"The chief weapon in the quiver of all Islamist expansionist movements, is the absolute necessity to keep victims largely unaware of the actual theology plotting their demise. To complete this deception, a large body of ‘moderates’ continue to spew such ridiculous claims as “Islam means Peace” thereby keeping non-Muslims from actually reading the Qur’an, the Sira, the Hadith, or actually looking into the past 1400 years of history. Islamists also deny or dismiss the concept of ‘abrogation’, which is the universal intra-Islamic method of replacing slightly more tolerable aspects of the religion in favor of more violent demands for Muslims to slay and subdue infidels"

Hage-Ali's cocaine arrest victory

Former Young NSW Australian of the Year  who has admitted being a cocaine addict, was suing the State Government over allegations she was a drug dealer. Copy of 14 10 09 Hage-Ali's cocaine arrest victory

FORMER NSW Young Australian of the Year, Iktimal Hage-Ali, has won a claim for damages after a judge found she was arrested and detained unlawfully by police on suspicion of supplying cocaine.

The 26-year-old, who relinquished her title after her cocaine addiction was made public in 2007, was awarded just under $19,000 in the District Court.

Hage-Ali - a former member of John Howard's Youth Advisory Committee - was arrested by officers from the Middle Eastern Organised Crime Squad investigating drug-use in south-west Sydney after police recorded her ordering cocaine from her supplier Mohammed "Bruce'' Fahda.

She was taken to Bankstown Police Station and held for several hours before being released without charge.

During her time in custody, she claimed she was subjected to threats and racial vilification from the police in an attempt to coerce her into giving them information about her dealings with Fahda.

Hage-Ali, who was working for the Attorney General's department at the time, agreed to turn police witness, however she insisted the drugs were for her own use, telling police: ``I'm just a f.....g addict.''

In evidence, she told the court she began using drugs heavily late in 2006 to cope with her feelings of depression.

"My father and my brother weren't too happy about me speaking on Muslim issues. I've always spoken far too much,'' she said.

She also told the court she felt down because her family didn't approve of the man she wanted to marry.

Before she agreed to a police interview, Hage-Ali claims Detective Inspector Stephen Patton told her it was in her best interest to withdraw her nomination for the national Young Australian of the Year because she ``didn't deserve it.''

The trial heard Hage-Ali purchased 13.5g of cocaine from Fahda over 11 weeks and police had evidence in text messages and phone calls of her ordering on behalf of friends.

However, she told police she was lying to Fahda and the drugs were for herself.

Judge Michael Elkaim found that police did not have to resort to arresting Ms Hage-Ali, who was a person of outstanding character with strong ties to the community and an unlikely flight risk.

He accepted the submission of her counsel, Greg Melick, SC, that the police had a number of alternatives at their discretion, including issuing her with a court attendance notice, before arrest was strictly necessary.

He awarded her $18,700, comrised of $7,000 for compensatory damages for her unlawful arrest and $7,500 for a combination of aggravated and exemplary damages, plus interest at 10 per cent for the time elapsed since the incident.

October 11, 2009 - 2:36PM

Craig Alexander has made history at the Hawaiian Ironman, becoming the first Australian to win triathlon's most famous race twice.

Alexander also became only the fourth man to successful defend the overall title at Hawaii when he won in eight hours 20 minutes and 21 seconds.

Copy of 11 10 09 Aussie makes history at Hawaiian Ironman

In another great day for Australia at Hawaii, first-timer Mirinda Carfrae finished second in the women's race.

Great British phenomenon Chrissie Wellington broke the women's race record with an incredible time of 8:54.02, about 20 minutes ahead of Carfrae.

It is the fourth-straight year an Australian has won Hawaii, with Michellie Jones taking out the women's title in 2006 and Chris McCormack successful in 2007.

McCormack recovered from a rough patch during the run to finish fourth, four minutes and 59 seconds behind Alexander.

American Chris Lieto led until just under 10km left and he finished a gutsy second, two minutes and 35 seconds behind Alexander, while German Andreas Raelert was third.

Australian Pete Jacobs has had a breakthrough race, finishing eighth in 8:30.15.

