IT is in the egalitarian nature of Australia that we have neglected to cultivate a class of genuine elites. Unfortunately, this vacuum at the top means that a bunch of chattering mediocrities have appointed themselves to the role of our moral and intellectual betters. Some even have acquired posh accents and a haughty tone to give the impression of superiority. They share a stunning lack of humility. What unites them is their opinion that other Australians, “out there” in the suburbs, are selfish, parochial, gullible, redneck morons, easily led by evil Right Wing NutJobs (RWNJ). Our faux elites claim they are driven by altruism, at least when it comes to issues that don’t adversely affect them, like refugee, drug and climate policies. They don’t live in suburbs affected by drug crime, and can afford to pay for rehab for their wayward offspring. They don’t have to fish dead bodies out of the ocean or face the consequences of their demand for open borders. They don’t compete for welfare resources or family reunion quotas with asylum seekers or live near areas of social friction. They barely notice the soaring energy costs that arise from climate policies they push for reasons of guilt, moral vanity, and in-crowd identity. Their compassion is employed only in those circumstances where it showcases their status and their membership of a virtuous elite. Thus, the tragedy of Syria’s civil war only merited their tears after that photograph of a drowned Syrian toddler became a media focal point. What followed was an unseemly contest to trumpet their sad feelings. To any reasonable observer, these people are irrational and ridiculous, bordering on downright dangerous. Their self regard is so extreme that it verges into mass delusion. Or, to apply a more precise diagnosis, they suffer from an affliction know as “pathological altruism”. This is the inspired coinage of American systems engineer Barbara Oakley. In a 2013 paper for the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, she defined it as “behaviour in which attempts to promote the welfare of … others results, instead, in harm that … was reasonably foreseeable.”
So, for instance, if you accidentally break a vase while helping a friend move house, that is not pathological altruism because the bad outcome was not foreseeable. But if your brother is going through drug withdrawal and you get him more drugs to make him feel better, you are just “enabling his addiction. In this case, your well-meaning altruism is pathological. Oakley cites examples such as “the overly attentive ‘helicopter’ father who threatens to sue instructors who give well-deserved bad grades, or the mother who attempts to protect her son by refusing to vaccinate him and who consequently fuels a loss of herd immunity underpinning a local whooping cough epidemic in which an infant dies”. Closer to home, examples abound: drug liberalisers, who wants ice decriminalised might be motivated by a desire to help drug addicts. But their remedies only exacerbate the harms and increase the numbers of addicts. Similarly, well-meaning lefties, who talked Kevin Rudd into dismantling Howard-era border protections caused harm to those people they lured across the ocean, to those refugees whose places were taken, and damaged public confidence in our high level of migration. In other words, what might feel altruistic can end up making the situation worse. “Altruistic intentions must be run through the sieve of rational analysis; all too often, the best long-term action to help others … is not intuitively obvious, not what temporarily makes us feel good, and not what is being promoted by other individuals, with their own self-serving interests,” Oakley says. Elevating rational analysis over emotion is what the Prime Minister did last week when considering Australia’s response to the Syrian crisis: “It’s important that we act with our head as well as with our heart here. “While I think we are all in the grip of grief, really, as we saw the tragedy unfolding on our television screens, the responsibility of government ... is to act in a measured and considered way.” But for taking time to consider, he was criticised. In our emotionally incontinent culture, driven by the sentimental narcissism of social media, true altruism can seem cruel. Oakley cites examples of saying “no” to the student who demands a higher grade or to the addict who needs another hit. “The social consequences of appearing cruel in a culture that places high value on kindness, empathy, and altruism can lead us to misplaced ‘helpful’ behaviour and result in self-deception regarding the consequences of our actions.” Thus our faux elites damned the Abbott government as cruel when it went about rescuing our immigration system from criminal people smugglers. They refuse to acknowledge that only because we “stopped the boats” is it possible to offer 12,000 Syrians a new home. Similarly, they slam the government for skewing the intake towards persecuted minorities, particularly Christians against whom a religious genocide is being waged in the Middle East. In order to showcase their tolerance they falsely claim helping the most needy is Islamophobic. No, the altruism flaunted by our phony elites isn’t really about helping refugees or drug addicts or saving the planet. It’s all about burnishing their reputations. The road to hell is paved with their good intentions.

