Refugee Action Coalition & Council for Civil Liberties demand end to punitive policies

Solicitors visiting asylum seekers now incarcerated at Silverwater prison are shocked at what they have seen. Stephen

Blanks, solicitor and secretary of the NSW Council for Civil Liberties briefly interviewed two of the 22 (mostly Iranians

and Kurds) locked up there. He said: “They are in solitary confinement, locked down for 18 hours a day with no access to

communication, either with each other or with the outside world. There are no toothbrushes, no showers, not even any

toilet paper.

“They’ve ended up in prison without any charges being laid and without any supervision from a court. I’ve lodged a

complaint with the Australian Human Rights Commission. One of them told me that when he was forcibly removed from

his bed in Villawood early in the hours of Good Friday, that a guard pushed handcuffs into his wrist, and laughed.

Mark Goudkamp from the Refugee Action Coalition added: “These conditions in Silverwater are unacceptable in a

democratic society. It is also highly ironic given many Iranians detainees fled the Ahmadinejad government’s crackdown

on mass pro-democracy protests in 2009. That Australian authorities think treating people in this way is acceptable is

nothing short of scandalous. Australia frequently condemns human rights abuses in Iran, including in Tehran’s notorious

Evin prison.”

Meanwhile, a planned visit to celebrate Easter Sunday with Villawood detainees has had to be cancelled. Mark Goudkamp

said, “When I rang Serco yesterday, I was told we couldn’t visit friends in detention because Villawood is a ‘crime scene’.

Immigration and Serco are consciously trying to sow divisions among detainees, telling them that the reason visiting is

banned indefinitely is because the rooftop protest is continuing. That this ban includes Stage 1, which was completely

unaffected by Wednesday’s riots, is completely unreasonable and continues the rotten culture of collective punishment

that was a feature of detention under John Howard and Phillip Ruddock. The ban on visits over Easter is diametrically

opposed to the spirit of goodwill that this festive holiday is supposed to represent.

“Despite being prevented from receiving visitors, our asylum seeker friends are looking forward to a strong show of

support outside Villawood tomorrow afternoon. Acting PM Wayne Swan’s view that our march is inappropriate because it

coincides with Anzac Day are quite ridiculous when you consider that Afghanistan, where Australian soldiers are currently

being killed, is also by far the largest source country for asylum seekers. 2267 of the nearly 7000 people now in detention

come from there. Many democratically minded diggers, who themselves went to war thinking they were fighting against

dictatorships and repression, will understand why we are protesting. They are welcome to join us.”

The Sydney action, which is part of a national series of protests against mandatory detention, will assemble at 12 noon at

Chester Hill train station, before marching to the Gurney Rd side of Villawood. Former detainees from Iran, Afghanistan

and Iraq will address the rally, along with psychiatrist Michael Dudley, the Greens, the Teachers Federation, and the

Refugee Action Coalition.

Meanwhile at Curtin detention centre in remote WA, between 300-500 detainees are on hunger strike, and protesting

against the length of time it is taking to process their claims. Around 60 protesters have arrived after a two day bus

journey from Perth, hoping to visit detainees, and to protest against mandatory detention. There will also be a protest at

Maribyrnong detention centre in Melbourne.

Refugee Groups Plan Show of Support for Villawood Detainees on Easter Monday

Following this week’s unrest at the Villawood detention centre, refugee rights advocates will stage a mass show of

support for Villawood detainees on Easter Monday, 25 April. Refugee supporters will meet at Chester Hill station at 12

noon, before marching to the Gurney Rd side of the detention centre for a rally in support of the detainees. Called by the

Refugee Action Coalition (RAC), the action is part of a nationwide series of protests outside detention centres planned

over the Easter weekend, including at the remote Curtin facility in Western Australia.

The rally will hear from refugees who were formerly detained: Najeeba Wazefadost (Afghanistan); Iraj Moghodam (Iran);

and Mohammed Ali Muttari (Iraq). Melina Adlparvar, an Iranian refugee separated from her husband who is inside

Villawood, will also speak. They will be joined by: Annie Neilson, Greens candidate for Fairfield in the NSW election; NSW

Teachers' Federation General-Secretary Jenny Diamond; and Mark Goudkamp, a long-term Refugee Action Coalition

spokesperson.

