More than 200 Indonesian Muslims threw rotten eggs at Christians wanting to hold a Christmas mass near land outside Jakarta where they plan to build a church, police and a witness said.

Some 100 Christian worshippers intended to hold a mass near empty land where they hope to build a church, about 30 kilometres east of the capital, in a project barred by district government and community members in 2009.

Since then, worshippers from the Filadelfia Batak Christian Protestant have held Sunday services under scorching sun outside the property.

On Christmas day, however, local community members blocked the road near the land, Andri Ananta, a local police chief on Jakarta's outskirts, said.

An AFP photographer witnessed locals - men and women wearing Muslim headscarf, with small children in tow - physically blocking the road and throwing rotten eggs at the gathering worshippers.

Mr Ananta said police managed to convince the Christians to drop their plan and return home.

"We tried our best to avoid any clash and the Christians agreed to leave," he said.

Mr Ananta said 380 police and military personnel including an anti-riot squad were deployed to the area.

Church leader Reverend Palti Panjaitan said the incident came after a Christmas Eve attack on Monday evening when "intolerant people" threw not only rotten eggs but plastic bags filled with urine and cow dung at them.

"Everything had happened while police were there. They were just watching without doing anything to stop them from harming us," he said.

The country's high court last year overruled the district government's 2009 decision, but constant intimidation from Muslims in the area has delayed the church's construction, church officials said.

Indonesia's constitution guarantees freedom of religion but rights groups say violence against minorities including Christians and the Ahmadiyah Islamic sect has escalated since 2008.

Ninety percent of Indonesia's population of 240 million identify themselves as Muslim but the vast majority practise a moderate form of Islam.

A MUSLIM girl caught between her religion, her parents and wanting to be a typical Aussie teenager is at the centre of an apprehended violence order against her father after he found she had a boyfriend.

Police were called to the family home after the man threatened to kill himself and the 14-year-old girl when he discovered the boy in a room of their home, Parramatta Bail Court heard yesterday.

The man, who cannot be named, allegedly told police the relationship was disrespectful to Muslim culture and brought shame on his family in the Afghan community.

The court heard he tried to detain the boy in the early hours of New Year's Day at the house in Blacktown.

The family called police because they were scared the father would kill the boy.

After police arrived, the man became enraged because they would not arrest the boy, who had been invited into the house by his daughter.

He said the boyfriend would be killed if the incident happened in Afghanistan, the country he and his wife had emigrated from in 1998.

"The accused then stated, as the boyfriend would not be going to jail, the only thing left to do was kill his daughter and himself," police said.

"The complainant is stuck between her religion, strict parents and wanting to be a typical Australian teenager."

Officers claimed that on October 27 the daughter ran away from home. Her father said he would kill himself if she did not return by sundown.

When she did not return, the father attempted to hang himself but was stopped by his wife and son.

"The daughter said she fears that her father will kill her because of her actions and that if he doesn't, she will be locked in the house unable to leave, unless he kills himself," police said.

Police took out an apprehended domestic violence order against the father on behalf of the girl. He was charged with stalking, intimidation with intent to cause fear of physical or mental harm.

The father, who is a qualified surgeon in Afghanistan but employed as a taxi driver in Sydney, was refused bail because of his threats against the girl and self-harm history.

The matter will be mentioned in Blacktown Local Court on January 12.

Son slit dad's throat with stolen knife, court hears

A 37-YEAR-OLD slit his dad's throat after stealing a knife from a local department store, a court has been told.

John ElTurk, of Lansvale, allegedly attacked Sohail ElTurk as the 65-year-old man sat with friends and family inside his home in Hoxton Park, in Sydney's

south west, on Monday.
Police allege ElTurk stole a $25 kitchen knife from a Big W store at Carnes Hill between 12.30 and 12.45pm, then travelled to his relative's home.

At about 1.30pm, John ElTurk snuck up behind in Sohail ElTurk in his Tyringham Close home.

