PRIME Minister Julia Gillard is facing new   leadership concerns among key cabinet and caucus supporters over the revival of an alleged 17-year-old union slush fund scandal involving her former boyfriend.

"I did nothing wrong. Have you got an allegation to put to me? If you do not, why are we discussing this?"
Senior government sources have confirmed that over the past two weeks a growing "unease" had crept into the Gillard camp about the scandal "blowing up" and crippling her leadership.

Those fears were compounded yesterday during a fiery interview on Sky's Australian Agenda, when Ms Gillard refused to address allegations raised against her.

"I did nothing wrong. Have you got an allegation to put to me? If you do not, why are we discussing this?" she said.

Ms Gillard has previously denied any knowledge that her then-boyfriend, Australian Workers Union State secretary Bruce Wilson, had allegedly ripped off a union fund that Ms Gillard had set up for him when she was a lawyer with Slater & Gordon in the early '90s.

She refused to answer claims yesterday that she was forced to resign from the firm following an internal investigation in August, 1995.

Instead she hit out at what she claimed was a "malicious and motivated" campaign against her.

Slater & Gordon late yesterday released a short statement, claiming to have been given permission by Ms Gillard, confirming it conducted a review into the AWU/Wilson affair.

"Ms Gillard co-operated fully with the review and denied any wrongdoing," the firm's managing director Andrew Grech said.

"The review found nothing which contradicted the information provided by Ms Gillard at the time in relation to the AWU/Bruce Wilson allegations and which she has stated consistently since the allegations were first raised."

It claimed that Ms Gillard took leave of absence following the review to campaign for the senate, before her employment officially ended on May 3, 1996 when she joined the office of Victorian Opposition Leader John Brumby.

Allegations were raised at the weekend by a former partner at the firm, Nick Styant-Browne, suggesting Ms Gillard may have acted improperly in helping set up a slush fund for Mr Wilson.

Mr Styant Browne claimed that Ms Gillard said in an interview as part of a formal review of the matter conducted by the firm in 1995, that she could not categorically rule out that she had personally benefited from union funds in the renovation of her Melbourne house.

Mr Styant-Browne said yesterday that he stood by the article and the claims made.

"I think what I have said speaks for itself.

"And I am not aware of any denial by the PM or her spokesperson of any specific allegation about what she said in the Slater & Gordon internal interview," he told The Daily Telegraph.

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott said Ms Gillard had "questions to answer" to the parliament. "I think there are real issues that the PM needs to address," he said.

A topless women’s rights activist hacked down a Christian cross in the Ukrainian capital Kiev with a chain saw in protest at the prosecution of Pussy Riot.

The young woman staged her protest as a Russian court was due to deliver a verdict on three Pussy Riot members for performing a political “punk prayer” at the altar of Moscow’s main cathedral — a case that has been criticised by free-speech advocates around the world.

They should have received 50 years each in jail for idiocy, and 6 months community service for their desecration of the church

To show solidarity with the Pussy Riot defendants, Inna Shevchenko, a member of the Ukrainian group Femen which often stages bare-breasted shock performances, destroyed the four-metre high wooden cross bearing the figure of Christ.

The cross, erected in 2005 on a hilltop looking down on the city centre, also served as a memorial to the victims of Stalinist repression and the famine of the 1930s. Two other activists used ropes to direct the fall of the cross.

“No business, not even one as successful as the church, has the right to attack women’s rights,” Shevchenko, 22, a veteran of several Femen protests, said after bringing down the cross.

A criminal case has been formally opened for hooliganism in connection with the incident, police spokesman Ihor Mykhalko said. The maximum sentence for the offence is four years in jail.

Shevchenko, who had “Free Riot” written across her chest and arms, demonstratively crossed herself Orthodox-style before taking the chain saw to the cross.

Afterwards she posed for photographers with her arms spread-eagled. There were no police at the scene.

