Pakistan cricket great Wasim Akram to marry Melbourne woman

 PAKISTAN cricket great Wasim Akram is engaged to marry Melbourne woman Shaniera Thompson.
The famed left-arm bowler, 47, proposed on bended knee in their lounge room to Ms Thompson, 30.

"It was the romantic moment of my life because it was so genuine," she said.

A former public relations consultant from Brighton, Ms Thompson has converted to Islam, and will call Pakistan home.

She said Akram was nervous about proposing in the traditional way.

"He was really sweet about it.

He asked me what my dream proposal would be and I said I'm not the type of woman that likes a big scene. I would want it to be at home or somewhere private.



"Then I came into the lounge room and he was on his knee and asked me if I'd marry him."

But the joyful mood was soon broken by a worried look on Thompson's face.

She told Akram: "If we are doing this the traditional way, then you have to ask my father."

He called Ms Thompson's father, who gave his blessing.
The pair met in Melbourne in 2011 and Akram said he was happy he had found love.

"I never thought I would get married again, but I am lucky and very happy to find love again," he said.

"It just goes to show that life can give you a second chance."

Akram's first wife, Huma, died in 2009. They had two boys, now aged 15 and 12.

A RIOTER who was in the middle of every aggressive confrontation with police during last year's violent Muslim protests in the Sydney CBD has been sent to prison for more than four years.

And a magistrate said she would have sent father-of-one Mahmoud Eid, 26, to jail for even longer if she was allowed.

The Punchbowl plumber today faced sentencing in the Downing Centre Local Court for his role in the violent protests, which included rioting, assaulting a female officer and kicking police dog "Chuck’’.

Eid handed himself in two days after being exposed in the media as one of the protestors who turned on police during the September uprising.

He kicked Chuck, who early last year helped catch fugitive Malcolm Naden, with a "full-force’’ blow in the ribs and later pushed a female constable into a flower bed as two officers tried to arrest him.

When police sifted through footage taken during the protest, they tracked him as an "active participant" in all the violent clashes with police.

The riots began as a protest against the posting of a YouTube clip mocking Islam overseas.

Eid pleaded guilty in March to the three charges and today his lawyer Elie Rahme said his client was a man who clearly struggled to "control his emotions" and "express his feeling passively".

"He joined a mob which, it appeared, had similar people in it who were poor in expressing their emotions and poor at expressing their feelings," he said.

"Instead of speaking about their feelings, they chose to lash out with violence."

Eid previously served 15 months of a two-year jail term for a reprisal attack following the 2005 Cronulla riots and he also has prior convictions for assaulting police and affray.

Mr Rahme said the community would best be served if Eid was spared another jail term so he had a chance to "rehabilitate" and deal with his "anger-management" and "impulse-control" problems.

But Deputy Chief Magistrate Jane Culver said the 26-year-old must have known the protest could turn violent - given his history at Cronulla - yet he had spent hours following the clashes around the city.

"There is no noble cause which can justify a riot where violence is used against police," she said.

"Freedom of speech cannot be a vehicle by which violence can be perpetrated."

Ms Culver sentenced Eid to a minimum of 33 months in jail with a 16-month parole period, adding she would have given him four years for the rioting alone if she wasn't restricted to a two-year term in the local court.

Eid smiled and hugged his supporters before he was taken into custody.

Why cannot the word “Muslim” be used in a context where the religion and some of its adherents are subject to criticism? Apparent answer: because leaders of Western societies believe all faiths should be treated equally, even to the point of turning a blind eye to the fact that some ardent believers in the Muslim creed are outspoken in advocating acts of terror as legitimate components of their faith.

It is a major concern that the initial reactions of government leaders and most media commentators to the Boston bombings has been to ignore or brush aside the wider policy implications for the West. The record of the past week does not promote a sense of confidence.

