Two men injured in double-shooting in Merrylands

  •  Teenager Rhynal shot four times in stomach after being ambushed while attempting to purchase a mobile phone
  • Graeme Hunt, 62, was then shot in the chest after coming outside his home to investigate the commotion
  • Mr Hunt is currently in a critical condition in hospital

A 27-year-old man has been arrested and charged over the incident

A FATHER of two is fighting for his life after being shot outside his western Sydney home following a bungled armed robbery which also saw a teenager shot four times the stomach.

About 10.50pm last night 19-year-old Rhynal Nand and two friends had diven to Lansdowne St for a mobile phone transaction initiated on the internet only to be ambushed by a group.

One of the offenders got into the car with the teen and allegedly shot him four times in the stomach while three other offenders remained outside.

As the teen sped away in his car to a nearby service station the offenders drove up the street and were confronted by Graeme Hunt.

The 62-year-old interstate truck driver, who has lived in Merrylands for 30 years, was then shot in the chest with neighbors rushing outside to assist him.

A neighbour, who did not want to be named, said he saw the wound in Mr Hunt’s chest and attempted to keep him calm while his wife called Triple-0.

“I heard arguing down the street and then I heard about four to five gun shots,” the neighbour said.

“I looked over and I saw my neighbour laying on the floor. I run over and ask if he’s hurt, he thought he had been tasered and he was in a state of confusion.

“I agreed with him that they were taser shots but I knew they were gun shots. I looked at his chest at his upper right torso and I’ve seen blood and his shirt was ripped.

“I looked up the shirt and I saw a bullet hole.”

Neigbours today described Mr Hunt as “a gentleman who kept to himself”.

Another neighbour said Mr Hunt, an interstate truck driver who has lived in Merrylands for 30 years, was more concerned about not scaring her as he lay on the roadway after being shot. She said he was worried about making sure she was all right instead of being concerned about his own wounds.

“The gunshots were very loud,” the woman, who did not want to be named, said. “We were pinned down inside and stayed down until we heard the car speed off, it was very scary.

“I came out and I called Triple-0 and gave the phone to my husband and I said to Graeme ‘Are you ok?’ and he said ‘I’m okay, don’t worry’.

“He was speaking but he was in a state of confusion.

“He didn’t exactly know what was happening. He didn’t want us to worry about him.”

Police said the two injured men were rushed to Westmead Hospital.

Mr Hunt suffered a gunshot wound to the side of his chest and underwent surgery overnight. he is listed as being in a critical but unstable condition.

The 19-year-old suffered four gunshot wounds to his abdomen and arm and is in a stable condition.

Detective Superintendent Scott Whyte said the offenders made away with goods valued at only a small value.

“They’ve planned an armed robbery,” he said. “I’d act with extreme caution if I was asked to conduct a transaction in a residential street in the middle of the night.”

Det-Supt Whyte labelled the double-shooting a disgrace.

“I can tell you now we will be throwing every resource we possibly can to get these three outstanding - for want of a better term - grubs,’’ he said.

Police arrested a 27-year-old man and raided his home on Lansdowne St this morning. He is currently assisting police with their enquiries.

The arrested man’s father said he was asleep during the shooting and that police had taken his son’s clothes as part of their investigation.

“They took his clothes. I was sleeping (during the shooting),” he said.

Detectives from Rosehill Local Area Command and officers attached to Operation Talon have been tasked with investigating the shootings.

Operation Talon was formed in August last year to combat public place shootings in Sydney.

Indonesia to raise Australian asylum seeker policy with United States
ABC
By Helen Brown in Jakarta, staff

Indonesia says it will raise the Abbott Government's asylum seeker policy with the United States during official talks next week.

Jakarta has stepped up its protest to the Coalition's boat turn-back policy, calling in the Australian ambassador in Jakarta for a meeting with a senior official.

Indonesia's foreign affairs minister Marty Natalegawa says a strong protest message was given to Australian ambassador Greg Moriarty over the use of lifeboats to send asylum seekers back.

Dr Natalegawa says Australia was already violating its international commitments, but the use of lifeboats to send people back is an escalation.

"What Australia has been doing is a bigger development than before," he said.