“The recent unrest in Villawood makes it extremely urgent to show community support for refugees”, said Nick Riemer

from RAC. “It’s an extraordinary irony that both Labor and Coalition politicians talk of refugees having committed

crimes. The damage to property on Wednesday night is nothing compared to the brutalisation of innocent lives caused by

mandatory detention itself. Asylum seekers haven’t committed any crime and shouldn’t be imprisoned. It’s not illegal to

arrive by boat and ask Australia for protection. When you lock people up and treat them like animals, it’s entirely

predictable that they will be driven to desperate acts. There have been five suicides in detention since September, three

in Villawood, and countless cases of self-harm. Hunger strikes happen all the time. If the government had acted on the

advice of leading psychiatrists, this week’s events could have been prevented. As one of the banners of the rooftop

protesters emphasises, they are human and deserve to be treated that way. If we’re talking about crimes being

committed, it’s the government who are the wrongdoers by sticking to their failed and discredited policy of mandatory

detention.”

“The rally will show solidarity with the refugees locked up in Villawood”, said Mark Goudkamp, also from RAC. “All

asylum seekers want is to escape the war and persecution that have driven them from their home countries. But instead

of treating them with decency, and allowing them to contribute to Australian society, the government locks them up.

Australia is the only Western country that does this. Monday’s protest can show that the Daily Telegraph’s politically

driven online polls by do not represent all Australians. 22 asylum seekers were forcibly removed from their beds on

Thursday night and transferred to Silverwater jail. On Christmas Island, police used tear gas and beanbag rounds on

asylum seekers. This is no way to treat refugees. Mr Bowen says he shares the anger of Australians about damage to

government property. Instead, Australians should direct their rage at the pointless violence and brutality inflicted on

asylum seekers. While Mr Bowen should be congratulated for supporting the idea of multiculturalism in Australia and

ending the Howard government’s disparagement of it, if he really means it, the policy of mandatory detention policy

must be immediately abandoned.”

“The government keeps refugees out of the public eye and detains them in inaccessible places”, said Riemer. “The

Gurney Rd entrance to Villawood is the only place from which we can make visual contact with them. Refugee Action

Coalition members are regular visitors to the detention centre. Our friends inside are looking forward to seeing a vocal

and colourful demonstration of support.”

“There’s significant support for refugees among Villawood locals, who remember what their suburb was like before the

barbed wire went up in the early 1990s,” Goudkamp added. “We expect that many residents will join us in showing

solidarity with the refugees.”

Frances Milne of Balmain for Refugees and tireless refugee advocate just called to say that the Fed Police are now assembling ladders to bring down the rooftop protesters. They protesters in turn are threatening to jump. If anyone can get out there NOW, please do.

Also, the police performed an operation last night inside Villawood, and snatched 22 mainly Iranian and Kurdish people, who were mostly already in bed, and transferred them to Silverwater prison. I will try to find out their names today, and hopefully a visit to the prison can be arranged. Melina, who was absolutely fantastic out at Villawood yesterday, gets a plug here on Channel 7. http://au.news.yahoo.com/a/-/newshome/9244925/poor-staff-training-blamed-for-villawood-riot/ Melina was involved in the democracy protests in Iran, and actually organised one at the Iranian embassy in Dubai after the killing of Neda. Her husband is inside. He has been three times rejected. She has visited him every day, from 12.30-7.45, for the past six months, and with Serco banning visiting yesterday, she joined us. When my energy levels were flagging late yesterday afternoon, it was her, her aunt, Hadi, the brother of Majid, one of the rooftop protesters, who kept me going. Melina is planning to stay out there 24 hours a day at least until our protest on Monday. When Fabia and I left at about 7.30pm, we left all the RAC placards and a pile of leaflets for Monday with Melina and the 15-20 other mainly Iranians who were going to stay there all night.

There's plenty of negative news. Jim Casey, state secretrary of the FBEU also did very well on the 7.30 Report http://www.abc.net.au/7.30/, by stressing that no members of the Fire Brigade union were injured, and saying that the attacks on firefighters have been exaggerated. Unfortunately, Jamal has made claims that firefighters were deliberately hosing down the rooftop protesters. They may have got wet while firefighters tried to put out the flames, but I refuse to believe that firefighters would have directly hosed down people whose building wasn't actually going up in flames.