Australia's other Hawaiian Ironman champion is Greg Welsh, who won in 1994.

The race is held in brutally-hot conditions on the Big Island of Hawaii and consists of a 3.8km swim, 180km cycle and 42.2km run, with about 1800 triathletes competing.

A test of ones ability that is judged on what the individual actually does or achieves.

How long before Hussein Obama decrees that all of the participants are entitled to the first place getters medal regardless of wether they finished the race or not, in the interests of equity and social justice?

I’m with the Taliban

Why I’m with Hamas and the Taliban

Piers Akerman
News.com.au
Saturday, October 10, 2009

WHEN it comes to awarding US President Barack Obama with the Nobel Peace Prize, I’m with the Taliban!

The terrorists think it stinks (Hamas does, too) and I believe he shouldn’t have come within cooee of the purse.

The Nobel for Medicine is awarded on results, not to a recent medical graduate who aspires to find a cancer cure.

Nor is the prize for Literature handed to someone who has written the first paragraph of what they think will be a masterpiece.

That’s how it should be, but the Nobel Peace Prize Committee doesn’t live in the real world.

Look at previous winners such as Yasser Arafat in 1994.

The father of modern Middle Eastern terrorism was at least engaged in peace talks (he signed the Oslo Accords) though 15 years on nothing has really changed.

Or the 2001 award to former UN boss Kofi Annan, on whose watch possibly 800,000 Rwandans were slaughtered.

North Vietnam’s Le Duc Tho had the grace to refuse to share the 1973 award with Henry Kissinger, becoming the only nominee to reject the glittering prize. His scruples were genuine the communist North were planning their major invasion.

Obama, on the other hand, is still dithering about whether to send more troops to Afghanistan (he should), but he took the prize without a blink.

In office for less than nine months, Obama could have just moved into the White House after his January 20 inauguration, mere days before the Nobel nominations closed last February 1.

What has he done, then, to deserve anything?

The chairman of the prize committee, former Norwegian PM (coincidentally the only male on board) Thorbjorn Jagland said: ``We have on many occasions given it to try and enhance what personalities were trying to do.’’

When asked whether it was premature, he said: ``It could be too late to respond three years from now. It is now that we have the opportunity to respond, all of us, I hope it will help him.’’

Sounds like Norway runs on the basis of handing out elephant stamps for encouragement rather than marking people on their performance.

Even the AP White House Correspondent Jennifer Loven, not known for her critical views on the Obama presidency, noted that it has actually barely begun.

“He won! For what?’’ she wrote. ``Work on the President’s ambitious agenda, both at home and abroad, is barely under way, much less finished.

“He has no standout moment of victory that would seem to warrant a verdict as sweeping as that issued by the Nobel committee.’’

As for peace, she noted that he is currently running two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and cannot get a climate change bill through his own Congress.

If he was being graded, his scorecard would read: “Incomplete.’’ The award illustrates a number of serious problems that currently exist - not only in the Peace Prize process - but globally.

The principal flaw is the readiness to accept spin over substance.

Obama has promised the world but has not delivered anything significant.

His list of ``incomplete’’ projects includes the pledge to close the prison at Guantanamo Bay, already slipping behind and unlikely to meet his own January, 2010 deadline.

Then there are his others: his failure to bring home US troops from Iraq; his failure to deal with the real threat of Iran developing nuclear weapons; his failure to even lay the groundwork for a new peace initiative between the Israelis and Palestinians. As for a nuclear-free world, see Iran.

Then there is climate change, which he sees as a ``priority’’, unlike our own Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, who sees the issue of man-made carbon dioxide as the biggest moral issue facing the world.

It seems highly unlikely that Obama will have anything to present to his fans on this issue in Copenhagen come December.

He could always call former US vice-president Al Gore to deliver one of his emotion-rich but fact-lite speeches on the topic, bearing in mind the Nobel committee awarded him a Peace Prize in 2007(in conjunction with the dodgy IPCC) for his claptrap.

