Islamic Socioipath's Inc., Pious Mehanna Family Rampage through Downing Centre Court Muslim Savage screams from Dock "I'm going to f---ing kill you."

Dozens of police in brawl at Downing Centre court

Dozens of police officers have been involved in a brawl inside a Sydney court with a family on trial for brawling with police.

One officer was "smacked in the face" during the fight, witness and 2UE court reporter Leonie Ryan said.

A number of police cars circled the Downing Centre at lunchtime on Tuesday.

The fight broke out minutes after Adel, Hussain and Ali Mehanna were convicted of numerous offences, including affray, resisting arrest and

assaulting police during a fight that broke out outside their Bankstown home on January 1, 2013.

Five Mehanna family members were facing police assault charges after the brawl.

Ali Mehanna, who was allegedly involved in Tuesday's scrum on level four, kept screaming: "This is police brutality."

Ryan said Adel Mehanna was inside the dock of the courtroom when he started screaming: "I'm going to f---ing kill you."

Officers then stormed in as Corrective Services attempted to take him away.

"We walked out of court, we were standing outside the doors and all of a sudden we just hear screaming. We turned around and it was almost like a football match brawl," she said.

"There were punches being thrown everywhere. It was just fists flying everywhere and screaming."

She said one police officer was punched in the face before a man was tackled to the ground and handcuffed.

Ali Mehanna told reporters outside the court that his brother, who was arrested over the brawl, was the victim of an "unprovoked attack".

"They provoked my brother as he walked out, they found a reason and then 'bang' they jumped on him," Ali Mehanna said.

"There was officers outside of the courtroom, there was no need for officers to be outside of the courtroom and then as we were leaving there was six or seven of them."

Family supporter Hassan Anthony kept repeating the words "police brutality".

"They hit him [a family] to the face, they kneed him in the back," Mr Anthony said.

"There was no mercy, all because they [police officers] are wearing the colour blue," he said.

The case continues.

Police used "excessive force" in dealing with a dispute involving members of a western Sydney family accused of assaulting officers, a court has been told.

Members of the Mehanna family have been charged with assaulting police, resisting police and affray after police responded to reports of a domestic incident at their home in Bankstown, in Sydney's west, at 12.30am (AEDT) on Wednesday.
Police allege members of the family assaulted officers after they were called to the scene.

As police were in the driveway preparing to leave, a family member allegedly punched a probationary constable, giving him a black eye, police said on Wednesday.
The remaining family members allegedly joined the assault on the officer before other officers came to his aid.
On Thursday, five members of the family were granted bail after appearing via an audio-visual link from the cells at Penrith police station.
As part of their bail conditions, Mohammed Mehanna and his 18-year-old triplets Ali and Zainab Mehanna and Hussain Mehanni are required to report twice a week to Bankstown police station and must live at their Bankstown address.

Another sibling, 21-year old Adele Mehanna, who is charged with affray and resisting police, was also granted bail in a separate hearing.
Appearing for Adele Mehanna, defence lawyer Greg Heathcote told the court there were "two sides to the story" and police had reacted "excessively" in dealing with the matter.
"This is a very emotive matter," he told the court.
"The case of the defence in all matters is excessive force by police.
"In trying to prevent assault on members of his family, as a result, (Adele Mehanna) was arrested.

Prosecutors opposed bail on the grounds that Adele Mehanna had prior police assault charges and five breach of bail conditions.

Appearing agitated, Mehanna interjected as the prosecution put forward its case.
"You are going to make things worse.
"It was a family argument between two girls and police pepper-sprayed my f***ing family.
That's my whole f***ing family."

Relatives of the family in court appeared visibly upset, crying as Magistrate John McIntosh asked Mehanna to stop interrupting proceedings.
Mr McIntosh imposed strict bail conditions, including requiring Mehanna to report to Bankstown police daily and imposing a curfew between 10pm and 5am (AEDT).
Mehanna and his four other family members are due to appear at Bankstown local court on January 24.
His 41-year-old mother, who has also been charged, is due to appear Bankstown Local Court on February 13.

