Droopy eye repair among non urgent medical treatment provided to asylum seekers detained

Gemma Jones
Daily Telegraph

A PREGNANT asylum seeker deemed a security risk by ASIO was offered free domestic help and childcare while another detainee has had drooping eyelids fixed by taxpayers.

An array of non urgent medical treatment provided to detainees has been revealed including a suspected war criminal who had his impacted wisdom teeth removed at no cost to him.

Details of treatment were contained in Ombudsman's reports on long term detainees and come as the government announced the latest asylum boat detected yesterday had 147 passengers on board, the biggest arrival since October last year.

Most of the detainees who have been given everything from free glasses and orthotics to dietary counselling to combat high cholesterol, have been rejected as refugees and are exhausting appeals or have received a negative ASIO security assessment.

In August last year immigration official offered the pregnant 33-year-old, whose third son was born in January, free "domestic assistance, occasional childcare support and assistance with (her daily) routine" on the advice of an occupational therapist and a psychologist.

The woman, who had attended ante-natal appointments at Fairfield Hospital while living in residential housing in the Villawood complex, rejected the offer.

She and her two sons arrived by boat in May 2010 and were in community detention, where she married her husband in April last year, until her release was revoked in April after ASIO delivered an adverse security assessment.
A 27-year-old Tamil Tiger had his impacted wisdom teeth extracted in June at Whyalla in South Australia, two months after he complained of dental pain.

He has been in detention since arriving by boat in December 2009 and was rejected as a refugee after Department of Immigration officials found "serious reasons for considering (the man) had committed a war crime or a crime against humanity."

A Department spokesman declined to comment on the man's case. The 38-year-old with drooping eyelids overstayed a business visa before being rejected as a refugee, prompting attempts to remove him.

While he has been in detention in Sydney, the man has had three rounds of surgery between December 2009 and January 2011 to correct his eyelids.

A Department spokeswoman said surgery was never provided for "purely cosmetic reasons."

Other cases include a 35-year-old with two wives who has been treated for everything from hearing problems to reflux and insomnia since arriving by boat in 2009.

"These cases, especially that of that of a suspected war criminal will do more than test the patience of the Australian public," Opposition Immigration spokesman Scott Morrison said.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Immigration said it had a "non delegable duty of care" to ensure the health and welfare of detainees and that care "is funded by the Australian Government."

She said treatment had to be clinically recommended by "health professionals such as GPs, dentists and medical specialists."

Meanwhile, the government is reportedly considering a plan to move families out of community detention onto bridging visas to save money in the May budget.

Families would be treated the same as single asylum seekers who receive about $440 a fortnight and some rent assistance to live in the community.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard would only say yesterday that a decision had not been taken.

97 asylum seekers caught Australia-bound by Sri Lanka

Daily Telegraph
March 27, 201310:33PM

SRI Lanka's navy says it has seized a fishing trawler carrying at least 97 asylum seekers on their way to Australia.

The boatload of migrants belonging to Sri Lanka's Tamil minority was intercepted at Oluvil off the country's eastern coast on Wednesday, navy spokesman Commander Kosala Warnakulasuriya told AFP.

"In the arrested lot were 39 men, 18 women and also 40 children," Warnakulasuriya said.

They will be handed over to Sri Lankan police later in the day, he added.

Last year some 16,770 asylum seekers arrived on Australia's shores, with Sri Lankans the biggest group, numbering about 6360.

Hundreds have died making the treacherous journey over the past few years.

Canberra is struggling to contain the numbers and has set up processing centres on Nauru and Papua New Guinea.

Sri Lankans pay up to $US3000 ($A2800) for a place on trawlers that take around two weeks to make the treacherous crossing to Australia. Some migrants travel by air to Indonesia and then take rickety wooden vessels to the Australian coast.

On Monday two people including a young child died when an asylum-seeker boat capsized. More than 90 were plucked to safety and taken ashore.

LARGE families released from immigration detention into the community on bridging visas will be entitled to more than $700 in equivalent welfare payments and rent assistance each fortnight.

A single parent with four or more children could receive as much as $706, the Department of Immigration confirmed yesterday.

The first boat to arrive since the government announced it was retreating from its policy to send asylum seekers to Nauru and Manus Island was intercepted on Wednesday.

Customs spotted a vessel with 37 asylum seekers and two crew southeast of Christmas Island. They will be among almost 7000 asylum seekers to have arrived since the offshore policy came into effect on August 13.

