Cadbury will sell a mountain of chocolates this Easter, as it does every Easter. It has been careful to make sure that its products are certified as halal, even though it is not necessary. Hundreds of companies in Australia do the same. Halal certification has become a big business.

The essence of halal is that any food is forbidden to Muslims if it includes blood, pork, alcohol, the flesh of carnivores or carrion, or comes from an animal which has not been slaughtered in the correct manner, which includes having its throat slit. Food labelled as halal invariably involves the payment of a fee. It does not extend to chocolate but Cadbury lists 71 products which are halal, ranging from Dairy Milk to Freddo frogs to Red Tulip chocolates. The website also states: ''We do not have any kosher-certified products.''
''Cadbury also pay for halal certification on the Easter product range, even though Easter is a Christian celebration and nothing to do with Islam,'' says Kirralie Smith, who runs a website called Halal Choices. The website lists 340 companies in Australia that pay for halal certification, including Coles, Woolworths, Aldi, Franklins, Kellogg's, MasterFoods, Nestle and even Kraft's Vegemite.

Halal Choices has received more than 250,000 visits since Smith, a Christian activist, created the website two years ago to draw attention to the incremental extension of sharia into Australian culture.

''[Cadbury has] a standard letter to people who complain about their halal certification which says they have been assured the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils [which issues halal certifications] are not involved in any illegal activity,'' Smith said. ''They might want to explain the $9 million in fraud involving the Malek Fahd school.''
(Last year the Malek Fahd Islamic School in Sydney was ordered to repay $9 million in state funding which the state and federal governments said had been illegally transferred to the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils. A federal government audit also questioned numerous payments made to AFIC by Islamic colleges in Canberra, Brisbane and Adelaide.)

Halal certification has long been an accepted practice similar to the labelling of food as kosher for Jewish consumers. The website of the Islamic Co-Ordination Council of Victoria states: ''With five office staff, two external food technologists, four sharia advisers and over 140 registered halal slaughtermen/inspectors, ICCV is the largest and the most respected halal certifier in Australia … We have no shortage of manpower. We are ready to serve any company in Australia that is interested in producing halal product (meat and processed food).''

At the World Halal Forum held in Malaysia last April, Australia had 13 delegates. Nestle was a major sponsor, Fonterra another. The forum's website stated: ''Two milestones [at the conference] were the first major steps towards the convergence of halal and Islamic Finance, and recognition of the importance of halal accreditation schemes, especially in the non-Muslim world.''
What troubled Smith was the extensive payments for halal certification for hundreds of products that did not require any halal process. She then discovered examples of overt pressure.

''A wholesale chicken supplier in Perth lost $120,000 a year over three years because he wasn't halal certified,'' she said. ''The chickens he sold had been ritually slaughtered and were halal, but because he would not pay for certification he found all his outlets were forced to boycott him. He was outraged and held out for three years but had to give in to save his business. … Isn't that illegal?''
Halal mainly involves meat. Much of the non-meat food supply is intrinsically halal, and thus does not require certification, including milk, honey, fish, vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts and grains. Yet many producers and suppliers of such products pay for halal certification.

''I emailed Capilano Honey after I discovered they were paying for halal certification,'' Smith said. ''This was their response: 'While we appreciate that honey is considered halal under Islamic law, it is our customer's requirement to provide halal certification in order for us to conduct business with them.' This sounds like extortion to me. And why does nearly every fresh loaf of bread you buy in a supermarket or fast food chain have a paid halal certification? I have a list of 23 pages of halal certificates for breads.
''Parmalat have a huge list of halal-certified products, most of them being the white milk you buy in supermarkets. White milk does not need to be certified. They don't mark their labels and now they have removed the certificates from their website because of negative feedback.
''Purina Fancy Feast cat food is now on the list of halal-certified foods. Are cats becoming Muslim? Or is a lot of this just a money-making scheme?''

A FRIEND of mine recently told me that one of Australia’s largest supermarket chains produces all its meat at a halal certified site, and that Catholics cannot eat halal meat. Is this true? 
FIRSTLY we should clarify what we mean by halal meat. 
The word “halal” in Arabic means simply “lawful” and thus halal foods are those which are considered lawful for Muslims to eat. “Halal” is distinguished from “haraam” foods, which are forbidden. 

