THE bearded and militant men who formed a security detail around Muslim woman Carnita Matthews at court this week are members of the self-styled Islamic Brotherhood Worldwide.

With the name of their organisation across their backs and aggression in their faces, community leaders say the men are students of radical cleric Sheik Feiz Mohammed, who has denounced

other religions in his sermons.

 Carnita Matthews suporters charging media and pedestrians following her appeal been upheld.

Sources say the group is linked to the Bukhari Bookshop in Auburn, also a drop-in centre for Muslim youth and recently purchased by the radical sheik.

Sources say the group grew out of the Global Islamic Youth Centre in Liverpool which was founded in 2000 by Sheik Feiz, who has urged children to die for Islam.

The men flanked the niqab-wearing Ms Matthews at the District Court on Monday when her conviction and jail sentence for making a false racism complaint about the police officer who booked

her for a P-plate offence was overturned.

After kneeling en masse to pray, the men clashed with the media in noisy and aggressive scenes, prompting police intervention.

Matthews' lawyer Stephen Hopper said his client was not a radical.

"That could not be said about some of the people who are supporting her," Mr Hopper added.

The men wore matching black hoodies with the words "Islamic Brotherhood Worldwide" and "One Day One Flag". In Arabic is written: "There is no deity except Allah and Mohammed is a

messenger of Allah."

It was hardly a war cry, a Muslim leader said yesterday.

"They are worldwide only in their imagination," he said.

"Dressing like that is contrary to the Islamic teachings because it is not part of our tradition to wear the name of God on our clothing. It is grossly disrespectful."

Recent assessments by NSW Police show that Australian-born Sheik Feiz, who returned here late last year, does not warrant any serious investigation.

Racist rants have also been removed from public viewing on the Facebook page of a man who says he is Ms Matthews' partner.

He calls himself Hamdi Abu Ibrahim (Hamdi Father of Ibrahim) and his real name is Hamdi Alqudsi.

Both the Bukhari Bookshop and the GIYC denied any knowledge of the Islamic Brotherhood Worldwide.

The sheik was not available for comment.

"Everyone wears slogans. That doesn't make them a gang or a group," a spokesman for the GIYC said.

IT began as a question of identity: Who was the woman behind the burqa?

Yesterday it developed into a mystery about who's who in Carnita Matthews' life.

A bizarre series of events began on Wednesday when The Daily Telegraph interviewed a man outside Ms Matthews' western Sydney home. The man said his name was Ibrahim Galiel and, after initially refusing to say his relationship to Ms Matthews, said he was her husband.

But yesterday at 6.30am Ms Matthews' lawyer Stephen Hopper contacted the paper to say he had been instructed that his client did not know who Ibrahim Galiel was and the man at her house had conducted no interviews but told the media to "go away".

Mr Hopper was also instructed that the Daily Telegraph had threatened the pair with "extortion" by threatening to publish a photograph of Ms Matthews without her niqab unless she consented to an interview. The Daily Telegraph denies this.

Two hours later, when contacted by The Daily Telegraph's lawyer, Mr Hopper maintained his instructions were that a Mr Galiel was no relation of his client's.

Mr Hopper said Ms Matthews had a male partner, but would not reveal his name.

Mr Hopper then said that he was instructed that Mr Galiel was the name of Ms Matthews' former partner. He identified a photograph of the man who had said he was Mr Galiel as a "family friend" and said they were not married and did not live together.

Mr Hopper later confirmed that the man was Ms Matthews' partner but said they did not live together and were not married under Australian law, but under Islamic law.

"I was instructed to say it was a family friend. When pressed further ... it was clarified and (Ms Matthews) says it was her partner," Mr Hopper said.

A 23-year-old Justice of the Peace who thought he was witnessing Muslim woman Carnita Matthews' signature on a legal document said he never asked her to remove her full black niqab but had simply "assumed" it was her.
Campbelltown property manager Awad Chennaoui's statement to police will be examined by the Attorney-General's Department as part of a review of the case.
Mr Chennaoui witnessed the signature on the statutory declaration which was at the centre of 47-year-old mother-of-seven Ms Matthews' prosecution - and successful appeal - for falsely claiming that highway patrol officer Senior Constable Paul Fogarty had tried to lift her veil, which is similar to a burqa.
Judge Clive Jeffreys overturned Ms Matthews' conviction and six-month jail sentence for deliberately making a false complaint because he said he could not be sure beyond a reasonable doubt that it was her signature on the statutory declaration handed to police.
The prosecution said the signature matched that on her driver's licence but the judge said there were a number of differences.
At the real estate agency where he works, Mr Chennaoui yesterday refused to discuss why he did not ask the woman signing the document for identification.
"I am not discussing this. I have nothing to say. I am at work, can you please never contact me again," he said.
In his police statement, which has been seen by The Daily Telegraph, he said that he first heard of Ms Matthews when he took a telephone call on June 8 last year from Wally Awad, a man he knew through Minto Mosque, who said someone needed a JP urgently.The previous day, Ms Matthews had been stopped for a random breath test and was booked by Sen-Constable Fogarty for not properly displaying the rear P-plate on her black Honda Odyssey.
Mr Chennaoui said in the statement that that night at the mosque he met Mr Awad, a man he knew as Hamdi and a woman wearing a full veil who he believed had made the statutory declaration.
"I couldn't see the lady's face except her eyes. I had never met the lady before," Mr Chennaoui said in the statement to police investigating claims made in the document that Sen-Constable Fogarty had been racist and ready to "rip" Ms Matthews' veil from her face.
"I assumed the lady was Carnita Matthews as her name appeared on the statutory declaration."
Attorney-General Greg Smith said yesterday he had received transcripts of the hearing and the judge's decision and had asked the acting Director of Public Prosecutions if there were any avenues for an appeal.
Ms Matthews could not be contacted yesterday.