The latest arrivals can now be considered for release into the community, where they will be paid the equivalent of a welfare benefit, after the government backdown.

The government's policy reversal came after the flood of arrivals overwhelmed capacity offshore and in Australian detention centres.
All asylum seekers released into the community can be considered for 89 per cent of the Newstart allowance and 89 per cent of the applicable rent assistance offered by Centrelink.

In addition, free basic health care will be provided through the government's Asylum Seeker Assistance scheme and the Community Assistance Support program.

A department spokeswoman said the assistance could go as high as $700 in the cases of large families, but said usually only small family groupings arrived on boats, meaning they would be entitled to a lower rate of benefit and rent assistance.

The lowest rate for singles is about $440 a fortnight and they would also be eligible for a small amount of rent assistance of $72 if they are single and sharing a home, and $108 if they are single and living on their own.

The Red Cross has been the lead agency providing services to those in the community on bridging visas after Immigration Minister Chris Bowen announced last November at least 100 people a month would be released from detention. The number of asylum seekers on bridging visas had swelled to more than 5200 at the end of last week.

The department appointed an extra five service providers in August to work alongside the Red Cross, the department spokeswoman said.

New providers working with those on bridging visas include the Multicultural Development Association, Settlement Services International, Access Community Services, Adult Migration Education and the Migrant Resource Centre of SA.

Meanwhile, the government flew another charter jet to Colombo yesterday to return 40 Sri Lankans, taking the number of those returned to 466 since August 13.

"People who pay smugglers are risking their lives and throwing their money away," Mr Bowen said yesterday.

"There is no visa on arrival, no speedy outcome, and no special treatment."

Jenna-Lee Hughes sentenced to 18 months

Swimsuit model turned cop Jenna-Lee Hughes sentenced to 18 months

A SWIMSUIT model turned cop who used a police database to get information on an underworld figure because she wanted men to like her has been ordered to spend at least a year behind bars.

Former constable Jenna-Lee Hughes, 25, this morning bowed her head and sobbed in the dock as a District Court judge delivered his sentence after branding her a liar.

In 2010 while serving with Surry Hills police Hughes looked up information on Mosman crime figure Alex Macris for her then-boyfriend Neil Cummins, who was working as a bodyguard for Kings Cross identity John Ibrahim.

The Ibrahim family thought Macris's brother John was behind the near-fatal shooting of Fadi Ibrahim outside his Castle Cove home, the court heard.

In 2008 and 2009 she had used the police system to look up information for another boyfriend, Jack Sweeney, also known as Jack Moran.

Hughes failed to report who was responsible for the theft, instead feeding information about the police investigation into the crime to her partner.
She later pleaded guilty to four charges of misconduct and lying to the Police Integrity Commission during a 2011 probe into her wrongdoing.

During her sentence hearing, Hughes told Judge Mark Marien she didn't know Macris's name until she looked up his car registration details for Cummins.

"I was young, impressionable, stupid and I wanted these boys to like me," she said.

But Judge Marien today said he was convinced Hughes knew both who Macris was and why her boyfriend wanted details about him.

"When she gave it to Cummins she was aware of the real possibility that the information would be passed on by (him) to criminal elements," he said.

"As a result of her passing on that information to Cummins, (she knew) some physical harm might befall Alex Macris or some members of the Macris family."

Michael and Fadi Ibrahim were both cleared on charges of plotting to kill John Macris earlier this year.

Judge Marien said Hughes had "deliberately lied" to the court and he didn't believe she was sorry for her serious misconduct.

He sentenced her to a maximum of 18 months in prison with a one-year non-parole period.

Strewth!!!!!!!!!!! Ben Barba Rugby League's Exempla!!! Gimme a Break Pleeese

Shit the rest of the team must be a bunch of Fuck Ups if this NRL Affirmative Action Arse Clown is some sort of HERO

What about the Bull Dogs team members who did NOT volunteer for a ride on the Gambling Piss Up Sex Train?
What about them? Not fashionable enough?

How about Australia starts applauding its FINEST as opposed to its FAILURES regardless of the colour of their skin or ethnic composition.

If this Arse Clown had a different Genetic Composition he would have been written off (rightly so) as a wife /family abusing ,gambling piss head, who for reasons best known to himself, preferred the company of like minded male piss head punks, who were devoted to getting high on what ever it was rang their bell .... or is Ben Lying?

