Both Romney and Abbott have been pilloried for speaking the truth. Last month, Obama voters made much of a frank response Romney gave to a supporter at a private gathering. He had been asked how the election was shaping and replied: "Well, there are 47 per cent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. "There are 47 per cent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe they are victims, who believe that government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it. "That that's an entitlement and government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what. I mean, the president starts off with 48, 49 ... I mean, he starts off with a huge number. "These are people who pay no income tax; 47 per cent of Americans pay no income tax. "So our message of low taxes doesn't connect. He'll be out there talking about tax cuts for the rich. "I mean, that's what they sell every four years. And so my job is not to worry about those people. "I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives. "What I have to do is convince the 5 to 10 per cent in the centre, that are independents, that are thoughtful, that look at voting one way or the other depending upon, in some cases, emotion, whether they like the guy or not, what he looks like." There were predictable media claims Romney was being disrespectful of low-income workers but the underlying truth about the spread of the entitlement mentality in the US was unchallenged. Yet Romney had the gumption to stand by his comments, though he admitted they were "not elegantly stated". His campaign, he said, was "about helping people take more responsibility and becoming employed again, particularly those who don't have work". Many Americans and Australians would see nothing wrong with his approach. As one chatroom commentator noted: "Did I miss something? Since when is what Romney said surprising? Isn't this what we hear on discussion boards and forums, day in and day out from the Right? 'You're on welfare. You want a free handout. I work for a living, you don't. You're lazy. Get a job'. "Who the hell thinks this is something new? The only thing new about it is hearing it being said in such stark terms from a presidential candidate in this day and age." Obama promised to lift poor Americans out of the welfare trap but there are now more people on food stamps than ever before. Gillard's record is just as bad, with more people on benefits and more long-term unemployed. Obama inherited what he thought was a poorly-performing economy with annual deficits of around $US400 billion. Today they run at more than a trillion. Gillard inherited Treasurer Wayne Swan from her predecessor Kevin Rudd. As Treasurer, Swan has managed to convert a $70 billion surplus into a gross debt of more than $250 billion. Obama's budgets rely on the US printing more money and borrowing more cash from the Chinese. Gillard's budgets rely on borrowing and money-shuffling accounting tricks. Both leaders essentially believe in wealth redistribution through big central government. During the 2008 campaign, Obama notoriously told Joe Wurzelbacher - Joe the Plumber - "when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody". But the Obama experiment has failed Americans, just as the Rudd-Gillard experiment has failed Australians. Obama's monument to wealth redistribution is his Obamacare package that would centralise greater control of the American population in Washington. Gillard's monument is the carbon tax that affects every Australian, not just the 500 "biggest polluters" she claimed when she introduced it. Both have been responsible for introducing green energy policies that have cost jobs and hobbled their economies. Neither Obama nor Gillard understand how economies work or how wealth is created. Both think their respective federal governments are the solution, their opponents think they are part of the problem. Neither leader has shown either a great interest in, or an understanding of, foreign policy. On Obama's watch, Osama bin Laden was killed by US troops but Obama tried to take credit for the operation. Gillard's foreign forays from East Timor to Malaysia and Indonesia have been embarrassing. Obama is running on promises of change, just as he did four years ago. His years in office offer little to recommend him. Romney had an enviable career in private business and a laudable record as governor of Massachusetts. He can point to achievements. America remains Australia's most important international partner. We need an America with a strong leader, Obama is not that person.

