THE opposition has seized on a coroner's findings to accuse the government of acting irresponsibly by giving visas to Afghan refugees blamed for a deadly boat blast last year.

The Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, is under pressure to revoke the protection visas handed to three Afghans accused of plotting the April 16 blast on the boat known as SIEV 36. The men received the visas before an inquiry into the blast was complete.

Yesterday the Northern Territory Coroner, Greg Cavanagh, named three men as being part of a plan to cripple the boat and start a fire so that they could not be forced to return to Indonesia.

He found that Arman Ali Brahimi, Ghulam Mohammadi and Sabzali Salman had, with others, collaborated to lie to him about the explosion that killed five Afghan men and endangered Defence personnel who had boarded the boat.

The Opposition Leader, Tony Abbott, demanded to know who had decided to grant the men visas and challenged Mr Rudd to cancel them. ''My question is to the Prime Minister. It is simple, it is clear and it should not require him to read any briefing notes … Will he now revoke the visas of those three individuals who were found by the Northern Territory coroner to be involved in a plan to set fire to the vessel?''

Under taunts of being soft on criminals, Mr Rudd said the coroner's report had been forwarded to the Northern Territory police, who would decide whether charges would be laid.

''I am advised by the Immigration Minister that that decision [to grant visas] was made independently by his department through a careful and rigorous assessment of the merits of each individual case,'' Mr Rudd said.

But the opposition immigration spokesman, Scott Morrison, said the Immigration Minister could decide to deport the men on character grounds now.

''This is a government where ministers and the Prime Minister are more interested in protecting themselves from accountability than they are in making decisions and taking responsibility,'' he said.

Mr Cavanagh found the asylum seekers colluded to lie about the explosion on the boat, near Ashmore Reef. He said most of the asylum seekers had known of the plan to cripple the boat, despite their denials.

"Because they have all told similar lies, I can only conclude that they have all to some extent colluded with each other and decided as a group to lie to this inquest," Mr Cavanagh said.

Mr Cavanagh said one or more asylum seekers deliberately ignited petrol which had been spilt into the bilge, causing an almost instantaneous explosion.

The Immigration Minister, Chris Evans, said he was ''disturbed'' by the findings but would await the findings of any criminal proceedings before making a decision on deportation. Northern Territory police had supported his department's decision to give visas to all survivors of the boat blast, he said.

The Coroner also found the explosion could have been avoided if Defence personnel had properly searched the boat for petrol and confiscated cigarette lighters and matches from those on board.

The explosion would probably have been avoided if Defence had not served an "inappropriate" warning notice on the asylum seekers, telling them to consider returning to Indonesia.

Mr Cavanagh praised the bravery and professionalism of three personnel and said more people might have died but for their actions.

He found Defence members had rescued their colleagues first but he could not criticise that given the circumstances.

There has been NO announcement by the Beijing sponsored Lu Kewen,aka. Kevin 07 Labor Government, regarding the hunting down and arrest of the criminals responsible for the Murder of their five co conspiritors  and the attempted murder of the crew members of the HMAS Childers.

A 13-year-old Yemeni girl who was forced into marriage died five days after her wedding when she suffered a rupture in her sex organs and hemorrhaging, a local rights organization said today.

Ilham Mahdi al Assi died last Friday in a hospital in Yemen's Hajja province, the Shaqaeq Arab Forum for Human Rights said in a statement quoting a medical report.

She was wedded the previous Monday in a traditional arrangement known as a "swap marriage," in which the brother of the bride also married the sister of the groom, it said.

"The child Ilham has died as a martyr due to the abuse of children's lives in Yemen," the non-governmental organization said.

Her death was a "flagrant example" of the results of opposing the ban on child marriage in Yemen, which was leading to "killing child females," it said.

The marriage of young girls is widespread in Yemen, which has a strong tribal structure.

The death of a 12-year-old girl in childbirth in September illustrated the case of the country's "brides of death," many of whom were married off even before puberty.

Controversy heightened in Yemen recently over a law banning child marriage in the impoverished country through setting a minimum age of 17 for women and 18 for men.

Thousands of conservative women demonstrated outside parliament last month, answering a call by Islamist parties opposing the law.

A lesser number of women rallied at the same venue a few days later in support of the law, the implementation of which was blocked pending a request by a group of politicians for a review.

A Nigerian Islamic Sharia court has banned Twitter and Facebook debates on the country's first wrist amputation for theft, according to court papers seen by AFP on Tuesday.

The Magajin Gari Sharia court in the northern city of Kaduna on Monday ordered the Civil Rights Congress (CRC), one of the country's leading rights groups, to suspend its Twitter and Facebook online debates on the amputation, which was carried out in 2000.

The court granted an interim injunction "restraining the respondents either by themselves or their agents... from opening a chat forum on Facebook, Twitter, or any blog for the purpose of the debate on the amputation of Malam Buba Bello Jangebe," said the order.

Jangebe was the first person to have had his right wrist amputated on the orders of a Sharia court in Zamfara State, a year after 12 northern Nigerian states adopted the strict Islamic penal code.

