A surfer has told of his horror as he watched a five-metre white pointer shark repeatedly attack a teenage girl this afternoon on Tasmania's east coast.

The 13-year-old girl was surfing at Baileys Rocks at Binalong Bay when the attack happened.

Ian Hollingsworth was surfing 20 to 40 metres away and saw the attack, and the efforts of the girl's male cousin to protect her.

"It was basically a scene out of 'Jaws'," he said.

"The shark went around and I saw it actually come out of the water and hit her.

"It then went around, I believe I saw her going backwards, and she was screaming.

"The guy was just fighting to save her. All the time the shark was circling."

The girl has injuries to her lower right leg, but they are not believed to be life-threatening.

She has been flown to Hobart for treatment.

It's true there are more fricking Great Whites and Tiger Sharks now on the Australian East Coast than there were on the first day of creation!!!
I have seen these Bastards of things from my earliest of days (6-12 years of age, roughly ten or so years ago) of surfing on Sydney's Northern Beaches and in Queensland.

As a result of these Loon Nut Job Green / Enviro Nazi's any Australian living within 5 miles of the coast is constantly checking their Toilet Bowls for Great Whites and Tiger Sharks before they comfortably allow their arse to "rest in peace" before opening their favourite edition of Penthouse or Cosmo on the toilet seat to do the job at hand.

MORE than 4000 candles in white paper bags have been lit on the front lawn outside Parliament House in Canberra as part of a vigil against the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Religious leaders from the Islamic, Catholic, Anglican and Uniting faiths were also present to show their solidarity and support for peace in the Middle East region.

The paper bags were carefully laid out across the lawn to spell out both English and Arabic translations of the words, "Save Gaza Now".

The display's artist, Jorge Pujol, designed the Sorry, the First Step display after last year's historic apology to Indigenous Australians by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.

“The candle message is pretty much a silent message. It's a message of light,” Keysar Trad, from the Islamic Friendship Association of Australia, told the gathering.

“We are lighting candles to bring about light, dissipate this evil of destruction.”

The vigil concludes a day of protests in Canberra over the conflict.

ISRAEL’S Operation Cast Lead is unfolding like a familiar soap opera on the nightly news.

A series of Palestinian terrorists making blood-curdling threats against Israelis, a hail of missiles aimed at Israeli civilian targets, retaliatory strikes against the terrorists - who unfailingly seek to shelter behind innocent civilians - followed by scenes of weeping parents at crowded hospitals.

It is a plot line designed to soften the hardest heart. Unfortunately, those who buy the tear-jerking material unquestioningly are being duped.

No one, let alone a parent raised in a Western culture, could imagine placing children directly in harm’s way or encouraging impressionable infants to worship death but that is what the thugs and murderers responsible for the slaughter in Gaza have been doing.

It is an Islamist thing and Palestinian TV, often subsidised by the United Nations and European Union, is full of it.

In regular drama directed at kindergarten-aged children, children are taught that martyrdom is a beautiful state to aspire to, that suicide bombers are heroes and heroines and that even cartoon characters can sing and dance and murder their way into paradise.

Palestinian Media Watch and the Middle East Media Research Institute have been documenting this extraordinary perversion in recent years.

Among the scripts translated from Arabic is a cute story of the four-year-old daughter of female suicide bomber Reem Riyashi, shown singing to her dead mother and swearing to follow in her explosive footsteps. The video clip, aired on Hamas TV, depicts the little child asking her mother what she is carrying (it is explosives) and why she is putting on a hijab. All is made clear when the local newspaper (and headstone) reveals that mummy dearest was no soccer-mum but indeed a bomber-mum.

“Instead of me you carried a bomb in your hands. Only now, I know what was more precious than us . . . may your steps be blessed,” the little girl sings.

“Send greetings to our Messenger (Mohammed) and tell him: ‘Duha loves you.’ My love will not be (merely) words. I am following Mummy in her steps.”

