Counter-terrorism agencies warn of hidden danger of radicals who use Islam as a cloak for extremism

TO OUTSIDERS, Sydney’s Islamic pavement-preaching movement is a harmless way to sell the religion.

Earnest young men in white skullcaps and traditional long white robes have become increasingly familiar on the city’s streets and in the grounds of universities as they seek to “spread the blessing of Islam!”

However, counter-terrorism agencies warn of the hidden danger coming from some of those inside using it as cloak for their extremism: It is a movement that has nurtured four dead radical fighters.

Three of its preachers, Ahmad Moussalli, Sheik Mustapha al Majzoub and Yusuf Ali, along with Ali’s young wife Amira Karroum, have been hailed as martyrs after dying in the past two years in Syria, the war zone where the fanatical ISIL militant movement now ravaging Iraq first began its bloody rise to power in 2013.

Now the western Sydney- based Dawah on the Streets is rallying its 12,000 supporters to join a men-only day of action next month.

The young men — who need to register with organisers for the July 5 rally — will be taught the

GORAP (God’s Existence, Oneness, Revelation, And Prophethood) method, which involves avoiding heated discussions about their faith.

GORAP handbooks are handed to the street preachers, teaching them how to sidestep questions about terrorism, sharia law, polygamy and the treatment of women.

The Daily Telegraph attempted to speak to three Dawah groups yesterday, including the Islamic Dawah Centre of Australia and Dawah on the Streets. A spokesman for Dawah on the Streets refused to comment and said he didn’t know about GORAP, despite its presence on its registration page.

Community leaders have urged young people not to turn an increasingly volatile Iraq into the next killing fields as police renew warnings that anyone found to have illegally participated in an overseas war will face the full force of the law when they return to NSW — if they are lucky enough to get back alive.

“Regardless of what our religion is, we have to stand up and say that there is no way anyone could encourage anyone to go overseas to fight and to abuse religion to promote geopolitical agendas,” Dr Stepan Kerkyasharian said yesterday.

Lebanese-Australian Ahmad Moussalli, a former South Strathfield High School student, boasted of converting more than 30 people on the streets of Parramatta before heading to Egypt in 2012 and then into Syria, where he was killed in February this year.

Dr Kerkyasharian, former president of the Anti-Discrimination Board and chair of the Community Relations Commission, said he was very concerned about the Iraq crisis and the impact it will have on Australia.

“A very strong stand has to be taken by community leaders not only to support the government and the security agencies but also to send a very strong message to the young people not to be tempted to go overseas (and fight),” he said.

Counter-terrorism authorities do not view the Dawah movement as a major threat to security but remain conscious of the radicals among their number.

After the popular Sheik Mustapha al Majzoub died in Syria in August of 2012, reportedly while leading a rebel platoon in the northern Syrian town of Salma, Street Dawah Australia posted a tribute on Facebook to the man they described as “Our Beloved Brother/Teacher”.

One of his last lectures in Australia was at the radical Al-Risalah Islamic bookstore in Bankstown, which has since closed but maintains a presence online.

Lebanese-Australian Ahmad Moussalli, a former South Strathfield High School student, boasted of converting more than 30 people on the streets of Parramatta before heading to Egypt in 2012 and then into Syria, where he was killed in February this year.

Mr Moussalli was joined on the street patrols by his friend Yusuf Ali, 22.

Born as Tyler Casey in the US and raised in Queensland as a Christian, Ali converted at least one university student to the faith at Macquarie University during Islamic Awareness Week.

He died in a bullet-riddled house alongside his Australian bride, Amira Karroum, 22, earlier this year.

Counter Terrorism Assistant Commissioner Peter Dein told The Daily Telegraph in March he did not view Dawah street crews as a major threat to security.

Mr Dein said the large majority — up to 95 per cent — of street preachers were genuine and not unlike those of other religions and faiths.

With its base in Sydney’s inner west, Dawah On The Streets has now spread across the country with street crews to hold simultaneous events in Perth, Melbourne and Brisbane on July 5. Women, who are not allowed to take part, have been asked to help out in the background.

“To every member of the community, not just leaders, anyone who comes across activity that encourages people to go (to Iraq) and take up arms and fight or to support people who are fighting are committing a serious offence against humanity,” Dr Kerkysharian said.

SPREADING THE WORD

Dawah means the proselytising or preaching of Islam and a da’i is a person similar to a missionary “inviting people to the faith, prayer and manner of Islamic life”.

It is a fast-growing movement which has even been on the World Cup streets of Brazil to talk to football fans.

On its Facebook page, Street Dawah Australia says it is about “Spreading the blessing of Islam! Eliminating misconceptions and showing you the other side of the coin about Islam!“
