Australia's Green Ideological Disaster

Australia is providing a case study in the self-destructive politics of green ideology, when believers of the religion of global warming gain political leverage.

Between 1996 and 2007, John Howard became Australia's second-longest-serving prime minister, with his center-right administration being regarded as the epitome of responsible economic management, overseeing the "good years for Australia."  In 2007, Kevin Rudd's left-wing Labor Party gained office, and by 2009, a six-year run of budget surpluses gave way to the largest deficits in modern politics.

A slew of ideologically charged policies followed, including a nationally subsidised home insulation scheme which was unregulated, resulting in millions of wasted funds and even a death due to unqualified installation, and a public education "revolution" to renovate school buildings where the government happily paid exorbitant over-inflated tenders for unnecessary and, in some cases, unwanted refurbishments, blowing over $1 billion.  This "revolution" was overseen by Rudd's deputy, Julia Gillard.

With plummeting polls leading into the 2010 election, having been bestowed with the mantle of the worst prime minister in Australia's history, Rudd's leadership was successfully challenged by Gillard.  However, Gillard was no shoe-in for prime m,inister, and to counter an effective campaign by the conservatives who warned that another Labor government would mean an unpopular carbon emissions tax, Gillard declared that "there will be no carbon tax under the government I lead."

The election was even tighter than predicted and resulted in the first hung parliament since 1940.  To secure power, Gillard chose to cut a deal with three independents and a lone Greens member of parliament.  Despite her declaration to the contrary, Gillard was now over a (green) barrel and was forced to renege on her commitment not to introduce a carbon tax in order to honor her agreement with the Greens, whose agenda not surprisingly included a carbon tax.
It's taken Gillard two years to implement the controversial tax, during which time she has been irreverently referred to as "Ju-liar."  Thoughts of staying in power have no doubt helped her withstand such criticism, along with the support of a sympathetic Obama. 

During his visit here in November last year, he expressed his support for the tax, saying, "I think that's good for the world ... I actually think, over the long term, it's good for our economies, as well, because it's my strong belief that industries, utilities, individual consumers -- we're all going to have to adapt how we use energy and how we think about carbon."

The tax came into effect at the start of the 2013 financial year, yet after only a few weeks, the vociferous reaction from the Australian public can't be ignored.  They are smarting not only from a new controversial tax, but also from a prime minister who expressly said she would not implement it.  The foundation of the Labor Party, working-class families, are feverishly adjusting their weekly grocery budgets to account for a policy that many would have never thought possible.  Long-term voters of the left are shell-shocked, feeling cheated and abandoned.

Far from serving the working class, a carbon tax is the Trojan Horse of what many view as eco-terrorist environmentalism designed at saving trees -- or worse, generating a warm fuzzy feeling inside -- rather than jobs and a sustainable future.

One would hope that deliberate untruths would be uncommon in Western politics, but outright lying should never be tolerated.  There has been much philosophical deliberation about why people lie, but ultimately in politics the issue is whether the electorate is prepared to tolerate such conduct.  The polls here suggest a distinct lack of mercy.  In the past weeks, reports indicate that the Labor-Greens coalition is under immense pressure, with Labor Party members labeling the Greens as "extremists" and the Greens, ironically honestly, describing Labor as lacking values and standing for nothing.

The relevance of Australia's experience for the U.S. is that it highlights the degree of ideological blindness the left can be prone to.  In Australia's 150-seat House of Representatives (the equivalent of Congress), the Greens secured one seat.  Notwithstanding the vagaries of the Australian electoral system, that equates to roughly 0.6% of the vote.  Simplistically put, by making a deal with the Greens, the incumbent administration has implemented a policy that less than 1% of the electorate voted for.

The concern to a modern liberal democracy like Australia is not that minority political parties such as the Greens exist, but that they are offered a place at the table without the consent of the public at large.  Obama, as far as I can tell from here, was forced to shelve his plans for a carbon tax because even the Democrats could see the negative economic consequences.  Yet Gillard has chosen to somehow live in denial of its affects on the long-term health of the Australian economy, which is beyond me -- but then there are so many truths extreme liberals fail to acknowledge that it's not entirely surprising.
Bush had his critics, but at least one knew where he stood.  John Howard certainly held his ground on an issue, no matter the reaction of the chattering masses.  The danger of the left's liberalism is that it is so focused on popularity that its policies are often extremely short-sighted.  Gillard must be struggling to reconcile her short-term desire for power with her integrity.
Reports suggest that Obama is doing his best to "bankrupt" the coal power industry.  What should be of concern to U.S. voters is that Obama's energy policy could well be the thin edge of the wedge of increasingly-left-of-center ideology crystalizing into policy.  I trust that the events Down Under serve as a timely reminder of what the left is prepared to deny in order to maintain a false ideology.

