Bolt Report Piers Akerman Maj Gen Jim Molan Australia up for grabs

Piers Akerman: Defence cuts are blowing apart our nation's credibility

Piers Akerman
The Sunday Telegraph
July 22, 2012 12:00AM

You know the advertisement - "even his closest friends won't tell him" - about the deeply personal problem of body odour?

Well, Australia's closest friend, the United States, is publicly telling us that we stink.

In an unprecedented display of candour, the US is saying bluntly that Australia is not pulling its weight on Defence and that the implications of letting down the side in this manner are enormous and long-ranging.

Department of Defence secretary Duncan Lewis was formally told of official US concerns at a painful meeting at the Pentagon on Tuesday.

In this weeks Bolt Report, Andrew Bolt speaks with Maj.Gen.Ret.Jim Molan, who makes clear Australia's perilous position when it comes to defence of the Nation under the Union / Getup funded Rudd/Gillard Labor / Green Loon "Independent" Minority Socialist
 "Co Party" Federal government.
He assured the Americans that the Gillard government was committed to building major defence capabilities, such as air warfare destroyers, joint strike fighters and amphibious ships but the US is voicing its doubts.

It believes the Gillard government has a serious credibility problem. It has a history of making worthy promises _ and breaking them _ and the US is just as aware of this history as the Australian voters who consistently reject Gillard Labor.

The former US deputy secretary of state Richard Armitage _ a great friend of Australia who was made a Companion of Australia, our highest honour, just two years ago _ issued the same warning earlier last week but there is no indication the Gillard government is listening.

The human face of the deceitful slashing of the defence budget is to be seen in the Gillard government's withdrawal in the last federal budget of the program under which single servicemen were provided with free flights home at Christmas.

In budgetary terms it's a small saving of $15 million in a budget of approximately $24 billion but 22,000 single men and women will no longer be given the opportunity to be with their loved ones during the holidays.

What is the Australian Labor Government spending OUR money on if not on the defence of our Nation ? listen to above interview between Alan Jones and opposition spokesman Greg Hunt.I am sure our declared enemies are grateful for the assistance of the Labor Green Loon Co Party Government in facilitating the disarmament of Australia
In its usual shift-the-blame manner, Labor argues that the cut was suggested by the secretary of Defence and that the benefit was no longer relevant. But Labor must take responsibility for the travel ban as it was Labor that slashed $5.5 billion from Defence spending in its vain attempt to produce Treasurer Wayne Swan's mythical budget surplus.

Liberal MP Stuart Robert, the Opposition shadow minister for Defence science, technology and personnel and Liberal Senator David Johnson, the shadow minister for Defence, have been dogged in their fight to have this benefit restored.

On Tuesday, June 26,  Robert tabled a disallowance motion in the House of Representatives which seeks to disallow or block Labor's policy.

Under the house rules, Labor has 15 sitting days from the date of tabling to respond. Four sitting days have passed with no movement from the government side.

Labor has a choice: do nothing and effectively permit the disallowance motion or stand up and defend its policy of cutting recreation leave travel.

So Labor has failed to address an issue that has created uncertainty and a loss of morale in the ranks.

The bigger picture demonstrates a problem of a far greater magnitude. Put simply, crucial forward spending has been postponed. The machine that produces the equipment and technology used by our fighting men and women has been mothballed.

There is no money to buy fuel for our ships and sailors need to be at sea.

There is no money for ammunition, and troops need ordnance to train to survive.

There is no money to develop the systems needed to combat the next generation of IEDs, the roadside bombs that smash our forward troops.

There is no none to replace barracks.

Then there is the impact on industry.

There is only one customer for the sort of sophisticated weaponry that has given our troops a critical edge in their work and the Labor government presented a big shopping list in its 2009 White Paper.

Companies were told to tool up and ramp up production to meet the needs of the armed forces.

Now Gillard and Swan have told the same firms to forget it.

The procurement plan has been slashed by 34 per cent.

The companies which invested can write off 34 per cent of their money, lose 34 per cent of their operations, staff and plant, or close.

As the Australian Strategic Policy Institute's Defence budget brief tells it, the Defence budget will fall in real terms by 10.5 per cent next year, the largest year-on-year reductions since the end of the Korean conflict in 1953.

As a result, Defence spending as a share of GDP will fall to 1.56 per cent, the smallest figure recorded since the eve of World War II in 1938.

Stop and think of the lack of preparedness for conflict then and the nations that took advantage of that wilful negligence.

To date, $10.6 billion worth of promised funding from the first five years of white paper has been deferred, $10 billion in savings has been cut from funding promised between 2011 and 2021 and another $2.5 billion of initiatives over the decade have been imposed upon Defence without funding or offsets.

