Why Pink just can't get enough of Australia

SHE smashed records with her 58-show run of Australia and now Pink plans to up the ante with her next tour.

The pop superstar set a new benchmark when she played an astounding number of shows nationally in 2009, selling more than 650,000 tickets.

A friend of mine saw Pink a few years back and said it was the best concert he had ever seen bar none.

"Hell yeah, we are putting it all together now," Pink tells Insider of her Australian tour plans. "I am honestly just trying to figure out how to top the last tour and stay alive. It was so fun, I had such a good time on that show."

Dates for Pink's 2013 Australian shows will be announced this week with the singer to kick off her The Truth About Love world tour in Phoenix on February 13.

Pink's new album, The Truth About Love, and tour mark her return to work after giving birth to daughter Willow in June last year.

Known for her physically gruelling shows, Pink jokes she needed to get into shape for the tour.

"I am going to take my little fat arse to the gym today but other than that I am pretty lazy these days," she says. "We are conceptualising and putting it (the tour) all together. It is definitely a process with us because we go at it from every angle, from the storyline to the songs to the pace and to what song lends itself to what acrobatic."

Pink arrived in Sydney on Tuesday, flying in to spend time with her daughter and husband Carey Hart ahead of her Australian promotional trip that kicks off tomorrow with a planned media blitz.

The album today tops the ARIA Album Chart for the second week running with her new track, Try, sitting at No.11 on the singles chart.

"I'm sorry. I am apologising ahead of time for anybody that is sick of me. I couldn't wait to get back. It felt so rad bringing Willow here because it is kind of our second home."

The family is making the most of their time here, renting a beachside home in Sydney's north.

It's been an opportunity for Pink and Hart to show off the country they call their second home to their daughter for the first time, including a visit to Sydney Aquarium.

"I've got my little girl running around being a maniac so it is all good," she laughs. "It has been super muggy. I got to stand out in the thunder storm last night."

Even a prank from her neighbours hasn't put the singer off. "We even got egged," she says of finding a dozen eggs smashed on her front door. "It's all good. Please, me, a little egging isn't going to scare me away."

Communications Minister Stephen Conroy has called for YouTube to consider taking down a video that ridicules the Prophet Mohammed which sparked a violent protest in Sydney yesterday.

A spokesman for Senator Conroy said the video, Innocence of Muslims, by an American filmmaker who calls himself "Sam Bacile" was "clearly offensive and (YouTube's owner) Google should review its terms of service to see if they are being appropriately applied in this case."
"Australia has strong anti-vilification laws. If people believe this video is in breach of these laws they can make a complaint to Google or the Human Rights Commission," the spokesman said.
"What people shouldn't do is engage in violent protests on the streets. It is totally unacceptable behaviour and should be condemned."

A YouTube spokesman said the video was "clearly within our guidelines and so will stay on YouTube."
The spokesman said the company had restricted access to the video in countries where it is illegal such as India and Indonesia, as well as in Libya and Egypt because of "the very sensitive situations in these two countries."
"We work hard to create a community everyone can enjoy and which also enables people to express different opinions. This can be a challenge because what's OK in one country can be offensive elsewhere," the spokesman said.

THE government's boat policy is being swamped, with a record number of asylum seekers arriving this month including 198 people rescued after they called triple-0

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority sent HMAS Broome to rescue passengers on the stricken vessel northwest of Christmas Island on Friday morning.

It was the second biggest boatload to arrive since Labor was elected in 2007. The biggest - carrying 211 - was intercepted last month.

The asylum seekers were taken to Christmas Island for security, health and identity checks.

Later, ACV Hervey Bay, operating under the control of Border Protection Command, intercepted a suspected irregular entry vessel north of Cocos and it is believed there were 72 people on board.

Since Labor announced it would send asylum seekers to Nauru and Manus Island last month, 3256 people, including more than 2000 this month, have arrived - more than six times the current capacity of Nauru's processing centre.

There were due to be 500 places in Nauru by the end of the month, with 1500 to be the final capacity and 600 at Manus Island, where the army is constructing a tent camp.

The new boats arrived as 31 more Sri Lankan asylum seekers were flown to Nauru. They boarded a midnight charter flight in Darwin and landed at 5am yesterday with the Department of Immigration keen to show asylum seekers will be taken from mainland detention centres - not just Christmas Island.

After the new group left the plane to be bused to the Topside camp, two Sri Lankan asylum seekers who have spent only weeks on Nauru left on the charter plane bound for home.

They will get resettlement allowances of up to $3300 each.

Another asylum seeker asked to leave Nauru last week and was flown home while and a group of 18 Sri Lankan asylum seekers asked to be flown home from Christmas Island before they could be sent to the remote Pacific Island.

KELLY Clarkson saw the dark side of Sydney on Wednesday night. Rugging up, the Texan powerhouse treated her band to the after-hours Bridge Climb for their only day off in the Harbour city.