At which point she finds some explosives her bomb-loving mum left in a drawer and picks up a stick, happily singing: “Oh Mummy, Oh Mummy.”

Don’t think this is some aberration. Abhorrent agitprop is the currency of Palestinian children’s television programming, with even cartoon characters depicting martyrdom as a highly desirable goal.

In a regular show on Hamas TV early last year, giant rabbit “Assud” replaced his brother “Nahoul” - a giant bee who had died after failing to get into hospital in Egypt for surgery.

Assud told his young audience: “We are all ready to sacrifice ourselves for the sake of our homeland. We will sacrifice our souls and everything we own for the homeland”, vowing also to “get rid of the Jews and eat them up”.

Regular viewers would recall Nahoul himself replaced “Farfour”, the Hamas mouse who was shown being “killed” on the show by an Israeli soldier in 2007.

As the young female host Saraa Bahoum told her audience: “Yes, my dear children, we have lost our dearest friend Farfour. Farfour was martyred while defending his land, the land of his fathers and forefathers. The martyred mouse was more likely a victim of copyright lawyers who saw too close a resemblance to Disney’s Mickey Mouse but that wasn’t in the script.

“Accordingly (Palestinians) created a human shield of women, children, the elderly and the Jihad fighters against the Zionist bombing machine, as if they were saying to the Zionist enemy: ‘We desire death as you desire life’.”

To ensure that the “death industry” doesn’t experience a slow-down, Hamas has placed its fighters in civilian homes, schools and hospitals.

It would be inhuman in the extreme not to feel sympathy for the children being used in this callous manner but it would be unintelligent not to ask why those who are exploiting them are not being called to account.

US bloggers are up in arms over former Australian Prime Minister John Howard "bumping" president-elect Barack Obama from an official government guest house in Washington.

Mr Howard will stay at Blair House the night before he receives the US Medal of Freedom from retiring President George W Bush next week.

Mr Obama has been forced onto the Blair House waiting list until January 15 when he and his family will move in, five days before his inauguration as president.

The Obamas requested an early move-in at the 70,000-square-foot, 119-room mansion across the street from the White House, so their children could settle in to start school this week, The Washington Post reported.

But the incoming first family was told the residence had been booked out, so they took a suite at the nearby Hay-Adams Hotel.

President Bush has been the main target for criticism from bloggers to political sites.

"George couldn't make this idiot stay at the Hay-Adams?'' was one of 146 comments to The Caucus blog at the New York Times.

"Isn't Blair House big enough for everybody? Bush was just afraid nobody would pay any attention to him with Obama in the house,'' another said.

Mr Bush was accused of favouring a mate over a political rival.

"What makes it worse is that this administration is once again going out of it's way to do little favours for their friends at everyone else's detriment,'' a blogger to the Watergate Summer site said.

But not everyone was against the decision.

Jack Moss, host of The MacRanger Show on Blog Talk Radio, is defending the decision, saying President-elect Obama should wait in line like "ordinary folk''.

"Obama has done diddly squat for the country, as opposed to John Howard who supported the US and our efforts on the war on terror while Mr Obama talked down our efforts and called our troopers rapers and pillagers,'' he said."This is most fitting.''

The British broadsheet The Times reported that Britain's former prime minister Tony Blair, who is also to receive the Presidential Medal, declined an invitation to stay at Blair House because he didn't wish to be "the man who bumped Obama''.

He was expected to bed down at the British Embassy instead, The Times said.

HAMAS leader Mahmoud Zahar has warned that Jewish children are now legitimate targets, in a bloodcurdling precursor to tanks rolling into the Islamic militant stronghold of Khan Younis yesterday.
Zahar's threat of retaliation, in his first comments since the Israeli campaign began 11 days ago, came before tanks, firing cannons and machine guns and supported by helicopter gunships, moved into the city in the southern Gaza Strip.