The Nobel committee seems to be sending a politically correct affirmative action love note to the Left in the US and elsewhere, applauding voters for electing a black man, albeit, one who has kindled divisions in his own country to such an extent that his opponents are starting to protest against his policies with a vehemence which may one day equal that of Obama’s own more extremist supporters.

That Obama has marked his presidency by attempts to define down the power and global leadership clearly appealed to the Eurovision team, tired of America being the world’s greatest

nation and shamed by having to appeal to the might of the US to resolve conflicts that have been beyond the capacity of the UN, or the European Union or any other multilateral bodies to deal with.

But if an “E’’ for effort mark, or an “H’’ for hope, is going to win what was once the world’s most prestigious prize, it’s time the Nobel Committee was told of Wilson Tuckey’s efforts to broker peace in the Liberal Party, and Mick Gatto’s mediation efforts in Melbourne’s gangland.

We have plenty of Australians just as worthy of this award as the new chum in the White House.

Great Wall utes fail to star in crash tests

Philip King
The Australian
September 29, 2009

CHINESE vehicles have a cloud over their safety credentials after the first imports to Australia performed woefully in local crash tests.

Utes made by Great Wall Motors scored just two stars and "failed to protect the driver and passenger from injury" due to loss of structural integrity, according to the test body.

"The results for the Great Wall vehicles were particularly disappointing as these are new models to the market," ANCAP chairman Lauchlan McIntosh said yesterday.

He said many commercial vehicles were now achieving crash test results of four or five stars and offered safety comparable with passenger cars.

"Crash statistics show that occupants of one or two-star vehicles have twice the risk of receiving life-threatening injuries in a crash compared with four or five-star vehicles," he said.

The Proton Jumbuck ute, imported from Malaysia, performed even worse, attaining just a one-star rating although it is about to replaced by a new model.

The Great Wall Motors utes, the first Chinese-brand vehicles to be imported to Australia, reached showrooms in July and 500 have been sold.

The poor result risks reigniting controversy over the safety of Chinese-made vehicles, which flared in Europe when the first export SUVs, badged Landwind, crumpled in crash tests four years ago.

According to local importer Ateco Automotive, the Great Wall result was solid and had nothing in common with the unofficial Landwind tests.

"This is the first official NCAP test of a Chinese vehicle anywhere," Ateco Automotive spokesman Daniel Cotterill said.

"The tests done in Europe some years ago made spectacular video but to what standards, who knows. Our utes don't look anything like that."

A Great Wall engineer witnessed the tests and the Chinese were already working on improvements to the utes, he said.

Roman Polanski.

She Could Have Died, Roman

By Judith Reisman
10-5-9

I've written often about pedophile Polanski, but since he was arrested in Zurich as a fugitive fleeing the U.S. for child rape, here's a quick review.

In 1977, filmmaker Roman Polanski tricked, stripped, drugged, raped and brutally sodomized a 13-year old, 7th grade girl. Convicted of these atrocities, he fled the U.S. to work and play in freer, gayer France. He escaped because once the judge got some additional facts, his plea bargain (to save the child additional media attack) was deemed invalid.

His biographer, Thomas Kiernan reports Polanski's crimes in The Roman Polanski Story. Roman "broke open a bottle of champagne The youngster hesitated, telling him that the last time she had drunk champagne it had made her violently ill. She was asthmatic, she said that the bubbly had brought on an asthma attack."

Polanski tells her French champagne "could never hurt you." She drinks a glass to placate him.

Soon "she felt her lungs beginning to constrict." Polanski says "jump in hot tub It make you feel better."
"I really don't feel good," she says, "[S]houldn't've had champagne She complained again about her dizziness and shortness of breath He gave her a tablet and told her to take it, assuring her

that it would counter the effects of the champagne."
The police report continues. "[D]utifully, the girl swallowed the tablet." He didn't "tell her that the tablet was not an antiasthma pill but a high-potency [illegal] Quaalude from his own pocket

The girl was in a deep champagne-Quaalude daze slipping into unconsciousness."
"She was shivering and ashen and weeping I'm sick," she mumbled drunkenly. I want to go home my father gasping for breath in shrill, raspy heaves. Mucus spilled from her nostrils."