"In the past when they have turned back the boats, or pulled the refugee boats back to Indonesia, that alone is a violation against their international commitment under the Refugee Convention.

"But this time it has escalated."

Dr Natalegawa told reporters Indonesia does what it can to stop boats leaving the country and that Australia's actions are "against the values of humanity".

He says he will inform US secretary of state John Kerry - who will visit Jakarta next week - about Australia's actions and let officials draw their own conclusions.

"There is no need to ask; we only need to inform it, and let America draw its own conclusion," he said.

Dr Natalegawa says he will discuss Australia's policy with other countries as well.

Afghani asylum seeker Mohammed Salem Nazari pleads guilty to two charges of indecent assault of seven teenage girls

Amy Dale Chief Court Reporter

AN asylum seeker who “traumatised” seven teenage girls by indecently groping them in the Sydney Olympic Park pool had only been in Australia for six months, a court has heard.

Mohammed Salem Nazari pleaded guilty at Burwood Local Court yesterday to two charges of indecent assault on two 18-year-old girls and five offences of indecently assaulting a person under the age of 16 at the pool.

The 33-year-old, who doesn’t speak English, assaulted the girls — the youngest aged 14 — in the Rapid River Ride whirlpool within 25 minutes on December 8.

The asylum seeker had recently arrived in Australia from Afghanistan and was on a bridging visa.

His lawyer told Burwood Local Court last year that Nazari was “a poor or non-swimmer” and only came into contact with the girls due to the current in the pool.

After initially pleading not guilty to the charges during an unsuccessful bail application late last year, Nazari reversed that yesterday and admitted all of the accusations.

Nazari required a Dari interpreter during all of his court appearances.

Police documents tendered to the court alleged he grabbed all of the girls around their waist, touching their thighs, bottoms and breast.

The girls reported the groping to pool security and they watched his movements on CCTV footage until the police arrived.

Nazari, who had been living in a unit in Parramatta at the time, was arrested and taken to Auburn police station.

Court documents said Nazari had been “nonchalant” about the accusations and insisted all of the contact with the girls had been accidental.

The charges of indecent assault and indecently assaulting people under 16 carry maximum jail terms of five and 10 years respectively.

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison’s office confirmed in December that Nazari’s visa had been cancelled and court papers said he was the “subject of an immigration hold”.

It came after a Coalition crackdown on asylum seekers and bridging visa holders in trouble with the law.

Under the previous government some asylum seekers remained in the community while facing charges with revocations considered on a case-by-case basis.

Nazari, who is from the Hazara ethnic group in Afghanistan, was the 31st asylum seeker facing criminal charges to have his bridging visa cancelled under the new rules.

He will be sentenced on March 3. It is expected he will be deported on the completion of his sentence.

Claims Australia is 'reachable' by Indonesia's air force as border stoush hits new lows

  •  Military presence in southern waters has been increased
  • Radar centres facing Australia are on alert
  • Air Force base in Makassar makes our country 'reachable'
  • Follows admission sovereign waters had been breached

INDONESIA has beefed up its military presence in waters off its southern border as military officials claim its air force is ready and that Australia is "reachabale" if there are any more border violations.

Indonesian military officials have today told the Jakarta Post its Navy warships, including frigates, fast torpedo craft and corvettes as well as maritime patrol aircraft, have been deployed to waters off its southern border.

Four Air Force defence radars have also been programmed to closely monitor the area.

"We are watching four radars in Timika, Merauke (in Papua), Saumlaki (Maluku) and Buraen (East Nusa Tenggara), which all face Australia," Air Force chief spokesman Air Commodore Hadi Tjahjanto told The Jakarta Post.

USA Germany Russia supply Tanks F16's, Apache attack helicopters and Submarines to Indonesia as Indonesia continues to demand Australia cease defending its borders from Indonesian based Insurgents / asylum seekers

If we notice any border violations, our air base in Makassar will be ready. Australia is reachable from there."

The Post said the base referred to was the Sultan Hasanuddin Air Force Base in the South Sulawesi provincial capital, home the 11th squadron of 16 Russian-made Sukhoi Su-27/30 Flankers.