The order followed a suit filed Friday by the Association of Muslim Brotherhood of Nigeria, a pro-Sharia group based in the northern political capital of Kaduna, which argued that internet forums would be used as "a mockery of the Sharia system as negative issues will be discussed".

In the wake of the interim injunction, the case is set for hearing on Monday.

The head of the CRC, Shehu Sani, confirmed to AFP that he was served with the court papers Monday.

"We opened the blog, the Facebook and Twitter chats 10 days ago to serve as a platform for which Nigerians could air their opinions on Sharia law as a whole and the justification or otherwise of the amputation of the hand of Malam Buba Bello Jangebe," Sani said on the phone from Kaduna.

Out of Nigeria's 36 states, 12 re-adopted a strict version of Sharia in 1999 nearly a century after it had been abandoned.

Zamfara state in the predominantly Muslim north of Nigeria pioneered the move after the country returned to civilian rule following 15 years of military dictatorship.

More than 1000 Sydneysiders go to the Lakemba Mosque to pray each day - and the congregation swells to 5000 for Friday prayers, a mandatory day of worship in the Islamic faith.

It's been two years since Sydney's largest mosque was open to the public.

As well as tours of the mosque, the open day will enable the wider community to question the sheik.

Sheik Safi agreed he was probably a little more moderate than past sheiks who have preached at the mosque.

He said past leaders had resigned themselves to a belief in a polarised clash of cultures.

Now Muslim community leaders were looking for ways to work together with the non-Muslim community to build a mutual understanding of the respective cultures.

"This year we decided to go big to make the opportunity to show that we're tolerant and we're trying to assimilate and work with each other, and to try and get a better understanding of what Islam is really about," Sheik Safi said.

"When you have experience with people - you can have more open ideas than before."

He said while everyone was invited to the open day he hoped those who had been most outspoken in their feelings against the Islamic community would take the time to visit the mosque.

"When people have a bad idea about you, you need to give them the right idea - we don't want to lie, we want them to understand who we really are and what our religion is about," he said.

"People don't know Islam but maybe they know a Muslim - that one person will reflect Islam to this man and the community. Our challenge is to let our people practice real Islam, not to claim they are Muslim."

I’ve seen it elsewhere around the world, but I didn’t expect to see it here. Certainly not on a hot summer’s afternoon at the Canberra Centre. But there it was. A ghostly figure walking towards me, clad from head to toe in a heavy black niqab, black gloves and dark shoes. She was trailing along behind her husband and four little children.

The sight of this hideously shrouded figure in an Australian shopping mall is confronting and offensive. And it makes me angry, very angry.

I wanted to stop and ask why she had such disrespect for herself and our culture that she would hide her face and body under all that black cloth, designed to render her shapeless and inhuman. But her husband shot me a glance, and I was silenced. Dumbfounded.

I abhor the burka, and the niqab. I hate what it does to women. I am appalled that women are separated from the world in this way. And I am furious that some women will continue to choose to wear it. But then, throughout history, feeble women who are afraid of modernity, have always been complicit in their own oppression.

The burka, with its tiny window of mesh over the eyes, and the niqab, with its letter-slit opening, is a tool of patriarchy used to subjugate women. This shroud of cloth thrown over women defies freedom. It is a symbol of control. Wearing it signifies an acceptance of segregation of the sexes. The cultures which demand such segregation are societies in which men are considered the natural superiors to women.

The fact that western, democratic governments allow this garb to be worn in secular societies is evidence that ‘gender equality’ and the ‘liberation of women’ are still just vague aspirations, mouthed with weak intent. Unless of course you’re French.

In an historic address on Monday the French President, Nicolas Sarkozy, called for an outright ban on this hideous instrument of control. “The burka is not a sign of religion” he said, “It is a sign of enslavement. It is a sign of subservience”.

His rally cry has been brewing for years, as the French parliament has watched with alarm the growing number of burkas and niqab’s appearing in French cities. The Urban Affairs Minister, Fadela Amara, who is also a passionate advocate for Muslim women’s rights, says the ugly shroud is akin to putting a woman in a “tomb”. She’s called on France to “stop burkas from spreading”.

It’s a tough call, given there are around 5 million Muslims in France. The 2004 ban on wearing hijabs at school, or in public offices, was met with furious protests around the country. A ban on the burka has the potential to ignite riots. Sarkozy knows that. And yet he is still determined to push ahead. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd must do the same.

The burka is not yet common here, but it’s only a matter of time. Australia is positioned in a region being transformed by the rise of Islamic fundamentalism. Radical Islam’s plan for domination is utterly incompatible with women’s equality. Put bluntly, Islamic fundamentalists view Australia, and all western democracies, as immoral and decadent - because the women are free.

Australia must not allow that radical and overt tool of fundamentalism, the burka, to be worn here. It defies our cherished values of equality and freedom.

