Australian terrorists Khaled Sharrouf and Mohamed Elomar share extremist views supporting ISIS through Twitter

“BY THE will of Allah, heads will be removed.”

“Can’t wait to see an Australian soldier crying.”

“Those who oppose the Khilafah should be crucified.”

These are just some of the chilling comments made by two Australian men who have joined the Islamic State (ISIS) fundamentalist uprising in Syria and Iraq.

Former Sydney residents Khaled Sharrouf and Mohamed Elomar have joined the ISIS movement in the Middle East, and they are using the megaphone of social media to spread jihadist statements and take on their detractors.

They have both been prolific since joining Twitter a few months ago, sharing death threats and shockingly violent images.

Convicted terrorist Sharrouf was born in Australia and lived in Sydney’s west until he fled the country on his brother Mustafa’s passport in December.

He spent time in jail for his part the in a foiled “Terror Nine” plot to blow up targets in Sydney and Melbourne.

He is now believed to be in Syria, where he has joined the Sunni revolt and has proudly tweeted photos of himself with machine guns and military vehicles.

On Saturday, he delivered a plea for others to join the extremist movement, tweeting “come and be part of what we have dreamt For for decades” (sic).

His first tweet when he joined in May was of a little boy holding a machinegun.

He also tweeted a shockingly violent photograph of a man whose head had been blown away.

Elomar, a boxer, has also joined the fighting in the Middle East and he has been very busy on Twitter despite only joining in April. He has used the site to spout hateful anti-democracy rhetoric, tweeting as many as 11 times yesterday alone.

Detractors around the world have taken to Twitter to challenge the men’s comments.

In response to one Australian detractor over Twitter, Elomar said burning his Australian passport was the best day of his life.

Australian police and security agencies are aware of the two men and they will not be permitted back into the country should they attempt to return.

Security sources told The Daily Telegraph last month that they were concerned Sharrouf was using social media to “whip up” radical sentiments back in Australia.

The military situation in Iraq remains perilous, with hopes of regaining control of nearly half the country from Sunni extremists suffering dual setbacks yesterday.

The Iraqi Parliament failed to form a new government and insurgents killed a top military officer who was leading the defence of Baghdad’s western suburbs.

The uprising represents the biggest threat to the country’s survival since US troops invaded in 2003.

Sharrouf and Elomar are among  as many as 300 young Australians who have left for the Middle East with hopes of joining the battles  according to sources close to families and communities in western Sydney.

WHO let these jihadists into our country? Must we run this danger, just to boast our immigration system isn’t racist?

“We will always have, a non-discriminatory immigration policy,” Prime Minister Tony Abbott declared three years ago.

Admirable in principle. But how wise in this Age of Terror?

Consider. More than 150 Australians, many of Lebanese descent, have joined jihadists fighting in Iraq and Syria, and will pose a danger to us on their return.

One, Khaled Sharrouf, lived on a disability pension in Sydney but was last week pictured apparently in Iraq, waving the flag of the 

Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, whose Sunni jihadists are shooting and beheading countless unarmed Shia Iraqis.

In another Facebook photo, believed posted by fellow Australian jihadist Mohamed Elomar, Sharrouf poses with a gun next to slaughtered Iraqi civilians.

Another two Australian jihadists feature in an ISIS video calling on Muslims to join them, and dozens of Australians in Sydney and Melbourne have posted support for ISIS on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

A spokesman for Sydney’s al-Risalah Islamic centre even declared ISIS’s success inspired a “feeling of joy”. When a Perth “imam” spoke at the centre last December, the banner behind him featured the ISIS logo.

This has been the troubling truth since even before the September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001, hailed by our then Mufti, Taj el-Din al-Hilali, as “God’s work against oppressors”.

The numbers are now alarming. Last year ASIO said it had “investigated several hundred mostly Australia-based individuals who are advocates of a violent Islamist ideology”.

It is important to stress most Muslims are peaceful. But it is also true that Muslim immigration has exposed Australians to a level of danger — including extraordinary gun crime in Western Sydney — that immigration from India, Europe and China has not.

Fact is: culture counts. Ties of blood and faith have too often proved stronger that the loyalty multicultural Australia weakly asks, particularly in communities which haven’t done well here.

For instance, of the 21 Muslims here jailed for terrorism offences, at least 11 were born in Lebanon or to Lebanese parents, including Sharrouf and Elomar’s uncle, a ringleader of the 2005 Pendennis plot to attack Sydney targets.

We can’t rely on the conventional checks against importing such trouble. ASIO can’t screen out likely terrorists when the second generation is more radical than the immigrant parents.

Indeed, nine of our 21 jailed Muslim terrorists were born in Australia, and only four grew up overseas.

The conclusion is irresistible: the more Muslim immigrants we admit, the more terrorists we risk one day having.

That was not so 100 years ago, but mass immigration, cheap travel and the internet has changed the nature of immigration.

Some of our least assimilated migrants are so numerous that in some areas they form almost colonies.

With satellite TV beaming in programs from home, it has never been easier for newcomers to retain their culture, faith and values.

Unfortunately, Islamic culture today includes a jihadist ideology so strong that 17 of the 18 terrorist groups banned here are Islamic.