The newspaper said the flankers have a maximum range of some 3,000 kilometers. The sea border lies some 1,000 km from Makassar. At Mach 1, or the speed of sound, the Flankers would reach the border in little over an hour.

Comment is being sought from Prime Minister Tony Abbott's office and the Australian Defence Force.

The developments come after Australia admitted last week it had accidentally breached Indonesia's sovereignty during asylum seeker missions in recent weeks.

Professor Damien Kingsbury from Deakin University told News.com.au: "Indonesia has always been pensive about its territorial integrity and Australia has played a role in that in the past."

"There's a sensitivity about that. If Indonesia did that to Australia we'd be very upset, if not more so," he said.

The Australian Government apologised to Indonesia after Navy vessels "inadvertently" breached Indonesia's territory "on several occasions" in recent weeks.

Australia's relationship with Indonesia has hit rocky waters recently, particularly because of the government's 'turn back the boats' policy and allegations from US intelligence whistleblower Edward Snowden that Australia spied on the country's president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, and his wife, Ani in 2009.

Professor Clive Williams, from Australian National University's Centre of Military and Security Law, hosed down concerns, saying it was just rhetoric that was good for Indonesia's politicians ahead of looming elections.

But he said Australia had blundered last week by admitting the sovereignty violations, which then demanded a response.

"It's probably good mileage for politicians in Indonesian to be extra nationalistic," he said.

"I would doubt whether they would follow through on that - it's very much for home consumption. The stupidity on our part was admitting we'd entered their waters. That was necessary on our part and has just created problems."

Indonesia threatens Australia, and demands Australia stop defending its borders from Islamic Insurgents. Yeah I know that's not what they said but that's what they mean.

Back off, Jakarta tells Australia

Brendan Nicholson and Peter Alford
The Australian

INDONESIA has demanded Australia stop its border-protection operations and warned it will strengthen warship patrols of its maritime borders, after Australian patrol vessels breached Indonesian territorial waters.

Sky News, Community TV,ABC,SBS, wannabees, salivating over what they see as a diplomatic gaff by Australian Conservative (Liberal) PM Tony Abbott as in securing Australia's borders as promised in his pre election promise to do so in the September 7 2013 Federal Election.

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison confirmed the territorial waters breaches, revealed in The Australian yesterday, and Australia's unqualified apology but he refused to confirm the violations occurred as Operation Sovereign Borders vessels forced asylum-seeker boats back to Indonesia.

The turn-back operation apparently started in mid-December, in spite of Jakarta's hostility to the strategy. Reportedly five boatloads have since been forced to return, though Indonesia only officially confirms two and Canberra refuses to acknowledge any specific case.

A spokesman for Indonesia's senior security minister warned the new incidents threatened attempts to repair the bilateral relationship, following the November revelation that an Australian security agency had mounted a spying operation in 2009 against President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, his wife and their political confidants.

"If they entered Indonesian waters like that, this will only worsen the situation and the relationship between Indonesia and Australia," said Agus Barnas, spokesman for Djoko Suyanto, Coordination Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs.

Indonesia plans to boost its naval presence where the Australian incursions happened, with a third frigate set to join the southern patrol.

"The government of Indonesia has the legal right to protect and defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity in accordance with international laws and the UN Charter," it said.

In "condemning and rejecting" the 20km marine border violations yesterday, Mr Djoko and Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa explicitly linked the Australian border breaches and the turn-back operation.

"Indonesia demands that such operations conducted by the Australian government that leads to these incidents be suspended until formal clarification is received and guarantees such incidents will not recur," he said.

The statement, which does not acknowledge Australia's "unqualified apology" for the incursions, was released following meetings with Dr Yudhoyono yesterday morning and phone consultation with Dr Natalegawa, who is visiting Myanmar.

Mr Morrison said yesterday that Foreign Minister Julie Bishop had been unable to convey Australia's apology directly to her counterpart on Thursday night because he was travelling.

Mr Morrison yesterday blamed "positional errors" for the incursions which he said were accidental. "I unreservedly apologise to the government of Indonesia for this," Mr Morrison said.

The Weekend Australian understands there were five or six breaches of Indonesian waters involving two vessels from the Royal Australian Navy and one from the Australian Customs Service, all operating under the control of Border Protection Command.

