Authorities suspect the store in Victoria's Dandenong is one of six shops in the same street being used to send money to people smugglers overseas, The Weekend Australian reports.

Federal police and members of the local community believe the store is owned by relatives of convicted people smuggler Haji Sakhi, who was deported from custody in Indonesia to Pakistan earlier this year, according to the report.

One of the store's owners, Ali Ashgar, reportedly denies both the relationship with Mr Sakhi and any involvement in people smuggling.

The other owner, Juma Khan Karimi, could not be reached for comment, the newspaper says.

Sakhi is believed to be involved in people smuggling activities dating back to 1999.

A BRITISH court has found a Pakistani-born couple guilty of murdering their "westernised" teenage daughter in an apparent honour killing.

Iftikhar Ahmed, 52, and his wife Farzana, 49, were both found guilty of murder at Chester Crown Court in Cheshire, north-west England, after suffocating their 17-year-old daughter Shafilea in 2003.

In a high-profile case, Shafilea's sister Alesha had told the jury her mother had said: "Just finish it here," as they forced a plastic bag into Shafilea's mouth in front of their other children.

Iftikhar Ahmed stood impassively as the verdicts were given, while his wife wiped tears from her eyes with a tissue.

They were due to be sentenced later.

Three of their children also broke down in tears as they watched from the courtroom.

Shafilea had disappeared from the family home in the town of Warrington, near Chester, in September 2003, and her body was found five months later on a riverbank in Cumbria, north-west England.

Prosecutors said the couple murdered her because they felt her "western" habits, such as wearing make-up and talking to boys, had brought shame on the family.

The court heard that Shafilea had run away from home and asked the local authority to provide her with emergency accommodation, just before she was drugged and taken to Pakistan in February 2003 to be forced into a marriage.

In a letter to social services, she said she had suffered from regular domestic violence since she was 15.

"One parent would hold me whilst the other hit me," she wrote. "I was prevented from attending college and my part-time job."

Her main reason for running away was that her parents "were going to send me to Pakistan and get me married to someone," she added.

Iftikhar Ahmed, a taxi driver, denied the murder and said Shafilea ran away from home.

His wife also denied the killing, but told the jury she saw her husband beating Shafilea and believed that he killed her.

It is a lie that will not die. It has been sent to tens of thousands of Australians in an email that has been circulating for years. The latest variation compares the amount paid to Australian aged pensioners with the benefits available to refugees. It claims the weekly allowance for pensioners is $253 while the weekly allowance for refugees is $472.50, plus a weekly hardship payment of $145, meaning refugees are eligible for more than twice as much government support as pensioners. It's a concoction. The problem for the federal government is that the truth is in some ways worse than the lie.

As long ago as 2009 the Department of Immigration felt compelled to issue this press release: ''Figures quoted in these emails bear no resemblance to income-support payments to asylum seekers and refugees settling in Australia … Asylum seekers in Australia who have not yet had their protection claims decided have no access to Centrelink benefits.

''Irregular maritime arrivals are subject to thorough security and identity checks and must satisfy the character test before a decision is made about protection … In Australia, refugees granted permanent visas have access to benefits on the same basis and at the same rates as other Australian permanent residents.''

Things have loosened up since then. Some asylum seekers now do qualify for welfare before their claims have been decided. The system of ''thorough security and identity checks'' has been compromised. This has damaged the federal Labor government, damaged the reputation of the Prime Minister, and damaged the traditional links between blue collar workers and the Labor Party. It has inflicted as much political damage on Labor as the carbon tax about-face.

In trying to understand the persistently dreadful opinion polls for the Gillard government, I keep coming back to this issue, a policy debacle for which Kevin Rudd, not Julia Gillard, bears primary responsibility, though on her watch it has gone from embarrassing to potentially terminal.

What follows are half a dozen elements that are already of concern to the Australian Federal Police, but about which the AFP must remain mute:

The police have not seen as large a gap in quality control in the flow of unskilled and welfare-dependent arrivals since the refugee flow from Lebanon in the 1970s.

About 90 per cent of those who arrive via illegal boat entries have been granted permanent residence, yet the overwhelming majority have entered Malaysia or Indonesia by legal means, then destroyed their identity papers with the intent of making it difficult for Australia to check their bona fides.