The great cover-up of the illegal asylum-seeker traffic to Australia is beginning to unravel.

The Rudd government’s relentless claims that “push” factors - the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, unrest in Pakistan - have been responsible for driving more refugees to our shores are proving to be hollow.
The “pull” factors - Labor’s softening of the Howard government’s hard line against people-smugglers and opportunistic asylum-seekers - remain the principal factors in the huge increase in numbers of undocumented illegal arrivals in Australia, the biggest since 2001.

Now it is revealed that a refugee advocate Ian Rintoul was in constant mobile-phone contact with boatloads of refugees even as they prepared to leave Indonesian waters for Christmas Island.

According to reports in The Australian newspaper last Friday, Rintoul acted as a conduit for messages between asylum-seekers aboard an illegal people-smuggling boat in Indonesian waters, Pakistani people-smuggling facilitators and Australian authorities.

His role came to light when he contacted the Australian Border Protection Command about the plight of passengers, including women and children, aboard an Australia-bound vessel, which contacts in Pakistan had conveyed to him.

Rintoul was in touch with both the Pakistan end of the operation and those aboard the vessel, who apparently feared for their lives and wanted to be rescued.

As the boat was still in Indonesian waters, the Indonesian navy was alerted and brought into the operation.

Although it could not locate the vessel, its passengers have indicated that they reached safety on an island in East Nusa Tenggara province.

Will the Australian Federal Police investigate Rintoul’s involvement in the incident?

Since Labor came to office, Immigration Minister Chris Evans has moved with ferocious haste to remove possible impediments for queue-jumpers.

There’s no doubt the new arrivals reaching Christmas Island, where they are assured of residency permits within 90 days, are jumping the queues administered by the UN High Commission for Refugees and bodies such as the International Organisation for Migration.

Acting under the radar, Evans has surreptitiously removed the character test that used to apply to new arrivals and protected Australians from those whose general conduct was questionable.

Shadow immigration minister Sharman Stone says Senator Evans directed the Immigration Department to disregard a person’s character, the provision of bogus documents, behaviour that was disreputable and acts that fell short of criminal fraud.

Evans’ latest direction also widens the scope of considerations to allow people who are found not to be of good character to nevertheless enter and remain here in Australia.

This may well be why the Government has done nothing about accused East Timorese human-rights violator and murderer Guy Campos, who is still at large, having entered Australia on a pilgrim’s visa for the World Youth Day celebrations last year.

Evans has significantly increased the “pull” factor for illegal entrants by changing rules that required the expectations of the community to be considered when decisions were taken on whether to refuse illegal immigrants entry to Australia or remove them from the country.

Someone who commits serious crimes against the Migration Act is no longer considered to be of character concern.

Further, this minister has personally overturned the decisions of the Migration and Refugee Review Tribunal and the courts more than 1000 times.

Yet he has claimed in his statements that ministerial intervention cannot result in a fair outcome and has stated that he doesn’t want to “play God”.

Evans has also said he wants to delegate his powers back to tribunals and the department, but has not done so.

As with so many of the public statements of the Rudd ministry, there’s a huge gulf between what is said and what is done.

The previous Coalition government managed to halt the number of unsafe and illegal people-smuggling boats attempting the hazardous voyage to Australia.

The Rudd government has abolished almost every barrier to this traffic.

It has discarded temporary protection visas, it has dropped the 45-day rule that required applications for protection visas to be made within 45 days of arrival in this country, and it has now proposed a new category of visa for those who currently are ineligible for refugee protection under United Nations High Commission for Refugees rules.

Waiving the rules for those who can afford to jump the queue, those who have been living safely for the most part in third nations and not in refugee camps, hurts the most needy: those living under blue plastic in camps around the world.

Yet once again, we see the Rudd government secretly destroying policy that clearly worked and replacing it with flawed regulation that relies on ministerial discretion.

Such flouting of the community will is doubtless going to result in increased numbers embracing unwholesome anti-immigration groups.