A GROUP of five people were violently attacked on the street in Sydney's east early this morning in what witnesses have called a racially motivated attack.

Police said the group of four men, aged 66, 48, 39 and 27 and a 62-year-old woman were walking along Blair Street when they passed a group of eight males about 12.30am.

Smiles The Best Cure

The Sunday Telegraph

Refugee screening finds many kids at risk

The revelation comes after a joint Sydney Children’s Hospital volunteer refugee health screening program of two Sydney English language centres found more than 90 per cent of children require medical intervention.

The high incidence of illness has triggered a call from health workers to expand the award-winning screening program more widely across the state.
Of the 169 children who were screened, more than 90 per cent had “one or more health conditions”.

Health workers found 75 per cent had nutritional or vitamin deficiencies, 30 per cent had vision or hearing problems, 28 per cent were not fully immunised while 25 per cent had an infectious disease.

The Sunday Telegraph can reveal NSW Health Minister Jillian Skinner (pictured) will examine expanding the program across the state, after it received a health innovation award last week.

The program’s clinical lead community pediatrician, Associate Professor Dr Karen Zwi, said families arriving into Australia under its immigration program were only screened for tuberculosis.

Once in the country, refugees are given a Medicare card and encouraged to visit a local GP to be screened and treated for any other ailments.
However, Dr Zwi said not all families take up the advice.

Dr Zwi said the majority of children, most of them aged between 11 and 17, had never been immunised, having come from countries in South East, Africa and the Middle East. Once diagnosed, many of the children responded well to treatment, she said. Dr Zwi said health workers were keen to see the screening program rolled out to other language centres to ensure all children were diagnosed and treated.

“Other than tuberculosis, there is no mandatory routine screening of arrivals,” she said.
“The main point is that everything can be managed and treated if we know about it, but if it is left undiagnosed, it can potentially cause a bigger problem later. You do pick up quite serious things sometimes, but nothing that could not be treated.”

Blood screenings taken over two years of the children at the two language centres found four children to have malaria, nine to be suffering from chronic hepatitis B and 72 to have a vitamin D deficiency.

Muslim Gang Rapist Mohammed Sanoussi parole stalled over Brothers 4 Life gang links

Skaf gang rape member's bid for freedom stalled over possible criminal gang association
Staff Writers

The Daily Telegraph
August 22 2013.

A SKAF gang rapist's fourth bid for freedom has stalled after a hearing before the NSW State Parole Authority was told he had possibly been associating with members of a criminal gang.

Mohammed Sanoussi has already served 13 years of a 16-year sentence for his role in the August 2000 gang rapes of young girls.

The attacks, involving 14 men, happened at various locations in Sydney.

Sanoussi, who became eligible for parole in 2010, made his fourth application today, but it was adjourned after information was presented to the board that he had been seen meeting with members of the Brothers 4 Life gang.

GANG: Sydney gangs flash diamonds and guns in new wave of violence

A police report delivered to Corrective Services late on Tuesday alleges that members of the notorious Brothers 4 Life street gang have been meeting at the Sanoussi family home.

It was at this southwest Sydney property that Sanoussi had been staying while on weekend leave from jail in recent months, and where he was expected to reside if released on parole.

Counsel for the corrective services commissioner Geoff Denman told the parole hearing at Parramatta Justice Precinct on Thursday that releasing Sanoussi into the family home posed an "unacceptable danger".

"Mr Sanoussi has a background of being prone to the pressure of his peers, including his brothers," he said.

"If the information in the police report is correct, then that raises great concerns about whether he might be falling into that company again."

The hearing was adjourned until September 5.

Western Australian Govt: A bill to require Muslim women to remove a burqa or niqab to prove their identity to West Australian police has been introduced to the state's parliament.