And she described the experience as "freakin' awesome" in that trademark southern twang.

It was a much different view of the Mr Know It All songstress, who last night dolled up for her Stronger concert at the Entertainment Centre.

As always, Clarkson's stage was without special effects, back-up dancers or any tricks that other singers with half her vocal strength tend to rely on.

The 30-year-old pop rock diva opened the show with a belting version of her 2009 hit My Life Would Suck Without You and worked her way through a back catalogue from her ve albums.

A cover of Sia's Breathe Me was a particular highlight of the concert.

The most frightening thing said about the Sydney riot against the Innocence Of Muslims video wasn't said by a Muslim, No, give the booby prize to Communications Minister Stephen Conroy.             

His spokesman announced Conroy wanted Google to "review its terms of service'' to consider pulling the "clearly offensive" clip from YouTube. Hey, that is exactly what one of the world's top terrorist leaders wants as well.

The distribution of this entire film must be banned by the Americans — they slandered the   
purity of his birth, slandered his faith and his morals," demanded Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah on Monday.              

When our own Communications  Minister and a terror chief in Lebanon speak as one about          banning an obscure video to placate furious Muslims who haven't seen it we are already halfway to lost.            
Even in America we see this same disgraceful scramble to placate mobs threatening to cut our throats at home or burning Western embassies abroad.

The Obama administration falsely blamed Innocence of the Muslims for triggering a deadly al-Qaeda assault on September 11 on the US consulate in Benghazi.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton repeatedly denounced the ultra-low budget film, as if it was the cause of the lethal Muslim rage and not an excuse for it.

Meanwhile, brown-shirted US authorities raided the filmmaker's home after midnight to take him away for questioning over alleged breaches of this jailbird's probation.

Message received. Make a film attacking Islam and if you aren't hacked to death in the street like Dutch director Theo van Gogh,your own police could drag you out of your bed.

What sort of message does Conroy think he's sending? May as well ask Nasrallah what else he wants banned.

almost certain she's also never seen calling Innocence Of Muslims "truly repulsive",

Repulsive? But that the film is (undoubtedly) bad and rude is no reason to wish it suppressed.

Trouble is, for a Nasrallah,"trash" includes even prize-winning novels such as Sir Salman
Rushdie's The Satanic Verses and the illustrations of Danish cartoonists who mocked Islam and Islamic fanatics.

That book and those cartoons were also attacked with a murderous rage.

Rushdie was sentenced to death by Iran and in this latest orgy of outrage an Iranian religious foundation upped the reward for his killing to $3.5 million. One of his translators has been murdered, and two others wounded.

The Danish cartoonists have also been hunted byjihadists sent to kill them, and three Muslims were jailed over a bomb plot to punish Denmark for its impiety.

Sadly, such violence has worked. Rushdie was asked by the British government to write an apology to Muslims for his novel — and some leftist intellectuals attacked him for his rudeness.

Australian newspapers still refuse to show the Danish cartoons,and Yale University Press didn't dare publish them — even in Jytte Klausen's history The Cartoons That Shook The World.

How careful our publishers and artists have become in their efforts not to offend such extremists.
Scholastic Australia scrapped an adventure thriller, Army Of The Pure, after booksellers and l ibrarians said they would not stock  a book with an Islamist terrorist as  the "baddie", and the Melbourne Comedy Festival banned two acts that joked about Muslims.

"We have then ventured into criminals for what we did. We could have protested, we could have conveyed our opinions peacefully but some of us chose to take these criminal or these illegal actions so this is something we are against," he said.

Police deputy commissioner Nick Kaldas said they had not received any tip-offs about an upcoming protest but police were ready just in case.
"We're not aware of any specific plans for demonstrations this weekend ... but we are absolutely ready for whatever may happen this weekend," he said.

There is an argument that responding to Twitter trolls just gives unnecessary attention to vindictive people with a tiny audience. The same could be said of responding to Media Watch but in the interests of editorial consistency let’s give it a go anyway.

Media Watch has an agenda against the Telegraph. One of many humourless ironies about the program is that it is guilty of the same editorial bias it constantly accuses others of having.

That much is fine: It can think whatever it wants. The problem is that Media Watch presents itself as an impartial arbiter of journalistic standards and some naive and sequestered people in the community—such as my mum and the Gillard Government—actually believe it.

The reason I know Media Watch distorts facts in order to pursue a particular vendetta is because for a long time they pursued one against me. I don’t say this to fish for any sympathy, but just to give some context to the show’s latest canning of the Tele on Monday night.

My love affair with Media Watch began in 2007 when a ``researcher’’ called asking for a contact number for a family in a story I’d written. The yarn rapped Fairfax over the knuckles for running ads that praised a cult leader accused of child sex abuse. I happily handed over the number only to discover that when Media Watch ran the story it did so as though it had discovered the outrage itself and did not credit the Telegraph article that prompted it, let alone the paper’s assistance.