He allegedly cut his father's throat before fleeing the home, getting into his vehicle that was parked in the street outside.

Sohail ElTurk managed to drive himself to Liverpool Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery.
He remains in a serious but stable condition.

John ElTurk also drove to Liverpool Hospital where he was arrested by police. He was taken to Liverpool Police Station where he was charged with

attempted murder and larceny.

ElTurk did not apply for bail in Parramatta Bail Court yesterday, where the magistrate was told the defendant suffered serious mental health issues.

He was formally refused bail and ordered to undergo a mental health assessment, and will re-appear in Parramatta Local Court on January 13.

Some time on Friday Saleh Jamal will walk out of the South Coast Correctional Centre at Nowra as a free man.
Few on the street will recognise his bearded face or his name.
But the police who worked at Lakemba police station in November 1998 will remember, and the news of his release is likely to raise more than a few hackles.

In 1998 the notorious ''DK's Boys'' gang carried out a drive-by shooting on the Lakemba police station that left the building a mess of shattered glass, and much of Sydney in a state of uproar.

The shooting had five officers ducking for cover as 16 bullets from semi-automatic pistols passed through the station's foyer windows. Then police commissioner Peter Ryan pledged to track down those responsible and to make the streets of Sydney safe.
In May 2009 Jamal became the only person found guilty over the shooting as charges against the other men were dropped or not proven beyond reasonable doubt. He was later sentenced to a maximum of 12 years' jail for a range of charges including shooting with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Last Friday Jamal was quietly acquitted in the Downing Centre District Court after a 12-day retrial.
''Thank you, your honour, may God bless you and your family,'' a jubilant Jamal said.
The acquittal by Judge Steven Norrish coincided with the end of a nine-year jail sentence Jamal was serving for kneecapping a rival drug dealer at Greenacre in October 1998, a month before the Lakemba shooting.
''God willing I will be released next Friday,'' he told the court.
Jamal's release is a remarkable twist in what has been a dramatic and at times brutal and bloody story. For more than a decade the 37-year-old was one of the key members of DK's Boys, named after their leader Danny Karam, who ultimately perished in a hail of bullets from his own gang mates.
During the 1990s DK's Boys challenged Sydney's major players for a slice of the city's illegal drug market and, briefly, for a piece of the Kings Cross nightclub scene, with a brutal strategy that involved kneecappings and multiple murders.
In 2004, after being arrested and charged over the Lakemba shoot-out, Jamal fled to Lebanon with a false passport while on bail.
There he was subsequently arrested and jailed by the Lebanese government on charges of possessing weapons and explosives, planning acts that endangered state security, and possessing a false passport.
His five-year sentence for these crimes was later cut to two years after a Lebanese court ruled that only the passport conviction could be upheld.
In October 2006 he was extradited to Sydney where, in 2008, he was sentenced to nine years' jail for the 1998 kneecapping of a rival drug dealer at Greenacre.
The gang combusted in a fight with police on a White City tennis court in December 2008.
Last year, Jamal's conviction was quashed on appeal and a re-trial ordered.
Among the main reasons for the decision by the three-judge panel of the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal was that Jamal had not been permitted to accompany the jury when, as part of the trial, it visited the scene of the alleged crime.
In the Downing District Court this month Jamal faced the lesser charge of discharging a firearm in a public place.
He was found not guilty by Judge Norrish, hearing the matter without a jury.
He will hand down his reasons for the decision later this month.

A FORMER gang member has been jailed twelve years after a shooting attack on a Sydney police station.
Saleh Jamal will be behind bars at least until 2016 for his role in the attack on Lakemba police station in 1998.
Officers dived for their lives as a volley of bullets smashed into the station glass doors.

One hit a computer screen at head height.Judge Helen Morgan in the District Court today said it was a direct attack on one of the state’s law enforcement agencies.
“This attack was committed as an act of revenge against the police out of a misguided belief that they were unfairly targeting Lebanese,” she said.
The judge said they aimed to intimidate police and deter them from carrying out heir lawful duties.