Law requiring Muslim women to remove burqa to prove their identity to police introduced to WA Parliament

PerthNow
August 8 2013

A NEW law that would require Muslim women to remove a burqa or niqab to prove their identity to West Australian police has been introduced to the state's parliament.

The legislation was drafted in specific response to public outcry about the case of burqa-wearing mother-of-seven Carnita Matthews, who had a conviction of knowingly making a false statement quashed.

Ms Matthews was originally given a six-month jail sentence after being found guilty of falsely accusing a senior constable of forcibly trying to remove her burqa when she was pulled over while driving in Woodbine in Sydney's southwest in June 2010.

PICTURES: Carnita Matthews in court

She was later acquitted on appeal after the prosecution could not prove she was the woman who signed the statement while wearing the garment.

As part of WA's Criminal Investigation (Identifying People) Amendment Bill, the law will require ``a person to remove headwear or do other things to facilitate the officer being able to confirm a person's identity''.

Officers will also get explicit powers to detain a person while they comply.

It will apply to an item of clothing, hat, helmet, mask, sunglasses or ``any other thing worn by a person that totally or partially covers the person's head''.

The WA parliament will be told the law was in direct response to the NSW case.

``Having regard to that case, the government has taken action to ensure that similar injustices do not occur in Western Australia,'' Attorney-General Michael Mischin said.

``The amendments provide a explicit power ... where the subject person refuses to remove an obstruction that is preventing the officer from being able to identify the person's face.''

NSW Counter Terrorism Squad says proceeds of crime in Australia are used to fund terrorism groups overseas

Mark Morri Crime Editor
The Daily Telegraph
August 12 2013

YOUNG Islamic extremists are committing crimes in Sydney to send money overseas to terrorist groups or to pay for their own trips to countries where they come in contact with extremists groups.

The head of the NSW Counter Terrorism Squad, Assistant Commissioner Peter Dein, said some of the proceeds of crimes had been funnelled into overseas terrorist organisations.

"It is well documented that in the past there has been a link between criminal activity and funding of terrorism," he said.

Assistant Commissioner Dein said he could not comment on individual cases but he conceded funds were, in some cases, finding "their way into the wrong hands".

The most pressing concern for the Counter Terrorism Squad and national intelligence services is young Australians being recruited and involved in terrorist camps overseas, especially in Syria, where it has been estimated more than 100 Australian dual nationals are suspected of fighting with the al-Nusra Front, al-Qaeda's affiliate in Syria.

"We know there are people going overseas and getting involved with insurgents," Assistant Commissioner Dein said. "How do they get there, who pays for their airfares, for spending money? Also what are they doing there, who are they associated with and what are they bringing back or doing when they get back?"

He said the squad was investigating these cases, following the money trails and examining any links with organisations or individuals in Sydney or the rest of Australia.

He said there was "not a lot of proven cases" but "what is of concern is the unknown".

He would not comment on individual cases as investigations were ongoing. However, a known extreme radical was involved in a theft and was caught on listening devices saying he wanted his portion of the robbery to go to the "cause".

In another case, debt collector and businessman Vasko Boskovski _ who was gunned down outside his home in Earlwood _ was a co-director in a company with convicted Punchbowl terrorist Khaled Sharrouf, who was jailed in 2005 for plotting to blow up the Lucas Heights nuclear reactor.

Assistant Commissioner Dein stressed the vast majority of money transfers going overseas were for valid reasons.

"But some of those funds do find their way into the wrong hands," he said.

But he said it was virtually impossible to estimate what percentage of the money was not for legitimate means.

Detectives have interviewed some of those who have returned from Syria and information is still being assessed.

"But it is only a small number because many have not returned," he said. "Obviously there are people we are concerned about and we keep a watch but it the unknown that is the biggest worry."

He said one of the biggest sources of information came from the Muslim community.

"They are vital to helping us keep abreast of what is happening in the community."

Counter Terrorism and Special Tactics command has just under 600 people at its disposal, including bomb response, rescue and negotiators.