First, there was a widespread attempt to avoid linking the fact, as became clear  later that same week, that the bombers were believers in, or heavily influenced by, the Muslim religion. It has now been reported that the bombers lived close to a local mosque, in an area near Boston where a considerable number of Moslems live, and that one of the bombers spent six months at “home” in the Russian republic of Dagestan, where the population is 80% Muslim and eruptions of insurgency in the name of establishing an Islamic state are a grim fact of daily life. Today come further reports that the elder bomber may have murdered three ‘friends’ by “slashing their throats right out of an al Qaeda training video.”

Second, while we look to the United States to be the leader of the Western world,  President Obama has consistently avoided using the word "Muslim". Indeed,  initially he did not even describe the bombings as terrorist acts. William Vizzard, a US criminal justice professor at California State University speculated that Obama might have hesitated to use the religion's name because it had become a ‘loaded word’, verbal shorthand for Islamic terrorism. This precisely describes the Boston attack. While it is too early to pass judgment on whether the relevant US agencies have learned anything from the mistakes before the September 11 massacres of 2001,  the apparent pass given the eldest bomber is worrisome. Quizzed by the FBI after a tip from Russia, he was turned loose with an apparent clean bill of health.

Third, the Australian Government, represented by Attorney General Dreyfus, made a woeful attempt to dismiss the web link between one of Australia’s extremist imams and the American bombers. This continued the government’s attempt to play down terrorism's risk to Australian security. The Opposition seems to have said nothing  on this (or any other) aspect. Are all our political leaders scared of criticising Muslim extremists for fear of losing votes or being accused of racism and discrimination?

Criticism by a political (or other) leader of extremist views held by some Muslims might cost votes in one or two electorates. But it is surely too important to ignore such views and leave the prevention and response solely to intelligence agencies, as Foreign Minister Bob Carr seems to advocate. Factual statements about terrorist activity by extremists may be controversial, but the dubious fear of political damage should not breed a dangerous and irresponsible silence.

The number of Islamic believers in Australia has not yet reached levels comparable to those of the UK and Europe, where an electoral backlash could occur. Although heavily concentrated, the total number of Muslims in Australia is 400,000 to 500,000, a very small percentage of our population. 

Fifth and finally, it is quite simply absurd to suggest that “it is too late to do anything about the problem.”  There is a variety of policy actions that could – and should – be taken without delay. The first of those must surely be  to acknowledge that a problem exists.

Umar that the Messenger of Allah said: I have been commanded to fight against people till they testify that there is no god but Allah, that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah, and they establish prayer, and pay Zakat and if they do it, their blood and property are guaranteed protection on my behalf except when justified by law, and their affairs rest with Allah. 

Sahih Muslim 4366—It has been narrated by ‘Umar b. al-Khattab that he heard the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) say: I will expel the Jews and Christians from the Arabian Peninsula and will not leave any but Muslim. 

Al-Bukhari, Al-Adab al-Mufrad 1103—Abu Hurayra reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “Do not give the People of the Book the greeting first. Force them to the narrowest part of the road.” 

Sahih al-Bukhari, Ch. 88—Narrated Ibn Umar that the Prophet said, “My livelihood is under the shade of my spear, and he who disobeys my orders will be humiliated by paying Jizya.”

WALEED Aly, the smiling face of Australian Islam, is an upbeat kind of guy. He remained so last week following the Boston Marathon bombings - not because of the bombings themselves, obviously, but because, as Aly put it: "We're finally maturing in the way we handle terrorism."

Some of us might hope for maturity from terrorists, who prefer bloodthirsty and irrational attacks on innocent targets over any kind of adult reasoning, but that's not going to happen anytime soon.

According to Aly, it's a sign of our increasing "maturity" that we now recognise terrorism as a "perpetual irritant, and that while it is tragic and emotionally lacerating, it kills relatively few people and is not any kind of existential threat".

Three people were killed in Boston due to irritants. Another 14 will endure the perpetual irritation of losing one or more limbs. By last Friday, 57 remained in hospital suffering emotional laceration to their faces and bodies. Hey, this new mature talk is fun.

