A MUSLIM accused of plotting a terrorist attack on a NSW army base said the Black Saturday bushfires were Allah's punishment on Australians, a court heard yesterday.
In a secretly recorded phone call, Saney Edow Aweys told a man in Somalia the bushfires were divine intervention and punishment, prosecutor Nick Robinson SC said.
Mr Robinson told a Victorian Supreme Court jury Aweys and four other Melbourne men planned a terrorist attack on the Holsworthy army base with high-powered weapons. They wanted to kill as many soldiers as possible before they were either killed or overwhelmed.
When local clerics refused to provide a fatwa or religious decree to permit the plan to go ahead, co-accused Yacqub Khayre travelled to Somalia to obtain one, Mr Robinson said.
Wissam Mahmoud Fattal carried out a reconnaissance of the Holsworthy base to assess its suitability for the attack. In transcripts of intercepted calls to his parents, Fattal talks of martyrdom and complains of the Australian army involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan.
He said: "If I find a way to kill the army I'm gonna do it."
On trial are Aweys, 26, of Carlton North, Khayre, 22, of Meadow Heights, Abdirahman Mohamud Ahmed, 25, of Preston, Fattal, 33, of Melbourne and Nayef El Sayed, 25 of Glenroy.
They have pleaded not guilty to conspiring with each other and persons unknown between February 1 and August 4 last year to do acts in preparation for, or planning a terrorist act or acts.

Justice Betty King warned the jury that the trial was about the alleged commission of a criminal offence, not about Islam.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, I was preparing for a media conference in the offices of the Australian Embassy in Washington, when the terrible news of the first attack on the World Trade Center filtered through. Initially I thought it was a terrible accident, however events moved at pace and, with the attack on tower two and the subsequent explosion at the Pentagon, it became apparent that America was under attack, and by a quirk of fate the leader of one of the US's staunchest allies was in the midst of it.
I was scheduled to speak at a joint sitting of the US Congress the next day, an opportunity that could not go ahead. I instead went to Congress to express Australia's support, and my entourage was the only party allowed into the chamber. The emotion of the moment and shared grief left an indelible mark upon my consciousness, for the September 11 attack was not just on America, but on all things that our great freedom-loving societies stand for, as subsequent attacks have shown.
The US-Australian alliance has transcended the test of time. We stood side by side in all the major conflicts of the 20th century, endured depressions and the tribulation of worldwide natural disasters, and together we faced and defeated the scourges of totalitarian ideologies of the 20th century. I knew at that moment that together again we would have to face an even more invidious challenge, that of religious extremism in the 21st century.
The Los Angeles to New York 2010 run is a practical reflection of the values and the aspirations that two great freedom-loving societies enjoy. The run rejects the notions of exclusion, of hatred and above all of extreme ideologies. The run rather embraces the enlightenment of life, its liberties and freedom's and it rejoices in the goodness that is the essence of the human race. When we immigrated from Jerusalem, Jordan in January, 1967, little did I imagine that Islam would become center-stage in world news. As my sincere interest in the growth of Islam in America intensified, I began to discuss, dialogue, and then debate Muslim leaders throughout the world from an Arab Christian’s view of Islam. So far, I have had the privilege of participating in over 20 debates and discussions on every continent plus T.V. and radio. Islam Revealed was released in 1988 and is now in its 8th printing. The following is my analysis of Islamic invasion of America, the agenda of Islamists and visible methods to take over America by the year 2020! Will Americans continue to sleep through this invasion as they did when we were attacked on 9/11?
1. Terminate America’s freedom of speech by replacing it with hate crime bills state-wide and nation-wide.
2. Wage a war of words using black leaders like Louis Farrakhan, Rev. Jesse Jackson and other visible religious personalities to promote Islam as the original African-American’s religion while Christianity is for the whites! Strange enough, no one tells the African-Americans that it was the Arab Muslims who captured them and sold them as slaves, neither the fact that in Arabic the word for black and slave is the same, Abed.
3. Engage the American public in dialogues, discussions, debates in colleges, universities, public libraries, radio, TV, churches and mosques on the virtues of Islam. Proclaim how it is historically another religion like Judaism and Christianity with the same monotheistic faith.
4. Nominate Muslim sympathizers to political office for favorable legislation to Islam and support potential sympathizers by block voting.
5. Take control of as much of Hollywood, the press, TV, radio and the internet by buying the corporations or a controlling stock.
6. Yield to the fear of imminent shut-off of the lifeblood of America – the black gold. America’s economy depends on oil, (1000 products are derived from oil), so does its personal and industrial transportation and manufacturing -41% comes from the Middle East.
7. Yell, foul, out-of-context, personal interpretation, hate crime, Zionist, un- American, inaccurate interpretation of the Quran anytime Islam is criticized or the Quran is analyzed in the public arena.
8. Encourage Muslims to penetrate the White House, specifically with Islamists who can articulate a marvelous and peaceful picture of Islam. Acquire government positions, get membership in local school boards. Train Muslims as medical doctors to dominate the medical field, research and pharmaceutical companies. Take over the computer industry. Establish Middle Eastern restaurants throughout the U.S. to connect planners of Islamization in a discreet way. Ever notice how numerous Muslim doctors in America are, when their countries need them more desperately than America?
9. Accelerate Islamic demographic growth via:
a. Massive immigration (100,000 annually since 1961)
b. No birth control whatsoever – every baby of Muslim parents is automatically a Muslim and cannot choose another religion later.
c. Muslim men must marry American women and Islamize them (10,000 annually). Then divorce them and remarry every five years – since one cannot have the Muslim legal permission to marry four at one time. This is a legal solution in America.
d. Convert angry, alienated black inmates and turn them into militants (so far 2000 released inmates have joined Al Qaida world-wide). Only a few have been captured in Afghanistan and on American soil. So far – sleeping cells!
10. Reading, writing, arithmetic and research through the American educational system, mosques and student centers (now 1500) should be sprinkled with dislike of Jews, evangelical Christians and democracy. There are 300 exclusively Muslim schools with loyalty to the Quran, not the U.S. Constitution.
11. Provide very sizeable monetary Muslim grants to colleges and universities in America to establish Centers for Islamic studies with Muslim directors to promote Islam in higher education institutions.
12. Let the entire world know through propaganda, speeches, seminars, local and national media that terrorists have hijacked Islam, not the truth, which is Islam hijacked the terrorists. Furthermore in January of 2002, Saudi Arabia’s Embassy in Washington mailed 4500 packets of the Quran, videos, promoting Islam to America’s high schools--free. They would never allow us to reciprocate.
13. Appeal to the historically compassionate and sensitive Americans for sympathy and tolerance towards the Muslims in America who are portrayed as mainly immigrants from oppressed countries.
14. Nullify America’s sense of security by manipulating the intelligence community with misinformation. Periodically terrorize Americans of impending attacks on bridges, tunnels, water supplies, airports, apartment buildings and malls. (We have experienced this too often since 9-11.)
15. Form riots and demonstrations in the prison system demanding Islamic Sharia as the way of life, not American’s justice system.
16. Open numerous charities throughout the U.S. but use the funds to support Islamic terrorism with American dollars.
17. Raise interest in Islam on America’s campuses by insisting that freshman take at least one course on Islam. Be sure that the writer is a bonafide American, Christian, scholarly and able to cover up the violence in the Quran and express the peaceful, spiritual and religious aspect only.
18. Unify the numerous Muslim lobbies in Washington, mosques, Islamic student centers, educational organizations, magazines and papers by internet and an annual convention to coordinate plans, propagate the faith and engender news in the media of their visibility.
19. Send intimidating messages and messengers to the outspoken individuals who are critical of Islam and seek to eliminate them by hook or crook.
20. Applaud Muslims as loyal citizens of the US by spotlighting their voting record as the highest percentage of all minority and ethic groups in America.

