Greece, Spain, Portugal, Italy, the USA a story of betrayal
Why we're following US towards a dangerous debt with destiny
Jeff Kennett
The Daily Telegraph
January 10, 2013 12:00AM
AS you read this column today my wife Felicity and I will be returning to Australia, having spent three weeks in the US. In New York, Boston and Washington.
It has been a wonderful experience. The extraordinary bustle and energy that is New York, where every language and colour fill the streets. The sights, the theatres, the shopping, the restaurants and the sounds. Simply electric.
But more significant than the sites we visited has been the opportunity to observe the failure of the politicians, the President of the US, the Congress made up of the House of Representatives and the Senate, dealing with the issues surrounding the "fiscal cliff".
The cliff was a political device created in 1917 in an attempt to control the nation's level of debt. Until recently gaining support from both houses of Congress for increasing the debt has not been an issue, as debt levels have
been manageable. But that has not been the case in recent years. US debt stands at $16 trillion. That is about 106 times our Australian debt of $150 billion.
Under President Barack Obama, US debt has risen from just under $10 trillion when he was elected four years ago by a massive 60 per cent to the $16 trillion the country owes today.
The US fiscal cliff had two inbuilt components which, unless legislators acted, would have automatically become law on January 1, 2013 - substantially higher taxes to generate extra revenue, and a range of expenditure cuts to attempt to stop the growth of the deficit.
Legislators have had two years notice of the December 31, 2012, deadline - yet did nothing until the last week. After a lot of political manoeuvring the Senate and house agreed to what I would call a totally unsatisfactory, in fact cowardly, outcome. A rise in some taxes for those with incomes above $400,000, or $450,000 for couples, some other small income increases, and absolutely no cuts in government expenditure.
In fact, with other new government spending commitments adding $4 trillion to US debt over the next few years, the US economy is going backwards. Within the next two months the president and the legislators will have to return their attention to dealing with the debt ceiling when it reaches its legislated $16.4 trillion limit. If the cost of government programs is not reassessed and reduced, the US is heading for a debt level of $22-24 trillion in four years. That would make the Obama administration the most economically disastrous in American history, with frightening ramifications.
What I have witnessed is the greatest demonstration of a failure of leadership, from the president down.
Never have I seen the philosophy of spending your way out of debt work.
We did not do it in Victoria in the 1990s, nor has Canada nor Turkey. Latvia has not done so in rebuilding its economy.
Greece, Spain, Portugal, Italy, the UK to some extent, and clearly the US, are clearly trying to do so - printing more of their currency to get through the next few years without addressing the fundamental reasons for their current economic condition.
They are spending more on recurrent expenditure than they are raising from taxes and charges. Each of these countries are living beyond their means.
A day of economic reckoning will come for them all, and it will not be pleasant.
What is the principal lesson I have learnt from this trip in relation to Australia?
Our economic position is not nearly as bad as the US, at present, but the mentality of our politicians, and we the public, is exactly the same.
We are not accepting any sense of responsibility for our economic and social future.
We are over-governed, we demand and seek too many entitlements from governments, our politicians think short-term, and electoral popularity is more important than electoral responsibility.
It is time for greater accountability and responsibility by all of us. Read the tea leaves, here and in the US!
To ignore the experiences of the US, Greece and Spain, in the belief their economic challenges cannot develop here in Australia, could be the greatest act of hubris of our generation.

ASIO Comrade Gietzelt and Comrade Hawke
ASIO claimed minister was being controlled by Soviets
TROY BRAMSTON
The Australian
January 02, 2013 12:00AM
Several months after senator Gietzelt became a minister, an ASIO agent reported in a "secret" note a conversation between Communist Party leaders Laurie Aarons and Joe Palmada that revealed senator Gietzelt was "still a financial member of the CPA" and that he was meeting Aarons "regularly".
A previously unreleased cache of ASIO files made available to The Australian provides the first documentary evidence that Mr Gietzelt, now 92, was believed to have still had close links with the Communist Party while serving as a minister.
A "secret" ASIO minute paper, dated February 18, 1983, concluded with the "possibility" that "GIETZELT is under some form of control by the Soviets. As a secret member of the CPA and a parliamentarian he would undoubtedly be of interest to the Soviets," it said.
In an interview with The Australian, former prime minister Bob Hawke said: "I just don't think it is appropriate for a (former) prime minister to discuss the nature of the conversations they had with ASIO."
Mr Hawke said he was satisfied about senator Gietzelt's loyalty to the government.