No wonder the US is worried. The nation cannot turn on the Defence machine when its motor is rusted through lack of use.

Our men and women don't get the gear or the equipment they need and they don't get home.

There is always a price for these cuts but Labor is blindly slashing to protect a phony budget surplus for now meaningless political ends.

London on alert for terror attack ahead of Olympic Games

ISRAEL fears an Iranian terror squad in Europe are planning to attack their athletes during the London Olympics, according to reports.

Agents from Israel’s elite intelligence organisation, Mossad, are hunting Iranian-backed terrorists in Europe, who are allegedly planning an “anniversary” attack 40 years after the Munich massacre, Britain's The Sunday Times reports.

The fears come as tensions rise over the International Olympic Committee refusal to commemorate the killing of 11 Israeli athletes and coaches by Palestinian terrorists on September 5, 1972.

In preparation for an Olympic terror assault, panic rooms for VIPs and spectators have been set up beneath London’s Olympic Stadium to protect them from being taken hostage or killed, according to The Sunday Times.

The paper also claims that if an attack occurred on the stadium, security forces would “invacuate” key people, rushing them to safety inside the attack zone.

An estimated 50,000 VIPs will attend the Games, including a reported 140 heads of state, 200 government ministers, 100 royals and 150 members of the International Olympic Committee.

A ring of steel has been set up to protect the Games, including snipers on the stadium roof and lighting towers and airborne radiation detecting equipment.

While M15 and Scotland Yard have reportedly raised the threat level against Israelis at the Games, Israel’s security squad Shin Bet has also been sent to protect the country’s 38 athletes living at the Athletes Village.

Concerns of an attack on Israel were heightened by the suicide bombing of a bus in Bulgaria last week, killing five Israeli tourists and the Bulgarian bus driver.

A man – carrying American travel documents – exploded a bomb on board the tourist coach just hours before an Israeli cargo plane carrying elite security teams landed nearby.

The blast was reportedly revenge for the assassination of Iranian nuclear scientists, which Iran blames on Israel.
It confirmed intelligence Mossad had received that the Quds Force - Iran’s overseas hit squad – would use a suicide bomber disguised as a westerner.

The Israelis are now convinced the attack was a precursor to a bigger hit — with London’s Olympic Games as the suspected target, the paper claimed.

They allegedly believe Iran and Hezbollah, the militant Shi’ite Muslim group it arms and funds in Lebanon, plan to repeat the bloodshed of Black September.

The world watched in horror in 1972 when Palestinian terrorists scaled the fences of the Athletes Village in Munich and killed two Israeli athletes and took another nine hostage.

After German forces bungled an ambush at the military airport, the terrorists shot the athletes and threw a grenade into their helicopter to ensure they were dead.

A global campaign – backed by US president Barack Obama – has pushed for a minute of silence during London’s Opening Ceremony to honour the victims.

But IOC president Jacques Rogge rejected the proposals, saying that it was inappropriate to commemorate the deaths at the Olympics.

“We feel that the Opening Ceremony is an atmosphere that is not fit to remember such a tragic incident,” he told a press conference.

He added that some IOC delegates would attend a memorial on September 5 at the German military airport of Furstenfeldbruck where the killing took place.

“We are going to pay a homage to the athletes, of course, as we always have done in the past and will do in the future,” he said.

Indian Accused Of Rape Extradited To Australia To Face Charges

MELBOURNE – A 25-year-old Indian taxi driver, who is accused of raping a woman passenger two years ago in Australia, appeared briefly before a court here after being extradited from India.

Jaswinder Singh Mutta, who was extradited from India in January this year following his arrest by Indian police, appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court.
Mutta allegedly raped 26-year-old passenger in his taxi late at night in the suburb of North Fitzroy on January 17, 2010.

He was charged with two counts of rape and one count of indecent assault, according to The Age newspaper. Magistrate Jelena Popovic explained to Mutta that he had been brought before the court for a filing hearing.

Popovic said Mutta and his lawyer would be given access to the police brief of evidence against him by July 31. Mutta was remanded in custody for a committal mention on August 31. He did not apply for bail.

rape charges and one of indecent assault.

Melbourne: The 25-year-old Indian taxi driver, extradited on charges of raping an Australian woman passenger, had fled the country on a one-way ticket to India after committing the crime, a court was told on Thursday.

Jaswinder Singh Mutta, the first Indian to be extradited to Victoria, is facing two counts of
rape charges and one of indecent assault.