Wearing the burka - or niqab -in Australia is an aggressive way of saying 'I will not integrate into your society, and I care nothing for the cultural mores and social traditions of this country'. Instead, the woman wearing it is demonstrating that she would rather submit to gender apartheid, than embrace the social norms of this place. The burka is an arrogant display of disrespect to Australia and the Australian way of life.

Covering women like this, and rendering them sexless and shapeless, is apparently to stop men looking at them. It is to ensure the sexual urges of men are not stirred or tempted. It is also a fierce display of proving a man’s power over his woman, and ownership of her.

The Koran calls on both men and women to display modesty. Why then don’t men wear burqas? Women too are sexual beings, who may also have their urges stirred and tempted by the sight of a man. But of course that doesn’t register in societies that view females only as sexual objects and temptresses.

By covering herself in a burka, a woman is relinquishing the right to express herself as a female. She is agreeing to suppress her own sexuality.

For a woman to argue she feels more comfortable hidden beneath her burka, away from the gaze of men, is unacceptable in modern society. Such a claim represents total submission to sexual subordination. Burka-Wearing Prompts The Return Of In Rickets In Birmingham

A new health awareness campaign has been launched among Muslim women by health officials in the Midlands after a rise in the number of cases of rickets.

It is thought that pregnant women who regularly wear a burka are depriving themselves of exposure to sunlight, which results in Vitamin D deficiency.

Sixty-five children in Birmingham have needed hospital treatment in the past three years for rickets, a disease which was thought to have died out in Victorian times. And health bosses fear this may be the tip of the iceberg with more cases of the illness, which affects bone development, not being formally diagnosed. Now they have invested £150,000 to fight the rise of rickets among infants in inner city Birmingham.

The wearing of burkas by Muslim women is thought to have contributed to its recent resurgence. A spokesman for the Heart of Birmingham Primary Care Trust, which is heading the campaign, said: “Anecdotal evidence suggests that mothers and babies from some minority ethnic communities may be more affected. This is because women traditionally do not expose their skin to sunlight. However, Vitamin D deficiency can also be due to confinement in the home, diet, mal-absorption syndromes and liver or kidney disease. Deficiency is easily counteracted with Vitamin D supplements.

Dr Jacky Chambers, director of public health at Heart of Birmingham primary care trust, added: “Women who cover up for cultural reasons may be at higher risk of Vitamin D deficiency. In addition to taking Vitamin D supplements, we are urging mothers to help themselves to get some sunlight. They should make sure they are exposed to the sun, without burning, for a short time each day.”

AN Afghan man shot dead his adult daughter and her boyfriend, who were both engaged to other people, after finding them in bed together, police said overnight.

The first cousins were found together on Wednesday after the 21-year-old man entered the 20-year-old woman's bedroom in the northern province of Baghlan, a police spokesman said.

"The two were under the blanket, but still in their clothes, when the girl's angry father walked in with an AK-47 machine gun and shot them both dead," spokesman Jawaid Basharat said.

A medical examination showed the pair had not had sex, he said.

He fired about six bullets into the man and four into his daughter, Mr Basharat said.

"The father confessed that he killed them both after he found them in bed," said provincial police chief Abdul Rehmand Sayedkhaili.

The motive for the murders was likely to protect family "honour". Similar killings are common in rural Afghanistan but rarely reported.

Islam and Afghan culture do not forbid marriage between first cousins but invoke severe punishment, including death, for adultery and extra-marital sex.

Islam must be respected, after all it IS a "Religion of Peace" and indeed one of the "Worlds Great Religions"

TALIBAN militants in northwest Buner district shaved the heads and moustaches of four Pakistani men as punishment for listening to music, one of the men said.

Buner has been subject to huge US concern after hundreds of Taliban fighters advanced into the area from the neighbouring Swat, where the hardliners fought a brutal, nearly two-year insurgency to enforce Islamic law.

"I was with three other friends in my car, listening to music when armed Taliban stopped us and, after smashing cassettes and the cassette player, they shaved half our heads and moustaches,'' he said.

"The Taliban also beat us and asked us not to listen to music ever again,'' said the terrified man.

Local police said they had no information about the incident.

The victim said neither he nor his friends lodged a complaint with police, as this would have been "useless.''

"It might have annoyed the Taliban further and I fear for my life,'' the man said.

Residents in Mingora, the main town in Swat, said Taliban posters had been put up in streets and markets ordering women not to go shopping.

The posters had appeared after the Taliban's controversial agreement with the government to enforce Islamic law in the region.

"We will take action against women who go out shopping in the markets and any shopkeeper seen dealing with women shoppers will be dealt with severely,'' read the poster from the Swat branch of Tehreek-e-Taliban.

"The peace agreement does not mean that obscenity should be re-born,'' it added.

Hardline Islamists in the extremist Taliban consider it "obscene'' for women to leave their homes, and ban females from venturing out in public without an immediate male relative -- namely a father, brother, son or husband.

For years, Swat was a popular ski resort frequented by Westerners but the Pakistani government effectively lost control of the mountainous district after the violent Taliban campaign to enforce sharia law.