Australia is providing a case study in the self-destructive politics of green ideology, when believers of the religion of global warming gain political leverage. Between 1996 and 2007, John Howard became Australia's second-longest-serving prime minister, with his center-right administration being regarded as the epitome of responsible economic management, overseeing the "good years for Australia." In 2007, Kevin Rudd's left-wing Labor Party gained office, and by 2009, a six-year run of budget surpluses gave way to the largest deficits in modern politics.
A slew of ideologically charged policies followed, including a nationally subsidised home insulation scheme which was unregulated, resulting in millions of wasted funds and even a death due to unqualified installation, and a public education "revolution" to renovate school buildings where the government happily paid exorbitant over-inflated tenders for unnecessary and, in some cases, unwanted refurbishments, blowing over $1 billion. This "revolution" was overseen by Rudd's deputy, Julia Gillard. With plummeting polls leading into the 2010 election, having been bestowed with the mantle of the worst prime minister in Australia's history, Rudd's leadership was successfully challenged by Gillard. However, Gillard was no shoe-in for prime m,inister, and to counter an effective campaign by the conservatives who warned that another Labor government would mean an unpopular carbon emissions tax, Gillard declared that "there will be no carbon tax under the government I lead."
The election was even tighter than predicted and resulted in the first hung parliament since 1940. To secure power, Gillard chose to cut a deal with three independents and a lone Greens member of parliament. Despite her declaration to the contrary, Gillard was now over a (green) barrel and was forced to renege on her commitment not to introduce a carbon tax in order to honor her agreement with the Greens, whose agenda not surprisingly included a carbon tax. It's taken Gillard two years to implement the controversial tax, during which time she has been irreverently referred to as "Ju-liar." Thoughts of staying in power have no doubt helped her withstand such criticism, along with the support of a sympathetic Obama. During his visit here in November last year, he expressed his support for the tax, saying, "I think that's good for the world ... I actually think, over the long term, it's good for our economies, as well, because it's my strong belief that industries, utilities, individual consumers -- we're all going to have to adapt how we use energy and how we think about carbon." The tax came into effect at the start of the 2013 financial year, yet after only a few weeks, the vociferous reaction from the Australian public can't be ignored. They are smarting not only from a new controversial tax, but also from a prime minister who expressly said she would not implement it. The foundation of the Labor Party, working-class families, are feverishly adjusting their weekly grocery budgets to account for a policy that many would have never thought possible. Long-term voters of the left are shell-shocked, feeling cheated and abandoned. Far from serving the working class, a carbon tax is the Trojan Horse of what many view as eco-terrorist environmentalism designed at saving trees -- or worse, generating a warm fuzzy feeling inside -- rather than jobs and a sustainable future. One would hope that deliberate untruths would be uncommon in Western politics, but outright lying should never be tolerated. There has been much philosophical deliberation about why people lie, but ultimately in politics the issue is whether the electorate is prepared to tolerate such conduct. The polls here suggest a distinct lack of mercy. In the past weeks, reports indicate that the Labor-Greens coalition is under immense pressure, with Labor Party members labeling the Greens as "extremists" and the Greens, ironically honestly, describing Labor as lacking values and standing for nothing. The relevance of Australia's experience for the U.S. is that it highlights the degree of ideological blindness the left can be prone to. In Australia's 150-seat House of Representatives (the equivalent of Congress), the Greens secured one seat. Notwithstanding the vagaries of the Australian electoral system, that equates to roughly 0.6% of the vote. Simplistically put, by making a deal with the Greens, the incumbent administration has implemented a policy that less than 1% of the electorate voted for.

The concern to a modern liberal democracy like Australia is not that minority political parties such as the Greens exist, but that they are offered a place at the table without the consent of the public at large. Obama, as far as I can tell from here, was forced to shelve his plans for a carbon tax because even the Democrats could see the negative economic consequences. Yet Gillard has chosen to somehow live in denial of its affects on the long-term health of the Australian economy, which is beyond me -- but then there are so many truths extreme liberals fail to acknowledge that it's not entirely surprising. Bush had his critics, but at least one knew where he stood. John Howard certainly held his ground on an issue, no matter the reaction of the chattering masses. The danger of the left's liberalism is that it is so focused on popularity that its policies are often extremely short-sighted. Gillard must be struggling to reconcile her short-term desire for power with her integrity. Reports suggest that Obama is doing his best to "bankrupt" the coal power industry. What should be of concern to U.S. voters is that Obama's energy policy could well be the thin edge of the wedge of increasingly-left-of-center ideology crystalizing into policy. A Nigerian Islamic Sharia court has banned Twitter and Facebook debates on the country's first wrist amputation for theft, according to court papers seen by AFP on Tuesday.
The Magajin Gari Sharia court in the northern city of Kaduna on Monday ordered the Civil Rights Congress (CRC), one of the country's leading rights groups, to suspend its Twitter and Facebook online debates on the amputation, which was carried out in 2000.