Judge Anthony Whealy, in sentencing the Pendennis plotters, described their ideology well: “Each was driven by the concept that the world was, in essence, divided between those who adhered strictly and fundamentally to a rigid concept of the Muslim faith, indeed, a medieval view of it, and to those who did not.

“Secondly, each was driven by the conviction that Islam throughout the world was under attack, particularly at the hands of the United 

States and its allies. In this context, Australia was plainly included.

“Thirdly, each offender was convinced that his obligation as a devout Muslim was to come to the defence of Islam and other Muslims 
overseas.

“Fourthly, it was the duty of each individual offender, indeed a religious obligation, to respond to the worldwide situation by preparing for violent jihad in this country, here in Australia.”

That is like the message that ISIS today sends supporters here through computers and smart phones.

Again, most Muslims mean only peace. But the head of the NSW Counter Terrorism Squad last month criticised our Sunni leaders for doing little to stop followers joining jihadists in Syria.

The Lebanese Muslim Association’s reaction was alarmingly complacent: “We see this as being blown out of proportion because these guys are going to fight for a cause and Australia is not part of that.”

So how should Australia respond?

The Prime Minister says he’ll detain returning jihadists, but surely restricting Muslim immigration would give us fewer to monitor.

That will seem racist, but if Islamic leaders can’t stamp out jihadism we may have to defend ourselves as best we can.

The Daily Telegraph understands customs officials will be given higher-level intelligence briefs in the wake of the failure that enabled convicted Sydney terrorist Khaled Sharrouf to slip out of the country last year using his brother’s passport.

The Daily Telegraph yesterday revealed Sharrouf, a convicted terrorist from south-western Sydney, is in Iraq with the militant group ISIL, which is trying to overthrow the Iraqi government.

Yesterday Prime Minister Tony Abbott said the border protection agencies were on high alert for up to 150 Australians believed to be fighting in either Syria or Iraq seeking to return to Australia and for associates trying to leave Australia to join them.

More than 50 passports had been cancelled, the Daily Telegraph revealed yesterday.

But a draft report of the Cousins’ review is believed to have uncovered a 9/11 “silo mentality” scenario in ­Australia — a reference to US intelligence failures uncovered after 9/11 — where vital intelligence which could have stopped Sharrouf at the gate was not shared.

Senior government sources revealed new intelligence-sharing arrangements were being rolled out to ­ensure customs officers at airport gates had greater ­access to data that could help them identify ­people on watch lists.

Mr Morrison said the Sharrouf incident had been “an early wake-up call” that had exposed weaknesses in the chain, which were now being addressed.

He said the government was also “rebuilding capacity” into the system after budget cuts to customs under the ­previous government of ­almost $700 million.

HYDE Park rioter Ahmed Elomar will spend at least two and a half years in jail for brutally bashing a police officer. The former champion boxer hit 
the officer with a pole during a confrontation on September 15, 2012, in Sydney’s angry Islamic march as part of a global protest against the anti-Islamic YouTube clip The Innocence of Muslims.

Judge Donna Woodburne yesterday said Elomar, the last of seven rioters to have their case finalised in court, had “agitated the crowd” as part of a group of “aggressive men”.

She fixed a total sentence of four years and eight months, and said only a full-time custodial sentence would match the crime.

The man, whose own mother described him as “not very intelligent”, became “overcome with the occasion” of the protests, the court heard.

Elomar’s barrister Greg James QC told the Sydney District Court during a ­hearing earlier this week that his client, a former champion boxer who competed in more than 20 professional bouts, was suffering an “impaired intellectual state”.

But Judge Woodburne said Elomar’s “cognitive ­impairment” had not ­“deprived him of the ability to appreciate it was wrong to bash a police officer in the head, as he did”.

Elomar smiled at the judge as the sentence hearing, which lasted almost two hours, finished.

The court heard the ­31- year-old married man “deliberately and forcefully hit a man who had done nothing more than get up that day and put his uniform on.”

Senior-Constable Jason Blanchard was struck with a pole and left bleeding from the head, with the court told the balaclava-clad Elomar “disappeared” into the almost 400-strong crowd after ­hitting the officer.

“(The officer) had no ­opportunity to see it coming,” Judge Woodburne said, ­adding police work is often “difficult, challenging and dangerous.

During the protest, ­Elomar carried a sign which read: “Our dead are in paradise, your dead are in hell.”

The charge of recklessly wounding a police officer and causing actual bodily harm, carries a maximum sentence of 14 years but Elomar ­received a 15 per cent ­discount for pleading guilty.

Judge Woodburne said the non-parole period would begin from September 2013, a year after the riots, meaning Elomar is eligible for release in March 2016.

His sentencing brings to an end more than 18 months of court hearings involving people charged over the riots.

Last year, protester ­Mohammed Issaka angered the court when he refused to stand for a magistrate. He later apologised.

An urgent review initiated by Immigration Minister Scott Morrison and Attorney-General George Brandis ­following the border blunder, known as the Cousins’ review, is believed to have found holes in the security net from the airport barrier all the way up to ASIO.