MORE than 90 per cent of surveyed refugees granted permanent visas under the previous Labor government had failed to find a job within three to six months, forcing the majority to rely on government welfare to survive, a new report has revealed. Despite 80 per cent claiming to feel “welcomed by Australia”, the social difficulties they faced were immense, according to the first government study to follow the new wave of humanitarian migrants. Almost half reported they had never had a job in their lives, and 15 per cent had never attended school in their birth country. Almost 40 per cent reported not understanding or speaking English, with only 10 per cent having a university degree and just 6 per cent being qualified for a trade. Only 7.8 per cent had qualifications recognised in Australia. As a result, only 6 per cent of all those followed in the Building a New Life in Australia (BNLA) report, to be released today by the Department of Social Services, had found a job. The main source of income for 88 per cent of the refugees at the time of reporting was government payments. Newstart or Youth allowance payments accounted for 71.8 per cent, with 1.8 per cent on the age pension and 1.4 per cent on the Disability Support Pension. A further 19.3 per cent relied on family and parenting-related payments. The study highlights the difficulties facing the 12,000 Syrians the government last week announced would be granted permanent visas in the wake of the humanitarian crisis flowing from civil war and terrorism in Syria.
Social Services Minister Scott Morrison said it “highlighted the serious challenges that Australia had always faced when seeking to resettle refugees through the humanitarian entrance”. “What we want is a good settlement outcome where people become part of Australia’s culture, learn the language, go to school and get a job so they can support themselves,” Mr Morrison said. “We can’t underestimate the scale of that challenge … and the less control over the selection process, the less control you have over outcome. “When you get this wrong the consequences are generational. “That is why, as we seek to identify and assess and integrate 12,000 refugees into Australia, we are focusing on the persecuted minorities, which are dominated by Christian groups, and will go about the process in a systemic and measured, professional manner.
“Where you rush this, where you fail to appreciate the challenges, that is when you reap a bitter harvest.” The study looked at 2399 refugees from over 1500 migrating families who had all been granted permanent visas in 2013 under the former Labor government. They had either arrived or been granted visas three to six months prior to the study being conducted. The study included asylum seekers, boat arrivals and refugees classed as either women at risk, UNHRC-identified refugees, and those granted protection under the special humanitarian program. All were from Iran, Afghanistan or Iraq.
Despite the challenges facing refugees in Australia, the majority reported positive experiences with more than 80 per cent saying it was “good” or “very good”. The majority of all those surveyed had also enrolled in English language classes, which would boost their employment prospects. Many refugees granted protection were regarded as having significant mental health problems, such as post-traumatic stress associated with war zones. More than a third assessed their health as fair, poor or very poor, which was marginally higher than indigenous communities but three times higher than non-indigenous Australians.

Hundreds of thousands of illegal migrants from the Third World are this year streaming into Europe, and in ever-increasing numbers.
They’ve heard the fences have been trampled flat, and are now marching through Europe’s poorer southern countries to demand entry to the richest, especially Germany.
They are demanding to have what people from another culture have created — and are demanding it simply because they want it, too.
After all, their own cultures have failed to produce any such riches, and without reform won’t.
Actually, when I say these people are poor, I mean only relatively. Many are actually rich enough to have seen the West’s wealth on their iPhones, and to have paid thousands of dollars to fly, drive or sail to the gates of Europe.
Now, normal people do not let strangers barge into their homes to take what they fancy, yet the Left in Europe has done just what the Left in Australia did when 50,000 illegal immigrants sailed here under Labor.
It has said yes, let them come and take it.
And Australian journalists, in an astonishing frenzy of sanctimony, demanded we take thousands of them, too, to come help themselves.
None of this makes sense, although the sanitised news reporting may explain some of this delirium.
For instance, the media have focused on a drowned toddler and on desperate families with children to whom you would give your heart, and some cash. But almost completely absent from media reports are the unmistakeable symptoms of the culture clash Europe is now admitting.
I have seen virtually no news report here about the violent riots in three German cities last week between Kurdish and Turkish immigrants, nor about the brawl in a German hostel by around 100 Syrian migrants outraged by the tearing of a Koran by an Afghan.
There has been a virtual blackout on last week’s riot on the Greek island of Lesbos by hundreds of Afghan men. There was a similar blackout on the scores of migrants chanting “f--- you” at Budapest when denied a train.
No TV news bulletin showed migrants in Hungary hurling stones, or the well-built migrant at an aid centre turning aggressively to a camera to mime the slashing of a throat. Few reports noted the warning by Spain’s government of infiltration of these columns of migrants by Islamic State terrorists.
Nothing that might make you fear the consequences of this great river of people is given much coverage. Even news in April that Muslims on a boat to Italy murdered Christian passengers was played down.
TV reports last week also said little about the massive trail of rubbish left along the road by this migrant army — rubbish suggesting an uncomfortable truth, that renters do not respect a home as owners do.