An investigation into the extent of the incursions, which vessels were involved and why and when they entered Indonesian water has been launched by Australian Defence Force chief, David Hurley.

It is considered unlikely that the crews of the Australian vessels were unaware of their positions given the sophisticated navigation equipment aboard them.

It is possible that the Australian vessels may have continued to tow or to escort asylum-seeker vessels to get them closer to a landfall on Indonesia either to ensure they made it there safely or to stop them turning back towards Australia or Christmas Island.

Tony Abbott, Ms Bishop and Mr Morrison have repeatedly assured Indonesia their boats strategy did not involve Australian vessels entering Indonesian waters.

Bill Shorten accused Mr Morrison of blaming the sailors to cover up flaws in the government's policies.

Operation Sovereign Borders commander Angus Campbell said he was advised of the breach on Wednesday afternoon after a routine report was examined by a border command official.

He said navy personnel did not know they had breached Indonesian waters at the time.

"I'm determined such events won't occur again," Lieutenant General Campbell said.

Malevolent shysters are damaging Australia / Australian Government Issues HIGH Degree of CAUTION for travel in Indonesia for Australian's

Malevolent shysters are damaging Australia

Andrew Bolt
Herald Sun
November 21,2013

WHAT self-serving, malevolent shysters - deliberately damaging Australia and blaming Tony Abbott for it. Who are these hypocrites who betray Australia, peddle a traitor's leaks and demand we surrender to Indonesia, just to destroy a Prime Minister they hate?

Blog all day with Andrew Bolt

Let's start with the clowns. On Tuesday, ABC managing director Mark Scott insisted the ABC was right to join the far-Left Guardian Australia in publishing secret intelligence stolen from the US National Security Agency by the American traitor Edward Snowden.

Scott said it was in the "public interest" to reveal Australia in 2009 monitored the phones of Indonesian leaders, even though he knew it would hurt his country.

"Yes, I appreciate that the release of some of this material might … cause some difficulties with the Australian-Indonesian relationship in the short term."

That is putting it mildly. These reports from the ABC and Guardian, revealing Australia monitored the phones of even President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and his wife, haven't just led Indonesia to formally downgrade our relationship.

Nor have they simply goaded Indonesia into threatening to withhold co-operation in fighting terrorists and people smugglers, potentially putting Australians in more danger and tempting more boat people to risk their lives at sea. They will also boost support for any anti-Western nationalists in Indonesia's presidential elections next year. God knows what that might cost us.

Scott airily waved all this away, but get this. The next day he discovered there was indeed one secret too damaging to publish: how much the taxpayer-funded ABC pays its star presenters.

Scott today raged at length about this terrible leaking of information the ABC fought for three years to keep secret.

"Payroll information should be confidential. It shouldn't leak!" shrieked the head of a news outfit that made serial leaker Julian Assange a hero. Why, this leak "puts us at a significant disadvantage to our competitors".

Can you believe this guy, who had no trouble publishing secrets that put his whole country "at a significant disadvantage to our competitors"?

But Scott's hypocrisy is trumped by the Greens'. In 1999, Greens leader Bob Brown was demanding an "international peacekeeping force" invade Indonesia, if that's what it took to free East Timor. But now? These same Greens are shocked - shocked - that we tapped the phones of Indonesian leaders and they cry crocodile tears at "the damage that the unregulated surveillance state is doing to our diplomatic relationships".

Are these people mad? Have they forgotten that Indonesia, today a democracy under a friendly ex-general, was only recently less benign and tomorrow might be again? Don't they realise the phonetapping in 2009 occurred only a month after yet another Islamist bombing, this one killing three Australians in Jakarta, when Australia needed to know how serious Indonesia was in tackling extremists? Of course, the Greens are simply adolescents in permanent revolt against Father. They are at heart irresponsible, not to be trusted with real power.

But what excuse is there for Labor leader Bill Shorten? On Tuesday he sided with the Greens, Fairfax journalists and extremist Islamist group Hizb ut Tahrir in demanding Abbott apologise to Indonesia.