"I had no problem with any of my ministers in terms of their complete commitment to the Australian Labor Party," he said.
"I had heard there was scuttlebutt about Gietzelt; there was scuttlebutt about Tom Uren. But as far as I was concerned they were totally committed to the Labor Party."
Yes I am sure they "were totally committed to the Labor Party." Comrade Hawke,as are you and all members of the ACTU GetUp funded ALP,but the Australian Labor Party is not the Australian People, it is not representative of the aspirations of the Australian people it is unashamedly committed to the objectives of International Socialism aka.Socialist aka Communist World Government, or is Comrade Macken lieing?
ASIO maintained its interest in senator Gietzelt's alleged communist linkages as the Hawke government came into office and while senator Gietzelt was serving as a minister.
Two days before the March 5, 1983 election, which swept Labor into government, ASIO completed an examination of its extensive files on senator Gietzelt, who had been a member of the upper house since 1971. "An examination of the GIETZELT file leads to the conclusion that he was and probably remains a secret member of the Communist Party of Australia," notes a minute paper labelled "top secret".
Another "secret" file note prepared in April 1982, during the Fraser government, documents senator Gietzelt's association with the Communist Party between April 1976 and November 1981.
It reports that Aarons, the then national secretary of the Communist Party, described senator Gietzelt as "the CPA's official parliamentary co-ordinator in Canberra between 1972 and 1975" -- the term of Gough Whitlam's Labor government.
It also notes that senator Gietzelt "was a secret member of the CPA" in 1969 or 1970, and also in 1979 that he "is a dual ticket holder (CPA/ALP) and is the main key of influence of the CPA in the left wing of the ALP".
In the March 1983 document, ASIO notes that while the source material on senator Gietzelt's secret involvement in the Communist Party stretched for at least four decades, it could not be certain that he "was a secret party member", even though earlier and later ASIO documents suggest that he was.
ASIO's files cover his alleged involvement with the Communist Party from the 1940s to at least the 1980s, and include extensive agent reports, informant reports, photos and films outlining a secret role in organising for the CPA inside the Labor Party.
Several ASIO files concerning senator Gietzelt's Communist Party linkages remain unreleased. Several documents that have been released have many redactions throughout.
When contacted by The Australian on Monday, Mr Gietzelt refused to respond to the ASIO claims in the new documents. When contacted by The Australian in 2010, Mr Gietzelt denied that he was a member of, or an organiser for, the Communist Party.

Alan Jones claims PM Gillard's father died of shame.....I disagree
The Australian Labor Party and their Australian Council of Trade Unions and GetUp financiers are working towards a Serfdom state with social order dictated and enforced by Muslim Savages via Sharia Law sold to the masses as Resdistributive Social Justice.
Alan Jones says Julia Gillard's dad 'died of shame'
JONATHAN MARSHALL
The Sunday Telegraph
September 30, 2012 12:00AM
VETERAN broadcaster and 2GB host Alan Jones has claimed Prime Minister Julia Gillard's father died of "shame" because of the political "lies" his daughter told.
He told a group of 100 Young Liberals that John Gillard's death was the fault of his proud child.
He went on to suggest Ms Gillard's tears of grief, for a man she publicly said she "will miss for the rest of my life", were what sparked a sudden leap in political polling for her.
Mr Gillard, a former psychiatric nurse, died in Adelaide on September 8, age 83.
The remarks occurred during Mr Jones' 50-minute speech at the annual $100-per-head Sydney University Liberal Club President's Dinner, on the top floor of Sydney's Waterfront restaurant in The Rocks last Saturday.
After referring to Ms Gillard's track record with telling the truth to voters over issues including the carbon tax, Mr Jones said her father's death was caused by the Prime Minister herself.
"The old man recently died a few weeks ago of shame," Mr Jones told a group of party members and MPs, including Alex Hawke, Ray Williams and Sussan Ley.
"To think that he had a daughter who told lies every time she stood for parliament.
"Every person in the caucus of the Labor Party knows that Julia Gillard is a liar."
Some members of the audience gasped with surprise.
The radio star went on to say Ms Gillard had enjoyed a recent spike in polls sparked by her tears. He also said she was being given an easy ride by the "brainwashed" Liberal Party who had backed down because she was a woman.
Labor Green Loons (Madame Gillard's) Australia
Organisers of the dinner were not aware a journalist from The Sunday Telegraph, who had purchased a ticket, was present.
While paying tribute to her father in parliament on September 19, Ms Gillard spoke of the rough and tumble of politics and how that affected the family.