THE widow of the latest soldier to be killed in Afghanistan has given birth to his son just hours after his funeral.
Lance Corporal Jared MacKinney, 28, was killed in late August, during an intense three-hour battle with Taliban insurgents in the western part of Afghanistan's Oruzgan province.
Prime Minister Julia Gillard, Opposition Leader Tony Abbott and defence chief Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston were among those gathered for the military funeral at Ashgrove Baptist Church in inner western Brisbane.
LCpl MacKinney's casket was carried, in heavy rain, from the church through an honour guard drawn from his unit, the 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (6RAR).
His widow Beckie among those paying tribute to him. Hours later, she was giving birth to his son. Noah Jared MacKinney was born at 3.10pm (AEST) today - two weeks early.
In a statement released before the service, Beckie Mackinney said Noah would learn all about her dad's life.
"The long journey without Jared has begun for Annabell and me, and soon also little Noah Jared, who is due to come into the world in a fortnight," she said. "Noah will never get to meet his father but he'll come to know him for the incredible man he was through our love and memories.
"We have reached the deepest depths of despair since we were told of Jared's death but we have also been helped and comforted by the support and extraordinary generosity of spirit of old friends, new friends and strangers who cared."
His father-in-law, senior police officer David Smallbone, paid tribute to a "wonderful, loving husband".
"We all remember Jared's great sense of humour and cheeky grin, but his entire face would smile at the thought of Beckie and his princess Annabell, as well as the impending arrival of his little man," Mr Smallbone told about 700 mourners as rain fell outside the Ashgrove Baptist Church.
Ms Mackinney also paid tribute to her husband's mates in Afghanistan and at home. "I want to thank you for your caring and incredible messages of support," she said. "I know Jared wants me to tell you that we are very proud of you and support you in the job that you are doing."
Commander of the 7th Brigade, Brigadier Paul McLachlan, also paid a heartfelt tribute to Lance Corporal MacKinney who "was never afraid to let his humanitarian side shine through".
"We have lost a remarkable soldier and an honourable Australian," Brigadier McLachlan said at the funeral service. "I reckon he could have run for mayor of Gallipoli Barracks (in Enoggera, Brisbane) and won in a canter."
At the conclusion of the service soldiers fired three blank volleys.