The amount of workplace participation among refugees and asylum-seekers remains low for some time. After four years, only about 25 per cent are engaged in full-time work. (The issue is examined in a Department of Immigration report, Settlement Outcomes for New Arrivals, published in April last year.)

Under intense political pressure, the federal government is emptying the detention centres by issuing bridging visas which allow detainees to enter the community, work, and receive welfare benefits before their final status has been determined. This has slashed the average time spent in detention from nine months to three months but the quicker turnover has compressed the scrutiny process.

Some of the high take-up of welfare payments among asylum seekers and refugees is being recycled into bringing relatives to Australia, including via people smugglers.

The Royal Australian Navy is being used as a pick-up service by people smugglers who call navy vessels to advise them of their need for assistance.

Little wonder that numbers are exploding. In the three years before the election of the Rudd government, 71 people arrived on 10 illegal boats. It took a year for the impact of Labor's dismantling of the previous border security regime to kick in. Over the past three years 341 illegal boats have brought 20,248 asylum-seekers. Another 363 have drowned. Uncounted others have perished or turned back.

All these problems are personified by ''Captain Emad'', who fled Australia in June even though he had been under investigation by police. The man, Abu Khalid, was a people smuggler who came to Australia by passing himself off as an asylum seeker. He brought his wife, three children and a grandchild. All received refugee status, settled in Canberra and were provided with public housing despite using different identities to those they used to enter Indonesia from Iraq. Yet even after Khalid's activities were exposed by the ABC's Four Corners program, he was allowed to leave.

Systemic deceit has been rewarded by systemic support. Even some asylum seekers who have avoided immigration control, destroyed their identity documents and not yet had their claims decided are eligible for support under the Asylum Seeker Assistance Scheme.

Among the benefits that can be made available to those granted protection visas, and those granted refugee status, is a one-off household formation package of up to $9850. Families can be eligible for education assistance of up to $9220. People granted refugee status become eligible for welfare payments immediately without having to wait the two-year period set for immigrants. Single applicants are eligible for a Newstart Allowance. Parents are eligible for Centrelink's parenting payment. Refugees, and some on bridging visas, also receive Medicare assistance for medical, hospital, dental, medicine and optical costs. Mobile phones are provided to those who arrive as unaccompanied minors.

This is the honeypot that has combined with civil strife to cause entire villages to empty in Sri Lanka and thousands of young men to travel from Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran and Pakistan to get on illegal boats to Australia.

The viral email about Australia's generosity to refugees may be wrong in its details, but the truth is a story of government gullibility without end.

Its time the Australian connections within the Union GetUp funded Labor / Green Loon / Independent "Co Party" Government are rounded up and charged with treason.Aussie.

Police face legal minefield in deciding on Ashby investigation

QUEENSLAND police are negotiating a legal minefield to assess whether to launch a full criminal investigation into a complaint by stood-aside Speaker Peter Slipper that the former staffer pursuing him for sexual harassment had sex with two underage males nine years ago.

In Queensland, sex with minors is an offence carrying a maximum of 14 years in jail, but police have received only a "third-party" complaint from Mr Slipper about his former aide James Ashby's alleged dealings.

The Liberal National Party turncoat wrote to Queensland Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson in late June to relay the claims about Mr Ashby's alleged sexual relationships with two
15-year-olds in Townsville in 2003, when Mr Ashby was 23 and well before he had met Mr
Slipper.

Police are now trying to discover whether the two young men at the centre of the allegations want to make a complaint against Mr Ashby, who filed a politically explosive sexual harassment claim against Mr Slipper in April, forcing him to step aside from his parliamentary duties as
Speaker.

ABC TV's 7.30 program reported that one of the young men had contacted Mr Slipper and
complained of feeling "used and disgusted" by his short-lived relationship with Mr Ashby. Mr Slipper reportedly urged the young man to contact police, but ended up doing so himself.

Mr Slipper did not respond to The Australian yesterday. Mr Ashby's media spokesman also
declined to comment.

Tony Abbott insisted the allegations against Mr Ashby were a "matter for police" and it was up to them to investigate and take "appropriate action".