He was a member of “DK’s Boys” an organised crime outfit headed by Danny Karam and was the get away driver when they targeted Lakemba police station in the night-time attack.
Judge Morgan rejected Jamal’s please for mercy on the grounds that it has taken so long for the case to come to trial.
She said that he was the architect of his own downfall.
His earlier trail in 2004, was aborted after he said he was ill.
He then fled to Lebanon on a false passport where he was jailed in Beirut after being convicted of terrorism offences.
The terrorism convictions was overturned on appeal and he was extradited in 2006 and in 2007 jailed in NSW for up to nine years for kidnapping arrival during a shootout at Greenacre in 1998.
His brother Mohammed Omar Jamal was convicted last year over a terrorist plot targeting Sydney Lucas Heights’ nuclear reactor.
Judge Morgan sentenced Jamal to a total of 12 years with a minimum of six and a half.
She said although he was the getaway driver he was as culpable as the gun who fired the shots into the police station.

The Chapel is now being desecrated by an occupation by a group of Kurds. They claim to be on hunger strike. Why choose a Catholic Church when there are so many other places in Belgium to protest? The statue of Our Lady has been covered by a cloth in such a way that she is mostly hidden from the eyes of the occupants.

THE federal government is asking church groups for access to private properties to house asylum seekers spilling over from Christmas Island.
Immigration officials have spent recent weeks quietly phoning churches, asking them to nominate convents, monasteries and boarding houses where at
least 100 children and families might stay.
The government has already expanded Christmas Island detention centre and last month began moving people without visas to detention in Darwin and
Port Augusta.
Any extra accommodation is intended to supplement hotels and motels, such as the Palms International in Brisbane, which reportedly won a government
contract of more than $1 million to house asylum seekers.
The province leader of the Christian Brothers, Vince Duggan, confirmed the search for more accommodation on the mainland was under way. ''I know
approaches have been made to some bodies,'' the Brisbane cleric said. ''The request was made for 100 places.''
It is understood officials were making the calls as recently as last week, seeking places for families and unaccompanied minors, who sailed to Australia
without parents.
In Sydney, the Josephites' Sister Kathleen O'Connor was also aware of verbal requests from the Immigration Department. She said the government was
putting out feelers quietly to avoid further politicising refugee issues.
''It's done quietly,'' she said. ''[Asylum seekers have] just become this political football.''
More than 90 per cent of boat arrivals to Australia in 2009 were eventually found to be refugees. However, prolonged detention in faraway places
hampered their ability to settle into the community because of increased stress and exacerbated trauma, Sr O'Connor said.
According to the Immigration Department, efforts to quietly find more accommodation were part of ''prudent'' planning.
A spokesman reiterated the government policy pledging to keep children and families out of high-security detention centres.
''[The Department of Immigration and Citizenship] has been investigating a range of private properties around Australia - including some owned by
churches - as potential additional accommodation options for families and children should the need arise,'' he said.
''This may provide an alternative and more suitable accommodation option to the use of motels or serviced apartments.''
The Immigration Minister, Chris Evans, declined to comment.
The opposition said the government's failed policies had forced it into ''billeting'' asylum seekers. Its immigration spokesman, Scott Morrison, said boat
arrivals were unaffected by the freeze on refugee claims from Sri Lanka and Afghanistan.
''I have no doubt that Christian churches will respond generously, which is their nature,'' he said. ''But we have always had the view that offshore
processing should be universal and that is our preference.''
More than 120 unauthorised boats have arrived in Australia in the 30 months since the Rudd government came to power.
Mr Morrison said the Howard government first took children out of detention. There were facilities on Christmas Island to cater for families - but these
were now full.

ROCK'N'ROLL bad boy Gary Angry Anderson believes life experience has taught him "Aussies use their fists" when they fight and that "weapons were introduced by other cultures".