On Lateline http://www.abc.net.au/lateline/, Sarah Hanson-Young did well, although she repeatedly evaded what I thought was a very good question by Tony Jones...ie. will the greens use their political leverage to block other key legislation in order to force a change to mandatory detention? They should!!

We now have three days until our protest at Villawood on Monday, 12pm at Chester Hill Station. We should strive to get the word out as far and wide as possible between now and then. We are holding a stall at the Woodville shopping centre next to Villawood station on Saturday 11-1. We have 100s of multi-lingual letters (English, Tamil, Arabic, Persian, Vietnamese, Mandarin and Spanish) that we have been putting into the letterboxes of people who live in the area around Villawood. I am also planning to leaflet the Michael Franti and Spearhead concert at the Enmore Theatre on Sunday night.

If anyone has other ideas, please go for it. I know there is a Food&Tunes festival at Adison Rd Marrickville tonight from 6-9, and an inner west rock gig at the Sandringham Hotel in Newtown from 1pm-midnight on both Sat and Sunday that should also draw a progressive crowd.

Sydney's number one rating mid morning radio show host,2GB's Ray Hadley,dropped a bombshell on his show (April 20) reveling he had been contacted by an “insider” at the illegal entrant detention center at I believe he said was Christmas Island.

The Insider claims that the detainee's are demanding and receiving large numbers of Condoms.

What’s the big deal I hear you say, well the vast overwhelming majority of illegals are male.

You see they abandoned their wives, children and presumably  girlfriends, leaving them to fend for themselves from the manifestations of Islam in the various Middle Eastern / Islamic countries they ran away from.

In the instance referred to by the insider, the inmate population is 400 males only, what do they want condoms for ?

Well unfortunately a lot of “unaccompanied “ young boys are mixed in amongst the inmates, and are reportedly been used by older stronger males in the same way young boys are used for homosexual sexual acts in many of the Islamic countries they ran away from. BUILDINGS BURN AT VILLAWOOD DETENTION CENTRE

At least three buildings in stage 3 are on fire and one major fire has
been set in the grounds of the stage 3 compound. Fire engines are
racing to the detention centre to attend to the fires.

There are reports that windows have been broken in the management office.

Villawood detention centre is in uproar as more asylum seekers stage
protests in the grounds of stage 3 inside the detention centre, while
the roof top protest of 13 asylum seekers continues.

Serco guards have withdrawn from the compound.

There are 13 people on the roof-top protest – three Kurdish, two
Iranian and eight Afghan asylum seekers. There have been in detention
for between 13 and 20 months.

“We are too tired,” one of the detainees told the Refugee Action
Coalition, “Everyone is too tired. I have never seen Villawood like
this – everyone is protesting. Everything is burning now.”

ABOUT one in eight Australian children speaks Arabic at home, a study shows.

New data has been released by the federal Department of Education providing a snapshot into the early development of children.

It found Arabic to be the most commonly spoken language other than English at home, with 11.8 per cent of children conversing in this tongue with their parents.

Vietnamese was next on 8.4 per cent, followed by Greek (4.3 per cent).

Chinese languages are also widely spoken, with 3.7 per cent of Australian kids speaking Mandarin, slightly outnumbering Cantonese (3.6 per cent).

Hindi, a language common in India, was the tongue of 3.2 per cent of kids.

The Australian Early Development Index study surveyed the teachers of 47,000 children about the language their pupils spoke at home.

It found 12.8 per cent of children had English as a second language.

THREE commercial passenger planes have been targeted by a laser pointer in Sydney.
Police say the three incidents happened within an hour and half of each other last night as the planes were approaching the airport in Mascot.
The pilot of the third flight was struck in the eye by the high powered light.
Each of the planes landed safely.
Flight crews told police that the laser appeared to be coming from the Cronulla or Brighton areas.
High powered laser pointers are prohibited weapons and can't be possessed without a permit.

