe owner 'breached 'human rights' kicking out Israelis

An Invercargill cafe owner's refusal to serve Israelis on the basis of their nationality is a clear human rights breach, Race Relations Commissioner Joris de Bres says.

Sisters Natalie Bennie and Tamara Shefa were upset after being booted out of the Mevlana Cafe in Esk St yesterday by owner Mustafa Tekinkaya.

They chose to eat at Mevlana Cafe because it had a play area for Mrs Bennie's two children, but they were told to leave before they had ordered any food, Mrs Bennie said.

"He heard us speaking Hebrew and he asked us where we were from. I said Israel and he said 'get out, I am not serving you'. It was shocking."

Mr Tekinkaya, who is Muslim and from Turkey, said he was making his own protest against Israel because it was killing innocent babies and women in the Gaza Strip.

"I have decided as a protest not to serve Israelis until the war stops."

He said he had nothing against Israeli people but if any more came into his shop they would also be told to leave, and he was not concerned if he lost business.

Mr de Bres said the Human Rights Act prohibited discrimination in the provision of goods and services on the grounds of ethnic or national origin, or of political opinion.

"Whatever the rights and wrongs of the situation in Palestine, it is simply against the law for providers of goods and services in New Zealand to discriminate in this way," he said.

Mr Tekinkaya's stance was supported by neighbouring Turkish Kebabs shop owner Ali Uzun, who said he was also refusing to serve Israelis.

Mrs Bennie said she did not disagree that Israel was committing crimes against children.

"I just don't think I should be declined service because I am from Israel."

She had rung the Human Rights Commission and was told the cafe owner's actions were against the law because he was discriminating on the basis of ethnicity.

"I wouldn't mind having a chat to him. Someone has to put him in his place," Mrs Bennie said.

Ms Shefa is visiting Mrs Bennie at her Makarewa home, on the outskirts of Invercargill, where she lives with her New Zealand husband and two children.

Both women said they had travelled widely, and to places much more hostile than New Zealand, but had never been treated in such a way.

Invercargill Mayor Tim Shadbolt was shocked when told of the incident.

"Oh my god, the Gaza Strip has come to Invercargill. Hell's bells."

He said he was bewildered.

"Generally speaking I am against all wars and I suppose people have got a right to protest. I couldn't really deny that. It would have been upsetting for the women and I feel sympathy for them."

Mr Tekinkaya says he is happy the women have complained loudly about his actions, as that is exactly what he wanted. He says he enjoyed the reaction when he refused them service.

"One woman I didn't serve made huge noise. I love it, I love it - it's how I want it to be."

Cardinal warns Roman Catholic women against marrying Muslim men'

A PORTUGESE cardinal has warned Roman Catholic women against marrying Muslim men.

"Be careful with love. Think twice before marrying a Muslim, think seriously because it brings loads of hassle - and even Allah can't say where all that will end,'' Jose Policarpo, the Cardinal Patriarch of Lisbon, said during a public debate.

"When you recognise what a young European of Christian upbringing is subjected to, given Muslim attitudes to women, the first time she goes to their countries, we can imagine what that entails.

"You can only dialogue with someone who is willing to dialogue. With our Muslim brothers, for example, dialogue is very difficult,'' he said.

"We have taken the first steps, but it's extremely difficult - because for them, their truth is the only way.''

Around 40,000 Muslims live in Portugal, according to Lisbon's Islamic community leaders - who have yet to react to the cardinal's remarks.

A spokesman for Portugal's episcopal community, Manuel Marujao, said that Policarpo was offering "realistic advice'' which he said amounted neither to "discrimination nor contempt for another culture or religion'', according to the Catholic news agency Ecclesia.
