A mother from Sydney’s north-west has been sentenced to at least two years behind bars over her failure to immediately act after her toddler was allegedly bashed by his father.

A Sydney court has heard the 25-year-old North Rocks mother heard her two-year-old son being attacked but did not intervene or immediately seek medical attention in July last year.

The mother confessed to hearing "four or five bangs inside the bedroom and...the victim screaming".

"If anyone causes one of these little ones--those who believe in me--to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea."
The boy was not taken to hospital until two days after the alleged incident that left him with a severe brain injury and a bruised face, arms, leg and feet.

In the meantime the toddler also suffered a stroke which has subsequently left him severely disabled.

The mother was in tears as her sentence was handed down, waving to supporters as she was led away.

Lawyer Jimmy Singh has stated she regrets her actions.

“She expressed a tremendous amount of remorse and guilt for what she did and she's undergoing extensive counselling sessions at the moment,” he said.

Her de-facto partner has pleaded not guilty and will face trial next year.