I am all for rehabilitation, but please don't portray this Arse Clown, as some sort of Hero, or worse still as someone to be looked up to... He FAILED the normal behaviours of civilized society,If I am wrong the rest of the Cantebury Bull Dogs Rugby League team must be Playing on Who Know's What?

Is there no one in the Cantebury Bull Dogs Rugby League Team who is not a Piss Head, or Gambler that they can put forward as been a team member worthy of adoration, or is this Ben Barba the best they can offer their fans?

Ben Barba is a failure as a man,he can apparently, when not pissed or gambling his family's money away,or whatever else it is he does with his piss head pals, run and kick a ball on a Rugby League field better than many, apart from that, Australia has never heard of him, and would never have heard from him.
As far as I know he and his ilk have, so far, not found the cure for Cancer,re attached / reconstructed severed limbs, retinas, noses, ears, knees (Oh he and his Rugby League Pals rely on those who are NOT Hero's to fix his and theirs), hips, shoulders not even the common cold,I am not aware of any of their number serving in defence of Australia, let alone making the ultimate sacrifice either through injury or loss of life yet he and his ilk are paraded before us lesser Jugglers/Clowns and average and very slow runners as "Hero's" for deciding to behave normally after been caught out for  deciding to behave abnormally while they thought no one was looking.
Ben you and your fellow "Jugglers and Clowns" are not so special, you have a talent, agreed, that in the real world counts for SHIT,you are nothing more than entertainment for the the Real Men whose gang you and your media spin doctors claim you are a member of.

Good Luck Ben,I hope that one day you and your fellow piss heads and gambler pals choose to be,at least, Grown Up's, who knows maybe one day you will rise to the call, and try and be MEN.

Progressive Australia: Two Queensland Police escape Brick attack by Teeneagers by BUS

Only In Australia
Two police officers hospitalised with head injuries after Acacia Ridge party-goers beat them with bricks in "cowardly attack"

The Sunday Mail
March 17, 2013 4:47PMT

Given here is no reference to these two officers been "Affirmative Action" Appointees, I have to wonder why two armed fully appointed  and physically able Male Police Officers were "Run out of Dodge" by a Mob of Drunk / Drug Stuffed Teenagers.
Thank God it was not a call for help from a Rape / attempted Murder victim.

TWO injured policemen pelted with bricks by teens were rescued by fellow officers, who dragged them onto a bus before demanding driver to take off.

UPDATE: AN IMAGE of a man police wish to speak to regarding an incident in Acacia Ridge overnight where two policeman were attacked with bricks has been released.

The man is described as being Caucasian with a solid build and aged between 17 and 20.

He has short blonde hair, blue eyes and was wearing a blue shirt.

Police are calling on any members of the Acacia Ridge community that may have information which could assist in their investigation to contact Crime Stoppers anonymously on 1800 333 000 or the Acacia Ridge Police.

TWO injured policemen pelted with bricks by out-of-control party goers were heroically rescued by fellow officers, who dragged them on board a council bus and shouted for the driver to take off.
Bleeding from the head, the officers were on the ground surrounded by the violent group when their two colleagues picked them up and got them onto the Brisbane City Council bus.

Detective Inspector Geoff Acreman said the two crews had been called to Marnham St in Acacia Ridge at 11pm to a party that had been advertised on Facebook.

The party, with more than 200 people in attendance - had already had two visits from police before being shut down on the third occasion.

A large group from the party moved to a nearby bus stop.

Det Insp Acreman said a bus arrived soon after and the group of youths surrounded it, climbing on board and kicking out windows from inside.

"A large contingent of youths did get onto the bus and start creating damage to the bus from inside and then a number of people from outside also started damaging that bus," he said.

Police arrived soon after and two officers jumped on board the bus to arrest a youth who was kicking the windows.

"A number of police then also attended as well and two young officers attended and as they were trying to go towards the bus, they were hit in the head with the Besser Blocks," Det Insp Acreman said.

"Those two officers sustained some fairly significant injuries.

"At that stage the officers on the bus decided to drag those two officers, who had fallen, onto the bus and directed the bus driver to shut the doors and drive the bus from the area."

Another eighteen police cars were sent to the scene to take control of the crowd.

"At the time it was becoming quite a violent situation," Det Insp Acreman said.

"One officer has received a fairly significant gash to his face which required eight stitches and the other officer received stitches to his face but also he has received facial fractures which will require ongoing surgery and plastic surgery to treat those injuries."

