Australia's Labor Socialists build a Hospital

Rooms too small at $1bn Royal North Shore Hospital - doctors

By Simon Benson
The Daily Telegraph
March 11, 2009 08:29am

A $1 BILLION hospital project is in a shambles with the discovery that its operating theatres are too small for major operations and don't meet the national standards for minimum size.
The Daily Telegraph can reveal that, of 18 theatres at Sydney's Royal North Shore Hospital 16 are below the recommended size for major surgery.

In a deepening of the crisis facing the decrepit New South Wales health system, surgeons and anaesthetists at the existing hospital, which serves a population of one million, claim that at least six theatres are so small they won't even be able to accommodate vital operating equipment.

Clinicians said they will not be able to perform major trauma, cardiac, spinal or cancer surgery in 90 per cent of the theatres as they are at least 10sq m too small.

In a repeat of the disaster at Bathurst Hospital, plans shown to the surgeons reveal that 10 of the theatres will be 52sq m and six will be 42sq m. The accepted minimum size for multi-function theatres is between 55 and 60sq m, they said.

It has also been revealed that urgent maternity patients will be located hundreds of metres away from theatres and that trauma victims transferred from the helipad to surgery would have to be pushed 259m on trolleys.

Head of Royal North Shore's trauma unit and chair of the medical staff council Tony Joseph said the situation was "ridiculous" and warned that the project was doomed to failure unless the plans were immediately redrawn.

"The surgeons have repeatedly expressed their deep concerns about the size of the theatres," Dr Joseph said. "They have said they will not be able to conduct complicated or major surgery in them."

The clinicians, who had been locked out of the design plans by the Government, have advised hospital CEO Matthew Daly of the problems.

Mr Daly is believed to have sought urgent talks with Health Department officials.

The Opposition has described the project as a "monumental blunder".

"It is either sheer stupidity or breathtaking incompetence for the Rees Government to be spending $1 billion to build a hospital where 16 out of 18 operating theatres are smaller than . . . guidelines recommend, with some so small they can't fit vital medical equipment," Opposition health spokeswoman Jillian Skinner said.

"I sympathise with doctors who are screaming in frustration trying to get the State Labor Government to realise they are building a hospital that won't be able to perform the world-class surgery that is expected of it.

"The decision to locate the helipad on top of the existing Douglas Building is utter madness. It will not only jeopardise the lives of patients, it will make NSW the laughing stock of the nation when it comes to major infrastructure projects."

Australia's Doctors, Nurses and Clinicians are sought out all over the world for their skill and dedication to their profession and patients.
Since the introduction of Medi Bank now called Medi Care, thirty years of socialized medicine has seen these highly skilled and dedicated professional driven into the ground mentally and physically by the crushing weight of the Socialist
bureaucracy.
The largest increase in MediCare expenditure is in the spending on and increasing the size of the
bureaucracy. the back room boys and gals, union officials and hangers on, that make up the socialist Comrades all aboard gravy train, of that most infamous oxymoron the "public service"

This debacle is the Labor Party's latest three legged, four arsed 3 dicked 18 balled Donkey that they are trying to pass off as socialist medicine's prize state of the art
thoroughbred racehorse.

The bio of one of Labor's movers and shakers and expert on operating theater and hospital design, NSW Health Minister John Della Bosca, below. See this link for his and his wife's most infamous contribution to public service.
Socialised medicine in Australia.

Minister for Health, Minister for the Central Coast and Vice President of the Executive Council
NSWALP

John Della Bosca joined the Australian Labor Party at the age of 17, inspired by the national leadership of Gough Whitlam.
Politically active from a young age John rose through his branch and electorate council to hold a place on the National Executive of the Australian Labor Party.

John has dedicated his life to the Labour-movement and creating a modern Australia. He worked as a researcher for the then Senator Kerry Sibraa, before becoming the
National Research Officer for the Australian Transport Officers’ Federation. John went on to become the union’s State Organiser in 1981.

Two years later John became the
State Organiser of the NSW Branch of the Australian Labor Party, then Assistant Secretary in 1985. In 1990 John became the General Secretary of the NSW Branch. For nine years John worked to ensure the working families of NSW were represented by Labor men and women at all levels of government.

John was elected to the NSW Legislative Council in 1999. He has served in a number of Ministerial capacities, including Special Minister of State, Industrial Relations, Ageing and Disability, Commerce, Education and Training.
He is now Minister for Health, Minister for the Central Coast and Leader of the Government in the Legislative Council.

Among his achievements as a Minister are an additional billion dollars in funding for disability services; a new evidence based approach to drug policy; lifetime care for people catastrophically injured in motor vehicle accidents (regardless of fault); and changes to the WorkCover scheme which increased benefits, dramatically lowered premiums and eliminated a $3.2 billion deficit.

John has raised his family on the Central Coast of NSW and is a passionate advocate of the region.

And Westmead Hospital, a Hospital Labor would describe as the "working families" Hospital, has simply run out of money

Australia: Medicare the best third world health system in the world bar none.

