Refugee screening finds many kids at risk

The revelation comes after a joint Sydney Children’s Hospital volunteer refugee health screening program of two Sydney English language centres found more than 90 per cent of children require medical intervention.

The high incidence of illness has triggered a call from health workers to expand the award-winning screening program more widely across the state.
Of the 169 children who were screened, more than 90 per cent had “one or more health conditions”.

Health workers found 75 per cent had nutritional or vitamin deficiencies, 30 per cent had vision or hearing problems, 28 per cent were not fully immunised while 25 per cent had an infectious disease.

The Sunday Telegraph can reveal NSW Health Minister Jillian Skinner (pictured) will examine expanding the program across the state, after it received a health innovation award last week.

The program’s clinical lead community pediatrician, Associate Professor Dr Karen Zwi, said families arriving into Australia under its immigration program were only screened for tuberculosis.

Once in the country, refugees are given a Medicare card and encouraged to visit a local GP to be screened and treated for any other ailments.
However, Dr Zwi said not all families take up the advice.

Dr Zwi said the majority of children, most of them aged between 11 and 17, had never been immunised, having come from countries in South East, Africa and the Middle East. Once diagnosed, many of the children responded well to treatment, she said. Dr Zwi said health workers were keen to see the screening program rolled out to other language centres to ensure all children were diagnosed and treated.

“Other than tuberculosis, there is no mandatory routine screening of arrivals,” she said.
“The main point is that everything can be managed and treated if we know about it, but if it is left undiagnosed, it can potentially cause a bigger problem later. You do pick up quite serious things sometimes, but nothing that could not be treated.”

Blood screenings taken over two years of the children at the two language centres found four children to have malaria, nine to be suffering from chronic hepatitis B and 72 to have a vitamin D deficiency.

The Anzacs landed on Gallipoli and met fierce resistance from the Ottoman Turkish defenders. Their plan to knock Turkey out of the war quickly became a stalemate, and the campaign dragged on for eight months.

At the end of 1915, the allied forces were evacuated. Both sides suffered heavy casualties and endured great hardships. Over 8,000 Australian soldiers were killed. News of the landing on Gallipoli and the events that followed had a profound impact on Australians at home. The 25th of April soon became the day on which Australians remember the sacrifice of those who had died in the war.

The Anzacs were courageous, and although the Gallipoli campaign failed in its military objectives, the Australian and New Zealand actions during the campaign left us all a powerful legacy.

A DISGRACED doctor convicted of raping his wife has been banned from practicing for at least two years after a tribunal found he was still more worried about his own fall from grace than any harm he had done to the victim.

Dr Aron Kondasinghe Sudath, who previously practiced at Bega Hospital among other locations, was stripped of his medical license after a failed attempt to have his suspension lifted.

He was previously jailed for nearly four years for raping and assaulting his ex-wife, and was only released on parole in November 2011.

At a Medical Tribunal hearing last week, the former GP and surgeon claimed he believed his traditional, Sri Lankan marriage entitled him to "unconditional consent" for sex with his wife.

He also blamed the victim for initiating intercourse with him then suddenly stopping before he forced himself on her - a version which a judge and jury didn't buy.

In its judgement, the tribunal said Dr Sudath's versions of both the rape and a later assault - which the doctor completed denied - were "unreliable and implausible".

And while it accepted there may have been some "cultural element" to the doctor's crime, the tribunal was "unimpressed" with his belief an Australian woman deserved greater consideration than his Sri Lankan bride.

Dr Sudath told the tribunal he didn't believe he had the right to have non-consensual sex with a previous wife because he had "full respect for her".

"She was a nice blonde, blue-eyed girl from Port Lincoln, Australia - not a Sri Lankan girl," he said.

The tribunal also found Dr Sudath's declarations of remorse for having hurt his wife in the rape were insincere and "more an expression of regret of his own downfall" than concern for the victim.

"There was also an overwhelming impression that the respondent was concerned to tell the tribunal what he perceived it wished to hear in order to enhance his chances of remaining a medical practitioner," it said.

Dr Sudath argued he should be able to keep practicing with conditions because he had a lot to offer the community as a doctor.

But the tribunal rejected the submission and instead cancelled his registration, banning him from re-applying for two years.

Right-wing Dutch MP Geert Wilders has told SBS he is "happy" to be in Australia despite getting a frosty reception from local politicians.

IT was the cheeky smile that signalled to Liam Knight's family he was alive.

As doctors removed the breathing tubes from the critically ill teen's throat on Thursday to see if he could breathe unassisted, Liam's older brother Shane cracked a joke to lighten the mood.

"I said: 'Liam, it's my birthday in a few days, what are you buying me?'," Shane said yesterday.

Liam's response was the greatest gift of all to an anxious family who have maintained an around-the-clock vigil at his bedside since he suffered horrific injuries at a party almost a fortnight ago.

"He just looked up and gave this enormous smile. It was amazing," Shane said. "It was the first time I recognised Liam again since it all happened."

One of Liam's other brothers, Kyle, captured the milestone on his iPhone.

Doctors have told the Knight family that Liam, 17, is still in a serious condition and has a long road to recovery ahead of him.

