Sydney's Occupied Territories: Sheik refused bail after accessory to murder charges laid in Burwood Court

'Sheikh' in court on woman 'set alight'

A self-styled sheikh who sent offensive letters to the families of dead Australian soldiers has faced court in connection to the murder of a woman.

Man Haron Monis, 59, fronted Burwood Local Court charged with being an accessory before and after the fact to the murder of a woman allegedly stabbed and set alight in a western Sydney stairwell earlier this year.

Monis, also known as Sheikh Haron, was arrested along with a woman who earlier on Friday was charged with murder.

Dressed in black tracksuit pants and with a beard, Monis didn't apply for bail and it was formally refused by Magistrate Christopher Longley.

Emergency workers found the woman's body in the Werrington apartment block on April 21 after responding to a fire.

The 30-year-old had allegedly been stabbed multiple times and set alight.

Police say the three people knew each other.

Amirah Droudis, who is believed to be the partner of Monis, was charged with murdering Noleen Hayson Pal.

She sat quietly in the dock, wearing a black blouse and with her long dark hair out.

Her lawyer said she wouldn't apply for bail and it was formally refused.

The pair will appear in Penrith Local Court on November 22.

Monis was previously sentenced to 300 hours of community service and placed on a two-year good behaviour bond for 12 counts of using a postal service to cause offence.

Droudis was sentenced to a two-year bond for aiding and abetting him.

Monis had sent offensive letters to the grieving families of seven soldiers killed in Afghanistan between 2007 and 2009.

The self-employed spiritual adviser and astrologer also wrote to the family of trade official Craig Senger, who was killed in the 2009 Marriott Hotel bombing in Jakarta.

In the letters, Monis likened soldiers to murderers and killers, and in one letter said a digger was going to hell.

Christopher Muronzi sentenced to at least three years jail for infecting former partner with HIV

A SYDNEY man found guilty of infecting a former lover with HIV will spend at least the next three years behind bars.

Zimbabwean-born Chris Muronzi, 44,  was this morning sentenced in Sydney's District Court to four-and-a-half years in jail, with a non-parole period of three years, after he failed to tell a former partner that he was infected with the disease.

The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, began a nine-month relationship with Muronzi in late 2002 but did not discover she was infected until June 2004.

By that time she had already passed the disease on to her new partner.

She only discovered Muronzi carried the disease when she rang him to tell him of her diagnosis.

Muronzi, who was diagnosed with HIV in 1995 and was undergoing treatment, pleaded guilty to maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm on the woman.

At a sentencing hearing Judge Penelope Hock said Mr Muronzi's actions had taken a "devastating" emotional and physical toll on the victim.

His actions had "serious consequences, not only for the complainant, but for the community in general," Justice Hock said.

After coming to terms with the impacts of the disease, which she described "as a 10 on the scale", the woman eventually went to police in 2011.

Muronzi will be eligible for parole in September 2016.

Sydney's Occupied Territories raided by Officers from the Middle Eastern Organised Crime squad

Brothers 4 Life rifle seized in raid

POLICE have seized an assault rifle believed to be linked to the Brothers 4 Life gang during a raid on a home in Sydney's south west this morning.

Officers from the Middle Eastern Organised Crime squad found the SKS semiautomatic assault rifle and a 30-round magazine hidden under a bush in the backyard of the Liverpool home after police executed a search about 10.45am.

Police said the weapon had a modified grip, which made it easier to hide or shoot for the hip.

Police arrested a 29-year-old man who lived at the scene.

Deputy commissioner Nick Kaldas said it was concerning that such high-powered weaponry was potentially in the hands of criminals.

"Any semi automatic weapon is very dangerous because you simply don't have to stop and reload or anything else,'' Mr

Kaldas said "When we have seen mass shooting incidents in the US and other places usually this type of weapon has been involved.''

The gun is now being analysed to determine whether it has been used in any shootings.

Officers were tipped off to the location of the assault rifle and Middle Eastern Organised Crime squad acting superintendent Steve Patton said cracks were appearing in the gang's wall of silence, which has long frustrated police.

"We've still got a way to go but as time goes on we are receiving more and more,'' Mr Patton said.