Femen’s move seems certain to trigger outrage, both among religious groups in the predominantly Orthodox Christian country and among relatives of the millions of victims of famine and repression that took place under Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin.

The cross had been installed near the former Kiev headquarters of the Soviet NKVD state security agency which was the main instrument of Stalin's purges.

Friday’s move represented a departure for Femen activists previously known for baring their breasts at public events to highlight their campaign against prostitution and sex tourism.

When Ukraine hosted the European soccer championship in June - a popular event that many Ukrainians saw as recognition of the country’s place in the European mainstream — Femen used the event to stage high-visibility protests.

Femen activists attempted to steal the championship’s trophy and held several protests in the official Kiev “fan zone” where thousands of foreign tourists were gathered.

INDONESIAN authorities are bracing for a huge influx of boat people, anticipating as many as 10,000 asylum-seekers are waiting in Malaysia to transit through the archipelago and on to Australia.

This estimate was backed by a Malaysian group that deals with unauthorised immigrants. An Australian Government source warned of the potential for a similar influx to the thousands who began arriving in Australia from the late 1990s.

About 1500 asylum-seekers have arrived in Indonesia this year and registered for refugee status, almost all travelling by boat from Malaysia. Another 1500 are believed to have arrived and have not registered.

Indonesian police intelligence suggests between 7000 and 10,000 more people are waiting in Malaysia to make the journey once their passage is organised by people-smugglers.

"It could be 10,000," said senior commissioner Eko Danianto, head of the people smuggling unit at the Indonesian National Police.

"They comprise a mix of nationalities, not only Afghans. There are also Sri Lankan, Myanamerese (Burmese), Iraqis."

However an Australian academic, Dr Roslyn Richardson, of Charles Sturt University, has said asylum seekers know little about Australia before their arrival here.

Networks of people-smugglers service the 1 million Indonesian illegal workers who regularly travel to Malaysia by boat. The same networks also help arrange passage to Australia via Indonesia.

On Saturday, Malaysian authorities arrested 36 Afghans and six Pakistanis being smuggled to Australia via Indonesia. On Sunday, a boat carrying 194 asylum-seekers, mostly Sri Lankans, was intercepted near Christmas Island. Immigration sources said it was believed to have come from Malaysia. It was the biggest boatload of asylum-seekers to arrive in eight years.

"When they start getting big numbers through on a boat, they [people smugglers] get credibility and they get money. It becomes a virtuous cycle for them," said one Australian immigration enforcement official.

Australia and Indonesia have improved co-operation on people-smugglers and have disrupted more boats than the 16 that have reached Australia this year.

With Australian financial and technical support, Indonesia will announce tomorrow up to 12 police "strike teams" dedicated to combat human trafficking.

But a new wave of asylum-seekers from Malaysia will test that capability, which will take months to get running.

Aegile Fernandez, the co-ordinator of the Malaysian immigration support group Tenaganita, agreed with the assessment that up to 10,000 asylum-seekers were waiting in Malaysia. "There would be 10,000," she said. "I would put the blame on these agencies that have been promising Australia as the destination."

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has 49,000 registered refugees and asylum-seekers in Malaysia and estimated there are 45,000 unregistered illegal immigrants.

The Australian Government declined to comment, except to note the number of asylum-seekers was rising worldwide. However, one source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: "It could be 10,000. It could be 5000 or 20,000. We just don't know."

Dr Richardson said strong deterrent messages from Australia did not cut through.

"People smugglers do not pass on detailed policy information," she said yesterday. The asylum seekers knew little of Australia, let alone its immigration policies.

In her study, the reasons 27 refugees gave for coming to Australia centred on its comparative cheapness and accessibility.

The research contradicts Federal Opposition claims that policy changes last year led to a surge in boats.

A report out today by the Migration Institute of Australia found migration agents were perceived to be poorly trained and shonky by parliamentarians, refugee advocates, official and the courts.