I wrote to them saying I thought this deeply unfair and they responded with words to the effect that it was not their job to report on the media every time it got things right.

The following year Media Watch attempted to score points off the deaths of six people in a Sydney Harbour boating accident. It accused the Telegraph and other outlets of wrongly referring to one of the victims by her second name instead of her first and even suggested that this mistake caused distress to her grieving family.

As it happened the young woman was a friend of a friend of mine and so I sent the program a letter telling them that, like Gough Whitlam and Paul McCartney (and indeed one John Joseph Hildebrand), she was in fact known by her second name. Media Watch later corrected the report but offered no apology to us—or the family whose distress they were once so concerned about.

It was not long after this second interaction that Media Watch suddenly took an intense interest in my reporting.

Half-baked smears included suggesting that I had invented swine flu projection figures that were in fact contained in an official NSW Health report and which were confirmed by two independent experts _ one of whom later backflipped after the government tried to hose down the story.

In another report I did on measures which reduced P-plater deaths by a quarter, Media Watch accused me of saying all but a quarter of P-platers died on the road.

A third involved an error made by another reporter in an item I was told to put in a gossip column I used to do. Not willing to dob in a colleague, I placed a correction in the column the following week saying only the error had occurred during production and was not made by me. In a nudge-nudge wink-wink way Media Watch hinted that I was lying. Nasty, biased and wrong.

Again, I say this only to provide concrete examples of Media Watch manipulating facts in an effort to fuel prejudice against this newspaper and its writers.

Which brings us to this week’s hatchet job. As all readers will know, The Telegraph has been waging a campaign against trolls and cyberbullying on social media. A huge number of people support it, some do not.

The problem for Media Watch is that it couldn’t just say it disagreed with the campaign and accepted online abuse as a price of free speech. It couldn’t admit that in recent years the show has gone from digging up genuine media scandals to pontificating from behind a desk like a televised version of Crikey. 
Instead it tried to claim that we had somehow got it wrong or were hypocritical or deliberately omitted facts.

First it suggested that we had failed to advise our readers to block trolls. This is just rubbish. Even before the launch of the campaign we ran a story whose very headline ran ``Deny trolls attention and they fade away’’. Two days later we said: ``Social media sites advise users who are attacked online to block trolls or simply switch off’’ but added that some users found this difficult. The same day a page three article quoted a Twitter spokeswoman’s advice: ``If there is something that you don’t agree with, or find insulting, it’s best to block that user.’’

On Saturday a story in the sports section—which perhaps nobody at Media Watch has ever read—was headlined ``Sign off from abuse’’. On Monday, the very morning Media Watch went to air, we ran a column by UTS psychologist Rachael Murrihy across almost an entire page that concluded: ``Block the person and contact the ISP host to have posts removed if possible.’’

Media Watch failed to mention any of this. Either it didn’t do its research (again) or it deliberately ignored it.

Even more cute was that it clumsily attempted to perform a little bit of wedge politics by playing a grab from my esteemed colleague Tory Maguire from The Punch telling Sky News she disagreed with the Tele’s campaign. In a refreshing departure from the usual conspiracy theory that News Limited staff are all working in concert to advance some sinister agenda, Media Watch suggested that because some News Limited staff had a difference of opinion this weakened our position.

Fine. Except what Media Watch didn’t say was that I was sitting right next to Tory on that very same show, at the very same time, discussing the very same topic. Seconds after Tory spoke I outlined exactly the point of the Telegraph’s campaign, encouraging abuse victims to block trolls and also explaining why sometimes blocking did not work.

But did Media Watch show even a token grab of that? No. Did it even tell its viewers I was there? No.

The purpose of the Telegraph’s campaign is to support victims of cyber bullying and abuse and bolster protections where merely blocking and reporting is either not enough or comes too late. It is not just about celebrities—or improbably handsome celebrity columnists—but even more so ordinary people who are less equipped to handle it. Like other anti-bullying campaigns we have simply utilised celebrities to spread awareness and let other victims know that they are not alone.

It does not call for new laws, it does not call for censorship and it does not, as Media Watch suggested in a link so tenuous it would make a Hollywood screenwriter blush, have anything to do with Andrew Bolt.

All of this we could have easily explained to Media Watch and saved them the embarrassment of their confused, selective and erroneous story. But as far as anyone at this newspaper can tell they made no attempt to contact us for a response.

All over the country ever-shrinking newsrooms struggle to keep up with the 24-hour media cycle and the ever-increasing demands of media’s brave new world. Journalists are working harder than ever to hold on to their jobs and keep news and information flowing to a hungry public. Media Watch, meanwhile, has a dedicated staff of 11 people whose sole job it is to hang shit on them for 15 minutes a week.

You’d think they could at least do a better job of it than that.