The pre-dawn operation to open a third front came a day after troops andHamas militants fought pitched battles in Gaza City, in the north - where four Israelis were killed by tankfire in two friendly-fire cases, and on the edges of the Deir al-Balah and Bureij refugee camps in the centre. "They have legitimised the murder of their own children by killing the children of Palestine," said Zahar, in a video recorded from his hiding place in Syria and broadcast on Hamas's al-Aqsa television. "They have legitimised the killing of their people all over the world by killing our people."

The warning, delivered late on Monday, suggested a new round of suicide bombings inside and even outside Israel to avenge the deaths of at least 159 Palestinian children, killed since the campaign to take out Hamas rocket teams began with airstrikes on December 27.

Defence Minister Ehud Barak said last night that the strip had been cut in half and that Gaza City had been surrounded. The death toll on both sides rose as diplomatic initiatives failed to make progress on halting the fighting in the enclave of 1.5million people. The incursion into Khan Younis's eastern district of Abassan al-Kabira was the first time Israeli ground forces had entered the city since they poured into the territory on Saturday night.

The armoured force was met in Khan Younis by return fire from Hamas and Islamic Jihad fighters. Artillery and airstrikes hit two UN schools in Khan Younis and Gaza City, one crowded with refugees, killing at least five people - bringing the Palestinian death toll since the campaign began to more than 580, of which the UN says a quarter are civilians.

In other pre-dawn clashes yesterday, fighting raged in the north around Jabaliya and Beit Lahiya, near Gaza City. In the eastern Gaza City district of Zeitun, a three-storey house belonging to a Hamas member with 30 people inside was destroyed by an airstrike. At least 12 people - seven of them children - were killed. They were all related. Despite the relentless air, ground and naval assault on their stronghold launched to stop rockets, a defiant Hamas continued to fire into Israel. One projectile travelled 45km, the deepest yet inside the Jewish state, lightly wounding a baby. Three others landed elsewhere without causing injuries.

Israel yesterday rejected separate ceasefire initiatives from French President Nicolas Sarkozy and the European Union, saying the 11-day offensive in Gaza was an act of self-defence that would end only when Hamas stopped firing rockets into Israel. Before a dinner with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Mr Sarkozy said: "We in Europe want a ceasefire as quickly as possible, and that everyone understands that time is running against peace. The guns must fallsilent." Mr Olmert told Mr Sarkozy: "The results of the operation must be ... that Hamas must not only stop firing but must no longer be able to fire. We cannot accept a compromise that will allow Hamas to fire in two months against Israeli towns."

President Shimon Peres was more blunt to the EU delegation. "Europe must open its eyes," he said. "We are not in the business of public relations or improving our image. We are fighting against terror and we have every right to defend our citizens."

The heaviest fighting so far occurred as Israeli troops clashed with Hamas fighters in the Shejaiya district of Gaza City. Palestinian medical officials say at least 110 people have died since the ground assault began, while Israel says it has killed 130 Hamas fighters. The Israeli army said three soldiers from the elite Golani Brigade were killed and 24 wounded in northern Gaza when their position was accidentally hit by Israeli tank fire. The brigade commander, Colonel Avi Peled, was lightly injured. The army said a paratroop officer was killed in northern Gaza, indicating he may have been killed by friendly fire. "The details of the event are still being investigated; however, it is suspected that a tank shell was mistakenly fired at the force," it said in a statement.
The death brought to five the number of Israeli soldiers killed since the army poured ground troops into the Hamas stronghold on Saturday.

The International Committee of the Red Cross said people were dying because ambulances could not reach them amid the fighting. A foreign doctor at a Gaza hospital, Mads Gilbert, challenged Israel's claim that Hamas fighters were being targeted, saying that by his count 801 children had been injured or killed.
Dr Gilbert told the BBC last night: "The numbers are contradictory to everything Israel says. This is the worst man-made disaster for the time I can think (of)." Mr Sarkozy had a blunt message for both sides: Israel could not allow the humanitarian situation to go on and Hamas's firing of rockets on civilians in southern Israel was "unforgiveable".
