Paedophile arrests link to Dolly Dunn

A PROMINENT kids sports instructor and Aussie Rules umpire has been arrested this morning in relation to paedophile offences linked to notorious sex fiend Robert "Dolly'' Dunn.

The man, aged 66, and another man, aged 60, are alleged to have been associates of Dunn.

They were arrested this morning at their homes in Harris Park and Belrose by the Sex Crimes Squad.

Dunn died in Long Bay Prison Hospital in July this year aged 68 from HIV complications

The former school teacher was serving a 20-year sentence for a series of sexual offences against boys in the 1980s and 1990s.

This morning's dramatic arrests follow one of Dunn's victims approaching police and making a lengthy statement naming the two men.

Police will allege among other charges that the 60-year-old procured this victim and supplied him to Dunn.

Both men are facing a raft of charges and are currently being questioned by police at Parramatta and Dee Why police stations.

Dunn's sordid double life was first revealed by the Wood Royal Commission into paedophilia, which uncovered explicit photographs of young boys coerced into sex.

The photos showed boys aged about 10 possibly younger - performing a series of sex acts.

``They're as bad as you could ever expect to see of that kind,'' Justice Wood said at the time.

Too disturbing to be revealed publicly, the photos were shown to journalists in a closed session.

Police had the photos since 1993, but Dunn had still not been charged, forcing then assistant commissioner Alf Peate to agree police efforts had been abysmal.

The commission also revealed a video taken by Dunn and a companion as they travelled the state secretly filming young boys.

Described by Justice Wood as "an evil film", it contained segments shot at Mudgee in the central west, Menangle in Sydney's south west, and on the central coast.

Calling themselves "Jedda" and "Dolly Dunn", the two men film young boys on the street, swimming in a river and fishing from a bridge while dressed only in bathers.

Throughout the film is a commentary of the men referring to the boys as "she" and "it". At Raymond Terrace, north of Newcastle, Jedda zooms in on a group of boys and says: "Look at that little bum going up in the air there now."

Justice Wood said the boys would not have known they were being filmed.

"They are innocent victims of two paedophiles who chose to use a holiday to film them in various locations," he said.

"It's an evil film in the sense that's it's rather frightening to think there are people who would spend their holidays driving filming small boys, and largely from the rear, when they do not know it."

The Commission discovered that of the 440 suspected paedophiles profiled by police Dunn's name was not included.

Mans best Friend.. no doubt .

Our pets sniff a cancer warning

IT is the greatest affirmation of man's best friend - a dog which detected his owner's cancer and ultimately saved her life.

Paula Bockman-Chato had first believed that the constant sniffing and nuzzling under her arm by her beloved saluki Kaspar was just the dog being affectionate.

But that was until a medical check revealed early signs of lymph node cancer in the very spot that had attracted Kaspar's attention.

While Mrs Bockman-Chato's story is remarkable, it is not uncommon. Scientific research has now confirmed what was long anecdotally believed - dogs are highly successful in sniffing out cancer in humans thanks to their incredible sense of smell.

So good are they - up to 97 per cent accurate according to one study - that one of Australia's chief vets is pushing to have dogs in GP surgeries just to sniff out cancer.

Having just beaten the cancer - she was cleared by her doctors after her diagnosis late last year - Mrs Bockman-Chato, of Kellyville, said she would not have been aware of the disease if it wasn't for Kaspar.

"He kept putting his nose in my armpit and sometimes he'd put his paw in there as well," Mrs Bockman-Chato said.

"I was totally unaware there was a problem until he kept focusing on that spot."

Australian National Kennel Council vet Dr Peter Higgins said it was time doctors used this remarkable ability by having dogs in their surgeries as early cancer detectors.

"It would not replace diagnostic tests but it would be a good early and non-invasive way of finding if something is there," he said.

Dr Higgins said some of his clients were alerted about emerging skin cancer when their pet dog started consistently licking the cancerous spot on their arm or leg.

"They went to their doctor and found they had a skin cancer developing," he said.

Dogs are used in US doctors' rooms to calm patients and reduce their blood pressure as they wait.

"I'd be saying to medical practitioners to have an open mind about it, give it a go," Dr Higgins said.

Sydney veterinary surgeon Dr Rob Zammit said dogs had a sense of smell 10,000 times stronger than humans, giving them the ability to detect the different scent produced by cancerous waste products.

It is an ability which modern science is now utilising to save lives.

"It is the evolution of the dog as truly man's best friend," he said.

Cancer Council chief Professor Ian Olver said he was aware of the research and while it would be costly to keep dogs in surgeries it could be explored.

California's Pine Street Foundation found dogs identified people with lung and breast cancer by sniffing proteins in their breath.

The foundation ran a trial involving 86 patients with cancer and 83 without and found dogs could identify the cancer patients with an 88-97 per cent accuracy range.

University of Oklahoma researcher Dr Patrick McCann, inspired by the dog cancer research, is developing a test using infrared lasers to detect cancer markers on a patient's breath.

Beach trip sparked high-rise horror

A MAN accused of trying to throw his sister-in-law off a high-rise car park was angry because she had taken his wife to the beach without his permission, a Sydney court has been told.

Ismail Belghar allegedly said "I'm going to kill you'' before carrying 22-year-old Candan Kokden to the point where her upper torso was hanging over a railing at a shopping centre car park in central Sydney.

"At this point, the victim had been crying uncontrollably and thought she was going to die from the accused throwing her over the railing to the roadway below,'' according to police facts tendered in Newtown Local Court on Wednesday.

Belghar, 34, of Canterbury, is charged with the attempted murder of Ms Kokden, and of assault occasioning her actual bodily harm on Tuesday night at the car park of the Broadway Shopping Centre.

He was granted bail with a string of conditions that mean he cannot discuss the case with his wife of 11 years, Hanife Kokden, nor can they mention her sister.

The Moroccan immigrant is to report to police daily, continue to take his depression medication and not to go within 500 metres of his sister-in-law's home.

In opposing bail, prosecutor Sergeant Steve Kelly said ``a great deal of animosity and hatred'' had been expressed by Belghar to his sister-in-law.

About a month ago, Candan Kokden took her sister to the beach for an outing, leading Belghar to later ring her, the facts alleged.

He allegedly called her a ``slut'', repeatedly said he would kill her, saying ``how dare you take my wife to the beach''.

Since that date, the victim has made a conscious effort to avoid the accused at all costs, including declining to attend family dinners, so as not to aggravate the accused,'' the facts said.

She went to the shopping centre with her brother, Oktay Kokden, but on entering the building saw her sister and brother-in-law.

Wanting to avoid him, she returned to the car park and sat on a hand rail of a walkway, resting her legs on a bottom rail, but Belghar then came outside.

He stood in front of her, with his face against hers, and threatened to kill her, the facts said.

Belghar then allegedly slapped her face, before putting his arms around her legs and lower torso and picking her up from the rail.

He then allegedly moved her to the boundary rail, which faced the roadway below, before her brother tackled him and she fell to the ground, the facts said.

She later identified sunglasses, found by police on the roadway, as being the ones she had on top of her head before the incident.

Belghar allegedly told police he had confronted his sister-in-law "regarding issues of respect'', but denied trying to harm her.

He also allegedly said he had been angry over an incident when she and his wife went to the beach ``without his permission''.

The case was adjourned to the Downing Centre Local Court on January 7.