Three passenger jets approaching Sydney airport have struck by a high powered laser, one pilot being hit in the eye.
People who point laser lights at planes should be treated like terrorists under the law, says a passenger who had a bright green beam shone at his window as his flight landed in Sydney overnight.
Laser lights were shone at three passenger planes last night, including a Qantas flight from Brisbane just after 9pm, police said.
Michael Manikas, who was on that flight returning home from a business trip, said a bright green light was shone at his window.
"I saw it flash around and it was pretty bright so it must have hit around the window where I was looking out.

A Jetstar flight was targeted about 10.25pm and a light was flashed into a Virgin Blue cockpit three minutes later, dazzling the pilot, police said.
All flights landed safely.
Police believe the incidents were linked and the laser was being shone from Cronulla or Brighton Le Sands.
Miranda police Inspector Leonard James said he could not understand what compelled people to target planes.
"It's a serious offence," Inspector James said. "The 400 or however many people on board that are at risk, plus anyone on the ground ... it's quite serious."
A spokesman from the Australian and International Pilots Association said laser lights could seriously distract pilots.
"Even at altitude, it can still be distracting because the natural tendency for anyone is to follow the source of the light.
"That can obviously dazzle you and even if it doesn't, it's just an unwanted distraction especially going through the reasonably complicated process of landing."
A spokesman for Qantas said: "Generally speaking, it's an irresponsible and dangerous thing to do, so we condemn it unequivocally."

Malaysian men have extramarital sex because of "wives who neglect their responsibilities" to their husbands, a Malaysian MP has told his country's parliament, outraging women's groups.

"Husbands driving home after work see things that are sexually arousing and go to their wives to ease their urges," said independent lawmaker Ibrahim Ali, according to online portal Malaysiakini.

"But when they come home to their wives, they will say, 'wait, I'm cooking,' or 'wait, I'm getting ready to visit relatives'," Ibrahim said.

"In Islam, wives are supposed to stop everything to fulfil their husband's demands."

Ali heads Perkasa, a right-wing Malay nationalist group, seeking to protect ethnic Malay dominance in politics.

His strident comments came as he asked about plans by the government's religious development department to educate wives on their responsibilities.

Wives "failing in their duties" pushed men to go to "private places to satisfy their urges", he said.

An aide to the lawmaker has confirmed the remarks but has declined further comment.

His comments have prompted fury among women's groups in a nation with a growing sex industry and a problem with human trafficking.

Women's Aid Organisation chief Ivy Josiah said Ibrahim's comments were unacceptable for a parliamentarian.

"I am appalled as he equates women to being a sex toy and what is worse is that he uses religion to try and justify his position," she said.

"The comments not only show that Ibrahim Ali is a Malay supremacist but a male supremacist as well."

Rights group Tenaganita, which monitors issues of human trafficking and abuse, said such sentiments were one of the causes of human trafficking in the country.

"Because people like Ibrahim Ali believe it is their right to get sex anytime from their wives, or otherwise seek it from elsewhere, that's why you have a growing sex industry and we see such human trafficking cases," senior coordinator Aegile Fernandez said.

Last March, the government launched a national plan against human trafficking as the country moved to quash its image as a transit point for traffickers.

With one of Asia's largest populations of foreign labour, Malaysia relies on illegal and legal migrants to work as domestic servants in plantations and factories and to service the local sex industry.

Malaysian lawmakers also clashed with women's groups last month after a government parliamentarian claimed women were "slow" at the wheel and "oblivious" on the roads.

Plane zapped with laser near Sydney Airport

A Jetstar plane descending towards Sydney Airport has been zapped with a laser, police say.

A green-coloured laser was pointed at the aircraft, apparently from Canterbury in Sydney's west, police said.

The incident happened about 7.15pm yesterday, police said.

Police sent vehicles to the area and inquiries are continuing.

A police spokesman was unable to say where the plane had travelled from or how many passengers were on board.

Pointing lasers at an aircraft is illegal and dangerous, with Detective Inspector Michael O'Rourke from Ashfield Local Area

Command saying such action can endanger lives.

 

These Laser attacks upon aircraft are numerous, this is the first case, to my knowledge, that there has actually been an arrest leading to a trial.