Simply flood Australia with as many illegal hostile aliens and impose their predominantly Muslim culture,facilitated by satellite Labor Party groups,"concerned citizens" and other fronts for International Socialism,and bingo who they gonna vote for?

Stephen Conroy's mandatory internet filtering plans have earned him the title of Internet Villain of the Year at the 11th annual Internet Industry Awards.

The Internet Villain category recognises individuals or organisations that have upset the Internet industry and hampered its development - those whom the industry loves to hate.

As Australia's communications minister, and supporter of one of the world's most ambitious internet censorship plans, Senator Conroy beat out tough competition from the likes of the European Parliament and French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

The nominations for the UK Internet Industry Awards' Internet Villain of the Year 2009 included;

The proposal would force websites to use a pop-up or other intrusive method to notify visitors to a website every time they received a cookie, even though the technology to control such behaviour is already built into many web browsers.

10,000 Illegals Massing in Malaysia preparing to invade Australia

INDONESIAN authorities are bracing for a huge influx of boat people, anticipating as many as 10,000 asylum-seekers are waiting in Malaysia to transit through the archipelago and on to Australia.

This estimate was backed by a Malaysian group that deals with unauthorised immigrants. An Australian Government source warned of the potential for a similar influx to the thousands who began arriving in Australia from the late 1990s.

About 1500 asylum-seekers have arrived in Indonesia this year and registered for refugee status, almost all travelling by boat from Malaysia. Another 1500 are believed to have arrived and have not registered.

Indonesian police intelligence suggests between 7000 and 10,000 more people are waiting in Malaysia to make the journey once their passage is organised by people-smugglers.

"It could be 10,000," said senior commissioner Eko Danianto, head of the people smuggling unit at the Indonesian National Police.

"They comprise a mix of nationalities, not only Afghans. There are also Sri Lankan, Myanamerese (Burmese), Iraqis."

However an Australian academic, Dr Roslyn Richardson, of Charles Sturt University, has said asylum seekers know little about Australia before their arrival here.

Networks of people-smugglers service the 1 million Indonesian illegal workers who regularly travel to Malaysia by boat. The same networks also help arrange passage to Australia via Indonesia.

On Saturday, Malaysian authorities arrested 36 Afghans and six Pakistanis being smuggled to Australia via Indonesia. On Sunday, a boat carrying 194 asylum-seekers, mostly Sri Lankans, was intercepted near Christmas Island. Immigration sources said it was believed to have come from Malaysia. It was the biggest boatload of asylum-seekers to arrive in eight years.

"When they start getting big numbers through on a boat, they [people smugglers] get credibility and they get money. It becomes a virtuous cycle for them," said one Australian immigration enforcement official.

Australia and Indonesia have improved co-operation on people-smugglers and have disrupted more boats than the 16 that have reached Australia this year.

With Australian financial and technical support, Indonesia will announce tomorrow up to 12 police "strike teams" dedicated to combat human trafficking.

But a new wave of asylum-seekers from Malaysia will test that capability, which will take months to get running.

Aegile Fernandez, the co-ordinator of the Malaysian immigration support group Tenaganita, agreed with the assessment that up to 10,000 asylum-seekers were waiting in Malaysia. "There would be 10,000," she said. "I would put the blame on these agencies that have been promising Australia as the destination."

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has 49,000 registered refugees and asylum-seekers in Malaysia and estimated there are 45,000 unregistered illegal immigrants.

The Australian Government declined to comment, except to note the number of asylum-seekers was rising worldwide. However, one source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: "It could be 10,000. It could be 5000 or 20,000. We just don't know."

Dr Richardson said strong deterrent messages from Australia did not cut through.

"People smugglers do not pass on detailed policy information," she said yesterday. The asylum seekers knew little of Australia, let alone its immigration policies.

In her study, the reasons 27 refugees gave for coming to Australia centred on its comparative cheapness and accessibility.

The research contradicts Federal Opposition claims that policy changes last year led to a surge in boats.

A report out today by the Migration Institute of Australia found migration agents were perceived to be poorly trained and shonky by parliamentarians, refugee advocates, official and the courts.

THE Federal Government has disputed suggestions its Christmas Island detention facility is nearly full as about 200 more asylum seekers head to the island.

The 194 asylum seekers are heading to the centre after the navy picked up the suspected illegal-entry vessel off Christmas Island today.

It is the 15th boatload of suspected asylum seekers intercepted in Australian waters this year and is believed to be the biggest group of arrivals since 2001.