Queensland is the only Australian jurisdiction with different ages of consent for different
sexual acts. A person must be 18 to engage in sodomy, or anal sex, but only 16 to engage in
other sexual activity.

A spokesman said Queensland Police Service was "in the process of determining whether any person authorised to do so wishes to make a complaint and if that is the case whether there is the evidence to support any prosecution". "We will advise in due course the outcome of that investigation."

The spokesman told The Australian police could pursue a matter without a formal complaint from a victim, but said it was "a grey area".

Anti-child abuse advocate Hetty Johnston said third-party referrals of sexual crimes were of "minimal use" without a complaint from the alleged victim.

The Bravehearts founder said Mr Slipper was using a serious allegation as a "political football".

"It's a political red herring and it damages the credibility for survivors everywhere that make genuine complaints," she told The Australian.

Even if a complaint is received, lawyers say prosecutors have wide discretion about whether to take the matter to court.

Top Queensland criminal lawyer Bill Potts said prosecutors would weigh up the chances of a conviction and whether such a prosecution would be in the public interest.

"The attitude of the victim, whether there's a complaint, witnesses, the degree to which
there's a differential in age and power (between the offender and the victim), and the
reasons behind promulgating the complaint would be all factors," he said.

He said prosecutors took a hard line when the alleged offender was in a position of power and influence over their victim, for example in a relationship between a teacher and student.

Wayne Swan said allegations that Mr Ashby had sex with minors were extremely serious.

"They are going to be investigated by the authorities," the Treasurer said, adding that the
criminal allegations should be dealt with separately from Mr Ashby's sexual harassment suit
against Mr Slipper.

Trade Minister Craig Emerson said Mr Ashby should be entitled to the presumption of
innocence and the probe should occur without interference.

FORMER ABC presenter Andy Muirhead has pleaded guilty to three charges relating to child pornography in the Tasmanian Supreme Court.

The court has been told that Muirhead used peer-to-peer software to access more than 12,000 picture files and 24 videos.

Prosecutor Maitland Lincoln said Muirhead had changed software after reading articles about a child pornography ring busted by police in May 2010.

The ages of children depicted ranged from three to 14 and at least 60 were in the worst category, showing the explicit or sadistic treatment of children.

Muirhead looked down as graphic examples of the images and videos were played to the court.

He had previously pleaded not guilty to the charges.
His plea hearing is set to continue this afternoon.

Julia Gillard has eclipsed the previous record she shared with Kevin Rudd for the highest number of people arriving on illegal boats in a year, with the latest arrival of another 49 people, Shadow Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Scott Morrison and Shadow Minister for Justice, Customs and Border Protection, Michael Keenan said today.

“In an unprecedented year of policy failure on our borders, 6,899 people have arrived on illegal boats just seven months into this year, compared with 6,889 who arrived under Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard as Prime Minister in 2010,” Mr Morrison said.

“When Julia Gillard knifed Kevin Rudd she claimed his government had lost its way and nominated border protection as his worst crime and yet over 15,000 people have now arrived on boats on her watch,” he said.

Shadow Immigration Minister Scott Morrison on the latest arrivals, which have contributed to 2012 being a record year -- and it's only July.

 “Since Julia Gillard took office she has given us the East Timor farce, the failed and immoral Malaysian people swap, unwound the last bricks in the wall of the Howard Government's strong measures by giving boat arrivals bridging visas, works rights and access to endless appeals in the courts and all the while has refused to reinstate the Coalition’s proven policies to stop the boats.

“These unprecedented numbers have exposed the gaping holes that Labor have created in our border protection system and have made the job of our Border Protection Command all the more difficult.

“Until there is a change in Canberra and an end to the Labor-Greens governing alliance, the boats will keep coming and the records will keep breaking,” Mr Keenan said.

AN Islamic school in Sydney's southwest has been ordered to pay back $9 million in public funds after it was found to be operating for profit, the NSW government says.

Education Minister Adrian Piccoli says he has written to the Malek Fahd Islamic School in Greenacre ordering it to repay the funds following a random audit.