Mutta appeared in a Victoria court where it was heard that the cabbie fled to India on a one way ticket after allegedly raping his passenger. He left Melbourne on a Thai Airways flight on February 6, 2010 after buying his one way ticket.

In opposing Mutta's bail application in a Magistrates Court, senior investigative official, Shane Jenkins, unfolded the incident and informed that the alleged victim, who was 26, had met two girlfriends for dinner on January 17, 2010, and had been drinking wine throughout the night.
According to a report in 'The Age' newspaper, Jenkins told the court that the victim hailed

Mutta's taxi and asked him to take her home.
Jenkins said the woman vomited in the back of the taxi and Mutta told her she would have to clean it up.
Mutta drove her home and waited as she went to get a bucket of water and some cleaning products. As she was cleaning the taxi, Mutta pointed inside the taxi and said, "What about that?".
Mutta then forced the woman into the back seat of the taxi and raped her.
The official informed the court that Mutta at one stage told the woman, "Maybe I have AIDS", before saying, "Just joking".

Mutta, who came to Australia in December 2008 on a student visa, was interviewed by police on February 4 where he denied the rape allegations and refused to take part in an
identification parade or give a DNA sample.

Jenkins said police had seized Mutta's mobile phone which had two photographs of the
alleged victim. Mutta was released by police because of insufficient evidence at the time and next day he went to a flight centre office, and paid USD 975.59 for the one-way flight to New Delhi via Bangkok before flying out later that night.
Jenkins said a warrant for Mutta's arrest was issued after police found semen in the back of his taxi and in the victim's underwear.

Mutta was taken into custody by Indian authorities on January 5 this year before being
extradited. It was the first time an Indian national had been extradited to Victoria.

Navy capable of winning sea battle of wills

Piers Akerman
The Daily Telegraph

CLAIMS the Australian navy cannot turn back the boats are ridiculous.

Yet the ABC persists in trotting out retired defence brass hats to claim such work is dangerous or it is not the sort of work navy people like.

Well, boo hoo to retired Admiral Chris Barrie and former defence secretary Paul Barratt, who have ventured into these politically charged waters with a series of interviews in which they have given a clear indication why the Defence department has been such an easy target for gutting by the Labor-Green-independent government.

Barrie, who did not distinguish himself with his confused thinking during the children overboard affair, now asks: "Are we still playing a game where nobody's prepared to give anything on this issue and that leaves asylum seekers still in jeopardy?"

Barratt doesn't pretend to take a detached view. He takes the position that Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has no wish to solve this problem: "He wants to maintain it as a problem because he sees it as an election winner."But Abbott has said he wants to solve this problem and has proposed the reintroduction of measures that ended the lethal business of human trafficking under the Howard government. Those measures included turning back boats when possible and issuing illegal boat arrivals with temporary protection visas.

The US Coast Guard turns boats back to Cuba and the Dominican Republic on an almost daily basis. The Sri Lankan navy turns boats back. Our navy is more than up to the task, as distasteful as it may be.

In May 2004, I was aboard HMAS Stuart in the Persian Gulf when Captain Phil Spedding was routinely sending heavily armed boarding parties to inspect suspicious dhows posing a threat to shipping and offshore oil facilities. A week earlier, on the eve of Anzac Day, a flotilla of suicide craft had launched attacks on the crew of the USS Firebolt, killing three.

As I watched, the Stuart's two boarding craft William and Wallace swept off to a large dhow.

The boarding party was led by the Stuart's executive officer, Lieutenant Commander Michelle Miller, now Captain Miller.

Was the job dangerous? Yes. Was Lt-Cdr Miller capable of performing her duty as an RAN officer? You bet.

Only yesterday, a former human rights commissioner warned that hundreds, if not thousands, of asylum seekers will almost certainly drown on their way to Australia unless something is done to stop people-smuggling boats. In his submission to the federal government's expert panel on asylum seekers, Dr Sev Ozdowski said Labor's decision to wind back the Howard government's Pacific Solution and temporary protection visas created an undeniable pull factor for people trying to flee Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Iraq.

"If the current trend continues, boat arrivals for 2012 will be well over 10,000," he wrote.

"The increased boat people arrivals will almost certainly result in hundreds or thousands of people drowning on the way to Australia. This statement is not alarmist - it will happen."

On Wednesday, the sixth illegal boat with some 65 people aboard arrived in just three days - taking the total number of undocumented arrivals since Labor wound back the Coalition's border protection policies in 2007 to nearly 21,000.

The government's panel is due to report before parliament resumes next month but the government's alliance partners, the Greens, have already sent in a submission at odds with Labor's proposed Malaysian Solution and Labor has warned it will not necessarily support the panel's recommendations.