She said her father "felt more deeply than me, in many ways, some of the personal attacks that we face in the business of politics, but I was always able to reassure him that he had raised a daughter with sufficient strength not to let that get her down".
Mr Jones made several mentions about why Liberal leader Tony Abbott should be Australia's next PM.
"His overweening weakness is his humility. You will never ever hear this bloke argue his ability, his virtue, or indeed his competence," he said.
"He is a man of incomparable integrity and conviction."
The broadcaster said it was vital every member of Mr Abbott's party united behind their leader in the lead-up to the election. Mr Jones said some members of the Labor caucus were scared of the Liberal leader and others thought he was sexist.
Yesterday Mr Jones did not respond to approaches from The Sunday Telegraph.
The event was staged by Sydney University Liberal Club president and aspiring MP Alex Dore. Mr Jones has endorsed his political endeavours.
Yesterday, Mr Dore said Mr Jones had not made the comments about Ms Gillard's father. Later, informed there was a recording of the speech, his position changed.
"It was a very long speech and I did not hear it. I have always found Alan to be respectful," Mr Dore said.
He said there was "no need" to "pick apart Alan's speech. All you are doing is reducing it to a very small thing which distracts from the issues facing Australia".
Mr Williams would not be drawn on Mr Jones' remarks.
"I will just let this one go through to the keeper, the room was a bit a noisy at the time, I can't remember him saying it," he said.
Fellow MPs Mr Hawke and Ms Ley could not be reached.
Mr Abbott had previously expressed his condolences for the Prime Minister.
"This is a tragic time for (Ms Gillard) and we all feel for her at this very sad time," he told parliament. "It is a remarkable parent who produces a prime minister of this country."
During the five-hour event, three spoof songs were sung by Young Liberals member Simon Berger, Woolworths' government realtions manager.

ALAN Jones cannot stand Julia Gillard.
The former Wallabies coach has previously suggested the prime minister should be thrown out to sea in a chaff bag, ridiculed her on live radio for arriving late to an interview and even called her a liar.
During a now infamous February 2011 interview on 2GB, Jones made it clear to the Labor leader that being 10 minutes late was not on.
"Ten past seven is 10 past seven isn't it?" he said.
" I can understand you may not want to come on
or you can't come on but surely courtesy has to be part of the way in which the public are treated."
She apologised and said a previous media commitment was the reason for being late.
During the 30-minute exchange, in which the carbon tax was the hot topic, Mr Jones said Australia was being headed by a liar.
"Do you understand, Julia, that you are the issue today, because there are people now saying your name is not Julia but Ju-liar and they are saying that we've got a liar running the country?" he said.
Days later Ms Gillard told the ABC's Q&A show that she could not say on national television what she thought of Mr Jones.
"Some words you probably can't use on the ABC, even at this time of night. I think it would be a bad result if tomorrow people were (watching) TV, and then the prime minister said 'beep, beep beep'."
Mr Jones once unsuccessfully sought Liberal pre-selection for the NSW seat of Earlwood.

Australia: Pious Muslim student “upset by the way Australian women dressed and behaved” Jailed for sex attacks of Seven Australian Women & Children, but it is ok, the judge understood his pain “no Mosque and no support nearby”
Elissa Hunt
Herald Sun
May 31, 2011
A FOREIGN student who sexually assaulted seven victims claimed he was upset at the way Australian women dressed and behaved, a court has heard.
Libyan masters student Almahde Ahmad Atagore, 28, was this morning jailed for at least three years over the assaults in August and September last year.
He had been in the country only a month, on a sponsorship funded by his government.
But County Court Judge Margaret Rizkalla said Atagore wasn’t prepared for the cultural differences and felt isolated and depressed.
He indecently assaulted two teenagers leaving the Mentone Hotel, laughing at them afterwards.
Atagore returned another night to attack two more outside the same pub.
Two more victims, including a 13-year-old girl, were assaulted as they used escalators at Flinders St station.
Another, 17, was attacked outside Mentone train station.
Atagore was identified in footage from Flinders St and cameras outside the hotel, but when confronted by police denied he had molested the victims.
Judge Rizkalla said he struggled to adapt to Australian life, without a mosque nearby and with little support.
Atagore told a psychiatrist he was upset at the way local women dressed and behaved, leaving him feeling both angry and aroused.
But he now felt shame and regret for his crimes, the judge said.
She said Atagore was suffering from an adjustment disorder, which contributed to his offending, and would face a hard time in prison with his poor grasp of English.