"Any school found to have operated for profit will have been deemed to have used their funds inappropriately and in that case I have an obligation as minister to recover those funds," Mr Piccoli told reporters in Sydney in Tuesday.


"For any period that it operated for profit ... any taxpayer funds given to it will be recovered by the NSW government."


The school owed $9 million, he said.

The Artesian Range in the remote Kimberley region of Western Australia has been dubbed a ‘land that time forgot’. Its hidden valleys and canyons have remained virtually untouched by modern civilisation, leaving a haven for some of the most fragile of our country’s small mammals.


It’s perhaps the only place in Australia where not one species of mammal has gone extinct since European settlement.


There’s been a catastrophic decline in small mammals across northern Australia in recent decades.


According to independent studies, even in the showcase Kakadu National Park small mammal populations have declined by more than 75% in the last 15 years. Now, the same threat faces the Artesian Range, until now a last-stand refuge for rare creatures like the Golden Bandicoot and Northern Quoll, which have disappeared from Kakadu.


Reporter Alex Cullen travelled to the remote Range with the small, passionate band of conservationists from the Australian Wildlife Conservancy who are helping these animals stave off extinction. Controlled burns, wildlife tagging and monitoring of feral cats are all part of the strategy to keep these vulnerable populations thriving.

AWC chief scientist Dr Sarah Legge showed Cullen the contents of one feral cat’s stomach - seven native animals from one night’s catch. With an approximate two million feral cats loose in Northern Australia, this equates to 14 million native animals killed by feral cats every single night.

The cats often use wildfires as a hunting tool, stalking the outskirts of a fire and pouncing upon native animals as they emerge from the flames. But Legge, AWC chief executive Atticus Fleming and their team are outsmarting the feral animals, using a painstaking system of controlled burns early in the dry season. The small, scattered fires they create leave plenty of cover for the native creatures to evade marauding cats.

LAURYN Mark, frustrated and running out of time, broke down after her first practice shoot in London.

It came just hours after she read Eddie McGuire's column accusing her of indulging in "soft porn".

McGuire also criticised husband Russell Mark over his fight with Shooting Australia after he was denied permission to room with his wife during the Games.

Then too many missed shots on the range to top it off, and it all unravelled.

"I'm sorry," a weeping Lauryn said. "Can we do this in 10 minutes?"

She barely got the words out.

Russell Mark refutes McGuire's "soft porn" allegation.

Ten minutes later she was back, apologising, and saying her frustration was the result of the looming Olympic deadline and poor form.

"You can do all the hard work and when things don't go according to plan you start panicking a bit," she said.

She was also dealing with McGuire's comments after she appeared in a bikini spread in this month's Zoo Magazine.

"I wasn't exactly impressed with the article," she said.

"I consider him a person that I have always thought a lot of and I respect his opinion and, probably, most of the Australian public feels the same.

"To have him write and article that didn't depict us in a positive light is a little bit hurtful. I just hope he understands that we do dedicate ourselves a lot to our sport and because we have an opinion or talk about our sport we're not bad people."

Russell Mark is keen to distance himself from the controversy - "I lost that battle, didn't I," he quipped - but also expressed his disappointment with McGuire's comments.

"I'm a bit disappointed in Eddie," he said.

"I really feel sorry for Lauryn. He called her a soft actress or something, that's bit of a low blow."

McGuire wrote: "(Russell Mark's) American-born Olympian wife, Lauryn, posed for the Zoo Magazine in what sounds like a soft-porn photo shoot."

Mark said he was disappointed his argument pointing out gay couples were not prevented from rooming together, yet married couple were, was portrayed as an attack on gay people.

Diver Matthew Mitcham, reigning gold medallist in the 10m platform dive, is Australia's only openly gay Olympic athlete.

"I was very sad that whole issue got thrown up as an anti-gay comment," he said.

"I spoke to Matty Mitcham. I like Matty, because I didn't want him to get the wrong idea.

"It was a gender-based argument, it's not so much that there's many couples here who are gay athletes.

"I didn't mean to offend."

Mark tried to overturn the Australian Olympic Committee's refusal to allow him to room with his wife after they were told rooms were being divided along gender lines.