Among the latter are pork, blood, animals that have been strangled or beaten to death, alcohol, meat that has not been prepared in the proper way, etc. 
For meat to be halal the animal must be killed in a particular way. It must have its throat slit, and the person killing it must face Mecca and invoke the name of Allah,or God. 

When an abattoir can demonstrate that it follows this procedure, it may receive a certificate from the Muslim authorities as a halal certified site. Wherever possible, Muslims eat only halal foods. 

Where does this leave Catholics? Can we eat such foods? The first thing we should ask is whether Scripture has anything to say about the matter. In fact it does. In the Acts of the Apostles we read about the so-called Council of Jerusalem, in which the apostles and elders gathered to decide what to impose on the Gentiles who had converted to Christianity in Antioch. 

Among other things they told these converts that they were to “abstain from what has been sacrificed to idols and from blood and from what is strangled” (Acts 15:29). 
Jews, like Muslims, regarded blood as the very life of the animal and as such it belonged to God alone. Hence they did not eat meat that had been strangled, since it would have the blood in it. 
But why did the early Christians follow these Jewish practices? It must be remembered that these were the early days of Christianity and the first generation of Christians was still alive. 

Most of them were converts from Judaism, and it is natural that they would have felt a strong repugnance at the thought of eating meat with the blood in it, since this was prohibited by Jewish law (cf. Lev 17:10ff). It is probable that for some time they also abstained from pork, which Jews did not eat. 

As regards food that had been offered to idols, St Paul writes that since “an idol has no real existence” and “there is no God but one”, there is nothing wrong with eating such food (1 Cor 8:4). 

Nonetheless, since some Christians may be weak in conscience and think it is sinful to eat such food, others when in their company should abstain from eating lest they cause their brothers to eat as well and go against their conscience. He writes: “Therefore, if food is a cause of my brother’s falling, I will never eat meat, lest I cause my brother to fall” (cf. 1 Cor 8:13). 

It is probably for this reason that the Council of Jerusalem forbade the Gentile converts to each such food. St Paul sums up: “Food will not commend us to God. We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no better off if we do” (1 Cor 8:8). 

Two chapters later St Paul confronts today’s issue of halal food more directly, based on his earlier pronouncement that such food may be eaten without any qualms of conscience. 
As regards whether Christians should be careful not to buy certain foods at the market he writes: “Eat whatever is sold in the meat market without raising any question on the ground of conscience” (1 Cor 10:25). 
And with respect to what to do when invited to the home of an unbeliever, he advises: “If one of the unbelievers invites you to dinner and you are disposed to go, eat whatever is set before you without raising any question on the ground of conscience” (1 Cor 10:27). That would apply today to accepting an invitation to eat with a Muslim. 

In summary, it is clear that there is nothing in the Scriptures against Christians eating halal meat. The question of meat “sacrificed to idols” does not apply, even though not even that would present a problem, since halal meat is offered to Allah, the one God worshipped by Muslims, Jews and Christians.

A PREGNANT asylum seeker deemed a security risk by ASIO was offered free domestic help and childcare while another detainee has had drooping eyelids fixed by taxpayers.

An array of non urgent medical treatment provided to detainees has been revealed including a suspected war criminal who had his impacted wisdom teeth removed at no cost to him.

Details of treatment were contained in Ombudsman's reports on long term detainees and come as the government announced the latest asylum boat detected yesterday had 147 passengers on board, the biggest arrival since October last year.

Most of the detainees who have been given everything from free glasses and orthotics to dietary counselling to combat high cholesterol, have been rejected as refugees and are exhausting appeals or have received a negative ASIO security assessment.

In August last year immigration official offered the pregnant 33-year-old, whose third son was born in January, free "domestic assistance, occasional childcare support and assistance with (her daily) routine" on the advice of an occupational therapist and a psychologist.

The woman, who had attended ante-natal appointments at Fairfield Hospital while living in residential housing in the Villawood complex, rejected the offer.