Nor is much context given for the rising unease by working-class Europeans at this massive influx of people from the Third World, 72 per cent of them men and overwhelmingly Muslim. That context: European nations from Spain to Sweden are already suffering from the great cultural clash of our time, between Islam and the Christian West.
All have struggled to assimilate large Muslim minorities, and all have battled increasing jihadism.
They have learned that mass immigration from the Middle East is now more like colonisation, as our own Lakemba shows.
No surprise. Why assimilate, when satellite TV beams in programs from home, the internet binds a world-wide ummah, subsidised mosques are around the corner, shopkeepers speak Arabic and cheap travel keeps old ties strong?
All this has been played down by our media class. What should be seen as a threat to be resisted to maintain our Western societies is presented instead as a duty to accept.
Even German Chancellor Angela Merkel, praised by the Left for seeming to welcome an expected 500,000 illegal immigrants this year, admits Germany will be changed, and possibly not for the best.
“What we are experiencing now is something that will occupy and change our country in coming years,” she said.
“We want the change to be positive, and we believe we can accomplish that.”
Or maybe Germany won’t, but then it will be too late.
So how to explain this refusal to defend the West from an invasion of people whose culture often seems at war with all the West represents?
The answer is most obvious with Germany — shame for the past.
Merkel knows using the German army to force unwanted minorities onto trains for shipment will be too shocking a reminder of her country’s Nazi history.
This guilt still drives Germany’s intelligentsia, with Nobel-winning writer Herta Müller groaning: “We have the responsibility given the past.”
But shades of a similar shame runs through the West’s media and political elites, who have long held Europe in contempt for its racist and colonialist legacy, and howled down any suggestion of its civilising influence on the world.
That’s not so in the prouder and more religious nations of Eastern Europe, now the most adamant about not accepting these immigrants.
But the intelligentsia of Western Europe has for decades vilified even their rich Christian heritage, the foundation of their freedoms, as little more than a shameful relic of an oppressive faith ministered by paedophile priests.
And so Christian churches in countries such as Holland are converted into offices and shops, while proud mosques rise in immigrant suburbs.
In Australia it has been the same — or worse.

Decades of such preaching in schools and universities have succeeded. They have produced a political and media class that trashes the very idea of Western civilisation — those bits it can still understand.
This is a class that resents its own wealth and despises its past, inventing genocides that never occurred.
It is a class that sees Australia as riddled not just with racists but planet-killers, eating evil coal and living on “stolen” land for which some ritual apology must be made at public events to “traditional owners”.
It is a class that sneers at patriotism (Sydney’s Waverley Council once even banned the Australian flag at the Bondi Pavilion, calling it inflammatory) and mocks talk of “Team Australia”.
It is a class which celebrates hyphenated identities — Lebanese-Australian, Chinese-Australian — and attacks Australia Day as “Invasion Day”.
At bottom, this is a class which attacks the traditions that produced our prosperity, and which believes we little deserve what we grubbily have.
No, share our wealth with those more worthy. Invite the Third World to come take what we sinners only stole.
There was this loving grandfather who always made a special effort to spend time with his son's family on weekends. Every Saturday morning he would take his 5-year-old granddaughter out for a drive in the car for some quality time - pancakes, ice cream, candy—just him and his granddaughter. One particular Saturday, however, he had a terrible cold and could not get out of bed. He knew his granddaughter always looked forward to their drives and would be very disappointed. Luckily, his wife came to the rescue and said that she would take their granddaughter for her weekly drive and breakfast. When they returned, the little girl anxiously ran upstairs to see her grandfather who was still in bed. "Well, did you enjoy your ride with grandma?" he asked. “Not really, Papa, it was boring. Mohamed Abdulrahman guilty of hitting police officer Sarah Crawford The Daily Telegraph September 11,2015
HE is the serial police assaulter whose own mother helped him in his attempt to resist arrest. But Mohamed Atteya Abdulrahman has thrown one punch too many at the law after being found guilty this week of giving an officer a black eye during an all-in family scuffle with police as they tried to arrest him for assault. Magistrate Shane McAnulty said it was a “very hostile situation’’ when police went to talk to Abdulrahman at his family home at Granville on October 17 last year over claims he had bashed his then fiancee. The situation quickly deteriorated when officers attempted to arrest Abdulrahman. During the melee, the 21-year-old punched Constable Joel Swales in the eye as the officer tried to handcuff him. At the time, Abdulrahman was on a two-year suspended sentence for assaulting police and resisting arrest on September 9, 2013. He was also facing two charges of assaulting police on December 20, 2013. He was later convicted and placed on a further 18- month suspended sentence. Now three more offences can be added to that list after he was found guilty in Parramatta Local Court this week of punching Constable Swales, resisting arrest and common assault against his former fiancee Eda Inceol. When police arrived at Abdulrahman’s home in October last year to make inquiries about the assault on Ms Inceol, he gave a false name and walked inside the house. The officers followed but when they tried to arrest him his family intervened. Mr McAnulty said as Constable Swales tried to handcuff Abdulrahman “he is stopped by the accused and the accused's brother (Ahmad) who is attempting to shelter him and his mother who is attempting to get in the way’’. Mr McAnulty said Abdulrahman punched Constable Swales in the right eye. Abdulrahman is on bail pending his sentence on November 16.