 Aly was also encouraged by a post-bombing reluctance to blame extremist Islam. "It's possible," he wrote, "that this reticence is a product of the very real suspicion that the perpetrators here are self-styled American patriots. At this point, most analysts are leaning that way."

Indeed they were. But, then again, they always do, right up until the moment they're inevitably proved wrong.

"Let's Hope the Boston Marathon Bomber Is a White American," ran one headline in Salon, over some analysis by David Sirota, a white American himself, as columnist Mark Steyn noted, who "finds it less discomforting to his Princess Fluffy Bunny worldview to see his compatriots as knuckle-dragging nutjobs rather than confront all the apparent real-world contradictions of the diversity quilt".

In Australia, Labor speechwriter Bob Ellis decided that the National Rifle Association (NRA) was most probably behind the attacks. "It seems to me likely that this was not al-Qaeda or a lone madman," wrote Princess Fluffy Bobby, "but more likely, much more likely, the NRA. No responsibility will be claimed by any group, and there will be no second attack; and no culprit ever found."

Ellis previously predicted, ahead of the last state election, that "Labor will hold government, in a perhaps hung parliament, in NSW". Reverse Bob's predictions and he has Rolex reliability.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev could have used some reversing last Thursday night in Boston, where his brother Dzhokhar ran him over during a shootout with police. Sadly for those who wished the bombing suspects would turn out to be rednecks, the only knuckles being dragged were Tamerlan's, behind a stolen SUV.

Imagine if the brothers Tsarnaev were instead Otis and Crandall, Alabama boys who'd driven up to Boston for a final bloody showdown with Barack Obama's liberal America. Right now you'd be reading reports about the menace of fundamentalist Christianity.Alas, both Tsarnaev boys were of the Islamic faith, a fact that sends media analysis into "we cannot know" mode.

Recall the Fort Hood slaughter of 2009, when Nidal Malik Hasan screamed "Allahu Akbar" before murdering 13 people. That's a clue right there, but one subsequent piece of mature analysis began with the line: "The motive for the deadly Fort Hood shooting rampage that has left America reeling is still unclear." A Guardian writer dismissed Hasan's Islamic vow: "My understanding is that it's something Arab people often shout before doing something or other. It's used in many different situations." Such as opening fire on infidels.

Hasan was 39 at the time of his motiveless attack, which should give pause to Sunrise presenter and apparent terrorism expert Andrew O'Keefe. "When you look back over ... the history of terrorism in the United States, the common link is not Islam. It's young men," O'Keefe said on Saturday.

Why, O'Keefe has cracked the case wide open! September 11 ringleader Mohamed Atta: just 33. Fellow 9/11 hijacker Hani Hanjour: only 29. Khalid al-Mihdhar: a mere lad of 26, the same age as Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who was wearing explosives and SUV tyre marks when he was converted from young man to dead irritant.

The usual next step in any terrorism talk seeking to evade harsh views of Islam is to spread the blame. Sunrise host Sam Armytage asked guest Keith Suter. "Why would someone who pretty much has had an American education and upbringing perform an act of terrorism like this?" Suter's response: "This is the big mystery. Why do these people end up getting radicalised? Is it something about living in the local culture?" Yep. It's still America's fault.

The Boston Globe's Kevin Cullen was on radio the morning after the big Tsarnaev hunt: "A caller came on the air and started talking about how we've got to look in the mirror and ask what we as Americans have done to create angry young men like this."

There are those young men again. A mature investigation might look at another common factor. Whatever could it be?

THEY are the Muslim women using sport to smash cultural stereotypes - just don't ask them who Adam Goodes is.

How long before the "normal" sports uniform, Bikini,Swimming Costume becomes compulsory for all women so as not to offend the minority "normal" Muslim participants?

How long ago was it when we all said it would never happen ? and they are less than 2% of the population imagine what they will be demanding and enforcing when they are at say 4 or God forbid 5%.  
The Auburn Tigers are the first predominantly Muslim women's AFL team in the country, and although they admit to not knowing much about Aussie rules, that hasn't stopped them using the sport to build cultural awareness.