But the attacks happened in public places and had left the victims fearful of public transport, robbing them of security and independence.
Several of the victims were in court and welcomed the maximum sentence of five years and three months, with at least three years to serve before being eligible for parole.
Atagore pleaded guilty to five counts of indecent assault, one of assault with intent to rape and one of committing an indecent act with a child.
Police were unable to check his criminal past due to unrest in Libya.
But Sen-Det Dion Achtypis said outside court that Atagore’s nationality was not a factor in his crimes.
“There are many, many overseas students in this country who are law-abiding citizens,” he said.
No this story is NOT a joke it is true check the link it works. How dare the Australian Labor Party bring these Sociopaths into Australia without first providing them with a Mosque on every street corner and “Support” so as they are able to control their Sociopathic urges and maintain some semblance of been civilized or at least house trained.

Refugee Action Coalition & Council for Civil Liberties demand end to punitive policies
Solicitors visiting asylum seekers now incarcerated at Silverwater prison are shocked at what they have seen. Stephen
Blanks, solicitor and secretary of the NSW Council for Civil Liberties briefly interviewed two of the 22 (mostly Iranians
and Kurds) locked up there. He said: “They are in solitary confinement, locked down for 18 hours a day with no access to
communication, either with each other or with the outside world. There are no toothbrushes, no showers, not even any
toilet paper.
“They’ve ended up in prison without any charges being laid and without any supervision from a court. I’ve lodged a
complaint with the Australian Human Rights Commission. One of them told me that when he was forcibly removed from
his bed in Villawood early in the hours of Good Friday, that a guard pushed handcuffs into his wrist, and laughed.
Mark Goudkamp from the Refugee Action Coalition added: “These conditions in Silverwater are unacceptable in a
democratic society. It is also highly ironic given many Iranians detainees fled the Ahmadinejad government’s crackdown
on mass pro-democracy protests in 2009. That Australian authorities think treating people in this way is acceptable is
nothing short of scandalous. Australia frequently condemns human rights abuses in Iran, including in Tehran’s notorious
Evin prison.”
Meanwhile, a planned visit to celebrate Easter Sunday with Villawood detainees has had to be cancelled. Mark Goudkamp
said, “When I rang Serco yesterday, I was told we couldn’t visit friends in detention because Villawood is a ‘crime scene’.
Immigration and Serco are consciously trying to sow divisions among detainees, telling them that the reason visiting is
banned indefinitely is because the rooftop protest is continuing. That this ban includes Stage 1, which was completely
unaffected by Wednesday’s riots, is completely unreasonable and continues the rotten culture of collective punishment
that was a feature of detention under John Howard and Phillip Ruddock. The ban on visits over Easter is diametrically
opposed to the spirit of goodwill that this festive holiday is supposed to represent.
“Despite being prevented from receiving visitors, our asylum seeker friends are looking forward to a strong show of
support outside Villawood tomorrow afternoon. Acting PM Wayne Swan’s view that our march is inappropriate because it
coincides with Anzac Day are quite ridiculous when you consider that Afghanistan, where Australian soldiers are currently
being killed, is also by far the largest source country for asylum seekers. 2267 of the nearly 7000 people now in detention
come from there. Many democratically minded diggers, who themselves went to war thinking they were fighting against
dictatorships and repression, will understand why we are protesting. They are welcome to join us.”
The Sydney action, which is part of a national series of protests against mandatory detention, will assemble at 12 noon at
Chester Hill train station, before marching to the Gurney Rd side of Villawood. Former detainees from Iran, Afghanistan
and Iraq will address the rally, along with psychiatrist Michael Dudley, the Greens, the Teachers Federation, and the
Refugee Action Coalition.
Meanwhile at Curtin detention centre in remote WA, between 300-500 detainees are on hunger strike, and protesting
against the length of time it is taking to process their claims. Around 60 protesters have arrived after a two day bus
journey from Perth, hoping to visit detainees, and to protest against mandatory detention. There will also be a protest at
Maribyrnong detention centre in Melbourne.
For further comment, call Stephen Blanks 0414448654 (NSW Council for Civil Liberties), Mark Goudkamp (Refugee Action
Coalition NSW) 0422078376, or Ian Rintoul (for comments on Curtin action and hunger strike) 0417713275.

Frances Milne of Balmain for Refugees and tireless refugee advocate just called to say that the Fed Police are now assembling ladders to bring down the rooftop protesters. They protesters in turn are threatening to jump. If anyone can get out there NOW, please do.