Almost all the passengers are adult men, with two or three women on board but no children.
It is not known where the people have come from.

"Minister for Home Affairs, Brendan O'Connor, said the interception of the vessel showed border protection was working."

You bone head, O'Connor, you are supposed to send them back to whence they came,NOT invite them in, this is the fifteenth bloody boatload this year you dope.

Immigration Minister Chris Evans said facilities on Christmas Island - which can accommodate 1,200 in total - could adequately cater for the 479 asylum seekers currently on the island, as well as the new arrivals.

The detention centre alone holds 800 people.

"There are a number of facilities on Christmas Island to accommodate unauthorised boat arrivals including a secure detention centre and community housing," he said in a statement.

"Children and, where possible their families, are not held in immigration detention centres."

The opposition again raised concerns that the Rudd government's border protection policies may be encouraging more people to come to Australia by boat to seek asylum.

Opposition customs spokeswoman Sussan Ley reiterated her call for an independent inquiry into why more people were arriving.

"We've raised serious concerns in the opposition that it is softening of border protection policies,'' Ms Ley said.

"That is what all the messages are indicating strongly."

The Rudd government has taken a more humanitarian approach to border protection, softening mandatory detention rules and abolishing temporary visas for asylum seekers.

Ms Ley said facilities at Christmas Island were already "stretched to capacity''.

"Nearly 200 more people on board coming to Christmas Island is seriously going to stretch the resources and the capacity of the Christmas Island detention centre and the island generally," she said.

Ms Ley also said she was "extremely worried'' about safety, given the large number of people on board the vessel.

Minister for Home Affairs, Brendan O'Connor, said the interception of the vessel showed border protection was working.

"The Australian government is committed to strong border security arrangements and is determined to deal effectively and appropriately with people smugglers," Mr O'Connor said.

People-smuggling baron Ali Cobra seized in action

ONE of the biggest fish in Indonesia's people-smuggling racket has been netted, after police raided a house in the eastern port city of Makassar.

The 30-year-old - known to asylum seekers the world over as Ali Cobra and described by Indonesian authorities as the "Noordin M.Top" of the trafficking racket, in reference to the regional terror tsar who has eluded capture for years - was seized on Monday night.

Ali Cobra, also operating under the name Labasa Ali, was in the process of organising a trip to Australia for 10 Afghan asylum seekers, some of whom had previously tried to make the perilous trip but had been detained by Indonesian police.

All 10 Afghan men, as well as the alleged people-smuggler, were captured in the swoop. News of the arrest comes as Australia finds itself confronting a new wave of boat arrivals.

On Tuesday, Border Protection Command intercepted a boat carrying 50 asylum seekers - the 11th such vessel to be detected this year. And late on Tuesday night, four asylum seekers found on a beach on Deliverance Island in the Torres Strait arrived at Christmas Island. The men - two Afghans, a Sri Lanklan and an Indian - were transported on a commercial flight from Perth.

Ali Cobra has established a dominant hold over the trade in recent years; according to one senior Indonesian immigration official who spoke on condition of not being identified, "in almost every case in recent times he is mentioned".

This includes an ill-fated attempt in January by a group of 18 Afghans, Pakistanis and Burmese to sail in a small fishing boat from Rote Island, west of Timor, to Ashmore Reef. Nine of those on board, including a nine-year-old boy, died when the boat sank.

One of the 10 Afghans arrested this week used a hidden mobile phone to tell The Australian from his immigration detention cell - having been returned there after Monday night's raid - that it was "absolutely" the Rudd Government's relaxed policy on boatpeople that was driving the surge in arrivals by sea.

"Absolutely. We, like everybody who tries to go, we know the detention regulations have been lifted since the fall of John Howard," said Kabul man Gulistan Ali, 32.

"We know the new Government has condemned the actions of the previous one, and has made the policies much easier for asylum seekers. We know this."

Mr Ali said he and two fellow Afghans escaped from the Indonesian detention centre about a week ago by scaling a 20m wall, leaping to the ground, hiding in dense jungle for two days and then walking 60km to Makassar, where they were contacted by phone and given an address to meet their handler.

Gulistan Ali and his two fugitive companions had previously tried to make the dangerous sea crossing on February 2, when they were arrested in the southeast Sulawesi port of Bau-Bau, preparing to board a small wooden boat.