As opposition immigration spokesman Scott Morrison said: "Not only have Labor sought to distance themselves from their own expert panel by reserving their position on its recommendations, they remain at war with their alliance partners on the committee they set up to solve the problem."

More than 131 boats carrying nearly 9500 undocumented people have arrived since the Malaysian Solution was announced on May 7, 2011. Under the swap-and-release proposal, Australia would have sent 800 asylum seekers to Malaysia and received 4000 in return.

The High Court killed the plan stone dead because the government could not guarantee the security of those sent to Malaysia, which is not a signatory to the UN Convention on Human Rights - a basic requirement once insisted upon by Labor. The plan was meant to be a one-off and act as a deterrent but there is no indication it would have succeeded.

On the other hand, if Labor had not dismantled the Howard government's border protection regime, people would not have died at sea, more than $1 billion would have been saved, the Christmas Island detention centre would be mothballed and naval and customs officers would have been freed to get on with other duties.

Thomas Kelly: Funeral and Court Round up

Thomas Kelly farewelled by family and friends at former school

Clementine Cuneo and wires
The Daily Telegraph
July 20, 2012 12:44PM

THOMAS Kelly was a determined, courageous young man whose life was cut tragically short, his father has told mourners at a funeral service in Sydney.
Ralph and Kathy Kelly held the hands of their younger two children Stuart and Madeleine, as they walked into The Kings School chapel for the funeral service.

Hundreds of people gathered in and around the chapel to say goodbye to Tom, 18, who was killed in a Kings Cross attack almost a fortnight ago.
Kieran Loveridge, 18, has been charged with murder.
"Thomas was a courageous boy in both his life and his death,'' Mr Kelly  told the service.
"The more I knew him the more I was in awe of his sheer determination.''
Mr Kelly also read out his son's final email, sent on July 6, the night before he was fatally attacked.
Thomas wrote that he was going to have an early night on Friday, July 6 because he wanted to save his energy for the next evening.
"Na, I'm not going out tonight,'' the teenager wrote to his father in the email.
"I might be back a little later - just stay for a drink - but want to have an early night and enjoy tomorrow instead.'
Mr Kelly said his son also spoke about what he was going to have for dinner that evening and about sorting out a tax form.
"I will treasure those last written words to me written from my son,'' Ralph Kelly continued.
"Thomas did in fact go out that Friday night, he spent some time with his good friends from Mosman playing pool at The Oaks (pub) in Neutral Bay. 19 7 12 Thomas Kelly 4
"In hindsight I'm very glad he got to spend some time with his good friends that evening.
"He would have spent his last night happy.'
Mr Kelly said the days since his son's death had been an emotional rollercoaster.
"It's still difficult to believe Thomas will not be coming home again,'' he said.
"I don't think th e reality has yet set in. We still talk about Thomas in the present tense.
"Each night we turn on his bedside lamp and say a prayer.''
The Reverend Stephen Edwards said it wasn't long ago that Thomas Kelly was sitting in the chapel where his funeral was taking place.
"It was was the last thing on our minds that we'd be returning so quickly to farewell one of our own,'' he said.
"Our compassion and our hearts go out to Thomas's family.
"To Ralph and Kathy, to Stuart and to Madeleine.''
Other speakers touched briefly on the violence that led to Thomas's death and the pain it had caused.
His father said today's service is about "remembering our son, and how much he meant to us".
Tom only graduated from the school last year. His brother Stuart is in Year 9.
There was a strong police presence at the service.
The Kelly's requested today be "all about Thomas", not about the horrific circumstances in which he died.
"We want to celebrate his life," Mr Kelly said.

Thomas Kelly: Parents speak of their Son's Murder.

Rev Edwards said Tom had just started to settle into life. He was happy with the world and "blossoming", when he tragically died on June 9.
He said it was a privilege to have Tom's farewell at his old school.
"Only a short while ago Tom sat in this very chapel with his year 12 cohorts...and looked forward to what life had in store," Rev Edwards said.
A brave and strong Mr Kelly told of the pride Tom brought him everyday.
"I frequently told him over the past few months that Kathy and I were so proud to be his parents," he said.
He remembered living in Sydney during the week with Tom, while they both worked there, and listening to his son's alarm go off at 6am every day.
"Despite my protests, he would always ignore it."
But he said it was during those months, he became so much closer to Tom, and they reconnected after Tom's three years at boarding school.
"At night we'd spend time talking about his life and friends," he said.
"He was a tremendously loyal friend...always respectful of others."
"Tom had bundles and bundles of talents. Music, drums and guitar. We frequently had his music fill our house."
He told mourners he got an update this week of the four patients who had recieved his son's organs.
"Thomas lives on in the four recipients of his organs, and the future babies who will receive his heart valves," Mr Kelly said.