The team suffered a 130-0 loss to Macquarie University yesterday, but captain Lael Kassem said they want much more than to just put points on the scoreboard.

Ms Kassem, 21, from Auburn, said: "Sport can change everyone's lives and it has done that for so many of our girls.

"When we started the team we didn't think about winning.

"We just wanted to be the most respected team and the most culturally aware team."

Ms Kassem said many of the women had never watched a game of football live or even seen stars such as Sydney Swans player Goodes on TV.

The Muslim team members respect their religion by wearing the traditional head scarf and cover their limbs when they step out on the field.

"The majority of the girls in our team wear the Islamic veil and they can wear tracksuits if that makes them more comfortable," Ms Kassem said.

"We enforce that we are representing our religion so we go on to the field with the best manners and demonstrate Muslims are normal."

So just how "normal" are Muslim women in Sport and what do they really think of their Infidel team mates and fellow sportswomen?

Muslim Women in Sport
The benefits derived from sport can not be denied. Not only do they have physical and social benefits, but also essential psychological consequences. Since sport is also a compulsory part of the curriculum in all schools, it is important to address the many Islamic conflicts that us sisters may face.

The Need for Sport
Men and women alike are in need of sport and exercise. Physical fitness is certainly encouraged, just as a balanced diet is endorsed, and harmful substances are prohibited. Exercise is also conducive to a more balanced emotional state, as it aids in the release of harmful free radicals and excess hormones. Mundane routines must also be broken otherwise it could affect a women\'s input into society, as well as her relationship with her husband and family.

The Sahaabah were aware of these issues, and would exhort others for the same. \'Ali bin Abi Talib (r.a.a) said: \"Refresh your minds from time to time, for a tired mind becomes blind.\" Abu Darda` (r.a.a) also commented: \"I entertain my heart with something trivial in order to make it stronger in the service of the Truth.\" 

The Prophet (s.a.w) advised his followers to engage in many forms of sport, which even today are considered of the best form of exercise. The Prophet (s.a.w) himself would engage in wrestling, racing, archery and horse races. 

While Aisha (r.a.a) was on a journey along with the Apostle of Allah (s.a.w), she had a race with him and outpaced him. As time passed, the Prophet (s.a.w) wished to avenge for his loss, so he raced her again, in which case he outpaced her, and remarked: \"This is for that outpacing.\"

The Etiquette\'s of Sport

The restrictions on women participating in sport or physical activity is more than that of men. All Islamic observances must be followed, regardless of any school policies or social stigmas. Our obedience to our Creator cannot be given preference to a creature of Allah. 
When participating in sports, the clothing must be Islamically acceptable. This would therefore exclude shorts, t-shirts, leotards, swimming costumes etc. 
It is very important to ensure that there are no males watching. Mixing of sexes is forbidden in normal situations, except in special situations under certain conditions, let alone in a sporting arena or exercise facility. It also restricts your activities, and modesty would not allow this in any case.

Swimming
In most female-only schools, there are always male teachers around. Hence wearing even body suits is not sufficient, therefore to remove yourself from this activity is the only solution. There are some female-only baths or swimming complexes, yet even this is not suitable for the purposes of Muslim women. The following tradition treats this point:

\"Some women from Homs or from Sham (now the area of Damascus) came to \'A\'ishah. She asked, \'Do you enter the public baths? I heard the Messenger of Allah saying that a woman who undresses anywhere else other than in her own house tears off the Satr (shelter) which lies between her and her Lord .\' \" [At-Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud]