She and her two sons arrived by boat in May 2010 and were in community detention, where she married her husband in April last year, until her release was revoked in April after ASIO delivered an adverse security assessment.
A 27-year-old Tamil Tiger had his impacted wisdom teeth extracted in June at Whyalla in South Australia, two months after he complained of dental pain.

He has been in detention since arriving by boat in December 2009 and was rejected as a refugee after Department of Immigration officials found "serious reasons for considering (the man) had committed a war crime or a crime against humanity."

A Department spokesman declined to comment on the man's case.The 38-year-old with drooping eyelids overstayed a business visa before being rejected as a refugee, prompting attempts to remove him.

While he has been in detention in Sydney, the man has had three rounds of surgery between December 2009 and January 2011 to correct his eyelids.

A Department spokeswoman said surgery was never provided for "purely cosmetic reasons."

Other cases include a 35-year-old with two wives who has been treated for everything from hearing problems to reflux and insomnia since arriving by boat in 2009.

"These cases, especially that of that of a suspected war criminal will do more than test the patience of the Australian public," Opposition Immigration spokesman Scott Morrison said.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Immigration said it had a "non delegable duty of care" to ensure the health and welfare of detainees and that care "is funded by the Australian Government."

She said treatment had to be clinically recommended by "health professionals such as GPs, dentists and medical specialists."

Meanwhile, the government is reportedly considering a plan to move families out of community detention onto bridging visas to save money in the May budget.

Families would be treated the same as single asylum seekers who receive about $440 a fortnight and some rent assistance to live in the community.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard would only say yesterday that a decision had not been taken.

97 asylum seekers caught Australia-bound by Sri Lanka

SRI Lanka's navy says it has seized a fishing trawler carrying at least 97 asylum seekers on their way to Australia.

The boatload of migrants belonging to Sri Lanka's Tamil minority was intercepted at Oluvil off the country's eastern coast on Wednesday, navy spokesman Commander Kosala Warnakulasuriya told AFP.

"In the arrested lot were 39 men, 18 women and also 40 children," Warnakulasuriya said.

They will be handed over to Sri Lankan police later in the day, he added.

Last year some 16,770 asylum seekers arrived on Australia's shores, with Sri Lankans the biggest group, numbering about 6360.

Hundreds have died making the treacherous journey over the past few years.

Canberra is struggling to contain the numbers and has set up processing centres on Nauru and Papua New Guinea.

Sri Lankans pay up to $US3000 ($A2800) for a place on trawlers that take around two weeks to make the treacherous crossing to Australia. Some migrants travel by air to Indonesia and then take rickety wooden vessels to the Australian coast.

On Monday two people including a young child died when an asylum-seeker boat capsized. More than 90 were plucked to safety and taken ashore.

LARGE families released from immigration detention into the community on bridging visas will be entitled to more than $700 in equivalent welfare payments and rent assistance each fortnight.

A single parent with four or more children could receive as much as $706, the Department of Immigration confirmed yesterday.

The first boat to arrive since the government announced it was retreating from its policy to send asylum seekers to Nauru and Manus Island was intercepted on Wednesday.

Customs spotted a vessel with 37 asylum seekers and two crew southeast of Christmas Island. They will be among almost 7000 asylum seekers to have arrived since the offshore policy came into effect on August 13.

The latest arrivals can now be considered for release into the community, where they will be paid the equivalent of a welfare benefit, after the government backdown.

The government's policy reversal came after the flood of arrivals overwhelmed capacity offshore and in Australian detention centres.
All asylum seekers released into the community can be considered for 89 per cent of the Newstart allowance and 89 per cent of the applicable rent assistance offered by Centrelink.

In addition, free basic health care will be provided through the government's Asylum Seeker Assistance scheme and the Community Assistance Support program.

A department spokeswoman said the assistance could go as high as $700 in the cases of large families, but said usually only small family groupings arrived on boats, meaning they would be entitled to a lower rate of benefit and rent assistance.

The lowest rate for singles is about $440 a fortnight and they would also be eligible for a small amount of rent assistance of $72 if they are single and sharing a home, and $108 if they are single and living on their own.

The Red Cross has been the lead agency providing services to those in the community on bridging visas after Immigration Minister Chris Bowen announced last November at least 100 people a month would be released from detention. The number of asylum seekers on bridging visas had swelled to more than 5200 at the end of last week.