The works by Sydney artist Rodney Pople go on exhibition in Paddington next week with a warning on the gallery's door they "may offend".
Pople's exhibition, titled Bellini 21c, includes a work called Altarpiece in which the figures in the famous Bellini altarpiece in Venice are obscured by an image of a woman being penetrated from behind and having oral sex.
Another work features the altarpiece with a photograph of a woman exposing her genitals.
Pople photographed the altar piece last year, then used digital technology to add pornography taken from magazines found by his wife, curator Felicity Fenner.
He made large photo prints of the hybrid image, and added oil paint.

(Reuters) - Bibles in Afghan languages sent to a U.S. soldier at a base in Afghanistan were confiscated and destroyed to ensure that troops did not breach regulations which forbid proselytising, a military spokeswoman said.
The U.S. military has denied its soldiers tried to convert Afghans to Christianity, after Qatar-based Al Jazeera television showed soldiers at a bible class on a base with a stack of bibles translated into the local Pashto and Dari languages.
U.S. Central Command's General Order Number 1 forbids troops on active duty -- including all those based in Iraq and Afghanistan -- from trying to convert people to another religion.
"I can now confirm that the Bibles shown on Al Jazeera's clip were, in fact, collected by the chaplains and later destroyed. They were never distributed," spokeswoman Major Jennifer Willis said at Bagram air base, north of Kabul.
Military officials have said the bibles were sent through private mail to an evangelical Christian soldier by his church back home. The soldier brought them to the bible study class where they were filmed.
Trying to convert Muslims to another faith is a crime in Afghanistan. An Afghan man who converted to Christianity was sentenced to death for apostasy in 2006 but was allowed to leave the country after an international uproar.
"It certainly is, from the United States military's perspective, not our position to ever push any specific kind of religion, period," chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen told a Pentagon briefing on Monday.

DUTCH anti-Islam MP Geert Wilders, the country's most heavily guarded politician, has denounced an Australian Muslim cleric's reported call for his beheading for denigrating Islam.
"This is really terrible news and a very serious threat, unfortunately," the firebrand politician told AFP by email in response to the threat reported in the popular Dutch daily De Telegraaf.
Wilders, who campaigns for an end to Muslim immigration and a ban on the building of new mosques and the Koran in a bid to end the "Islamisation" of the Netherlands, has been under 24-hour protection since 2004.
According to De Telegraaf, Sydney-born Muslim cleric Feiz Mohammad called on extremists in an internet chatroom to "chop off his head" and accused Wilders of "denigrating" Islam.
An interview with Wilders recorded in June was aired by SBS TV in Australia on Sunday. He called Islamic culture retarded and violent.
Mohammad, as the head the Global Islamic Youth Centre in the Sydney southwest suburb of Liverpool in 2005, gained notoriety for a speech at the Bankstown Town Hall in March of that year in which he told the audience a rape victim has "no-one to blame but herself".
Women teased men and appealed to their "carnal nature" by the way they dressed in "nothing but satanic skirts", the imam told the crowd.

In 2007, he was named by national security sources as one of at least 10 hardliners who were preaching fundamentalist messages in Australia, propagating a Wahabi ideology espoused by al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.
In the same year, Mohammad, who was believed to be living in the Middle East, came to the attention of Australia's attorneys-general when his lectures were included in a box set of DVDs which urged young Muslims to kill non-believers.
The Dutch intelligence service, AIVD, which is understood to have a copy of his latest speech, said Mohammad is considered on a par with US Muslim preacher Anwar al-Awlaki, who is seen as the brains behind a failed attack on a plane flying over Detroit.
Wilders told De Telegraaf, which published a recording of the speech on its website, that he is shocked by the death threat.
The newspaper claims to have a sound recording of the appeal by Mohammad, who it said had links with terrorists and was influential for Western Muslims.
Wilders' Party for Freedom wants to restrict immigration from Islamic countries and considers Islam a violent ideology rather than a religion.
It is currently involved in protracted negotiations to support a minority centre-right government of free-market liberals and Christian Democrats.
Wilders said he would seek "clarification from the Dutch Minister of Interior/ Justice why the secret service and anti-terrorism unit NCTB have not informed me" of the reported threat, and "what the consequences will be for me".
"The information that has come to the fore will be included in the threat analysis for Mr Wilders," said NCTB spokeswoman Judith Sluiter, who added: "We had contact with Mr Wilders last night. We have permanent contact."
Dutch authorities would not confirm the threat or elaborate on possible steps to be taken.
Barred from entering Britain last year to stop him spreading "hatred", Wilders is known abroad for his 17-minute anti-Islam commentary, "Fitna", which was termed "offensively anti-Islamic" by United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.
His Party for Freedom came third in June 9 national elections, nearly tripling its number of parliamentary seats to 24.