All three had been in the detention centre, near Makassar city, since then. Gulistan Ali said the "difficult psychological situation" of being incarcerated in the "brutal conditions" there had triggered his second illegal attempt to reach Australia.

Gulistan Ali said he had paid "around $US9000" ($12,000) in total to people-smugglers since arriving in Indonesia early this year; another of the trio, Ahmad Ghahera, 25, said he paid about $US8000. Both men handed over most of that money on arrival in Jakarta, after flying from Kabul via Kuala Lumpur.

They had obtained visas from the Indonesian embassy in Kabul; there have been claims made of officials there providing the entry documents for up to $US1500. Indonesia's foreign ministry denies that allegation.

Gulistan Ali, who has a wife and two toddlers in Afghanistan, said he knew there was "less than a 50 per cent chance of succeeding, of not drowning" in the attempt to reach Ashmore Reef in Australia's northwestern waters, both in the one planned for this week and that of three months ago.

However, his life, he said, "is already ruined. Either I die - and I'm not concerned if that happens - or I secure a future for my children."

However, Gulistan Ali warned that even a figure as significant as Ali Cobra should not be seen as the end of the trail in the people-smuggling business operating out of Indonesia.

"It's a very organised mafia. But the organiser of it absolutely does not come before the people. They stay behind the curtain.

"I understand that people are very often cheated. They hand over their money and then the smugglers just report them to the authorities, to the police."

The majority of the $US9000 he had paid went, he claimed, to a smuggler "who has not been arrested". Also arrested this week in Jakarta was alleged people-smuggler Sajjad Hussein, thought to have been responsible for organising a boatload of asylum seekers intercepted in Australian waters on April 29.

THE Rudd Government has acknowledged that the supremacy of the US has begun to fade and Australia is preparing for an uncertain future in which it can no longer rely on the protection of its main ally.

In a fundamental shift in defence plans, the Government has explicitly declared that US primacy in the Asia-Pacific - the bedrock of the nation's security since

World War II - may be ending. The change, caused by the rise of new great powers such as China, is set to produce growing regional tensions and a "sudden deterioration" in Australia's security.

A 20-year defence blueprint, to be released by the Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, today, prepares for a multibillion-dollar build-up of naval and air forces to ensure that Australia can defend its northern and sea approaches.

It says a regional shake-up is under way but US supremacy will not be blunted before 2030 and assesses the chances of an attack on Australia in the short term as "very remote".

The white paper, Defending Australia In The Asia Pacific Century: Force 2030, is the first since 2000 and outlines a range of security threats, including instability caused by the financial crisis, cyber warfare, failed states in the Pacific, Islamist terrorism, weapons of mass destruction, and climate change.

It warns that Australia must ensure it can protect itself amid an emerging range of great powers in the region - particularly China, India and Russia - which could lead to a "miscalculation" with disturbing consequences for Australia.

"Australia has been a very secure country for many decades, in large measure because the wider Asia-Pacific region has enjoyed an unprecedented era of peace and stability underwritten by US strategic primacy," the paper says. "That order is being transformed as economic changes start to bring about changes in the distribution of strategic power. Risks resulting from escalating strategic competition could emerge quite unpredictably."

The Minister for Defence, Joel Fitzgibbon, said the world faced "the beginning of the end" of the unquestioned dominance of Australia's principal ally since the Cold War.

The paper criticises China for failing to explain its substantial military build-up in recent years, which appears to have exceeded the force needed for a war over Taiwan. China's military modernisation will be little affected by the global financial crisis and is set to limit the ability of the US to control the region, it says.

"The pace, scope and structure of China's military modernisation have the potential to give its neighbours cause for concern if not carefully explained, and if China does not reach out to others to build confidence regarding its military plans.

"As other powers rise, and the primacy of the US is increasingly tested, power relations will inevitably change. When this happens there will be the possibility of miscalculation … A potential contraction of US strategic presence in the Asia-Pacific region, with a requirement for allies and friends to do more in their own regions, would adversely affect Australian interests, regional stability and global security."

The paper affirms support for the US alliance and for US-led efforts to bolster global security but warns Australia will not put troops at risk "in distant theatres of war where we have no direct interests".

Instead, the Government has focused on defending the borders of Australia, primarily by building air and naval power to protect the northern sea-air gap, maritime approaches and offshore oil and gas reserves.