The former Rose Tattoo frontman's comments before a Parliamentary inquiry in Canberra yesterday have experts describing his views as "pure fantasy" and ignoring "the realities of life".

Anderson, 63, was adamant he's not racist and said politically correct bureaucrats were getting in the way of progress when it comes to preventing youth violence.

“We Can’t be Beaten”

"The racial thing, the cultural thing needs to be addressed because it's not going to go away," he told a Federal Parliamentary Committee into the impact of violence on youth.

"You never kick a bloke when he's down . . . you don't gang up on a bloke. These things are Australian and we shouldn't shy away from being Australian."

The father of four said he had taught his sons these principles and said "other cultures" had introduced weapons, including the Lebanese, Indochinese and Pacific Islanders.

"We have to acknowledge that they have a different view about how they deal with each other," he said.

"It's not untoward for them to turn up to a fight with a hatchet."

Stepan Kerkyasharian said the entertainer's views were unrealistic.

"To suggest that if people of a particular kind of culture weren't here a particular kind of violence wouldn't occur is pure fantasy," Mr Kerkyasharian said.

"To suggest a type of violence didn't exist before is purely ignoring the realities of life."

Australian Race Discrimination commissioner Graham Innes agreed with Anderson that "some violence in Australia has a racial aspect" but said it had been going on since the goldfields in the 19th century.

"We need a zero-tolerance policy from government to say that multicultural violence is not tolerated," Mr Innes said.

"Violence amongst racial groups is not new - the white settlers were violent towards Aboriginal people."

Outside Parliament, Anderson, who has worked with numerous youth charities, said he grew up in '80s Australia when "Aussie kids didn't use weapons".

"We've got to tell Lebanese kids and Indochinese kids that it might be all right where you come from but it's not all right here," he said.

"To suggest that if people of a particular kind of culture weren't here a particular kind of violence wouldn't occur is pure fantasy," Mr Kerkyasharian said.

The only fantasy here Mr Kerkyasharian, is the belief in Multiculturalism, a belief in a social structure where the host culture is legally cannabalised by the inferior cultures, indeed proven failed culrtures of colonialist who’s own culture was so good they RAN AWAY from it.

These colonialists and cultural assassins from many and varied failed cultures, are not happy with been given sanctuary in Australia, no, not at all, they and the likes of Mr Kerkyasharian  immediately start eating away at Australia and it’s institutions, demanding they be given every right, and indeed legal sanction, to impose upon Australia the very same culture,social structures and beliefs that they say made their own countries un liveable for them and their families.

A defamation case taken out against Macquarie Radio by Islamic Friendship Association spokesman Keysar Trad has been dismissed, with the Supreme court judge finding he has racist views.

Two years ago it was ruled 2GB radio broadcaster Jason Morrison had defamed Mr Trad when he labelled him "gutless" and "disgraceful and dangerous" following a speech Mr Trad made over the 2005 Cronulla riots.

But the jury's decision has been effectively quashed by today's judgement from Justice Peter McClellan.

Justice McClellan ruled that the case should be dismissed, after lawyers for 2GB argued that information claimed to be defamatory was in fact true.

"There is little doubt that many of the plaintiff's remarks are offensive to Jewish persons and homosexuals,"

Justice McClellan said in his judgment.

"Many of his remarks are distasteful and appear to condone violence," the judgment continued.

"I'm satisfied that the plaintiff does hold views which can properly be described as racist.

"I'm also satisfied that he encourages others to hold those views. In particular he holds views derogatory of

Jewish people.

"The views which he holds would not be acceptable to most right-thinking Australians," Justice McClellan's judgment said.

Mr Morrison said it is a relief the matter has finally been resolved.

"I was very pleasantly surprised. These things are tough," he said.

"This has been hanging over me and this radio station for four years and it's not a particularly nice assertion that's been made, so I was very relieved at the judge's decsision."

Lawyer for 2GB's licensee Harbour Radio, Richard McHugh SC, had told the judge the "truth case" largely related to documents, including articles which Mr Trad had admitted writing and media interviews.