He said police were now reviewing footage taken from the mobile phones of some of the revellers.

"This was very cowardly," Det Insp Acreman said.

"These are people who stood behind the crowd and were throwing rocks over people to hit these officers in the head.

"And from the reports we've got so far, there were a number of rocks thrown at the officers before one actually did hit them - so it wasn't accidental by any stretch.

"It could have killed them."

At noon, it was reported that a teen who hosted an out-of-control party in Brisbane's southern suburbs last night, which resulted in two police officers being taken to hospital and a council bus damaged, said he "had fun" but it escalated into violence when police arrived to shut it down early.

The party, which was held at a house in Marnham Street at Acacia Ridge, was attended by more than 250 revellers - many of them teens - after details were publicised on Facebook.

"I just had a bit of a party and it got shut down a bit too early and people weren't too happy and they went and had fun and do what kids do," said Jordan Fuller, 17.

"People were on the bus, then the coppers got on the bus and then everyone just started throwing bricks and stuff at the bus."

While Mr Fuller said he did not join in attacking the council bus or the police, he admitted his parents were not happy with what occurred.

He confirmed they were at the house at the time of the party.

"I'm giving mum a bit of time because she is a bit stressed," he said.

The family refused to comment.

One 16-year-old party-goer, who asked only to known as Mikayla, said she returned to the party last night after she was arrested and met at the police station by her parents.

"I just wanted to see what was going on and to see if it was still going," she said.

According to neighbours, council workers worked through the hours of Sunday morning to clean-up the scene, disposing of the empty glass bottles and bricks that had been pelted at police just hours earlier.

Neighbours stood around talking to each other, shaking their heads in disbelief as they compared experiences.

"It was scary. I was trying to put my children to bed during all the loud music and it was challenging," said one neighbour, who asked to not be named.

Another neighbour, Dilshad Ako, who lives across from the bus stop where the council bus was smashed, said initially only two or three marked police cars arrived at the scene last night but called for back-up as they battled for control.

"We thought when the bus comes they might move but when it did a huge number of people arrived and they threw bottles and bricks and smashed the bus," he said.

"Later, a huge number of police cars arrived - at least 20 - and they separated the people. But after some time they came back.

"We didn't come out we just looked through the curtains."

Earlier, it was reported that a police officer remains in hospital with a fractured eye socket after a party of more than 250 young people turned violent in Brisbane's south overnight.

A second officer was released from hospital this morning following the overnight incident, which saw the two officers pelted with rocks and bottles when they tried to help the driver of a council bus caught up in the violence.

The bus was on a routine stop at Acacia Ridge, in Brisbane's south, when thugs from the nearby party in Marnham St attacked the vehicle, smashing the back window.

Police media said both officers were taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital with head injuries.

One officer received 8 stitches to his head and was released this morning, while the other received four stitches to his head and a fractured eye socket. He will remain in hospital for assessment.

Regional Duty Officer for Metropolitan South Inspector Steve Flori confirmed two officers suffered injuries in the "cowardly attack."

"Around 11.15pm police were called to a large party in Acacia Ridge, where there was in excess of 250 people," he said.

"Some of the party-goers became volatile and two officers from Inala station were attacked."

Inspector Flori said the party-goers ranged in age from 16 to 25 years-old.

The details of the party had been leaked to social media and the majority in attendance were unknown to the person hosting the party, he said.

"The host of the party was sober and disgusted," he said.

More than 15 police units from the south side were dispatched to the incident.

Public posts could be found online last night promoting the "open house" party, with several different people advertising a $5 entry fee to the event, which featured a DJ.

Inspector Flori asked the community to help to catch the perpetrators.

"We are asking that the close-knit community of Acacia Ridge help us find the people responsible for this cowardly attack," he said.

"They could come forward and contact either the Acacia Ridge Police or Crime Stoppers anonymously."

Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Police also attended a Facebook party in Mansfield last night.

Officers were tipped off by online posts and sent crews to patrol the streets.

Alcohol was confiscated from a large number of underage drinkers, a police spokesman said.

Sydney will be Ellen DeGeneres' first stop

The Sunday Telegraph
 March 17, 2013 12:00AM

ELLEN DeGeneres will now kick off her Australian tour in Sydney and could arrive as early as Thursday after postponing her trip due to illness.

The US talkshow host, who was due to touch down in Melbourne today, caught the flu earlier in the week and was too sick to fly. Sources tell us she's now planning to land in Sydney as soon as Thursday and will head to Melbourne early next week with her Australian wife Portia de Rossi.