It also emerged yesterday that after so much damaging debate, Mark's roommate Michael Diamond is yet to arrive in the village, due in next week.

Asked if that allowed Lauryn to stay in his room, Mark laughed and replied: "Michael gets here on the 31st."

Which, it was pointed out, left plenty of nights for Lauryn to stay in his room.

"Michael gets here on the 31st," he laughed again.

I like McGuire but what a low stupid thing to say about Lauryn Mark, I hope she can sue the Arse Clown from here to breakfast time.

THERE were no tears this morning from the man accused of killing 18-year-old Thomas Kelly as a court was told he could expect to spend at least the next two months in custody.


Kieran Loveridge, 18, of Seven Hills, was arrested and charged with murder last week following the bashing death of the 18-year-old accounting cadet early this month.


During his brief second appearance in Burwood Court this morning, there was no sign of the emotion the teen showed during his visit to the courtroom last week - when he appeared to cry as he sat in the dock for the first time.

Loveridge rocked from side to side in his chair and looked straight into the camera as he appeared in court on a video screen from Silverwater prison, where he has been held since his last court visit.


His lawyer previously flagged a bail application for the 18-year-old, but the bid was withdrawn this morning.
Loveridge will now remain in custody until at least his next scheduled appearance in Central Local Court on September 20.


He was arrested and charged last week with the murder of Mr Kelly, who suffered critical head injuries and later died in hospital after he was taken off life support.


Mr Kelly had been on his first night out in the Kings Cross nightclub district when he was allegedly attacked just after 10pm.

Corey Loveridge and a mate murdered a 17-year-old boy in a random street attack hours after he said he wanted "to stab and kill someone tonight", court documents allege.

Loveridge, 18, and his 17-year-old mate repeatedly kicked and stabbed the boy until he fell to the ground in a Sydney street, the documents say.

The two teenagers allegedly committed the murder on the same night they allegedly bashed an 87-year-old woman in a violent home invasion.

The court documents say the pair broke the woman's own walking stick over her head and kicked and punched her after she fell to the ground.

In Penrith Local Court on Tuesday, magistrate Annette Sinclair committed Loveridge to stand trial in the Supreme Court on September 14 in Sydney.

Corey Loveridge and his co-accused allegedly attacked the boy, his brother and stepbrother in Maple Road, North St Marys, in Sydney's west, about 3.20am (AEDT) on December 1, 2010.

The victim's brothers assumed he had escaped with them but returned to find him bleeding in the gutter.

He died on the way to hospital.

Less than two hours earlier, police say Elena Parrelli, 87, awoke to find the pair at the rear of her house before she was beaten so badly she could not walk..

During her attack, she activated her "VitalCall" necklace, which recorded yelling and threats of "We'll f***ing kill you" and "Where's the money, motherf****r?"

Corey Loveridge was arrested a day later at Parramatta railway station while buying a bus ticket to South Australia where his father lives.

He is also charged with telling a family member during a phone conversation from Silverwater jail to recruit someone to "bash the f**k out of Billy".

"Billy" is an associate of the accused and is a crown witness.

Loveridge also sent a letter from custody to two cousins telling them to "shut there (sic) mouths", court documents allege.

He is the cousin of Kieran Loveridge, 18, who was charged last week with the bashing murder of Thomas Kelly, 18, and the assault of three other young males in Kings Cross in just over an hour on the night of July 7.

Kieran Loveridge is expected to apply for bail in Burwood Local Court on Wednesday.

His 17-year-old friend remains in custody for bashing a Channel Nine cameraman outside the same court where Kieran appeared last week.

Australia's Green Ideological Disaster

Australia is providing a case study in the self-destructive politics of green ideology, when believers of the religion of global warming gain political leverage.

Between 1996 and 2007, John Howard became Australia's second-longest-serving prime minister, with his center-right administration being regarded as the epitome of responsible economic management, overseeing the "good years for Australia."  In 2007, Kevin Rudd's left-wing Labor Party gained office, and by 2009, a six-year run of budget surpluses gave way to the largest deficits in modern politics.