Tammy Hams - lying in agony on hospital floor

By Richard Noone
The Daily Telegraph
January 30, 2009 12:00am

TAMMY Hams thought she was "going to die" when she was offered a blanket and told to lie on a waiting room floor because staff at her local hospital could not find her a bed.

Ms Hams was booked in for surgery at Wyong Hospital to remove possible cancerous lesions when doctors discovered a huge abscess causing "agonising pain".

The 29-year-old said she spent 3½ hours writhing in agony on the waiting room floor of the hospital's surgical ward on Wednesday before she was eventually given a bed.

Staff at the hospital "categorically deny" her claims.

Rees quiet on Rudd hospital bailout

The incident comes amid yet another hospital outrage, in which a 24-year-old man was discharged from Griffith Hospital early on Monday after complaining of sinus pain.

The following day he again presented to the hospital and was flown immediately to Sydney's St Vincent's where he died from unknown causes.

Tell us your hospital horror stories below

Greater Southern Health has launched an investigation into why he was discharged.

And in Dubbo, doctors are threatening to quit because they routinely run out of basic medications.

Ms Hams said her GP had been trying to get her into hospital since Friday when she began feeling stabbing pains in her stomach.

A biopsy four months ago revealed pre-cancerous lesions on her cervix, which if left would turn cancerous.

"I thought I was going to die," Ms Hams told The Daily Telegraph yesterday from her hospital bed.

"I have never been in that much pain in my life - it was agony."

She was booked-in for a hysterectomy and told to arrive at 9am.

Her mother Jenny Leatham said she was "crying and doubled-over in pain" and could not sit on the waiting room chairs or stand, so they pleaded for a bed.

"They gave her a blanket and said the best she could do was lie on the floor," Mr Leatham said.

"The staff were so nice and you could see they were upset about what was happening. This is just unfair, I'm not rubbishing the staff. There just wasn't enough beds.

"The system has to change."

A North Sydney Central Coast Health spokeswoman said an investigation found there was no shortage of beds and Ms Hams was "treated in a caring and timely manner".

"It is unacceptable for a patient to be expected to lie on the floor and staff on duty when Ms Hams arrived at the hospital deny making any such recommendation," the spokeswoman said.

The hospital argues she was assessed by an anaesthetist at 10.10am and that she asked for the blanket.

Mrs Leatham said by 12.30pm staff found her daughter a bed and she was operated on at 2pm.

When surgeons cut her open they discovered a huge abscess pushing on her cervix.

Unable to perform the hysterectomy they removed as much of the infection as they could and inserted a tube to drain it over the next seven to 10 days.

"If the abscess had burst while she was in the waiting room she would have died," Mrs Leatham said.

Wyong Hospital is just one of the state's many hospitals plagued with debt, bed shortages and a lack of specialist doctors.

Last week its emergency department - one of the busiest in the state - lost all but one of its specialist doctors to Gosford Hospital so it could retain its status as a teaching hospital.

Senior doctors at Dubbo Base Hospital threatened to walk off the job after they ran out of morphine because the hospital could not afford to pay pharmaceutical companies.

Patients in intensive care also sweltered for days in record temperatures because contractors could not be paid to fix the air conditioning.

The Greater Western Area Health Service reportedly owes more than $23 million to suppliers. Many are no longer prepared to provide food or medical equipment.

The situation across the state is expected to get far worse before it gets any better.

A report by auditing firm PriceWaterhouseCoopers last month revealed the state's health budget would blow out by as much as $900 million by March if dramatic changes were not made

Before the Australian Labor Party introduced their socialised medicine aka Medicare the Australian health system was THE BEST health system in the world bar NONE.
Now we have the best THIRD WORLD health DONT CARE SYSTEM IN THE WORLD BAR none.
AMERICA beware the Obama universal health care threat, look to Australia to see what happens when you SOCIALISE your health care.
The NSW Labor Government wont spend a dollar on the Manly Hospital simply because the land is worth millions of dollars and they have a parade of big business big Labor donors ready and waiting to get their hands on the land to develop into an exclusive residential development with million dollar views of Sydney Harbour, hey the minister himself said that Manly Hospital is a coastal Hospital, and does not need air conditioning as much as Hospitals in the Labor Party's electorates.
Mona Vale Hospital is the next on the list of the institutions that have to be dismantled on the basis of who benefits from them in Mona Vale Hospitals case it is a predominately anti Labor electorate, with a Hospital sitting on a billion dollar site that the Socialists simply cannot tolerate, they see the site as a place where they could build a holiday resort for Labor faithful and those wanting to be educated in correct thinking.

Australia's Socialised Medicine aka Medi DONT care, Rudd & Co. seek to remove Doctors from treating patients.

Pain, no gain in Roxon’s secret plan

Piers Akerman

THE plan to nationalise Australia’s medical health continues apace despite efforts by Health Minister Nicola Roxon to keep her sinister scheme under the radar.