A range of large-scale purchases includes a doubling of the submarine fleet to 12, about 100 F-35 Joint Strike Fighters, eight frigates with submarine detection capability and - as planned - three air warfare destroyers. For the first time Australia will acquire an arsenal of sea-based long-range cruise missiles.

"The ability to deter or defeat armed attack on Australia will continue to be the primary force structure determinant … This means focusing predominantly on forces that can exert air superiority and sea control in our approaches."

The Government has kept its commitment to boost the Defence budget by 3 per cent each year until 2018, but plans to scale this back to 2.2 per cent until 2030.

It says an internal reform program will save $20 billion.

Pauline Talty – the woman surviving in Royal Prince Alfred as she fights for government assistance for a bowel transplant – has been badly let down by the health system that should be helping her.

Pauline has been treated just as Australians would expect to be treated by their Socialist Government, she has been ABONDONED.

When you have socialised medicine the Government works on the fact that many,many of those requireing treatment will DIE before they make it to the "list" yes LIST, not the fricking operating table the bloody LIST,either from their medical condition or age.

Unlike hundreds of Illegal Islamic "refugees" who wash up on Australia's shores almost daily now since the Socialist Rudd government came to power in 2007,Pauline Talty is NOT able to access ANY of the "TENS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS " for instance,that has miracousily appeared to treat Middle Eastern Illegal immigrants, after they were badly burnt, after they voluntarialy set fire to their boat so as to ensure they were picked up by the Royal Australian Navy and taken to Australia's mainland,and take a seat on the Australian Labor Party's Islam, Refugee friendly, life time social security gravy train.
No expense has been spared for these criminals in treating them or providing them their every want and need so as not to offend their "Religious and Cultural sensitivities"

Last week, more than five months after she first applied to the Medical Treatment Overseas Program to travel to America, MTOP funding was rejected for a second time.

Nicola Roxon’s health chiefs in Canberra say Pauline doesn’t qualify because transplant treatment is available at a hospital in Melbourne where, I might add, not one bowel transplant has yet been attempted.

The advice of four medical experts that Pauline should undergo a transplant in America has been discounted.

Pauline Talty has been dudded in this process.

The plain fact is she should have been approved for overseas treatment months ago and the health department’s own documents clearly show that.

Pauline first applied for help last October.

In November, the department officials were told that “intestinal transplantation is not” currently offered in Australia – which should have led to a positive decision for her.

In January the department was told again “no intestinal transplant has been performed…in Australia”, yet an initial decision,

confirmed last week, was made to reject her MTOP application.

It appears to have been made on the basis that transplants could be carried out here in the future; Pauline was in effect being told she would have to wait for that day to come, even though she might die in the meantime.

There appears to be significant inconsistencies in reports before the department.

I think it’s outrageous! Pauline Talty should already be receiving treatment in hospital in America.

Minister Roxon needs to show some gumption. Get involved and turn this decision around.

Racism lessons planned for the under-5s

CHILDCARE centres could be forced to fly the Aboriginal flag and use "persona dolls" to teach youngsters about exclusion and ethical issues.

The guidelines are contained in a draft Federal Government program designed to help teachers deal with children aged under five.

Under the Early Years Learning Framework, childcare workers would be encouraged to teach the children in their care about a raft of social and ethical issues including reconciliation and racism.

Critics of the initiative, which claimed to make children socially responsibly for a "future world", yesterday said youngsters should be left alone to play.

"It is unnecessary and will cause enormous angst in the community," Opposition community services spokeswoman Pru Goward said yesterday.

"Let children be children. I have never heard of racism or discrimination (at a childcare centre).

"For goodness sake, they are three and four years old."

Ms Goward said most centres were good at teaching social inclusion and about Aboriginal heritage to peers at centres attended by indigenous children.

Psychologist, author and speaker Evelyn Field yesterday questioned the need for role modelling using puppets and dolls, instead preferring teachers "keep it simple through encouraging children to play together".

The political emphasis of the guidelines had divided early-learning experts.

Some, such as educational consultant Kathy Walker, yesterday questioned the merits of such issues being "rammed down the throats" of youngsters.

"Although I welcome the emphasis on play-based learning, there is an air of political correctness about the document overall," Ms Walker said.

Others, such as Kindergarten Parents CEO Victoria Meredith Carter, believed it was merely an attempt to "include and welcome all families to join in preschool and kinder".

In less controversial sections, the guidelines focused strongly on play-based learning, the importance of communication and language, the role of family in children's lives and social and emotional development.