Many, many, commercial jet liners and light aircraft are targeted by Lasers emanating from Sydney’s Occupied Territories as they attempt landing and departure from Sydney’s Kingsford Smith International Airport.

EVERY passenger on board a Virgin Blue flight could have been killed when a teenager shone a laser into the cockpit, a court heard yesterday.

Police allege Abdul Eid, 18, of Auburn, "endangered the lives" of 134 passengers on a flight to Sydney from Melbourne on Sunday night about 7.30pm.

Less than two hours later, the teenager allegedly blinded crew on a police helicopter that was patrolling in the Auburn area following reports of the earlier incident.

The teenager was located shortly after and charged with illegal use of the laser pointer.

A 16-year-old from Berala, who cannot be named, was also charged with the same offences but released on strict conditional bail.

The incident follows a spate of similar happenings, including one at Bexley just two weeks ago.

A green laser light was directed into the cockpit of a police helicopter. No one was caught and the device was found later in a carpark by police.

In Parramatta Bail Court, Eid was labelled a threat to the general public by the prosecution.

"This offence had the potential to endanger lives. The protection of the community is paramount," the police prosecutor said.

Eid's lawyer said there were a number of people involved in the incident and there was no way to prove it was her client.

But the prosecutor told the court the police helicopter had recorded vision of Eid using the device.

The court registrar branded Eid a "serious risk to the community" before refusing bail.

Eid will reappear in Burwood Local Court via audio visual link tomorrow.

A spokeswoman for Virgin Blue last night confirmed the flight crew had reported the incident and labelled the act as "sheer stupidity".

FOR a young man in trouble who wanted a favour from the court, soccer star Kerem Bulut should perhaps have given more thought to his wardrobe.

Young Socceroo Bulut, who has been charged in relation to violent crimes and is allegedly a member of a Sydney criminal gang, wore a hoodie emblazoned with the motif of a gun when he attended Burwood Local Court yesterday.

Bulut was applying to have his passport returned so he could play for FK Mlada Boleslav in the Czech Republic competition.

The 19-year-old striker was forced to surrender his passport in November last year after being charged with five offences including membership of the Muslim Brotherhood Movement, a criminal organisation.

Bulut was among five people arrested in raids by police last year.

It's alleged four other youths armed with knives attacked two men in a carpark at Auburn on August 15, 2010.

Police said the same alleged victims were attacked again at Bondi Beach shortly before the arrest. They alleged this attack was carried out by Bulut and three other teenagers.

Magistrate Christopher Longley returned Bulut's passport following an application by Bulut's solicitor Nick Boyden that his client be allowed to fulfill his contractual obligations with FK Mlada Boleslav.

The prosecution said it did not oppose the application because the charges were likely to be reduced.

Mr Boyden said his client would likely only face one charge.

In a letter to the court, FK Mlada Boleslav sports director Ladislav Minar asked that Bulut be allowed to return to his team, with which he has not played since August.

"Kerem is a young professional with undoubted talent representing one of the outstanding sporting talents in his chosen field in his age group in Australia," Mr Minar said.

"He has the opportunity to further his career and with this will come economic rewards we believe will further distance him from those negative influences around him."

Bulut's absence had "considerably disadvantaged" the team, currently placed fifth.

In a second letter, a spokesman for Football Federation Australia said Bulut would benefit from a return to discipline, training and teamwork.

Bulut also needed his passport to be eligible to play for the Young Socceroos at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Colombia in July, it said.

"Allowing Kerem to resume his career will present him the much-needed opportunity to separate himself from his current situation," wrote John Boultbee, head of national teams and football development.

"We are aware of the need for him to be in a stable, supportive situation, away from less positive influences."

Mr Longley ordered Bulut to return to Burwood Local Court next week to provide the dates during which he would be out of Australia.

Muslim Women in Sport
The benefits derived from sport can not be denied. Not only do they have physical and social benefits, but also essential psychological consequences. Since sport is also a compulsory part of the curriculum in all schools, it is important to address the many Islamic conflicts that us sisters may face.

The Need for Sport
Men and women alike are in need of sport and exercise. Physical fitness is certainly encouraged, just as a balanced diet is endorsed, and harmful substances are prohibited. Exercise is also conducive to a more balanced emotional state, as it aids in the release of harmful free radicals and excess hormones. Mundane routines must also be broken otherwise it could affect a women\'s input into society, as well as her relationship with her husband and family.