A glimpse inside the past of Sydney's bikie war victims

Janet Fife - Yeomans
The Daily Telegraph
August 12 2013

AT least 11 had done time behind bars, four were on bail, most were bikies and all of them were known to police.

The victims of the city's deadly gun wars were figures used to looking over their shoulders: one had been inside over a double murder, another two had been suspects in homicides and one had caused a death by dangerous driving in a car chase reaching 150km/h.

But they left behind grieving wives, girlfriends and families, children who will grow up without a father.

Matthew Hedges, 25, who was shot through a window at his Chester Hill home on December 31 last year not long after his release from jail was a father of four.

CRIME: Sydney gangs flash diamonds and guns in new wave of violence

Two of his children, aged two and four, were in the house when he was murdered.

"It makes absolutely no difference to a police investigation what the background or the involvement of any victim is," Detective Chief Superintendent Mal Lanyon, head of the organised crime directorate, said yesterday. "No family should have to go through what the family of anyone murdered has to go through."

With legal gun ownership in Australia back at pre-Port Arthur massacre levels, police believe they are making headway against illegal firearms. In the 2012-2013 financial year, police seized 9506 illegal firearms, 729 of them handguns, the type of guns commonly used in the slayings.

Supt Lanyon is also head of Operation Apollo, targeting gun crime, and said police still faced a wall of silence as they investigated the underworld slayings. "We don't receive a lot of information or support from the type of witnesses we would hope to get information from," he said.

BIKIE WAR: Man shot in neck in Sydney's south

While there have been a number of arrests over the slayings, he appealed for the families of these men to speak up about what they know.

"That is why we also work so hard to take illegal firearms off the street because while there are illegal firearms in the community there is the potential for those who wish to engage in conflict to settle that conflict with those firearms," Supt Lanyon said.

The gun wars have claimed 18 men since the O'Farrell government took office, in shootings mostly blamed on drugs and revenge.

Some were linked to an escalating turf war between the Hells Angels and Comanchero bikie gangs, others were members of the Brothers For Life street gang, founded by Australia's highest-security prisoner and murderer Basam Hamzy.

Lone Wolf bikie Neal Todorovski, 37, shot through the back during a row outside his Sans Souci unit on January 4 last year, was farewelled in a $42,000 gold-plated coffin paid for in cash by his bikie mates.

SHOOTING: Bikie slain as two die in Sydney gun mayhem

Former Comanchero Darko Janceski, 32, who had left the gang on bad terms a year before his death in April last year, had been linked by police to the investigation of two suspected murders. His crimes included dangerous driving causing death and malicious wounding of a man who lost an ear.

His house had been burnt down and for months before he was shot dead in Berkeley, Janceski had been in fear for his life. He was on bail for possessing drugs and stealing cars from his employer.

Gemahl Maika, 38, a father of two, was due to give evidence in a trial involving a multi-million-dollar cocaine syndicate when he was gunned down in April 2011.

Detectives found a bundle of $50 notes the size of a house brick and other cash totalling more than $31,000 in the car of Hussein Khanafer, 31, not long before he was shot dead in February at Blackett.

Police believe a single Middle Eastern crime syndicate is behind five killings: that of Roy Yaghi, 33, a drugs cook for the Hells Angels; Jamie Grover, 27; Comanchero bikie Faalau Pisu, 23, at a wedding; Ali Eid, 38, and his relative Bachir Arja, 28.

Genital mutilation case lawyer charged with two counts of perverting the course of justice

A LAWYER involved in an alleged female genital mutilation case will face court today charged with two counts of perverting the course of justice.

Detectives from the Sex Crimes Squad and attached to Strike Force Longfield arrested the solicitor at his office in Sydney's inner west.

The strike force was set up to investigation claims two young girls had the procedure, also known as female circumcision, performed on them when they were aged six and seven.