She lost bladder control and is feverish. Polanski worries that he might be stuck with a "naked American teenager in the throes of a potentially fatal seizure." He "wondered whether he should call an ambulance or the police. He decided to wait."

Why no ambulance!! In a film, should she die, his Hollywood friends might help dump the body.
Still, not to waste a rape opportunity, Polanski painfully sodomized and raped the half unconscious child. "With her breathing still impaired by the effects of the Quaalude and champagne, she immediately gagged and retched. She tried to scream but couldn't produce a sound."
Eventually, she revived. He drove the child home, leaving her at the front door.
Now those who have followed Roman know he regularly rapes, well, sodomizes, children. Kiernan reported that "Roman just couldn't understand why screwing a kid should be of concern to anyone. He's screwed plenty of girls younger than this one, he said, and nobody gave a damn."
Roman was a victim of our "excessively prudish petite bourgeoisie."
I remember a French photo story of Roman with pubescent girls he seduced and dumped.

Kiernan quotes Roman shouting, "I love young girls very young girls."
To offset people's general revulsion, Polanski has a pubic relations campaign that constantly plays on his tragic WWII childhood. He was born Jewish. He lived during the Holocaust. (In my view, he filmed The Pianist to exploit the Holocaust as a self promoting 'pity Polanski' PR ad.) In fact, Roman went to make a film in Israel, but the Israeli government wouldn't let him set foot on Israeli soil.
Elsewhere I've written of Polanski's response to the murder of his young wife, Sharon Tate, by Charles Manson's satanic cult. In brief.
Since Roman used girls in their marriage bed, the spousal relationship was, well, tense.

Roman sold pictures of his naked wife to Playboy to tantalize millions of lusting men (was Manson one of the millions?). When she was pregnant, Polanski humiliated Tate in public, calling her "a dumb hag" and similar endearments.
Polanski partied in London, often with his Arab sheiks. He planned to remain until the baby was born. "Then maybe I could go back and find Sharon the way she used to be."
His biographer says he was "sipping champagne, passing a marijuana cigarette around when he heard his wife and baby were stabbed to death in a satanic ritual" by the Manson cult.

Poor Polanski flew back to "pose at the entrance of the death house for Life magazine a week after the slaughter. He charged Life $5,000 for this picture."
Touching.

Recapping. In 1977, filmmaker Roman Polanski, an infamous Hollywood pedophile, got caught.

He'd done nothing more than drug, rape, sodomize and almost kill a 7th-grade child. Based on his sadistic sexual history, there was nothing new in that, so he was outraged by his arrest.
Convicted of his ruthless near sadosexual murder, the mean judge told Polanski he could get 50 years -- but he'd be paroled certainly.

Thus did Roman flee to France to continue being a lionized pedophile filmmaker.
The Swiss arrested him recently as a fugitive from the U.S. If he is returned to California and sent to the clink -- with all those big, mean guys for his remaining years -- well, that actually starts to sound like justice.

Dr. Reisman is a former principal investigator for the U.S. Department of Justice, Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. Her last book was Kinsey: Crimes and Consequences-The Red Queen and the Grand Scheme. She runs drjudithreisman.com

Roman Polanski :Hollywood’s finest stand behind (that would be a lot safer than in front of I guess) their beloved and most infamous Paedophile and Child Sodomizer (so far that we know of) Hooray for Hollywood!!!!!

SKIN CANCER Claims Hayley Birch

Air girl's skin cancer death at just 25

The Daily Telegraph
October 03, 2009 12:58PM

AN air hostess whose job meant she could sunbathe in Australia and all over the world has died of skin cancer at 254 10 09 Air girl's skin cancer death at just 25

Hayley Birch had worked for Virgin Atlantic for four years and topped up her tan at resorts around the globe in her free time.

She sunned herself in hotspots such as Dubai, Australia and Hong Kong.

But she has lost an 18-month battle with cancer - dying just days before a fundraising ball she organised after being told she was terminally ill.