The department appointed an extra five service providers in August to work alongside the Red Cross, the department spokeswoman said.

New providers working with those on bridging visas include the Multicultural Development Association, Settlement Services International, Access Community Services, Adult Migration Education and the Migrant Resource Centre of SA.

Meanwhile, the government flew another charter jet to Colombo yesterday to return 40 Sri Lankans, taking the number of those returned to 466 since August 13.

"People who pay smugglers are risking their lives and throwing their money away," Mr Bowen said yesterday.

"There is no visa on arrival, no speedy outcome, and no special treatment."

The Daily Telegraph can reveal the woman, an aunt to Supermax prison inmate Bassam Hamzy, was shot at point blank range in the legs as she opened the front door of her unit on Auburn Rd, Auburn, in a targeted and direct attack at 2.40pm.

Police have unofficially linked the shooting with another that occurred 20 minutes later, also in Auburn, when shots were fired at the house next door to that of convicted drug dealer Hakan Goktas, 39.

The main line of inquiry for both shootings is Goktas's co-operation with police when he was the victim of a road rage shooting last August.

His alleged attacker in the road rage incident was arrested in Queensland nine weeks later and extradited to Sydney.

The two shootings took place hours before revelations emerged in yesterday's The Sunday Telegraph that police were left shocked and angered after a senior member of the BFL gang was granted bail last week over a kneecapping at Bass Hill on February 9 this year.

Their 24-year-old victim in the case has gone into police protection after becoming a Crown witness and investigators fear the decision to grant bail may jeopardise his safety.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Arthur Katsogiannis said a review of that decision was being sought.

"All we can do is enforce the law and bring those responsible before the courts," Mr Katsogiannis told The Daily Telegraph.

"In relation to that decision, we'll be liasing with the DPP and seeking a review."

Muslim groups attack findings on sharia

MUSLIM groups have criticised the findings of a forthcoming parliamentary report on multiculturalism that denounces Islamic law and polygamous marriages.

Federation of Islamic Councils assistant secretary Keysar Trad said the report's findings, revealed in The Australian's Sunday edition yesterday, showed a "continued misunderstanding" of sharia .

"Sharia is just a term that applies to all religious practices, including being good neighbours and citizens," he said.

"We are able to practice everything sharia demands in accordance with Australian law," he said.

Mr Trad, who is known for his defence of polygamy, said the illegality of polygamous marriage would not prevent plural relationships.

"Aware that Australian law prohibits polygamy, they know a second wife could never be official. But their religion allows a man four wives and though a lot of what they say to each other about polygamy amounts to teasing, there is also a serious thread. It was Hanifeh who first raised it, approvingly, before they married"

Federation of Ethnic Communities Councils of Australia chairman Pino Migliorino called on both parties to depoliticise the issue, and focus on the economic value of various diasporas and skill sets provided by immigration.

"This is an area which can degenerate into politics of fear," he said.

"The criminal dregs of white society colonised this country, (Australia) and now, they only
take the select choice of other societies, and the descendants of these criminal
dregs tell us that they are better than us. And because we are not elitists, we
tolerate them.(Muslims TOLERATE Australians) Yet they want us to assimilate, perhaps they will only become
satisfied when we each die our hair red, wear blue/green contact lenses, and
operate a fish and chips shop, otherwise, we would not be truly assimilating,
would we?

ONE of the men charged over the Hyde Park Muslim riots yesterday held up a blood-stained beanie in court as evidence was heard of the confrontation between police and protesters.
Mohammed Issai Issaka has pleaded not guilty to riot, assaulting police and resisting arrest during the protest on September 15 last year, which was staged in retaliation to a YouTube clip entitled The Innocence Of Muslims.

One of the officers who arrested Issaka agreed he had been left bleeding, but said police had feared for their safety as he and other protesters surged towards them.
It is alleged Issaka joined in the protest as hundreds of people went to Hyde Park, where about 15 bottles were hurled by those in attendance.