The Sahaabah were aware of these issues, and would exhort others for the same. \'Ali bin Abi Talib (r.a.a) said: \"Refresh your minds from time to time, for a tired mind becomes blind.\" Abu Darda` (r.a.a) also commented: \"I entertain my heart with something trivial in order to make it stronger in the service of the Truth.\"
The Prophet (s.a.w) advised his followers to engage in many forms of sport, which even today are considered of the best form of exercise. The Prophet (s.a.w) himself would engage in wrestling, racing, archery and horse races.
While Aisha (r.a.a) was on a journey along with the Apostle of Allah (s.a.w), she had a race with him and outpaced him. As time passed, the Prophet (s.a.w) wished to avenge for his loss, so he raced her again, in which case he outpaced her, and remarked: \"This is for that outpacing.\"

The Etiquette\'s of Sport
The restrictions on women participating in sport or physical activity is more than that of men. All Islamic observances must be followed, regardless of any school policies or social stigmas. Our obedience to our Creator cannot be given preference to a creature of Allah.
When participating in sports, the clothing must be Islamically acceptable. This would therefore exclude shorts, t-shirts, leotards, swimming costumes etc.
It is very important to ensure that there are no males watching. Mixing of sexes is forbidden in normal situations, except in special situations under certain conditions, let alone in a sporting arena or exercise facility. It also restricts your activities, and modesty would not allow this in any case.
Swimming
In most female-only schools, there are always male teachers around. Hence wearing even body suits is not sufficient, therefore to remove yourself from this activity is the only solution. There are some female-only baths or swimming complexes, yet even this is not suitable for the purposes of Muslim women. The following tradition treats this point:

\"Some women from Homs or from Sham (now the area of Damascus) came to \'A\'ishah. She asked, \'Do you enter the public baths? I heard the Messenger of Allah saying that a woman who undresses anywhere else other than in her own house tears off the Satr (shelter) which lies between her and her Lord .\' \" [At-Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud]

It is not only a problem of Satr, but also revealing yourself to disbelievers, an important point which ssisters are ignoranor careless of. Permission for a Muslim woman to reveal her hair, arms etc. is permitted to her husband, father, mother and so on.
Non-Muslim women are excluded from this permission, because contact with them might easily lead to disastrous results. That is why the Khalif \'Umar wrote to Abu \'Ubaidah Ibn al-Jarrah, the Governor of Syria, to prohibit the Muslim women from going to the baths with the women of the Ahl al-Kitab (the People of the Book). [At-Tabari, Ibn Jazir]. According to Ibn \'Abbas \"...a Muslim woman is not allowed to display herself before the women of the unbelievers and non-Muslim poll-tax payers (Ahl al-Dhimmah) any more than she can display herself before other men\" [At-Tabari].
This distinction between women on grounds of character and religion is intended to safeguard Muslim women against the influence of women whose moral and cultural background is either not known or is objectionable from the Islamic point of view.

Gyms
Although many women-only gyms have become popular, we have the same problem as with baths, that being in the presence of non-Muslim women. However, as long as loose clothing is worn along with proper head covering, this problem can be avoided.

Self-Defence
Particularly in Western countries, this is an important form of popular exercise. Sisters must be careful to train only with other women, to maintain loose clothing and head cover, and not to attack at the head, as the Prophet (s.a.w) has forbidden us to hit on the face while training.

 
Watching Sport

Many sisters find themselves in situations where they will be watching sports on TV, at school carnivals, or going to matches. Stadiums are not advisable places for Muslims in general, because of the language, drinking and scenery. Allah has commanded the believing women to lower their gaze, and sport comes as no exception, especially with guys in shorts.