The event will still go ahead tonight, with auction prizes donated by celebs including chef Marco Pierre White, 47 - who became pals with Hayley at another charity fundraiser.

Last night heartbroken mum Penny Birch said Hayley's glamorous job meant she "probably had more sun that most people".

But Penny, of Solihull, West Midlands, added: "She was naturally dark and never overdid it. She was always careful to make sure she didn't burn. It just seems so cruel and unfair."

In December 2007 Hayley discovered a mole on her leg. Tests revealed it was cancerous and it was removed.

Penny said: "We thought that was the end of it, but six months later Hayley found a lump in her groin. She had that removed and the cancer reappeared in her stomach, then in her neck and armpits."

She added: "Hayley never once asked how long she had left - she just threw herself into fundraising."

Australian Girls and Guys please note the tragic story above.

Quentin Bryce, Australia’s very own affirmative action “idiot in search of a village” Rudd insider and part time Australian Governor General.

"All Australians will be distressed by the terrible news of the tsunami in Samoa, the earthquake in Indonesia and the typhoon in the Philippines," she told reporters at her Sydney residence Admiralty House on Thursday.

"Australia is home to 40,000 Samoans and I know that we will all come together to support them during this very worrying time for them and their families.

"We Australians are no strangers to natural disasters and this is the time for us to return the generous support that we received in Victoria during the bushfires."

Full Story HERE

WTF? What support? from who? when?

Is this woman totally insane? Is she so far into Australia’s very own Messiah’s inner sanctum, the “Kevin 07 Rudd”,Socialist Labor Party, elitist parallel universe, that she actually believes that Australian Victorian Bush Fire victims of 2009 owe Indonesians and Samoans a debt, because, they, in HER mind, contributed to the 2009 Victorian Bush Fire Disaster Appeal?

Like America, Australia pays its own way, there are no telethons banging away in outer Mongolia or Iraq or Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Syria,Indonesia or the entire fricking Middle East,or Europe ,with host’s staring into TV cameras, dripping tears of blood for Americans or Australians who have been burned alive or buried alive, blown into a million pieces or drowned following some natural disaster or some “miss understanding”of the Koran

Australia has already given 1 BILLION Australian DOLLARS to the worlds largest Muslim Nation,Indonesia, following their 2004  Tsunami, on top of the HALF BILLION DOLLARS Australian TAX PAYERS donate EVERY year to Indonesia in the name of Foreign Aid.

Does this career “idiot in search of a village” & affirmative action, Rudd “inner circle” token female,Feminist LOON & Socialist apologist, really think that AUSTRALIANS were the recipients of donations from Indonesia?, the worlds largest Muslim Nation, sworn to eliminate, at all, and any opportunity, the Judeo Christian nation to their south that they call SOUTH Irian, the rest of the world calls it AUSTRALIA, so how much did the Indonesians donate to the Victorian bush fire disaster of 2009? How much did the Samoan’s donate to the Victorian bush fire disaster of 2009?

Call me crazy but as far as I know the Australian public, donated over 300 MILLION Dollars to this cause in 2009.

No mention of money from the shit dirt poor of Muslim Indonesia or the “Island Paradise”of Samoa, with, oh so many, many of their citizens living in Australia receiving Social security benefits donating part of their Australian taxpayer provided income to the Victorian Bush Fire  disaster of 2009.

Oh and by the way, of that $300 million PLUS, the vast majority of that money is still in the Socialist Victorian Labor Government’s pockets, many, many of the victims of the fires are still awaiting the proceeds that were so generously donated by their fellow Australians, how much of this $300 million was misappropriated by the good Socialist’s that run Australia now,in order to ingratiate themselves to their United Nations masters, so as to ensure that Kevin 07 Rudd gets a job in the UN after he is thrown out of office in Australia?

Samoa? I have no problem with helping them, they are good people who at the end of the day Love, Worship and Respect GOD and the goodness of the Judeo Christian Democratic ethos, the Indonesian Muslims are to be taken at their word, they enunciate their desire to eliminate Australians from the face of the earth given any opportunity to do so.