A black-tie gala that was scheduled for Tuesday to welcome the US star to Australia has been rescheduled for the same day the following week, with guests being contacted on Friday to inform them of the date change.

Yesterday DeGeneres updated fans on her recovery and change of plans. "People of Australia! I'm down, but I'm not out. I'll be in Sydney next weekend, and Melbourne after that. More details soon!" she wrote.

To have cancelled a number of her US shows last week and reschedule the highly anticipated trip, it's safe to say her illness must be quite serious.

GP Steve Hambleton says symptoms of the influenza virus can last up to two weeks. "Influenza can be quite a serious illness, it can range from high temperature and aches and pains all over, making a healthy adult so sick that they need to spend up to four days in bed," he told us.

"It can range from something less than that to rapidly progressing to respiratory failure for which people can end up in intensive care."

It could also leave sufferers with post-influenza fatigue for up to a week, so a long-haul flight - even in first class - could be exhausting.

It's an unlucky coincidence DeGeneres' visit was planned with vitamin brand Swisse. Perhaps she should swap the supplements for a flu jab next time.

Dying Khaled Kahwaji asked to name his attacker

Dying man asked to name his attacker

A DYING man who was shot in the head in Sydney's southwest yesterday was desperately asked by police to name his attacker using his last breaths.

The Sunday Telegraph has confirmed the deceased man is Khaled Kahwaji, who was charged with the murder of Saba Kairouz in August 2010.

Kahwaji was named on social media last night about 7pm though police asked it be withheld from publication for operational reasons.

Investigators are focusing their main line of inquiry to include a retaliation attack in relation to that murder, but are also investigating links with the shooting of a crime family matriarch on Auburn road at Auburn last Saturday.

The victim in that case, revealed by this newspaper earlier this week, was the aunt of Supermax inmate Bassam Hamzy, the founder of the organised crime group Brothers For Life.

Police later said they were bracing for an escalation in violence over the attack, which saw her shot four times in the legs at her front door.

Witnesses living on Wilbur St at Greenacre said they tried to help Kahwaji as he lay on the road just after being shot in the back of the head about 6pm last night.

The shooting happened outside a home which was later surrounded by police tactical operatives and the dog squad, who ordered the occupants, on loud speaker, to come outside.

After approximately one hour they then stormed the premises, though no arrests were made.

"We were trying to talk to him and just saying 'can you hear us'," a neighbour, who heard about five shots, told The Sunday Telegraph.

"The first thing police asked him was 'do you know who did this'."

Two search warrants were carried out by heavily armed officers later in the evening on the same street.

Police, the Homicide Squad and about seven riot squad officers have today returned to the scene, blocking off Wilbur st to door knock homes and conduct a line search for further evidence.

Police described the killing of Kahwaji, believed to be 30 years old, as a targeted attack.

He was shot a number of times, including the back of the head, while sitting in a Silver Mazda 3 on leafy Wilbur Lane about 6.15pm.

His body was found lying next to the car which had bullet holes in the driver's side door and about another three in the windscreen.

"This is not a random incident. This person has been targeted and it's certainly not something that is random," Bankstown police Superintendent Dave Eardley said.

"It's certainly an act that's quite vicious and callous."

In a shocking scene now regularly confronting residents of Sydney's western and southwestern suburbs, the street was shut down as more than 30 police scoured the area for evidence.

Forensic detectives and investigators from the Homicide Squad were also called in to assess the scene. Local residents returning from work were unable to enter their homes as the street was blocked off for about 100m.

Police cars and ambulance vans also clogged the street.

A group, believed to be members of the man's family, arrived on the scene soon after police arrived. There were hysterical scenes as several women in the group made their way towards the police barrier to view the body.

Police said it was too soon to say if the killing was related to motorcycle gangs but Supt Eardley said investigators were "not ruling anything out".

Yesterday's killing marks the 35th shooting in NSW this year - more than three a week - with 10 this month alone.

A MAN was shot dead in a suburban Sydney street last night in the latest incidence of gun crime to sweep through the city.

Police described the killing of the man, believed to be 25, in Greenacre, in Sydney's southwest, as a targeted attack.

He was shot a number of times, including the back of the head, while sitting in a Silver Mazda 3 on leafy Wilbur Lane about 6.15pm.

His body was found lying next to the car which had bullet holes in the driver's side door and about another three in the windscreen.