PRIME Minister Kevin Rudd will be in his favourite place this week - that is, a long way from Australia.

In jetting off - again - he brings tomind the old joke that was told about former governor general and former foreign affairs minister Bill Hayden, and former prime ministers Paul Keating and Bob Hawke. In the routine, the three men were asked about their favourite sounds.


Hawke said it was an MCG-sized crowd cheering him, Keating said it was one of Mahler’s symphonies - and Hayden said it was the tinkling of ice as the drinks trolley rolled down the first-class aisle on a Qantas jet taking off for Europe.

The current Prime Minister could easily be substituted for Hayden, so long as no one mentioned alcopops.

Rudd leaves an Australia that, solely because of his Labor government’s policies, is going to suffer unnecessarily more grief in the current global fiscal stuff-up.

Australia had minimal exposure to the lunatic sub-prime mortgages that were introduced into the US as a sop to left-wing legislators from the Democratic Party, the Australian economy was in surplus when Rudd and his team of economic nincompoops came to office, Australia had a cushion in place that could have softened the reduction in international markets.

But Rudd and his neophyte economics team nominally headed by Treasurer Wayne Swan, but really run by Treasury head Ken Henry who has succumbed to the siren song of political power, have pulled all the wrong reins.

They talked down the economy when they should have been talking it up - but they were determined to attempt to smear the Howard-Costello team’s outstanding legacy in the process.
Inflation was the killer, they insisted.

It wasn’t. They were.

Now, as Kevin 747’s aircraft pumps out more carbon dioxide (thank goodness CO2 is good for the planet and essential for plant life and not the poisonous polluter Kevin claims it to be), his new IR legislation and his planned greenhouse bill will choke off Australian jobs.

But, as the advertisements used to say, there is more - however, in this case it’s not a nice set of steak knives. Rudd and his cohort have so depleted the nation’s savings that the federal Government is now planning to axe a central part of Labor’s health policy: the universality ofthe Medicare safety net.

Introduced by the Whitlam Labor government in 1973, the safety net has always enjoyed bipartisan support - until the arrival of the Rudd vandals in Canberra.

Rudd and his horde now wish to break that compact, despite a specific election promise backed by a flood of media statements he and current Health Minister Nicola Roxon both issued. In what will be one of the most disastrous attacks on the Australian families Rudd claims to champion, he will redefine who is rich and who is poor by introducing a form of means test at a time when household wealth is extremely transitory.

Families who save will be caught up in a pincer movement. If they safeguard their earnings to give themselves the security they desire in order to have children, they will find themselves too wealthy to benefit from Medicare.

Yet, when one member of the family stops working to stay home with their new children, their income will drop just at a time when they need to meet extra costs.

The chronically ill will be hit and unable to meet the cost of specialist care; the elderly will find themselves unable to get specialist care when it is needed, because of the lengthening waiting lists, and the younger people wanting to have families will find themselves excluded because both husband and wife work.

Under Rudd’s plan, hard-working couples would be denied the safety net because they’re too wealthy, but be able to access it once they’ve paid up - because they would then be poor.

It doesn’t make sense, any more than it does slugging self-funded retirees and removing them from self-sufficiency.

Particularly hit will be those families seeking to use IVF. This is no small percentage now. On the percentages, one child in every Sydney classroom is now the product of IVF treatment, which is responsible for the birth of 11,000 children a year.

When asked last week about his plans for cancer patients and young couples on IVF treatment, Rudd retreated into the meaningless gibberish he now resorts to whenever he is challenged in Parliamentary Question Time.

The closest the Rudd government has come to acknowledging its devious plan to dump the Medicare safety net came in the Senate when Queensland Labor Senator Joe Ludwig admitted that the National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission “will do more work on the safety net’’.
Labor is committed to destroying jobs during the current economic downturn, now it has revealed that the health safety net is no longer sacrosanct.

Parliament is now on holiday until the May Budget session but there are many serious questions that need answering.

Jobs, health, and the lack of a strategic plan in Afghanistan where 10 Australian soldiers have now been killed in the war Kevin Rudd wanted to fight, as opposed to the Iraq conflict, which he wanted to run from and leave our allies in the lurch.

Watch our Prime Minister duck the hard issues during his press conferences over the next six weeks.

It’s not personal, it’s just politics, but the only sound Kevin wants to hear is the ice rattling on the drinks trolley on his own jet.