Having said that, I do believe that we should help Indonesia because unlike them and their fellow Islamic co religionist’s we,at least the majority of Australians believe, that we should help our fellow man in times of adversity.

For Australia’s affirmative action ,Governor General, and former commissioner for “numerous broken hearts and gee aren't men bastards” and “look at that glass ceiling will ya” shit, to imply that Australians owe a debt to these two Nations is an indication as to how out of touch the members of the Rudd Labor inner sanctum are.

For the Record apart from Australians, the taxpayers of the United States Of America have been our staunchest allies and supporters in times of trouble, for Rudd’s personal affirmative action Australian Governor General & “womin servant” and “please vote for Kevin 07 to become the next UN Secretary General, how much money do you want” emissary to try and imply that Australians have some debt to those who are sworn by what they call their “Religion” to eliminate us from the face of the earth, is a bit much to say the least.

100 Australians Missing in Indonesia,Australian Samoa survivor speaks of horror

100 Aussies missing in quake region

October 02, 2009 Indonesian Earthquake

Indonesian search and rescue team members evacuate quake survivor John Lee after he was trapped for two days in the rubble of Maryani International hotel in the Padang quake.

An Australian urban search and rescue team and 10 defence force engineers are heading to Indonesia as authorities express fears that thousands may have died following Wednesday's massive earthquake.

Around 100 Australians are unaccounted for. Foreign Minister Stephen Smith says while he's concerned for their welfare it's likely they're uninjured but yet to contact officials.

The 7.6-magnitude quake toppled buildings and led to fires in Padang, home to nearly a million people on the coast of Sumatra, leaving the city largely without power and communications.

Mr Smith says Australia is responding to a request for help from Indonesia's president.

"Today an urban search and rescue team will leave Australia to assist on the search and rescue mission in Padang," Mr Smith told ABC TV.

"We're also sending a defence force engineering assessment team which will be able to give assistance on some of the difficult engineering aspects of searching buildings that have been damaged by the earthquake."

The urban search and rescue team comprises 44.

Both teams will fly out on Friday morning to Jakarta. They'll likely arriving in Padang on Saturday.

Mr Smith said Australia was making a "significant contribution".

"The scale of this disaster is only now becoming apparent," he said.

"We're worried we'll see deaths not in the hundreds but over a 1,000."

The Rudd government already has a small team of officials on the ground in Padang trying to track down affected Australians.

Humanitarian aid already in Indonesia - including blankets, tents, tarpaulins, water contamination tablets - is now being distributed.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade believes around 250 Australians are in the general area. Around 100 are still unaccounted for.

"We've made contact with nearly 140 so at this stage we've potentially got just over 100 Australians who may be in the area with whom we haven't been able to make contact," Mr Smith said.

"But at this stage we've got no evidence which would indicate that we've got any Australians who are killed or injured.

"But we're just worried to ensure that we track down all the Australians who may have been in the area.

"I'm always concerned when we've got potentially 100 Australians whose whereabouts we can't vouchsafe for."

Australia's embassy in Jakarta hasn't been able to make contact with four of the 13 Australians who were registered in the Padang area "owing to poor communications".

Indonesian Earth Quake Padang Aussie Surfers missing.Samoa,Philippines latest.

Indonesia earthquake: Seven Australians missing in Padang

SEVEN Australians are missing in the Indonesian surfing mecca of Padang following a 7.6-magnitude earthquake which has killed 464 people and buried thousands.
Foreign Minister Stephen Smith said half of the 14 Australians known to be in Padang, located in western Sumatra, at the time of the quake have been located.
"In the area concerned there are 14 Australians who are registered or we know are in the area, we've made contact with seven of those and we're doing our best to contact the remaining seven," he said.

A group of Australian officials has being dispatched to Sumatra to assist any Australians caught up in the tragedy and assess humanitarian assistance needs.

Mr Smith's comments follow the Indonesian Health Ministry's prediction that thousands of people were likely killed in the Indonesian earthquake that struck Sumatra last night.
A second earthquake was recorded shortly before noon (AEST) today - it had a magnitude of 7.0 and struck 150km south of the epicentre.
Padang devastated
Five hundred buildings in Padang collapsed or were badly damaged, Disaster Management Agency spokesman Priyadi Kardono said.
"Two hundred bodies have been pulled from the rubble. The extent of damage in surrounding areas is still unclear due to poor communications," he said.