Kieran Loveridge, 18, was arrested last night over the murder the 18-year-old Kelly in the nightclub hub of Kings Cross on July 7.

A FOUR-day sweep of 58 pubs and clubs in Kings Cross began last night, with government inspectors called in to ensure they comply with the law.
Detectives believe Loveridge may have punched a man in "a similar fashion" minutes before he allegedly king-hit Kelly.

Loveridge then allegedly went on to hit another two men within the Kings Cross area in the space of three hours, according to police.
Loveridge sat with his head down in the dock, displaying prominent neck and arm tattoos during a brief appearance in court this morning.
He didn't apply for bail, but his lawyer said the 18-year-old would make an application for release next Wednesday.
Around a dozen friends and family were in court to support Loveridge, who will remain in custody until at least next week.
Acting Assistant Commissioner Mal Lanyon said investigators had worked tirelessly in reviewing CCTV footage and information from the public over the incident.
"It was physical force used in each of the three incidents outside Mr Kelly and not dissimilar in nature," he said.
"There was an assault on a male sometime shortly before the assault on Mr Kelly and subsequent to Mr Kelly's assault there were two further assaults several hours later in the evening."

Officers have also seized a number of items from a home in Seven Hills, in Sydney's west.
Mr Lanyon said police would continue to investigate the matter.
Homicide squad detectives arrested him at a Belmore sports field about 7.30pm last night.
He was interviewed at Campsie police station by strike force Mohawk detectives.
Just before midnight he was charged with one count of murder.
Loveridge was also charged with three counts of assault relating to separate alleged attacks the same night.
Police allege Loveridge, who turned 18 on March 9, king-hit Mr Kelly about 10pm on July 7 as he walked with his girlfriend on Victoria St, in Kings Cross.
A police source said Loveridge was also in the Cross for a big night out.
Mr Kelly, of Bowral, suffered critical head injuries. Two days later, in St Vincent's Hospital, his parents Ralph and Kathy made the heart-breaking decision to turn off his life support.
Two more people were also allegedly assaulted on Roslyn St in the Cross, where Mr Kelly was hit.
Loveridge had been at Belmore Oval watching a friend play football, although reports emerged last night that he had been watching a training session of the Canterbury Bulldogs.
He was handcuffed and taken from the ground.
Sources said that while Loveridge spoke with police as he was being driven to the station, he declined to be interviewed.
Mr Kelly finished high school at The King's School last year and had an accounting cadetship while also studying commerce at Macquarie University at night.
Mr Kelly's shocking death has also led to an urgent review of safety along the notorious Golden Mile.
Gambling Minister George Souris ordered a four-day compliance blitz of 58 late-trading pubs and clubs.

The operation, which started on Tuesday, aims to assess the effectiveness of security, surveillance and incident reporting.

Carbon tax compo being gambled away

Pokie revenues surge in May and June
Increase coincides with carbon compo payments

Julia Throwing money HANDOUTS to low-income workers under the carbon tax scheme have led to a surge in pokie revenues in May and June, according to The Australian Financial Review.
Pokie revenues in Queensland rose more than 7 per cent in May and 12 per cent in June which coincided with the Federal Government’s handout of more than $15 billion in carbon tax compensation to pensioners and low-income earners.
Although other states have yet to release official gaming machine revenues for June, the AFR reports that in lower socio-economic areas of Victoria such as Bendigo they rose by 8.6 per cent, which is 7 per cent above the state average.
18 7 12 CO2 Tax 1 Other poker machine operators such as Coles and Echo Entertainment have also seen a jump in pokie revenues since the carbon cash injection was given.
The new figures have led to calls by anti-gambling campaigners for carbon compensation to be given in a different form other than cash.

Stephen Mayne, an independent candidate for the Melbourne by-election this weekend, said it would be better to give the carbon tax compensation in the form of credits at a consumer’s power company.
Nomura gaming and retail analyst Nick Berry said carbon tax payments would continue to the end of July, boosting retail sales and gaming revenue. But when the first power bills arrive at the end of September, most of the carbon compensation will have been spent.
Keith DeLacy, chairman of the compliance, audit and risk committee at the Reef Hotel casino in Cairns, told the AFR that casino revenues have always increased when cash handouts were delivered.
"All it is showing is that people have increased disposable income and that’s what they’re spending it on,” he said.
“Governments have got to accept if they give straight cash handouts to the population at large they can’t dictate how it must be spent as well. I mean, how far can you take the nanny state?”