Eight people remain before the court after being arrested by detectives last year. Findings are yet to be handed down in those cases

The lawyer has been charged with two counts of do act with intent to pervert the course of justice. He was granted conditional bail and will appear at Parramatta Local Court next week.

The barbarity of being kept in the dark ages

Mark Morri
The Daily Telegraph
September 14, 2012 12:00AM

A SYDNEY sheik accused of involvement in the barbaric "genital circumcision" of sisters aged 6 and 7 is alleged to have told his Muslim community to lie about its widespread practice.

Police claim Sheik Shabbir Mohammedbhai Vaziri told members of the Dawoodi Bohra community at Auburn to lie to police when they questioned them over the mutilations.

Vaziri, 56, of Auburn, Helen Magennis, 68, a retired nurse of Campbelltown, and the children's parents have all been charged in relation to the alleged acts on the girls.

Police allege the procedures were carried out by Magennis.

A strike force of seven detectives from the NSW sex crimes unit was set up after an anonymous tip to the Department of Community Services several months ago.

It is the first time anyone has been charged with the offence in relation to children after legislation was passed in 1994.

Protect girls from cruel culture
FEW in Australia realise that female genital mutilation or FGM is an issue both here and in other modern multicultural nations.
Genital mutilation may not be isolated
A MAN has appeared in a Sydney court charged over the genital mutilation of two girls aged six and seven.

Family and Community Services Minister Pru Goward said she did not believe genital mutilation was rare in NSW.

Ms Goward said that female genital mutilation was an "abhorrent practice" and "a form of child abuse".

The two children are still in the care of their parents.

"They are good parents," NSW sex crimes unit head Detective Superintendent John Kerlatic said.

"It may seem a contradiction to say that when the parents are facing such serious charges. But they are not in any danger of any physical abuse."

The alleged genital mutilations occurred in the past 18 months at homes in Sydney.

Vaziri appeared in Burwood court yesterday on two counts of being an accessory after the fact to female genital mutilation, and hindering the police investigation.

Police allege Vaziri hindered the investigation by telling people to lie about the extent of female genital mutilation.

Magistrate Chris Longley said despite what many people would see as very serious charges, he was granting bail under strict conditions.

He said police opposed bail saying Vaziri was a flight risk.

Mr Longley ordered Vaziri surrender his passport and report to Auburn police daily and appear in Parramatta Local Court on September 26.

The parents were charged last Friday, granted bail and ordered to reappear in court on September 26.

Magennis is alleged to have carried out the procedure and was granted bail to reappear on October 3.

Home front opens in a foreign war

It was not so much a death threat as a declaration of war.

''You wanna go to war, you f---in' Shia dogs?'' the phone message says. ''We're taking all of you to war, in Sydney and overseas!''

It was 8pm and Jamal Daoud, an aspiring politician from Auburn was having dinner with his wife and children. An outspoken critic of the Free Syrian Army, Daoud is accustomed to abuse but this call was more frightening than most.

''You wanna kill our brothers and sisters overseas, we're gonna kill you motherf---ers here,'' the caller says.

''We know where [you] live. We're coming past [your] house and shoot at [it], if there are people inside we don't give a f---. You wanna spill blood, we're gonna spill blood, you f---in' dogs!''

After two years and an estimated 100,000 deaths, the civil war in Syria has spilled on to the streets of Sydney. Auburn, Lakemba and Bankstown are the new battle lines.

The Syrian conflict, which pits the Sunni-dominated rebellion against the Alawite regime of President Bashar al-Assad, has split the Middle East in two; the Sunni regimes of Saudi Arabia and Qatar and large Sunni population in Lebanon on one side, Iran, the Lebanese militia Hezbollah and the broader Shiite Muslim population, of which the Alawites are an offshoot, on the other.

In Sydney, it is splitting suburbs along the same sectarian lines.

''It's very frightening, what is happening,'' says Daoud, who was targeted after posting a disparaging message about the death of Mustapha al-Majzoub, a Sydney sheikh killed in Syria last year, while conducting humanitarian work his supporters say.