Police say they do not accept Issaka's claim he was acting in self-defence to police restraining and hurting him during arrest.
When Senior Constable Raymond Carey was asked in evidence to confirm Issaka was wearing a white beanie during the protest, the 43-year-old Issaka held up the headwear for magistrate Jacqueline Milledge to see it was now covered with a large dried blood stain.
He held the beanie in his hands for most of the hearing.

Sen-Constable Carey told the court: "I thought I was going to be assaulted. He stepped towards me ... I wasn't going to take a chance (so) I grabbed him by the arm."
The Downing Centre Local Court heard Issaka shouted "just shoot me, just shoot me" and "flailed" his arms and legs around during his arrest. "I saw blood stains coming from his head, I thought he had hit it," Sen-Constable Carey said.
Video footage, taken from police and television cameras, was played in court and showed officers on top of Issaka near St James train station.

Sen-Constable Carey agreed he did not see Issaka throw a bottle, but said many
were left ducking for cover as the protest escalated out of control.

He said Issaka had been draped in a green flag and was with other protesters who "were yelling and screaming".
Another officer, Sen-Constable Joshua Dixon, told the court the protesters started throwing water bottles after hearing someone shout: "Why did so many people have to die in the name of religion?"
He described Issaka as looking "very threatening" during the protest.
The hearing was adjourned until May.

IF you needed proof that free speech in Australia is on the run, look at what happened when Dutch anti-Islam politician Geert Wilders came to town.

With 10 per cent of the vote in Holland, Wilders is a mainstream politician, leading the third largest political party in one of the most tolerant liberal democracies in the world. Yet in Australia he is treated like a pariah, denied a visa for months, and unable to secure a venue for his speaking tour in Perth.

Instead of a "welcome to country" before he spoke to audiences in Sydney and Melbourne last week, organisers had to read aloud a statement of Victoria's racial and religious tolerant act.

As much as anything, this curious legal requirement adhered to by the Melbourne-based Q society which hosted Wilders, explains why Australians are open to his message of creeping Islamisation.

That and the enormous security needed to guard him from assassins 24-hours-a-day.

It is shameful that of all the Western democracies Geert Wilders has visited it turns out, Australia is the most repressive.

Not only did more than 30 venues refuse to host him or cancel at the last minute, politicians denounced him and in Melbourne protesters tried to block the entrance of the function hall where he was speaking and pushed at least one attendee to the ground in violent clashes.

This of course is great publicity for Wilders. When you meet him in person, he is much more normal than his image would suggest. The shock of hair isn't quite so yellow and he presents as a tall, well-dressed, quietly spoken, articulate politician with perfect English.

"I have no problem with Muslims," he said reasonably on a balcony in an undisclosed location on Sydney harbour, with yachts clinking nearby, and an armed bodyguard even nearer.

"The majority of them are not extremist. But there is no such thing as moderate Islam."

As proof he spoke of of gays being beaten up by Muslims in Amsterdam "once the most tolerant city in Europe", of high crime statistics for Moroccan youth in Holland, the over-representation of Somalis on welfare, of suburbs looking like Mecca. In Europe he says "it is almost too late, but Australia can learn from the mistakes."

He says although he is not religious, he feels a sense of "mission" which he loves, although he has had to sacrifice his freedom, living with his Hungarian-born wife Krisztina for nine years like a prisoner, surrounded by bodyguards, moving from safe house to safe house.

He is strongest on his attacks on cultural relativism which he calls "the biggest political disease which says that all cultures are equal.

"They are not. I'm proud to say our Judeo Christian humanist culture is much better than the barbaric Islamic culture."

It was a message that struck a chord in Sydney, on Friday night, at speeches hosted by the Q society, which is named after the Melbourne suburb of Kew where its first meeting was held, and is dedicated to "preserving western values and making the discussion of Islam a respectable topic of debate," says member Marshall Ahern, a Lidcombe businessman. Unlike in Melbourne, the unionists and student socialist groups protesting outside the Liverpool function hall on Friday night were fairly quiet.

"I don't think he should be able to come here and say disgusting racist ideas," said Amy Thomas, 26, a UTS arts student.

Inside, Wilders said he just wants the right to state his views without being killed or put on trial as he was in Holland. The threat of an assassin is real. Two weeks ago his friend, Lars Hedegaard, a 70-year-old Danish journalist and a critic of Islam, was shot at.