It is not only a problem of Satr, but also revealing yourself to disbelievers, an important point which ssisters are ignoranor careless of. Permission for a Muslim woman to reveal her hair, arms etc. is permitted to her husband, father, mother and so on.
Non-Muslim women are excluded from this permission, because contact with them might easily lead to disastrous results. That is why the Khalif \'Umar wrote to Abu \'Ubaidah Ibn al-Jarrah, the Governor of Syria, to prohibit the Muslim women from going to the baths with the women of the Ahl al-Kitab (the People of the Book). [At-Tabari, Ibn Jazir]. According to Ibn \'Abbas \"...a Muslim woman is not allowed to display herself before the women of the unbelievers and non-Muslim poll-tax payers (Ahl al-Dhimmah) any more than she can display herself before other men\" [At-Tabari]. 
This distinction between women on grounds of character and religion is intended to safeguard Muslim women against the influence of women whose moral and cultural background is either not known or is objectionable from the Islamic point of view.

Gyms
Although many women-only gyms have become popular, we have the same problem as with baths, that being in the presence of non-Muslim women. However, as long as loose clothing is worn along with proper head covering, this problem can be avoided.

Self-Defence
Particularly in Western countries, this is an important form of popular exercise. Sisters must be careful to train only with other women, to maintain loose clothing and head cover, and not to attack at the head, as the Prophet (s.a.w) has forbidden us to hit on the face while training.

Watching Sport
Many sisters find themselves in situations where they will be watching sports on TV, at school carnivals, or going to matches. Stadiums are not advisable places for Muslims in general, because of the language, drinking and scenery. Allah has commanded the believing women to lower their gaze, and sport comes as no exception, especially with guys in shorts.

Other Points
Sports and exercise should be judged according to the level of modesty involved. Games such as netball played in a public arena is not befitting to the honour of a Muslimah. No compromises can be made in terms of clothing or mixing. Public showers at female schools is totally forbidden. Many sisters will also apply deodorants after a work-out. What must be kept in mind is the Prophet\'s warning on a fragrant perfumes: \"The woman who perfumes herself and passes through a gathering is an adulteress.\" Some fragrant-free deodorants are available, otherwise apply enough so that the fragrance is not apparent. 

A married woman must also have the permission of her husband beforehand, and must ensure that non of her duties as a wife are being sacrificed as a result of her activities. 
To keep in line with today's excessive and unwarranted demands for women to have a \"supermodel\" physique, many sisters will exercise for this sole purpose, only adding more stress and anguish to themselves. Keep it as a fun activity, involve your husband with it and make it an intimate part of your marriage life. Keep in mind that over-exercising can result in unrepairable tissue damage, and will turn you off it. Bodily exhaustion is not called for, as Allah (s.w.t) tells us: \"Allah burdens not a person beyond his scope.\" [2: 286] .

MOURNERS were told they were "not welcome" by a cleric at a former policeman's funeral because they were non-Muslims.

The family of Erdinc Ozen, a former police officer and member of the navy reserves, are demanding an apology following the incident at Sydney's Auburn Gallipoli Mosque last month.

Mr Ozen, a Turkish-born Australian who served as a policeman until 2011, died from a brain aneurysm last month.

His brother Tunc said a number of senior police and friends from his fishing club at the Seven Hills-Toongabbie RSL left the service after the unexpected directive from acting president Dr Abdurrahman Asaroglu. Others attending included an 87-year-old World War II veteran and former NSW premier Nathan Rees.

"He told everyone it's a Muslim prayer service, all women and non-Muslims were not welcome and they had to leave the mosque area," Tunc Ozen said.

"All of his friends were not Muslim, so they had to leave - it was a big shock. It upset a lot of people."

Most hurtful for his family was that when it came time to move Erdinc's coffin, his closest friends were not allowed to take part in the proceedings.

"These complete strangers were grabbing my brother's coffin, not his mates, as a result of what this bloke had said," Mr Ozen said.

Mr Ozen has written to the mosque and Turkish consulate demanding an apology.

 "He didn't raise any of this with us. There were plenty of opportunities," he said.

"I've spent as much time thanking people for coming as I have apologising to them over what happened."

Islamic Friendship Association president Keysar Trad said: "What was done does not run consistently with our traditions. Our religion teaches us to be compassionate towards people grieving."