He read out parts of an article on homosexuals, submitting the views were "offensive" and showed Mr Trad to be a "disgraceful and dangerous individual".

He also played two radio interviews, where Mr Trad was asked about the comments made by his friend Sheik Alhilali, who had described scantily clad women as "uncovered meat".

Rather than condemning the sheik, Mr Trad was "an apologist for the appalling views" and gave out misinformation about the Islamic community, Mr McHugh said.

Mr Trad's case has been dismissed with costs.

The more than a decade, the barricade of political correctness which has protected Sydney’s self-proclaimed Islamic spokesman Keysar Trad has been dealt a mortal blow.

Justice Peter McClelland in the NSW Court of Appeal yesterday branded him a dangerous, dishonest, racist person and unbelievable liar.

Overturning a defamation judgement awarded to Trad against 2GB over a broadcast by Jason Morrison on December 19, 2005, Justice McClelland has demolished the nation that Trad is harmless assistant and translator to Lakemba’s Sheikh Taj el-Din al-Hilali, who in 2006 was the Mufti of Australia.

Trad had claimed he was defamed in a Morrison broadcast which followed a so-called “peace rally” the previous

day in which Morrison commented on a number of reports of the rally.
Like most of “peace” rallies, the gathering was aggressive and attended by the usual radicals protesting about most things that keep the world safe.

He said that he was satisfied that Trad holds views which can “properly be described as racist” and that he was “also satisfied that he encourages others to hold those views”.
In particular, he said, he holds views derogatory of Jewish people. The views which he holds would not be acceptable to most right thinking Australians.

He went on to say that Trad’s defence of al-Hilali’s description of suicide bombing as a legitimate tool, and his call for the delisting of Hezbollah as a terrorist organisation were dangerous remarks.

The support of the use of boys as martyrs in war was obviously dangerous.
He found that “various of the plaintiff’s actions including the material on his website were designed to contribute to anti-Semitism in the Australian community” and that “these views encouraged division and hostility between Muslims and non-Muslims in Australia”.

He also said that, in his judgement, Trad was a dangerous person because he incited violence or disparagement of women, Jews and homosexuals though his views.
He said he was a disgrace because he encouraged others to support attitudes repugnant to the Australian community.

He said Trad was not a reliable witness and said it was disingenuous to claim that he did recall that Adolf Hitler wrote Mein Kampf.

“I am satisfied that his answers were dishonest,” McClelland said.

Let it not be forgotten that al-Hilali is in Australia because former Prime Minister Paul Keating ignored warnings from the Department of Immigration and security services.

Trad has made a career out of supporting al-Hilali, during which he has lived on welfare benefits.

The ABC and SBS have given Trad a platform and quasi-legitimacy by unquestioningly permitting him access to their airwaves and seeking him out for comment.

He should be sent to Coventry now Justice McClelland has exposed the true nature of the beast.