"I believe, for instance, that the example of the United States in the way that it handled a similar issue with Germany provides the opportunity for us to consider the same course of action," he told Parliament. Shorten was referring to President Barack Obama's response to another Snowden leak, which revealed the US had monitored the calls of German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Obama - foolishly - rang Merkel to apologise and, his spokesman said, "assured the Chancellor that the US is not monitoring and will not monitor the communications of Chancellor Merkel".

BUT Indonesia is not Germany. And, if Abbott gives such a guarantee to Indonesia, he'll be under pressure to give the same to the leaders of Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia and whoever else demands one. And if the next Snowden leak shows us spying on Chinese leaders, what does Abbott do next?

No wonder two Labor frontbenchers are already back-pedalling. Tony Burke today refused to spell out what Shorten actually wanted Abbott to say to Yudhoyono: "I'm not going to add to the words Bill Shorten put forward."

Immigration spokesman Richard Marles was just as skittish, refusing to confirm whether Shorten truly wanted Abbott to say to Yudhoyono what Obama said to Merkel. So what the hell does Shorten really want?

I suspect it's to embarrass Abbott and sink his successful campaign to stop the boats - a campaign that relies on Indonesia's help.

The Fairfax media, mad with Abbott hate, is doing its best to help, seeming at times to blame Abbott for spying actually done under the Rudd government. Worse, Fairfax writers are virtually united in insisting Abbott give Indonesia the apology we cannot afford. Indeed, most are on Indonesia's side. Don't doubt that. Hatred of Abbott and his signature boats policy is driving much of this hysterical media coverage and damn the national interest. Hear it from Jack Waterford, of the Fairfax Canberra Times: "There are many people, including me, who want to see our shameful policies fail."

Hear it also from Richard Ackland, of the Fairfax Sydney Morning Herald, suggesting the Indonesian President sends an armada to topple Abbott: "Best way for SBY to respond to spying is to open the spigot on refugees. Put 50,000 on boats, point them at Oz. Goodbye Abbott."

The hypocrites. The scoundrels. And is it too much to say they've sold out their country?

We advise you to exercise a high degree of caution in Indonesia, including Bali, at this time due to the high threat of
terrorist attack. You should also be aware of the severe penalties for narcotics offences, including the death penalty; some specific health risks; and risks associated with natural disasters.

Pay close attention to your personal security at all times and monitor the media for information about possible new safety or security risks.
We continue to receive information that indicates that terrorists may be planning attacks in Indonesia, which could take place at any time.

Terrorist groups remain active throughout Indonesia despite police disruptions. Police continue to conduct operations against these groups and have stated publicly that terrorist suspects remaining at large may seek to attack Western targets.

You should exercise particular caution around locations that have a low level of protective security and avoid places known to be possible terrorist targets. See the Safety and security section of this advice for details.

Terrorists have previously attacked or planned to attack places where Westerners gather, including nightclubs, bars, restaurants, international hotels, airports and places of worship in Bali, Jakarta and elsewhere in Indonesia. These types of venues could be targeted again.
Local police advise that a demonstration is planned for outside the Australian Embassy on 21 November 2013 .

Australians should monitor local media, avoid protests, maintain high levels of vigilance and security awareness.

Australians should expect traffic delays and restricted access to and from the Embassy at the time of the demonstration.
You should telephone ahead for an appointment before going to the Australian Embassy (See Where to get help section).

Australians planning to participate in “Schoolies” events in Bali in November 2013 should see our Schoolies page for information for staying safe.
Indonesia is subject to a range of natural disasters including volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunamis and floods. You should pay close attention to emergency procedures and monitor local warnings.

Visitors to Indonesia, particularly to tourist locations such as Bali and Lombok, should be aware of the specific risks from crime, and from drink-spiking and consumption of alcohol adulterated with harmful substances such as methanol.

Tourists may also be exposed to scams and credit card/ATM fraud (see under Crime for more information).
Petty crime, such as opportunistic theft, is common in Indonesia. Thieves on motorcycles may snatch handbags and backpacks from pedestrians. Tourists may be exposed to scams and confidence tricks in Indonesia. Legal disputes are common regarding the purchase of real estate including land, houses, holiday clubs and time share schemes.