OPPOSITION foreign affairs spokesperson Tanya Plibersek could not utter the word “Christian” yesterday when discussing the range of characteristics that might make a victim out of a person stuck in the Middle East conflict. Instead, she said we shouldn’t choose people according to their religion when selecting the 12,000 extra refugees the Abbott government has generously agreed to accept from the UNHCR and resettle here. She’s been supported by Dr Ibrahim Abu Mohamed, Australia’s grand mufti, who erroneously believes that choosing refugees based on religion or ethnicity was the very kind of sectarian thinking “that got Iraq and Syria into the problems they’re facing now”. They should consult the Koran and review the phrases favoured by Islamists and extremists if they want to find creepy justifications for the crisis. Daesh, or IS, the most barbaric force unleashed since the defeat of Nazism and Communism, has singled out Christians and Christian women, particularly, among other minorities for the most inhumane treatment, including rape, slavery and of course, torture, crucifixion and murder. Should we not be attempting to provide refuge for these persecuted groups, some of whom belong to sects that claim to pre-date Christianity? Plibersek and some others in the Labor Party are attempting to hide behind the absurd politically correct rationalisation that extending help to those who have suffered the most cruelly would place Australia in breach of some form of anti-discrimination protocol. In this, and in some other responses to last Friday’s tragic picture of a dead boy, the compassionistas have revealed their true faces.
Even as Immigration Minister Peter Dutton was in Europe seeking the views of the UNHCR on how best to assist in this global disaster, Anglican priest Father Rod Bower was telling a dial-a-mob in Hyde Park that: “This human carnage has not moved the stone cold heart of the Abbott government to take in one extra refugee,” and that some “mantra of national security” was being invoked. Message to Fr Bower: In future, hold your comments until the adults have given consideration to what action is necessary, and further, if failed states like Syria and Afghanistan actually had genuine national security regimes there would not be a refugee crisis. Another to add a shrill voice to the debate was Joumana Harris, the president of the United Muslim Women Association. “What we witnessed and what we felt over the last few days was enough to move mountains, and yet we stand here almost begging those we entrust to speak in our name to open their hearts while they discuss when is the best time to drop the first bomb,” she told the same crowd, overlooking the evidence of unspeakable crimes committed by Daesh over the past few years. Harris would have had more credibility if she was noted for her campaigns against female genital mutilation or Daesh, or the Taliban, but she hasn’t made the headlines with her views on those issues. As the bleeding hearts were calling for an open-door border policy, the ABC aired an interview with a Syrian refugee, Katia Alsommoh, who pleaded for Christians and other religious minorities to be given priority, saying she had seen photos of refugees in Germany and Sweden who had been members of IS and Jabhat al-Nusra. While being generous, we must also carefully screen those who we accept. Sweden is now the rape capital of Europe, with first- and second-generation refugees being blamed for much of the increase. Sweden has been taking in a larger share of asylum seekers than any other EU state. Its population is about 9.6 million, and asylum was granted to more than 33,000 refugees last year.

In 2014, 6700 rapes were reported to the Swedish police, an 11 per cent increase from the previous year. In response to a crime wave, Norway last year deported 7259 people and the crime rate dropped 30 per cent. The government’s goal for 2015 is to forcibly return 7800 people. On Monday, Denmark began advertising in Lebanese newspapers to discourage migrants travelling to the country. One in four people living in Lebanon fled the war in Syria. Denmark’s advertisement noted that welfare has been cut by 50 per cent, temporary residence permit holders cannot bring their families to Denmark in the first year, permanent residence is granted only after a minimum five years, strict language requirements apply to obtain a permanent residence and those who are refused refugee status will be speedily expelled. Australia must not compound the problem that already exists in areas of Sydney and Melbourne where groups of Islamic migrants from Lebanon, Afghanistan and Somalia fail to respect our laws and culture. We must welcome those most at risk.