Other Points
Sports and exercise should be judged according to the level of modesty involved. Games such as netball played in a public arena is not befitting to the honour of a Muslimah. No compromises can be made in terms of clothing or mixing. Public showers at female schools is totally forbidden. Many sisters will also apply deodorants after a work-out. What must be kept in mind is the Prophet\'s warning on a fragrant perfumes: \"The woman who perfumes herself and passes through a gathering is an adulteress.\" Some fragrant-free deodorants are available, otherwise apply enough so that the fragrance is not apparent.
A married woman must also have the permission of her husband beforehand, and must ensure that non of her duties as a wife are being sacrificed as a result of her activities.
To keep in line with today's excessive and unwarranted demands for women to have a \"supermodel\" physique, many sisters will exercise for this sole purpose, only adding more stress and anguish to themselves. Keep it as a fun activity, involve your husband with it and make it an intimate part of your marriage life. Keep in mind that over-exercising can result in unrepairable tissue damage, and will turn you off it. Bodily exhaustion is not called for, as Allah (s.w.t) tells us: \"Allah burdens not a person beyond his scope.\" [2: 286] .

IT BEGAN with minor acts of vandalism, including egg throwing and smashed windows, but instead of remaining periodic footnotes in the night log at Auburn police station, the incidents have grown so violent - and the issue so culturally sensitive - that even authorities are reluctant to speak about them publicly.
Australia's oldest Hindu temple, the Sri Mandir in Auburn, is under siege and its devotees gripped by fear.
On March 19, two men in balaclavas stood at the intersection of a nearby road, spraying the front of the prayer hall with eight rounds of bullets. The building was unoccupied at the time.

The busy Hindu temple opened in 1977. It is surrounded by a predominantly Muslim population and it is no secret among locals that tensions have been simmering in recent years, caused by concerns about noise and parking problems at Sri Mandir.
''There is no excuse [for the gun attack],'' the editor of Sydney newspaper The Indian, Rohit Revo, said.
''This was not the work of teenagers; neither was it a petty prank. This is part of a sustained and increasingly violent campaign to scare the temple devotees and drive them out. By definition, this latest attack was an act of terrorism.''
The Sun-Herald is aware the ongoing feud has caused disquiet among some of the most senior police in western Sydney. In a rare move, details of the shooting were deliberately held back from the NSW police media unit through concern that publicity might inflame hostilities.
Auburn City Council claims the first it knew of the incident was when The Sydney Morning Herald published an article on Wednesday. Since then, the chairman of the Community Relations Commission, Stepan Kerkyasharian, has stepped in as an intermediary between Hindus and Muslims.
''Given the enormity and complexity of the issues, this is a classic example where we need to apply the principles of multiculturalism and get people to understand and accept that we are a religiously diverse community … we live together and we respect each other's religious diversity,'' he told The Sun-Herald.
''We will be pursuing this through the commission and meeting people in the neighbourhood to discuss the issues. I will be very active in the area.''
Temple priest Jatinkumar Bhatt is praying for a peaceful solution for the sake of his three young children. Bhatt and his family live behind the temple and are too frightened to go outdoors after dark.
''On the night of the shooting, we heard the noise, but every 10 or 15 days we experience the sound of firecrackers being thrown [over the fence], so we thought it must be that again,'' Mr Bhatt said.
''Then the police came. They showed me the bullet holes in the walls and asked permission to come in and investigate. I am too afraid to say why I think this is happening.''
In an attack in November, four men wielding iron bars smashed their way through 10-millimetre- thick windows, showering the hall with glass while devotees were praying inside.
The temple recently held a community open day in the hope of brokering fresh ties with the wider community.
''Many of our neighbours are very friendly but sometimes it feels like we are in a different place to Australia,'' Mr Bhatt said. ''The attacks are now always. It is like in Libya or Afghanistan.''
Mr Kerkyasharian has met the Bhatt family. ''The teenage daughter says she feels like she lives in a prison,'' he said. ''She said her younger brother doesn't know how to play because they are too scared to go outside to their front yard.''
The founder of the Islamic Friendship Association of Australia, Keysar Trad, said he had given a speech at the open day, in which he stressed the need to ''respect religious places of all faiths''.
''I am convinced these problems are not being caused by people who are religious and would urge the Muslim community to show support and solidarity to their neighbours at this time,'' he said.
Flemington local area commander Superintendent Phillip Rogerson said police were trying to identify the attackers. Auburn Labor MP Barbara Perry said: ''I've got every sympathy for the Hindu community. This type of behaviour should not be tolerated.''