You should exercise normal beach safety behaviour and consider carefully the risks involved in using motorcycles, including licence and insurance issues (see under Local travel for more information).

Visitors should be aware that there is a risk of rabies throughout Indonesia, in particular Bali and Nias. See under Health for advice to Australians travelling to or resident in Indonesia.

We advise you to reconsider your need to travel to Central Sulawesi, Maluku, Papua and West Papua provinces where additional safety and security risks exist. Since October 2012, a number of violent incidents have been reported in Poso, Central Sulawesi.

Since July 2009, there has been a series of violent attacks in the area around the Freeport Mine in Papua province. A number of these incidents have resulted in deaths, including of one Australian. Attacks were reported in the area in March and April 2013. Further such attacks could occur. Information indicates that attacks may be planned near the area of operation of the Freeport mine.

Ongoing violence in Puncak Jaya District in Papua Province has led to a number of deaths in recent years, including most recently in February 2013 in Tingginambut and Sinak. There is a possibility of further attacks in Papua and West Papua provinces, including attacks on infrastructure and national institutions.

Because of the high threat of terrorist attack in Indonesia we strongly recommend that you register your travel and contact details with us so we can contact you in an emergency.

Say What !!!!
A MAN has been shot in the legs in the latest incidence of gun crime to sweep Sydney.

The 27-year-old man was found on the driveway of a home in Mona St about 6.15pm Monday.

He was taken to hospital and is now in a stable condition.

The scene became a site of sadness and worry for friends, relatives and neighbours as a man tried to run under the police cordon, but was stopped by officers.

He shouted, "That's my house" as he backed away.

A woman, possibly a relative of the victim, was seen breaking down outside the police cordon.

Karl Fayad, who lives in the same street, said he heard the incident.

"I heard two shots, and not five minutes later the cops just turned up," he said.

"It's terrible. It's not nice at all."

A woman at the scene, who did not wish to be name, bemoaned the violence.

"It is scary for people, kids, families," she said.

Police would like to speak with a man, described as between 20 and 25 years old and of middle eastern or Mediterranean appearance.

The man has a thin build with short black hair and a full beard. He was last seen wearing a navy blue hooded jumper and black track suit pants.

Hizb ut-Tahrir Australia conference hears 'this country at war' with radical Islam

A HARDLINE Islamic group has warned Muslims that the government was trying to "brainwash" their children and that they should resist any attempts to water down their strict view of Islam.

Pious Muslim cleric, Uthman Badar Warns Australian's it will be OUR fault if Muslims blow us up.

"The government is playing a dirty, dirty game," Wassim Doureihi told the 600-strong audience at the Hizb ut-Tahrir Australia conference in Lidcombe yesterday.

Hizb ut-Tahrir wants global sharia law. Yesterday in Sydney it launched a 124-page report on what it sees as Australian government attempts to divide the Muslim community into extremists and moderates.

"The fundamental objective of these policies is to change Islam, to secularise Islam, to produce a so-called 'moderate Islam': a state-sanctioned version of Islam that is secular, politically impotent and localised," it said.

Mr Doureihi warned the audience that it was "a war on Islam - a war that is being waged in this country as it is in the rest of the world".

Fellow speaker Soadad Doureihi warned: "This is truly a battle." He said the Australian government had "arrogantly" assumed that because Muslim youth "went to their schools and watch their TV shows" they would adopt "their values".

Because that did not happen, he said, authorities had instead moved to target young Muslims with sponsored leadership programs. "This is not a leadership course, it is a brainwashing course," he said.

Outside, about 20 Australian Defence League members waved banners and chanted: "Australians are welcome, terrorists are not" watched by police .

League president Ralph Cerminara said: "This (Hizb ut-Tahrir) is a terrorist organisation and it needs to be banned from Australia."

Inside people told how they had been approached by representatives of ASIO and the Australian Federal Police to inform on other members of their Muslim community.

"Know your rights," Wassim Doureihi said. "When ASIO calls the simple message is that you open the door and slam it on their face."

The organisers said the government was attempting to manipulate their community by providing funding via counter-terrorism and counter-extremism groups.

"Not only do you reject it, you spit on it because it is money that will be the source of your demise," Mr Doureihi said. "It's not engagement, it's entrapment."