Daoud and others described him as a ''terrorist'' fighting on the frontline but local Sunnis insist he was a ''shaheed'', or martyr.

Majzoub was one of about 200 Australians to travel to the war zone in the past two years. The Australian Federal Police believe a significant proportion of these mostly Lebanese dual citizens are fighting with the Syrian resistance, about half of whom are in al-Qaeda aligned Al-Nusra Front, which was put on a Federal Police terrorist blacklist in March and censured again yesterday by Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus.

Several organisations at home — including the al-Risalah Islamic Bookstore in Bankstown, where Majzoub spoke regularly — have been fund-raising and loudly decrying the brutal acts being committed on their fellow Muslims.

''Our families in Syria are in desperate need,'' reads one message on the Facebook page of the ultra-conservative Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama'ah Association, which runs several mosques including the controversial Bukhari House bookstore and prayer hall in Auburn. ''Just yesterday 45 men, women, children and babies, bruatly [sic] murder by the evil bashar death squads. WHAT ARE WE DOING???''

In a connected world, smartphone footage of Assad's forces slaughtering women and children or a rebel fighter eating the lung of a dead soldier travel around the world almost instantaneously and fill the Facebook pages of young Australian Muslims.

The satellite dishes that line the streets of Sydney's west hint at how much families remain in touch via the more graphic and politically engaged Arabic-language channels.

Older generations fear for those they have left behind. Their Australian-born children find it all too easy to take up the call-to-arms.

''We don't want to transfer the problems from Syria to Australia but I fear that is what's happening,'' Australian Syrian Association spokesman Mohammad al-Hamwi says. ''Day by day, it becomes worse. So far two years and five months and it's still going on. It affects us because we are so far and we feel we can do nothing to help. It is unbelievable what is happening to our people in Syria.''

Seventeen incidents of sectarian violence in Melbourne and Sydney have been reported in the media but Fairfax Media has uncovered details of many more.

The conflicts in Sydney have ranged from bitter verbal exchanges on a Lakemba street to the firebombing, bashing and extortion of the owner of a Bankstown juice bar.

According to court documents, a group of men from al-Risalah, led by owner Wisam Haddad, told Juicylicious owner Ali Issawi they would hunt down any supporters of Assad, ''crush them down with our feet'' and ''slaughter your necks, all of you''.

It's believed Issawi has entered police protection. One of his attackers, the accused Hyde Park rioter Ahmed Elomar, was sentenced to a year in prison.

Haddad did not respond to a list of questions he asked be emailed to him.

Another Shiite Muslim, 29-year-old Ali Ibrahim, who was attacked last year, has gone into hiding and withdrawn charges against the alleged shooter. Fairfax understands Ibrahim made comments in support of Assad on Facebook. Fifteen minutes later, he answered the front door of his Punchbowl home and was shot twice in the legs.

The fear of retribution and lack of faith in police action has meant few people will press charges, let alone speak publicly. Mr Ibrahim no longer opens his door, even for friends.

The streets of Sydney's south-west have long been known for their peaceable mix of Afghan supermarkets, Iraqi hairdressers and Turkish bakeries — where Muslims of all stripes live and work side by side with little or no fuss.

However, with tensions running high, certain areas have become no-go zones for Sunnis, Shiites or Alawites. Daoud, one of few people prepared to speak publicly about the sectarian violence, is wary of walking through Sunni-dominated parts of Lakemba, Auburn and Bankstown.

When he invited Today Tonight's cameras on to Auburn Road in May, it took minutes for a crowd to gather.

Daoud was allegedly spat on and punched on camera by Omar Ammouche, one of a group of men who emerged from Bukhari House.

According to locals, men from the bookshop regularly harass and intimidate Shiite shopkeepers.