The Australian Self-Medication Industry yesterday released a survey which found as many as one in seven visits to the doctor were at least partially taken up by discussion of minor ailments, coughs and aches that might not require medical attention.

The finding has been used to claim millions are being wasted by unnecessary consultations with doctors and to support Roxon’s ideologically-based drive to give nurses and other health workers more work.

What the survey does not illustrate is the reality that the majority of people who make time to see their GP do so because they are very concerned about some aspect of their health.

While it may be that 70 per cent of the conditions which they take to their doctor are not serious, it is a safe bet 100 per cent of the patients are anxious about them and want them resolved.

Under the Roxon plan, patients would see doctors as a last resort, after they had passed through the hands of nurses or other health workers. As far as Labor’s ideological warriors go, doctors are fair game and need to be brought to heel, made to answer to the big bureaucracies.

The problem with this neanderthal thinking is that the model hasn’t worked wherever it has been tried. Just ask those who have suffered under the British national health system which the Rudd Government is trying to cut-and-paste into Australian law.

While doctors may be concerned about loss of independence, their immediate worry is for their patients and the possibility patients will be at a far greater risk of misdiagnosis when they are being assessed by the barefoot medicos Labor wants to empower.

If, for instance, you have a freckle that is causing some anxiety with all the warnings about melanoma, do you want to be assessed by a doctor or a nurse?

It may well be that the freckle causing stress is not life-threatening, and you can walk out reassured, but most would agree that reassurance from a doctor is more like to relieve the stress than that offered by a person with less training.

The Government is planning to bring about its changes through the states and commonwealth COAG process. The compliant Queensland university system is already offering some of the alternate courses designed to strip the medical profession of its autonomy.

In August Professor Richard Murray, the Dean of Medicine at James Cook University, offered the following definition of one of the new breed of barefoot doctors his faculty will graduate: “It is about preparing people from a variety of backgrounds to be able to assume a flexible sort of medical extension role, working with the doctor and with evolving skills on the basis of a sort of general qualification.”

As Mark McCardle, deputy Leader of the Queensland Opposition and shadow health minister told Parliament when Queensland’s Labor Government pushed through the first of the Bills facilitating Roxon’s attack, Australians will be subject to an unaccountable political institution that will control not only what health practitioners are taught but also how they treat and help sick people, while following orders from politicians and bureaucrats.

“The experience of this Government’s creation and management of the state’s worsening public hospital crisis clearly demonstrates the future health care of my fellow Queenslanders is best left to real doctors and nurses - not political spin doctors and ministerial nursemaids,” he said.

“The future health quality standards of health practitioners should not be gambled on legislative good faith in an unaccountable political/bureaucratic institution. The Bill before this House is a sugar-coated toxic blend of important reform for a national health practitioner registration scheme with an accreditation and training proposal that threatens Australia’s position as having one of the best and most comprehensive professional standards training and practice for our medical practitioners.”

Writing in Australian Doctor, Dr Annette Katelaris pointed out the obvious - to remain at the centre of of a patient’s primary care, a doctor needs to know their patient.

“If we only see a patient when they’re acutely unwell, we have little chance to build a relationship or fully understand their medical history,” she said.

“All jobs have their menial tasks but they remain as part of the job description because they are necessary in order to perform the more difficult tasks. It has been during routine consultations that I have had women disclose the sexual abuse they endured as children.

“This coloured all further care and counsel I offered, yet it was only during this so-called menial task they felt able to talk about what happened to them.”

Roxon has acknowledged that doctors are weighed down by unnecessary administration, and doctors have urged her to lighten their administrative load, not their clinical duties. The prescription is simple. The health system need less bureaucracy, not more, if it is to deliver the service Australians deserve.

The architects of the finest third world health system on earth, Medicare (don't care much) the Australian Labor party are rarely found using the health system they created in the Whitlam governments infamous attack on Australian society and values during their short term of office 1972 -1975 they unleashed the socialist beast called Medibank, now known as Medicare.
It was was designed to eliminate private health treatment and private health insurance.
Thankfully Whitlam and his gang were thrown out of office on November 11 1975 by the Governor General, Australians endorsed this action by electing by the biggest margin in Australian electoral history the conservative Fraser government and did so again for another two terms.

Whitlam has not enjoyed good health these past twenty years and most recently has been treated in Sydney's St Vincents Private Hospital, a Catholic Private Hospital, a center of medical excellence, he is certainly not the only member of the Australian (Socialist)Labor Party to reject the health system they created and insist is all the Australian people need and he wont be the last.

I believe that Whitlam is over ninety, I am surprised he and his fellow comrades are able to justify using all those medical resources on someone his age when ordinary Australians or "working families" in similar situations with elderly family members are lectured on the virtues of euthanasia and pulling the pin on people with similar ailments as Whitlam suffers from, like the Islamic sociopaths who preach the virtues of suicide bombing isn't it time these know all millionaire Champagne Socialist Nazis lead by example and start walking the walk of their ideology of the equal distribution of misery, hate and social division for all but themselves ?