Wilders invited the audience to "make up your own mind on who I am and what I really stand for."

Then he claimed Sydney was the Australian city "where Islamisation has progressed the worst.

"This city needs to hear the truth about the dangerous ideology of Islam ."

He complained that he had to wait five weeks for a visa to Australia.

But a radical sheik who calls Jews "rats, apes and monkeys or the scum of the human race" and will be visiting Sydney in a few weeks, "gets a visa within a day".

He said he wanted to warn Australia about Islam which he claims is "predominantly a totalitarian ideology striving for world dominance.

"I believe Islam and freedom are incompatible.

"The more Islamic a society becomes the less free and tolerant it will be even when the majority of Muslims are tolerant."

He cited suburbs in Holland, France and in Europe which have become no go zones for non-Muslims, where gays are attacked, alcohol confiscated, non-Muslim women forced to cover up, polygamy and female genital mutilation practised and the police dare not enter. Do you want all this to happen in Australia," he asked.

"No" shouted the audience.

He claimed Australia is heading down the same path.

"Your country too is facing stealth Jihad, and Islamic attempts to introduce Sharia law bit by bit.

He pointed to a proposed "Muslim enclave in Riverstone" , a Sydney sheik "who performs female genital mutilation, women walk around in hijabs, banks offer financial services compliant with Sharia law, separate segregated swimming hours for Muslim women, universities cater to Sharia demands for students but at the same time refuse to allow me to speak at their premises."

There was applause when he explained his platform: "No Sharia ... No more mosques. No more immigration from Islamic countries." But he received his loudest applause when he slammed as "most dangerous of all are the attempts of governments all over our Western societies to draft bills that restrict our freedom of speech under the pretext of discrimination or hate speech.

"I say we have to let the law protect us against Islam instead of selling us out to it."

The second loudest applause came when he praised Israel.

Much of what he says about the difficulties of Muslim integration in Europe is true.

But I couldn't help but wonder how it would feel for the decent law-abiding Australian Muslims I know to sit in that room.

What is wrong with a Muslim women wearing a headscarf?

What is wrong with painting an arrow on the floor of a jail cell pointing to Mecca?

What is wrong with Muslims building a mosque to pray in?

And why keep calling Muhammed a paedophile?

Some of what Wilders says is calculated to cause offence, and so if he is snubbed, he can blame himself.

But you don't have to agree with everything he says to acknowledge that he has the right to say it.

And as one audience member on Friday night said: "If he's a far right extremist, he's the first one I've heard who supports Jews and gays."

POLICE will hold a secret meeting with Middle Eastern community leaders today after a major announcement about Sydney crime backfired, causing tensions between Muslim leaders and police.

The government and police launched Operation Apollo last week with a major press conference announcing the Middle Eastern organised crime squad would have an "over-arching role" in investigating and targeting criminals involved in Sydney's shootings, especially in the south-west.

Some community leaders are incensed Operation Apollo appeared to centre on Middle Eastern gangs. "It is insulting to say all gun crime is the fault of Middle Eastern people," said Keysar Trad, a spokesman for the Muslim Australia Organisation.

"I was contacted yesterday afternoon by NSW police and told about the meeting and would be texted the location later."

But police stressed the meeting was part of ongoing community consultation about Operation Apollo. "We have held meetings before Apollo was announced and will have more in the future," Detective Superintendent Arthur Katsogiannis, commander of Operation Apollo, said.

Police said there was a misconception that only the Middle Eastern organised crime squad was involved.

"We will be using officers and intelligence from the homicide squad, the gangs squad, drug squads and other specialised police.

"The job is to get guns off the street and we need the community to help us as well."

It's believed about six leaders from a number of organisations have been asked to attend the meeting to try to calm angry community leaders.

Many leaders said the way the announcement was made gave the appearance all gun crime was being blamed on Middle Eastern people.

"There are bikies and other people involved in crime" Mr Trad said yesterday.

Another community leader who is attending the meeting said: "We have been asked not to talk about the meeting or say when or where it is. I'm surprised the media have found out. I was told it was to explain their position and to try to explain they are not singling out Muslims."