''I have received death threats from them,'' says an Iraqi man, who did not want to be named. ''Men came into the shop and demanded I take down some posters of Jesus Christ and imam Ali [revered by Shiites as the successor of the prophet Muhammad].''

He says he reported this to police ''15 times at least'' but no action has been taken.

Shops have been firebombed and their owners coerced into selling cheaply since a list of 22 Shiite businesses to boycott circulated online last year. The message ended with the line: ''BOYCOTT ALL KAFIR [infidel] SHIA [Alawite] SHOPS!!!! BOYCOTT THEM ALL!!!''

As he walks up Auburn Road, Daoud points out dozens of shops — including Vatan restaurant, Hamka Halal Meat, Auburn Fruit Market, Safir carpet shop, Sofra Kebab House, Diljah Mixed Business — and describes how each has been threatened verbally or physically.

After his $200,000 Bankstown chicken shop was firebombed two days before it was due to open last year, Rockdale City councillor Michael Nagi simply gave up and quietly withdrew from the area.

No one has been arrested and Nagi, a Shiite, will not talk about the incident except to call for calm.

Assistant Commissioner Frank Mennilli says police are aware of several cases of both reported and unreported extortion and threats but the perceived tensions have been overstated. ''However, there is no excuse for criminal acts to be undertaken in Australia in the name of some overseas cause or to use overseas events to justify acts of violence here,'' he says.

In many instances, Shiites are fighting back. Zaky Mallah, a young Sunni Muslim who spent three weeks on the front line in Syria last year, says he was subjected to death threats on his return.

''It's very, very ugly,'' he says. ''The sectarian hatred is there, you can feel it in the air. It's sad that it has gotten to that stage but it just gives you a sense of how bad the Syrian crisis is.''

Mallah, who was acquitted of terrorism charges in 2005 and runs an Australian outpost of the Free Syrian Army from his garage, says he drives with tinted windows and stays away from Shiite-dominated areas such as Arncliffe, Rockdale and Belfield.

'If the police don't take this seriously, we are heading towards a civil unrest,'' Daoud says.

''Some people become very scared and they keep silent but others are taking matters into their own hands. When I was attacked, I was helped by people from the Shia community who said, 'If you need protection just tell us'. They say, 'If they have gangs, we have gangs. If they have somebody who can attack …' ''

Police dispute the fearful assessments of those within the community and insist there have been some ''minor issues'' but no widespread violence attributable to the violence in Syria.

However, counter-terrorism researcher Andrew Zammit from Monash University's global terrorism research centre says there is the added and dangerous dimension of Australians coming into contact with al-Qaeda by travelling to Syria.

This, he says, is the difference between previous proxy wars fought on Australian soil like the Balkan War-inspired violence between Serbs and Croatians in the 1990s.

Federal counter-terrorism agencies say some Australians have travelled overseas to engage in terrorist training or fighting, yet no one has been arrested. Four Australians have died in the conflict.

Like Majzoub, Mallah was photographed on the frontline in Syria with an AK-47 in his hand but he says this was for self-defence and denies claims that he was fighting.

Police have expressed grave concerns that some young Australians will bring back military training and extreme ideas.

''Extremist ideology plus capability can transform into serious intent which is ready to trigger if a catalyst and an opportunity materialise,'' Mr Mennilli says.

He assures the community that police have ''heavily invested'' in proactive engagement strategies in south-western Sydney and have ''ongoing community consultations'' with groups like al-Risalah and Bukhari House.

On the streets of Auburn one rainy afternoon, matters certainly appear calm on the surface. Shops are buzzing with customers. Men converse cheerily with Daoud as

he greets them with a ''salaam'' on the footpath.

But the young man who emerges on the step of a nearby bakery to watch Daoud's every move hints at something more sinister. He is there to keep watch, Daoud warns. It is a subtle form of intimidation.

''There is no way to calm everyone down,'' Hamwi warns.

''Everyone is waiting for the other side to initiate a problem and then it will explode. It does not end until the crisis in Syria ends.''