A slew of ideologically charged policies followed, including a nationally subsidised home insulation scheme which was unregulated, resulting in millions of wasted funds and even a death due to unqualified installation, and a public education "revolution" to renovate school buildings where the government happily paid exorbitant over-inflated tenders for unnecessary and, in some cases, unwanted refurbishments, blowing over $1 billion.  This "revolution" was overseen by Rudd's deputy, Julia Gillard.

With plummeting polls leading into the 2010 election, having been bestowed with the mantle of the worst prime minister in Australia's history, Rudd's leadership was successfully challenged by Gillard.  However, Gillard was no shoe-in for prime m,inister, and to counter an effective campaign by the conservatives who warned that another Labor government would mean an unpopular carbon emissions tax, Gillard declared that "there will be no carbon tax under the government I lead."

The election was even tighter than predicted and resulted in the first hung parliament since 1940.  To secure power, Gillard chose to cut a deal with three independents and a lone Greens member of parliament.  Despite her declaration to the contrary, Gillard was now over a (green) barrel and was forced to renege on her commitment not to introduce a carbon tax in order to honor her agreement with the Greens, whose agenda not surprisingly included a carbon tax.
It's taken Gillard two years to implement the controversial tax, during which time she has been irreverently referred to as "Ju-liar."  Thoughts of staying in power have no doubt helped her withstand such criticism, along with the support of a sympathetic Obama. 

During his visit here in November last year, he expressed his support for the tax, saying, "I think that's good for the world ... I actually think, over the long term, it's good for our economies, as well, because it's my strong belief that industries, utilities, individual consumers -- we're all going to have to adapt how we use energy and how we think about carbon."

The tax came into effect at the start of the 2013 financial year, yet after only a few weeks, the vociferous reaction from the Australian public can't be ignored.  They are smarting not only from a new controversial tax, but also from a prime minister who expressly said she would not implement it.  The foundation of the Labor Party, working-class families, are feverishly adjusting their weekly grocery budgets to account for a policy that many would have never thought possible.  Long-term voters of the left are shell-shocked, feeling cheated and abandoned.

Far from serving the working class, a carbon tax is the Trojan Horse of what many view as eco-terrorist environmentalism designed at saving trees -- or worse, generating a warm fuzzy feeling inside -- rather than jobs and a sustainable future.

One would hope that deliberate untruths would be uncommon in Western politics, but outright lying should never be tolerated.  There has been much philosophical deliberation about why people lie, but ultimately in politics the issue is whether the electorate is prepared to tolerate such conduct.  The polls here suggest a distinct lack of mercy.  In the past weeks, reports indicate that the Labor-Greens coalition is under immense pressure, with Labor Party members labeling the Greens as "extremists" and the Greens, ironically honestly, describing Labor as lacking values and standing for nothing.

The relevance of Australia's experience for the U.S. is that it highlights the degree of ideological blindness the left can be prone to.  In Australia's 150-seat House of Representatives (the equivalent of Congress), the Greens secured one seat.  Notwithstanding the vagaries of the Australian electoral system, that equates to roughly 0.6% of the vote.  Simplistically put, by making a deal with the Greens, the incumbent administration has implemented a policy that less than 1% of the electorate voted for.

The concern to a modern liberal democracy like Australia is not that minority political parties such as the Greens exist, but that they are offered a place at the table without the consent of the public at large.  Obama, as far as I can tell from here, was forced to shelve his plans for a carbon tax because even the Democrats could see the negative economic consequences.  Yet Gillard has chosen to somehow live in denial of its affects on the long-term health of the Australian economy, which is beyond me -- but then there are so many truths extreme liberals fail to acknowledge that it's not entirely surprising.
Bush had his critics, but at least one knew where he stood.  John Howard certainly held his ground on an issue, no matter the reaction of the chattering masses.  The danger of the left's liberalism is that it is so focused on popularity that its policies are often extremely short-sighted.  Gillard must be struggling to reconcile her short-term desire for power with her integrity.
Reports suggest that Obama is doing his best to "bankrupt" the coal power industry.  What should be of concern to U.S. voters is that Obama's energy policy could well be the thin edge of the wedge of increasingly-left-of-center ideology crystalizing into policy.  I trust that the events Down Under serve as a timely reminder of what the left is prepared to deny in order to maintain a false ideology.