Padang is a popular destination for Australian surfers heading to the nearby Mentawais Islands.

Surfing Australia chief executive Andrew Stark said: "The Mentawais Islands have the very best surfing waves on the planet. It’s the best surfing in the world.

"There can be up to 35-40 boats in the water at any time, so we have big concerns that there will be Australian surfers that may have been coming in and out of Padang.
"The surf season starts from April until late September in Sumatra and Australian surfers visit Indonesia in the thousands, so we have serious concerns for the safety of Australian and all surfers.

"Australians usually fly into Padang before heading out on surf charters, or staying in surf resorts. So there will absolutely be Aussies caught up in the impact.”

Two Australian surfers who were reported missing were among those located today. Luke Kennedy, acting editor of Tracks magazine where the two worked, said there would be many surfers in Padang.

"(We have) major concerns for any Australian surfers that are based in Indonesia. We also have great sympathy ... with the Indonesian people who are going to be affected by this," he said.

Australian Red Cross said their local office was handling the disaster and hadn’t requested additional help, but that they were on stand-by to help should it be required.

Fears for loved ones

News.com.au readers have expressed concerns about friends and family caught up in the Padang quake.

Gwen Burns said her sister, a heath professional who has worked in the area for eight months, ran out of her Padang hotel room in a panic with her laptop, purse and "just the clothes on her back". The building collapsed shortly after.

"She is my little sister and I am so worried about her and what she went through last night, with no power, no where to go, no communication," she said.

"She was in tears and really shaken."

Meanwhile Malcolm Robertson said his son arrived in Penang yesterday for a 12 day off-shore surfing holiday. He received a text last night saying he was OK but hopes he is out to sea rather than on land.

"I think they must have got out of the airport and made it to the boat OK. Maybe they left harbour, thinking there would be a tsunami. In which case, it’s best to be out at sea," he said.
Earlier today, Disaster Management Agency spokesman Priyadi Kardono said: "The effects of the earthquake could be as big as the Yogyakarta quake."

He was referring to a 2006 quake that killed nearly 6000.

The tragedy comes just a day after an earthquake and tsunami hit Samoa and American Samoa, killing 148 people, including five Australians.

Local media reported that panicked residents rushed from their homes during the quake, which struck off Sumatra's west coast at 5pm (8pm AEST), 47km northwest of Padang.

Indonesian tsunami warning head Rahmat Triyono said the agency did not release a tsunami alert.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii however issued a tsunami watch for Indonesia, Malaysia, India and Thailand, but later cancelled it.

The quake was felt in the capital Jakarta, 940km away, and sent frightened office workers streaming out of buildings in nearby Singapore and the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur.

Forced evacuations for 'super typhoon'

THE Philippines police say they will forcibly evacuate residents refusing to leave their homes in the direct path of an approaching super typhoon.

The order for a "pre-emptive evacuation" was handed down by Defence Secretary Gilberto Teodoro "in line with our zero casualty target", national police spokesman Leopoldo Bataoil said.

He said the order covered communities in the shorelines of Cagayan province in the north-eastern seaboard of Luzon island, where Typhoon Parma was expected to make landfall on Saturday afternoon.

The state weather bureau said Parma was expected to develop into a super typhoon, equivalent to a category four hurricane that could cause widespread damage.

Already packing gusts of up to 185km/hr, Parma was still building up strength as it churned towards the eastern side of the Philippines, officials said.

It comes just days after storm Ketsana caused the heaviest flooding in over four decades in Manila and nearby areas, killing 277 and affecting more than 2.5 million.

Chief Superintendent Roberto Damian, commander of the region that covers Cagayan, said residents would be asked politely to leave when the typhoon begins lashing the area.

"We will first appeal on them to leave but if we see that they are in immediate danger, we will forcibly carry them to evacuation centres," he said.
