"Police would like to speak with a man, described as between 20 and 25 years old and of middle eastern or Mediterranean appearance."
The 27-year-old man was found on the driveway of a home in Mona St about 6.15pm Monday.
He was taken to hospital and is now in a stable condition.
The scene became a site of sadness and worry for friends, relatives and neighbours as a man tried to run under the police cordon, but was stopped by officers.
He shouted, "That's my house" as he backed away.
A woman, possibly a relative of the victim, was seen breaking down outside the police cordon.
Karl Fayad, who lives in the same street, said he heard the incident.
"I heard two shots, and not five minutes later the cops just turned up," he said.
"It's terrible. It's not nice at all."
A woman at the scene, who did not wish to be name, bemoaned the violence.
"It is scary for people, kids, families," she said.

THE man who allegedly attacked another man with an axe in Lurnea on Saturday will face court this week after being refused bail yesterday.
Ali Khater, 44, is alleged to have stopped a red Toyota Celica at the intersection of Hoxton Park and Webster roads about 1.30pm before leaving the car and attacking a pedestrian with an axe.
He is then believed to have returned to the car and fled.
Victim Jason Potter, 35, was taken to Liverpool Hospital with serious head and leg injuries.
Officers arrested Mr Khater at his Smiths Ave home in Cabramatta about 1.45pm that day and charged him with wound with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
He was refused bail yesterday and will face Parramtta Court this week.
Liverpool Police crime manager Detective Inspector Dean Johnstone said the men were known to one another and had been involved in an ongoing dispute prior to the attack.