Radical plan for pain By Piers Akerman News.com.au January 29, 2007 12:00 THE radical Islamists of Hizb ut-Tahrir (Party of Liberation) who met in Lakemba to cheer speakers calling for a global Islamic state, which somehow did not include Australia, raised a number of issues. The first is about Australia's tolerance for such a call, for, as students of the group (which is banned in a number of nations) know, an Islamic state could not possibly condone many of the freedoms basic to our society. Another issue is just as crucial: if Australia is not among the nations to be targeted and brought under the Islamist umbrella, exactly which nations does Hizb ut-Tahrir believe need an Islamist makeover? If "humankind" can only escape destruction if it becomes subservient to the "divine order of Islam", and Australia is not to be subjected to the group's reconstructive process, wouldn't its members be better off going to a nation which would benefit from a more proscriptive regime? The reality is of course that few Islamic nations want a bar of Hizb ut-Tahrir's proselytisers and they have to find helpful suckers in Western nations who will permit them to hold their "Islam-or-else" meetings. As it is unimaginable that any Islamic nation, or any other nation for that matter, would host a conference of fundamentalist Christians calling for the restoration of Istanbul to Constantinople, why should any Western state play host to these plotters? Are we so naive, so politically correct, that we feel compelled to host a party for people who wish to cut the throats of our metaphorical cousins, even if they promise that we are not (yet) in their sights? One of the speakers at the conference, Palestinian Sheik Issam Amera, told the audience: "If two people are united and a third person comes along and tries to incite disunity . . . kill him. Muslims are not unique in doing so as most nations kill those charged with treason. "The establishment of caliphate is an Islamic duty. The evidence for the duty for establishing (the) caliphate is confirmed in the Koran," he said. The Koran also mentions supernatural bodies, but that doesn't make them real. In fact, if one looks around the world and particularly at those states which nominate themselves as Islamic, one could draw the conclusion that followers of Islam are doomed to live in Third World poverty listening to hate-filled speeches from their religious leaders fuelled by envy of the comparatively successful nation of Israel, and with sufficient time on their hands to riot over almost nothing whenever someone gets to his feet in the local mosque. Sunday's conference, though little different from others held in some Muslim communities lodged in Western societies, heard calls for the political destiny of the Muslim world to be in the hands of Muslims and for external forces to be rejected. Judging by the manner in which members of Hamas and Hezbollah, both professing to be Islamic organisations, are currently kidnapping and killing each other, and considering the wars of attrition up to the current day waged between followers of the Shia and Sunni arms of Islam, any notion that Islamists could achieve a better record of governance than many Western nations, including Australia, is fanciful, no matter how vehement the calls for sacrifice and jihad may be. Hizb ut-Tahrir clearly has no place in Australia, and it would be heartening if more Australian Muslims said this. Unfortunately, as older Australians well know from the attempts to ban the Communist Party in the middle of the last century, it is awfully difficult to ban any group in this country. Greens Senator Bob Brown, aided by the Left-inclined Fairfax press, is attempting to disrupt the activities of the Exclusive Brethren, a minor Christian sect which has angered him because it quoted from Green policies in a series of political advertisements, but has barely raised a whimper about the treatment of homosexuals in Muslim countries. The NSW Government's recycled Police Minister John Watkins believes there is sufficient evidence to have Hizb ut-Tahrir banned but has failed to persuade his ALP colleagues in other states to join him in making such a recommendation to the Federal Government. Federal Attorney-General Philip Ruddock has asked NSW to provide evidence that Hizb ut-Tahrir meets the definition of a terrorist group and has also called on federal agencies to review the comments made at its conference to determine whether its conduct crosses that threshold. If Watson believes the body is breaking NSW laws, he is free to deal with it under state law. Civil libertarians, usually highly visible and irritatingly voluble whenever Islam and ban are mentioned in the same sentence, are nowhere to be seen or heard. Until firm evidence of illegal activity emerges, it would seem there is no recourse available beyond making the usual expressions of disgust and contempt that it deserves. That of course, is fitting proof that Australia has a robust and admirable pluralist culture – just the sort of thing that gets up the noses of the Hiz ut-Tahrir – if indeed they have such organs behind their hijabs and scarfs.

Mobile phones have been found in the prison cells of notorious gang rapists Bilal and Mohammed Skaf, raising questions about security at Goulburn jail.

Acting on intelligence, guards at Goulburn Correctional Facility's maximum security division searched the pair's cell on Tuesday.

"During the search they found hidden in the bottom of a cabinet, underneath a steel plate which was riveted to the cabinet frame, two mobile phones," a Department of Corrective Services spokesman said.

The brothers were strip-searched then split up after the breach was discovered, with Bilal, 26, placed in isolation at Goulburn while Mohammed, 25, was tranferred to Lithgow jail.

Bilal Skaf was found guilty of leading multiple pack rapes in Sydney in the leadup to the 2000 Olympics, summoning his friends by mobile phone for the attacks.