Also, the police performed an operation last night inside Villawood, and snatched 22 mainly Iranian and Kurdish people, who were mostly already in bed, and transferred them to Silverwater prison. I will try to find out their names today, and hopefully a visit to the prison can be arranged. Report about this in The Australian, here: http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/nation/detainees-arrested-as-sydney-protest-continues/story-e6frg6nf-1226043242169 , and SMH here: http://news.smh.com.au/breaking-news-national/villawood-detainees-questioned-by-police-20110422-1dqxz.html
Melina, who was absolutely fantastic out at Villawood yesterday, gets a plug here on Channel 7. http://au.news.yahoo.com/a/-/newshome/9244925/poor-staff-training-blamed-for-villawood-riot/ Melina was involved in the democracy protests in Iran, and actually organised one at the Iranian embassy in Dubai after the killing of Neda. Her husband is inside. He has been three times rejected. She has visited him every day, from 12.30-7.45, for the past six months, and with Serco banning visiting yesterday, she joined us. When my energy levels were flagging late yesterday afternoon, it was her, her aunt, Hadi, the brother of Majid, one of the rooftop protesters, who kept me going. Melina is planning to stay out there 24 hours a day at least until our protest on Monday. When Fabia and I left at about 7.30pm, we left all the RAC placards and a pile of leaflets for Monday with Melina and the 15-20 other mainly Iranians who were going to stay there all night.
The SMH's Dylan Welsh has written a good report today, which also has quotes from Melina, as well as from Majid, one of the rooftop protesters.

There's plenty of negative news. The Daily Telegraph's poll, which asks "Do the Villawood asylum seekers have legitimate concerns?", is currently running at 7% yes, 93% no. http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/sydney-nsw/rooftop-detention-protest-at-villawood-detention-centre-worsens/story-e6freuzi-1226043096793
Jim Casey, state secretrary of the FBEU also did very well on the 7.30 Report http://www.abc.net.au/7.30/, by stressing that no members of the Fire Brigade union were injured, and saying that the attacks on firefighters have been exaggerated. Unfortunately, Jamal has made claims that firefighters were deliberately hosing down the rooftop protesters. They may have got wet while firefighters tried to put out the flames, but I refuse to believe that firefighters would have directly hosed down people whose building wasn't actually going up in flames.
On Lateline http://www.abc.net.au/lateline/, Sarah Hanson-Young did well, although she repeatedly evaded what I thought was a very good question by Tony Jones...ie. will the greens use their political leverage to block other key legislation in order to force a change to mandatory detention? They should!!
Meanwhile, a 17 year old Afghan detainee in Darwin has made a plea to the government not to send Afghan asylum seekers back to Afghanistan. http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2011/04/22/3198622.htm
Th second story on the Lateline site is about allegations of an AFP officer actually being present when a deported Tamil asylum seekers was susequently tortured. There's also an ABC news report of this here: http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2011/04/21/3198514.htm
This is the same Federal Police who are now "taking charge" of the situation at Villawood, and who "took charge" of Christmas Island 6 weeks ago.
I met the reporter for Al Jazeera yesterday afternoon out at Villawood. He said he's planning a more lengthy piece on mandatory detention in the coming weeks. He's described what happened at Villawood on Christmas Island 'predictable' http://blogs.aljazeera.net/asia/2011/04/21/predictable-riot
Here's the BBC. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-13153333
We now have three days until our protest at Villawood on Monday, 12pm at Chester Hill Station. We should strive to get the word out as far and wide as possible between now and then. We are holding a stall at the Woodville shopping centre next to Villawood station on Saturday 11-1. We have 100s of multi-lingual letters (English, Tamil, Arabic, Persian, Vietnamese, Mandarin and Spanish) that we have been putting into the letterboxes of people who live in the area around Villawood. I am also planning to leaflet the Michael Franti and Spearhead concert at the Enmore Theatre on Sunday night.
If anyone has other ideas, please go for it. I know there is a Food&Tunes festival at Adison Rd Marrickville tonight from 6-9, and an inner west rock gig at the Sandringham Hotel in Newtown from 1pm-midnight on both Sat and Sunday that should also draw a progressive crowd.
Our speakers so far are:
Iraj Moghadom (Iranian refugee)
Najeeba Wezfadost (Aghan refugee and spokesperson)
Adrian Francis (Tamil youth spokesperson, TBC)
Iraqi spokesperson (name TBC)
Jenny Diamond, General-Secretary, NSW Teachers' Federation