DUTCH anti-Islam MP Geert Wilders, the country's most heavily guarded politician, has denounced an Australian Muslim cleric's reported call for his beheading for denigrating Islam. "This is really terrible news and a very serious threat, unfortunately," the firebrand politician told AFP by email in response to the threat reported in the popular Dutch daily De Telegraaf.
Wilders, who campaigns for an end to Muslim immigration and a ban on the building of new mosques and the Koran in a bid to end the "Islamisation" of the Netherlands, has been under 24-hour protection since 2004.
According to De Telegraaf, Sydney-born Muslim cleric Feiz Mohammad called on extremists in an internet chatroom to "chop off his head" and accused Wilders of "denigrating" Islam.
An interview with Wilders recorded in June was aired by SBS TV in Australia on Sunday. He called Islamic culture retarded and violent.
Mohammad, as the head the Global Islamic Youth Centre in the Sydney southwest suburb of Liverpool in 2005, gained notoriety for a speech at the Bankstown Town Hall in March of that year in which he told the audience a rape victim has "no-one to blame but herself".
Women teased men and appealed to their "carnal nature" by the way they dressed in "nothing but satanic skirts", the imam told the crowd.

In 2007, he was named by national security sources as one of at least 10 hardliners who were preaching fundamentalist messages in Australia, propagating a Wahabi ideology espoused by al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.
In the same year, Mohammad, who was believed to be living in the Middle East, came to the attention of Australia's attorneys-general when his lectures were included in a box set of DVDs which urged young Muslims to kill non-believers.
The Dutch intelligence service, AIVD, which is understood to have a copy of his latest speech, said Mohammad is considered on a par with US Muslim preacher Anwar al-Awlaki, who is seen as the brains behind a failed attack on a plane flying over Detroit.
Wilders told De Telegraaf, which published a recording of the speech on its website, that he is shocked by the death threat.
The newspaper claims to have a sound recording of the appeal by Mohammad, who it said had links with terrorists and was influential for Western Muslims.
Wilders' Party for Freedom wants to restrict immigration from Islamic countries and considers Islam a violent ideology rather than a religion.
It is currently involved in protracted negotiations to support a minority centre-right government of free-market liberals and Christian Democrats.
Wilders said he would seek "clarification from the Dutch Minister of Interior/ Justice why the secret service and anti-terrorism unit NCTB have not informed me" of the reported threat, and "what the consequences will be for me".
"The information that has come to the fore will be included in the threat analysis for Mr Wilders," said NCTB spokeswoman Judith Sluiter, who added: "We had contact with Mr Wilders last night. We have permanent contact."
Dutch authorities would not confirm the threat or elaborate on possible steps to be taken.
Barred from entering Britain last year to stop him spreading "hatred", Wilders is known abroad for his 17-minute anti-Islam commentary, "Fitna", which was termed "offensively anti-Islamic" by United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.
His Party for Freedom came third in June 9 national elections, nearly tripling its number of parliamentary seats to 24.

Mr Ahmadinejad said that direct peace talks, which Western-backed Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas relaunched with Israel in Washington on Thursday after a 20-month hiatus, were "doomed" to fail.
"What do they want to negotiate about? Who are they representing? What are they going to talk about?" the Iranian President asked of the Palestinian leadership.
"Who gave them the right to sell piece of Palestinian land? The people of Palestine and the people of the region will not allow them to sell even an inch of Palestinian soil to the enemy.The negotiations are stillborn and doomed."
Iran is implacably opposed to the new peace talks and has given strong support to the Islamist Hamas movement, which controls Gaza and which carried out two shooting attacks against Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank in the run-up to their relaunch that killed four and wounded two.

We are using this act to warn about the teaching and ideology of Islam, which we do hate as it is hateful. We do not hate any people, however. We love, as God loves, all the people in the world and we want them to come to a knowledge of the truth. To warn of danger and harm is a loving act. God is love and truth. If you know the truth it can set you free.