His brother Mohammed was found guilty for his part in four rapes, luring young women into the attacks, one of which lasted over six hours.

A major investigation is reportedly underway into how the two phones found their way into the Skafs' cell, with video footage set to be scrutinized.

Officers rostered in the brothers' wing will also be interviewed, a senior officer at Goulburn said.

While the Skaf brothers have had recent visitors, the prisoners were searched before and after the visits.

It is not the first security infraction involving the brothers. In 2002 the Skaf's mother, Baria, was banned from visiting all NSW jails after being caught on video trying to smuggle letters from Bilal to his fiance containing sketches of his cell and exercise yard.

In September of the same year the Skaf's father, Mustapha, was accused of trying to bribe security guards to let him talk to his son on the phone.

In August 2002 Bilal was sentenced to 55 years in jail, with Crown Prosecutor, Margaret Cunneen, said Skaf's actions, described as ethnically motivate hate crimes, had left a stain on the psyche of the citizens of NSW.

Then Premier Bob Carr said he was happy to see the "sort of sentence the community expects."

In October of the same year Judge Michael Finane described Mohammed as "a vicious, cowardly bully" before sentencing him to 32 years.

Bilal is now due to be released in 2031, while Mohammed can't apply for parole until 2018 after the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal allowed minor reductions in their sentences.

THE gang rapist Skaf brothers prised apart a steel cabinet to hide two mobile phones in their maximum security jail cell.

The details of the pair's underhanded concealment methods emerged last night as prison authorities remained baffled as to how two of the country's most notorious criminals smuggled phones into Goulburn prison.

One option being considered is that the phones were thrown over the prison walls, which Corrective Services senior officer Don Rodgers admitted could occur.

The phones' discovery last night led Commissioner Ron Woodham to vow that Bilal, 27, and Mohammed, 26, will never see each other again while they are behind bars.

"No. Never. They'll be in different jails and they'll never be together again," he said.

Both were strip-searched after the phones were found and moved into segregation where they will stay for two to three months until the investigation is complete.

Mohammed was moved to Lithgow jail and Bilal will remain in Goulburn jail's segregation section. One of the phones had a SIM card, making it live. There was no reason to believe it had not been used.

Prison investigators will use the SIM card from the Skafs' phone to work out how many calls were made, to whom and, possible, how long it has been in the jail.

There was speculation in Corrective Services that the calls would be more of a personal nature than criminal.

Prison officers only became aware of the smuggled contraband after a tip-off led to a raid on several cells on Tuesday morning.

The brothers, who shared a cell, had managed to drill out the rivets on a cabinet which has a tubular steel frame and sheet metal covering it.

They had popped one of the sheets off the bottom of the cabinet, hidden the phones on the frame and then placed the sheet metal skin back over it.

"After that we've ramped up the searches in the jail and pulled apart every piece of furniture in all the cells," Mr Woodham said.

"We had a special team brought down from Sydney to get involved and we had about 80 to 90 officers from different areas sent in to do the search."

While Prisons Minister John Robertson yesterday said the discovery of the phones showed the "system actually works", the State Government was criticised that two notorious criminals, guilty of the worst pack rapes in NSW, were able to get phones in jail.

Opposition Leader Barry O'Farrell said that the Government had a lot of explaining to do.

"What we know is they've been found in one of the most secure prisons in this state and they are owned, apparently, by two of the state's most notorious rapists," he said.

"When courts send serial rapists like the Skaf brothers to jail . . . there is meant to be punishment. The public does not expect them to have access to mobile phones."

The Government hopes to reduce the problems with mobile phone smuggling by creating jamming systems at its jails.

Mr Robertson said he hoped to receive approval from the Federal Government to trial a system at Lithgow jail. He also said the system that allows siblings to stay in the same cells was also being reviewed.

Southwest region corrective services assistant commissioner John Dunthorne said the Skafs were together because: "It's very hard to place any Skaf in any jail and certainly not with any other inmate. Nobody wants a bar of them."