Police said it was too soon to say if the killing was related to motorcycle gangs but Supt Eardley said investigators were "not ruling anything out".

Earlier this week police told The Sunday Telegraph they were preparing for an escalation in gangland violence after a matriarch of the infamous Hamzy crime family was shot at her Auburn home. The woman, an aunt to Supermax inmate Bassam Hamzy, was shot four times in the legs as she opened the front door of her unit at 2.40pm on Saturday.

Brutal story ends as kneecapper freed

Some time on Friday Saleh Jamal will walk out of the South Coast Correctional Centre at Nowra as a free man.
Few on the street will recognise his bearded face or his name.
But the police who worked at Lakemba police station in November 1998 will remember, and the news of his release is likely to raise more than a few hackles.

In 1998 the notorious ''DK's Boys'' gang carried out a drive-by shooting on the Lakemba police station that left the building a mess of shattered glass, and much of Sydney in a state of uproar.

The shooting had five officers ducking for cover as 16 bullets from semi-automatic pistols passed through the station's foyer windows. Then police commissioner Peter Ryan pledged to track down those responsible and to make the streets of Sydney safe.
In May 2009 Jamal became the only person found guilty over the shooting as charges against the other men were dropped or not proven beyond reasonable doubt. He was later sentenced to a maximum of 12 years' jail for a range of charges including shooting with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Last Friday Jamal was quietly acquitted in the Downing Centre District Court after a 12-day retrial.
''Thank you, your honour, may God bless you and your family,'' a jubilant Jamal said.
The acquittal by Judge Steven Norrish coincided with the end of a nine-year jail sentence Jamal was serving for kneecapping a rival drug dealer at Greenacre in October 1998, a month before the Lakemba shooting.
''God willing I will be released next Friday,'' he told the court.
Jamal's release is a remarkable twist in what has been a dramatic and at times brutal and bloody story. For more than a decade the 37-year-old was one of the key members of DK's Boys, named after their leader Danny Karam, who ultimately perished in a hail of bullets from his own gang mates.
During the 1990s DK's Boys challenged Sydney's major players for a slice of the city's illegal drug market and, briefly, for a piece of the Kings Cross nightclub scene, with a brutal strategy that involved kneecappings and multiple murders.
In 2004, after being arrested and charged over the Lakemba shoot-out, Jamal fled to Lebanon with a false passport while on bail.
There he was subsequently arrested and jailed by the Lebanese government on charges of possessing weapons and explosives, planning acts that endangered state security, and possessing a false passport.
His five-year sentence for these crimes was later cut to two years after a Lebanese court ruled that only the passport conviction could be upheld.
In October 2006 he was extradited to Sydney where, in 2008, he was sentenced to nine years' jail for the 1998 kneecapping of a rival drug dealer at Greenacre.
The gang combusted in a fight with police on a White City tennis court in December 2008.
Last year, Jamal's conviction was quashed on appeal and a re-trial ordered.
Among the main reasons for the decision by the three-judge panel of the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal was that Jamal had not been permitted to accompany the jury when, as part of the trial, it visited the scene of the alleged crime.
In the Downing District Court this month Jamal faced the lesser charge of discharging a firearm in a public place.
He was found not guilty by Judge Norrish, hearing the matter without a jury.
He will hand down his reasons for the decision later this month.

A FORMER gang member has been jailed twelve years after a shooting attack on a Sydney police station.

Saleh Jamal will be behind bars at least until 2016 for his role in the attack on Lakemba police station in 1998.
Officers dived for their lives as a volley of bullets smashed into the station glass doors.

One hit a computer screen at head height.Judge Helen Morgan in the District Court today said it was a direct attack on one of the state’s law enforcement agencies.
“This attack was committed as an act of revenge against the police out of a misguided belief that they were unfairly targeting Lebanese,” she said.
The judge said they aimed to intimidate police and deter them from carrying out heir lawful duties.
Jamal, 35, was convicted by jury of discharging a firearm with intend to cause grievous bodily harm
He was a member of “DK’s Boys” an organised crime outfit headed by Danny Karam and was the get away driver when they targeted Lakemba police station in the night-time attack.
Judge Morgan rejected Jamal’s please for mercy on the grounds that it has taken so long for the case to come to trial.
She said that he was the architect of his own downfall.
His earlier trail in 2004, was aborted after he said he was ill.
He then fled to Lebanon on a false passport where he was jailed in Beirut after being convicted of terrorism offences.
The terrorism convictions was overturned on appeal and he was extradited in 2006 and in 2007 jailed in NSW for up to nine years for kidnapping arrival during a shootout at Greenacre in 1998.
His brother Mohammed Omar Jamal was convicted last year over a terrorist plot targeting Sydney Lucas Heights’ nuclear reactor.
Judge Morgan sentenced Jamal to a total of 12 years with a minimum of six and a half.
She said although he was the getaway driver he was as culpable as the gun who fired the shots into the police station.