"It's absolutely encouraging, but we still need more.''

Last night police charged another Brothers 4 Life member with three counts of attempted murder the shooting of another gang member in Bankstown last week.

The 37-year-old is the fourth person to be charged over the shooting.

The man is expected to appear in Burwood Local Court early next year.

The man is the 11th Brothers 4 Life member to be arrested in recent days - but police were not yet ready to declare victory.

"We believe membership of Brothers 4 Life is in the dozens not the hundreds, but it is a very fluid group,'' Mr Kaldas said.

"I wouldn't say we're ripping them apart but I would say we've arrested and charged a number of their leadership and I would hope and think that it would have an impact on the way they operate.''

THE Hyde Park rioter who made headlines earlier this year when he refused to stand for a judge has been granted bail after appealing a jail term handed down to him today.

Mohammed Issai Issaka walked free from Downing Local Court after appealing a sentenced of 12 months in jail with a non-parole period of six months for taking part in last September's riots.

He was also given three months jail for the charge of resist arrest and six months jail for assaulting a police officer, both of which will be served concurrently.

In sentencing the father of eight Magistrate Jacqueline Milledge said that while Issaka was a man of "otherwise impeccable character" his "lack of contrition" for his actions on the day gave her concern.

"I can't look at you as someone who has learnt from this event and would not revisit it" Magistrate Milledge said. "The courts have to say to people like you who overstep the mark that your behaviour cannot be accepted."

Mgstr Milledge said that Isaaka was "frontline" throughout the riots as an inflaming presence - even causing distress to other peaceful protesters.

"They're were trying to bring about calm and you weren't to be calmed," she said. "You frustrated them as well."

"You weren't just someone who was there to demonstrate."

Isaaka will be eligible for release on May 15, 2014.

Pious Muslim cleric, Uthman Badar Warns Australian's it will be OUR fault if Muslims blow us up.

An act of terror on Australian soil will be the fault of the government, says Muslim cleric Uthman Badar

A RADICAL Sydney Muslim has warned an act of terrorism on home soil is possible - and it will be the fault of the Australian government.

MUSLIMS "have an obligation" to target Australian troops in Afghanistan…” Islamic Swine declares at Hizb ut-Tahrir’s ASSASSINS Conference at Lidcombe, in Sydney’s no go zone aka.“Occupied Territories”

Hizb ut-Tahrir spokesman Uthman Badar distributed a dossier accusing the government's counter-terrorism laws of unfairly targeting the Muslim community.

He also claimed the government was deliberately trying to antagonise Muslims into reacting violently.

"An act of violence or terrorism is possible by someone who can't be controlled," Badar said yesterday.

"These laws and the surveillance tactics of ASIO and counter-counter terrorism police is begging for a reaction from disenfranchised Muslims. The government should be warned."

Federal Attorney-General George Brandis last night said there would be an investigation into the disturbing comments that were made ahead of the group's annual conference on Sunday at Lidcombe.

"Australia has strong laws against urging violence and inciting terrorism and any accusation of this will be investigated," Senator Brandis said.

Hizb ut-Tahrir is known around the globe as a "prescribed terrorist" group and is banned in Germany and in many Middle East countries.

On Anzac Day eve last year, Hizb ut-Tahrir outraged many Australians with the headline "Anzac Day is not for Muslims" on its website.

It attacked the soldiers who fought at Gallipoli, saying it was a military failure and said Australians were responsible for indiscretions such as burning the belongings of locals in Egypt, brawling, getting drunk and rioting, and contracting venereal diseases due to time spent in local brothels.

Mr Badar came to Australia when he was three and grew up in western Sydney.

He is currently doing a PHD in economics at Sydney University. He said his group was not concerned about a vow by Prime Minister Tony Abbott when in opposition that the movement would be outlawed once he got into power.

"He was just playing to the electorate and we are not worried," Mr Badar said.

The jailing of a number of Muslims, including those involved in a plot to blow up Holsworthy Army barracks, was again the fault of the government, he claimed.

One police source said Hizb ut-Tahrir "pushes the boundaries" in an attempt to appear relevant.

"Many members are educated young Australians, but their views are extreme and they have been banned in some places," the source said.