The court granted an interim injunction "restraining the respondents either by themselves or their agents... from opening a chat forum on Facebook, Twitter, or any blog for the purpose of the debate on the amputation of Malam Buba Bello Jangebe," said the order.
Jangebe was the first person to have had his right wrist amputated on the orders of a Sharia court in Zamfara State, a year after 12 northern Nigerian states adopted the strict Islamic penal code.
The order followed a suit filed Friday by the Association of Muslim Brotherhood of Nigeria, a pro-Sharia group based in the northern political capital of Kaduna, which argued that internet forums would be used as "a mockery of the Sharia system as negative issues will be discussed".
In the wake of the interim injunction, the case is set for hearing on Monday.
The head of the CRC, Shehu Sani, confirmed to AFP that he was served with the court papers Monday.
"We opened the blog, the Facebook and Twitter chats 10 days ago to serve as a platform for which Nigerians could air their opinions on Sharia law as a whole and the justification or otherwise of the amputation of the hand of Malam Buba Bello Jangebe," Sani said on the phone from Kaduna.
Out of Nigeria's 36 states, 12 re-adopted a strict version of Sharia in 1999 nearly a century after it had been abandoned.
Zamfara state in the predominantly Muslim north of Nigeria pioneered the move after the country returned to civilian rule following 15 years of military dictatorship.

THE Federal Government will make internet censorship compulsory for all Australians and could ban controversial websites on euthanasia and anorexia.Australia's level of net censorship will put it in the same league as China, Cuba, Iran and North Korea.
The Government will not let users opt out of the proposed national internet filter.Broadband, Communications and Digital Economy Minister Stephen Conroy said the Government's $44.2 million internet censorship plan would now include two tiers — one level of mandatory filtering for all Australians and an optional level that will provide a "clean feed", censoring adult material.Despite planning to hold "live trials" before the end of the year, Senator Conroy said it was not known what content the mandatory filter would bar, with euthanasia or proanorexia sites on the chopping block."We are talking about mandatory blocking, where possible, of illegal material," he said.

Governments spearheaded by China, Brazil, India, Russia and Saudi Arabia are trying to place the Internet under the control of the United Nations or its member governments, a move that the United States and other developed countries are determined to resist.
The issue has cropped up in preparatory talks for a world summit on the information society to be held from Dec. 10 to 12 in Geneva, with the stated goal of advancing the management and worldwide use of the Internet, especially in poorer nations.Delegates from rich and developing nations remained divided on the matter at the end of the latest round of talks on Friday, senior diplomats said."We will continue to fight hard to ensure that Internet governance remains a balanced enterprise among all stakeholders and continues to be private-sector-led," said the chief of the U.S. delegation, Ambassador David A. Gross.Pierre Gagne, executive director of the world summit, earlier identified control of the Internet as one of two key issues in the talks, adding that control and financial issues "will probably be the last issues to be resolved" at the summit.
Many developing countries argue that governments need to play a greater role in managing and setting policy for the Internet, while the United States, the European Union and Japan, among others, say government interference could stifle the development of the dynamic medium.The Internet, at present, is loosely managed by a private organization in California named the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, which coordinates such matters as Internet servers and domain names.Countries with developing and emerging economies would like to hand over that authority to a U.N. agency, such as the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).
The Internet medium is too important to be left in the hands of one major power, some argue, and others say problems such as cybercrime and protection of intellectual property rights require greater government involvement.Yoshio Utsumi, secretary-general of the ITU, which will host the December summit, said in an interview that Brazil is "a very strong advocate" of his agency taking over the Internet.China, Russia, India, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Senegal and many other African countries were also "keen" for the United Nations to have a role, he said.But, he said, the differences of opinion were "too big" to be settled before the delegates meet in Geneva next month. Other diplomats said there might be no decision even then.The summit also will deal with questions such as how to block the spread of viruses, prevent unwanted "spam" and prevent the use of the medium for criminal purposes such as identity theft, Western officials said.Russia has proposed that the final declaration address Internet security in both "civil and security fields," but many countries fear that any reference to military security could limit freedom of expression, Mr. Utsumi said.There also is pressure for a strong statement in support of free expression on the Internet but sources said that is being resisted by China and other countries that want to maintain strong oversight of the medium.Nitin Desai, special adviser to U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, said the core purpose of the summit is to establish a common vision for the information society, to utilize new technologies to overcome poverty and to find ways to make Internet access affordable to all.The president of Senegal has proposed the creation of a "global digital solidarity fund" to help poor countries establish Internet access.
The ITU estimates that fewer than 1 percent of low-income country residents are Internet subscribers.The United States and other industrialized countries say the existing mechanisms are sufficient and argue that funding a new international bureaucracy would not be an effective way to spread information technology.Poor countries would be better served by establishing an environment in which the private sector would develop the needed infrastructure, the industrialized countries say.