The great haul of China as China Southern Airlines offers flights from Sydney to London

THE Kangaroo Route is about to become the Dragon Route.

And with yum cha, Chinese tea and bok choy on the menu, travelling to Europe will have a different taste after China's largest airline confirmed flights to the region up to 50 per cent cheaper than their locally owned rivals.

As national carrier Qantas seeks to shore up its Australasian routes through its recent tie-up with Emirates, China Southern Airlines has offered stand-alone flights from Sydney to London at a discount.

Once dubbed the "Kangaroo Route", the Chinese airline's cheapest economy-class return fare between Sydney and London, with a three-hour stopover in Guangzhou, for a two-week trip starting early May was $1442.

A Qantas spokesman last night confirmed a comparable return fare on Qantas to London started at $2207.

Henry He, China Southern's managing director for Australia, last night told The Daily Telegraph the region was "vitally important" going forward, particularly given the strong "visiting friends and relatives" factor.

"Our research has shown a strong Cantonese population in both Sydney and Melbourne dating back to the gold rush in the 1850s," Mr He said.

From April 1, the Guangzhou-based airline will also operate more flights to Europe than Qantas - in a bid to lure traffic from Singapore and Hong Kong.

The move is the first push in an ever-increasing aviation war, with China Southern recently signalling their intentions by recruiting more Australians as cabin crews and setting up a local school for "elite stewards".

The airline has leased one of Sydney Airport's most expensive billboards for three years.

China Southern has 42 weekly flights out of Australia, while Qantas will reduce its service to 28 a week as part of the Emirates alliance.

Chinese tourists, who spent $105 billion overseas in 2012, are forecast to make 94 million trips this year, almost double the level in 2009, statistics from the China Tourism Academy have shown.

Qantas last night acknowledged the increased competition on the route, but cited its "evolving service", which matched what its customers wanted.

"We've been flying Australians to London for more than 50 years and we've always evolved our services to match what customers have told us they want," a spokesman said.

"A comfortable seat, friendly and familiar service, plenty of in-flight entertainment options, good food and wine - these are important things that make a big difference when you're on an aircraft for 20 hours."

Aviation analyst Oliver Lamb last night said the rise of Chinese airlines would soon pose an "enormous challenge" for Virgin and Qantas.

"They're an enormous market and China Southern is the third-biggest airline in the world," Mr Lamb said.

"Their margins on transferring customers to London via Guangzhou will be lower than their rivals.

"So it's going to be very competitive going forward."

Muslims using 10 year olds to plant bombs

Police detain child 'bombers' in Pakistan

Daily Telegraph
March 14, 2013 12:14AM

PAKISTANI police have arrested around a dozen children, some as young as 10, suspected of being used to plant bombs for separatist militants, officers say.

The arrests were made in raids over the past 24 hours, local police chief Mir Zubair Mahmood said while presenting the children at a news conference in Quetta, the capital of the restive province of Baluchistan.

A Baluch militant organisation had lured the children, who came from poor families, to leave packages containing home-made bombs in markets, dustbins and on routes used by police and security forces, Mahmood said.

Mahmood said the militants chose the youngsters knowing that police would not suspect small children or garbage collectors.

"Some of the children said they did not know what the packets contained and what they are doing," he said.

"They said they were happy they would get a small amount of money for dropping the packets."

Some of the boys, aged between 10 and 17, have confessed to involvement in about a dozen blasts in the city including a bombing near a vehicle of the paramilitary Frontier Corps (FC), he said.

The January 10 bomb blast killed two FC soldiers and nine civilians.

Baluchistan has been hit by an insurgency in recent years by Baluch nationalists demanding political autonomy and a greater share of profits from the province's wealth of natural oil, gas and mineral resources.

The province has also been the focus of rising sectarian violence and Quetta has been hit by two huge bombings this year targeting minority Shi'ite Muslims that have killed nearly 200 people.