Soadad Doureihi condemned the National Imam's Council and the Lakemba Muslim Association for taking government money that was "absolutely conditional" on producing a more watered down version of Islam.

Sheik Rian Wiramihardja said: "They are rewriting Islam to make it more palatable to Western tastes and we have to be aware of this."

The speakers called on those present to resist any attempts to moderate Islam.

Labor and its media mates fail to understand the new refugee policy

Andrew Bolt
November 18 2013

WHOSE side is Labor and its media mates on? The people smugglers or those trying to stop them?

Labor Green Loon's VOTE People

For two months journalists have attacked Immigration Minister Scott Morrison for not instantly telling them how and when boats have been intercepted, and who was on board.

Every press conference, it's the same tantrum. "Minister, are you hiding the boats, not stopping them? We're not being told when a boat is turned back."

On Thursday, the Senate backed the journalists, with the Greens and Labor demanding Scott release such information within 24 hours of each boat being intercepted.

He also had to reveal the passengers' nationalities and where they were picked up.

Yet the best military brains, past and present, say this information can only help people smugglers.

Which raises this suspicion: Labor and its media allies really want the Abbott Government to fail. Too cynical?

Two months ago the new Government started a military-led Operation Sovereign Borders to finally end the people smuggling Labor recklessly unleashed when it scrapped our tough border laws in 2008. Since Labor's criminally stupid decision - made to appear "compassionate" and cheered by the ABC and Fairfax newspapers - more than 50,000 boat people have arrived, more than 1000 have drowned and $11 billion of taxpayer money has been wasted.

After five years of faffing around, Labor in August - fearing decimation at the election - finally cracked down on the boats, by then arriving at a three a day.

And, yes, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's deal with Papua New Guinea to send new arrivals to Manus Island did have a big effect.

But Operation Sovereign Borders and other moves by the Abbott Government have cut boat numbers even more. In the past month, just three have arrived.

Clearly, whatever Sovereign Borders is doing works.

Senior journalists have for weeks raged over one aspect of the operation - a clampdown on information on what precisely is being done to turn back each boat. From their very first media briefing, Morrison and the Operations Sovereign Border head, Lt-Gen Angus Campbell, have explained that restriction.

Said Morrison in September: "Briefings will not be provided on tactical and operational matters that may compromise current or future operations."

Last week Prime Minister Tony Abbott added that the restrictions were necessary to make sure of co-operation from Indonesia.

"I don't want to engage in all kind of banter, which may or may not be good television, but which is not going to make it easier to have the kind of relationship with the Indonesian Government that we need."

Angus Houston, a former chief of the defence force and Labor favourite, last week backed this secrecy: "The military way of doing things is to operate with a high degree of operational security, to keep the people smugglers on the back foot."

And on Friday, Campbell explained in detail how people smugglers would love to have the information journalists and Labor demanded.

Knowing where our ships were helped the smugglers who wanted to avoid them, or those who offered customers early interception at sea.

Knowing our navy's tactics helped smugglers to beat them, and "has the very real potential to place responders, as well as passengers and crew, in danger".

What's more, "the official release of information about the nationality, gender, age and circumstances of passengers on-board vessels is also used by people smugglers to determine

with greater certainty which ventures have arrived".

That didn't just help smugglers "to claim credit for any intercepted vessel, to bolster their reputation and gain market share", Campbell said.

"The information about arrivals also leads to the release of final payments to people smugglers. Information protocols that disrupt cash flow, even briefly, cause difficulties for people smugglers."

New York Times journalist Luke Mogelson last week showed exactly how that worked.

Mogelson came over in September on a boat carrying Iranians, and said he'd paid the $8000 fee in Kabul to a money handler called Mohammad.

"Mohammad would withhold the money from his counterpart in Jakarta until we reached Christmas Island."

The people smuggler "would not get paid if our boat sank or if we drowned".

Labor now wants the Government to give out that evidence as soon as it can.

Do they demand police reveal all details of murder investigations - who's being bugged, which witnesses hold the key?

How stupid.

Abbott asked an ABC journalist badgering him last week: "You'd like to stop these boats, Leigh, surely."

Well, don't they?