But Liam's smile was just the tonic the people closest to him needed.

"There really hasn't been anything too positive until then, so it was pretty exciting," Shane said.

"Mum said she felt like it was Christmas. He's gone from his death bed to looking up and smiling at us."

When Liam was rushed to Royal North Shore Hospital late on January 11, doctors told his family things were not good. He had been hit in the head with a metal bar, allegedly thrown by a gatecrasher at an 18th birthday party in Forestville, on Sydney's northern 
beaches.The rusted metal bar that had pierced his skull not only caused severe damage to his brain, but also a serious infection.

"When I saw him that night in hospital with all the tubes, I thought he'd never recover," Shane said.

"We were pretty much told to prepare for the worst, but you never want to think that, you want to remain hopeful, and we did.

"We've been told we won't know exactly what damage has been done for a while, until he tries to do things like talk or walk."

While his family remained at Liam's bedside, the local community has been rallying behind him.

A barbecue fundraiser will be held today from 11am at Woolworths, Frenchs Forest, with all proceeds going towards Liam's ongoing care.

Liam worked there part-time and his mother Mary and one of his brothers are also employees. "They are very much part of the Woolworths family and Liam's colleagues at the Frenchs Forest store were very keen to do something to help out," a Woolworths 
spokeswoman said.A 16-year-old male from North Ryde has been charged over the incident.

ALL NSW students will be given mandatory lessons on the horrors of the Holocaust under sweeping changes to the school history curriculum.

The Board of Studies has confirmed it will roll out a new syllabus that will include studies of the Jewish genocide during World War II.

The changes, which will mirror compulsory Holocaust classes in most US states, the UK and many European countries, will come into effect from 2014.

The Nazi mass slaughter of more than six million Jews, regarded as the darkest chapter of modern history, has only been available to students in Australia as an optional component in history classes.

The Board of Studies will make it mandatory for all history students up to Year 10.

"The Holocaust is now a mandatory inclusion in the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority's history overview," a spokeswoman for the Board of Studies confirmed.

It will also be included in deeper history studies on Australians at war as part of "the nature and scope of 20th-century war".

The Australian Jewish community has the largest percentage of Holocaust survivors in the world, with the exception of Israel.

The NSW Jewish Board of Deputies, which has been lobbying for compulsory Holocaust teachings for the past three years, said NSW had set the benchmark for the rest of the country.

It is now calling on the Gillard government to join about 28 other Western nations and sign up to the Task Force for International Co-operation on Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research.

Jewish Board of Deputies CEO Vic Aldaheff said: "Making the teaching of the Holocaust mandatory up to Year 10 is a tremendous step forward and the NSW Board of Studies and NSW Department of Education are to be applauded for their vision and foresight.

"Although the Holocaust was unique, its lessons about the essential fragility of human civilisation are universal.

"The Holocaust is a warning to every generation about the potential for evil, especially as a consequence of racial hatred, and about the inherent evil of totalitarian regimes.

"It teaches us that every generation owes it to itself and to future generations to cherish, and if necessary fight to defend, the sanctity of life, dignity and freedom."

The Board of Studies spokeswoman said the decision to make studying the Holocaust mandatory was taken after long consultations with the community and teachers.

"The development of the new K-10 syllabuses involved consultation with a range of teachers and community representatives. The board did not receive a submission from the Jewish Board of Deputies during the consultation phase," the spokeswoman said.

JULIA Gillard's leadership came close to collapse yesterday after cabinet refused to back her policy to vote against a UN resolution tomorrow to give greater recognition to a Palestinian state.

After initially snubbing the majority view of her cabinet colleagues on Monday night, the Prime Minister was only convinced yesterday morning to back down when faced with the threat of ministers voting against her in caucus.

It is believed to be the first time since Bob Hawke pushed ahead with uranium mining at Coronation Hill in 1991 that a PM had defied recommendations from cabinet.

Cabinet sources confirmed the PM was forced into a desperate backdown during caucus yesterday after reported threats that Foreign Minister Bob Carr would vote against her if it was put to a vote on the floor - a precedent which would have forced his resignation.

The PM only warded off a caucus bloodbath by announcing a compromise position for Australia to abstain from the UN vote. Her spokesman said yesterday she did not comment on caucus or cabinet matters.

Socialist's always side with the savage

The forced shift in Middle East policy has stunned US and Israeli officials who had believed Australia would vote in lock-step with them against the UN resolution.

And it came largely through pressure from NSW Right MPs who were more concerned a no vote at the UN would offend Middle East and Muslim communities in their fragile southwest Sydney seats ahead of the election.

It is believed up to 10 cabinet ministers, including Mr Carr, Anthony Albanese and Greg Combet, spoke against Ms Gillard's position to oppose a UN resolution giving the Palestinian territories non-member observer status. Ms Gillard also lost support from the Labor National Right, which also met on Monday and refused to be bound to a vote in support of the Prime Minister's position. Only two cabinet ministers, Victorian Right faction leaders Bill Shorten and Stephen Conroy, are believed to have supported her.

Mr Gillard is believed to have argued that a UN resolution to upgrade the Palestinian status to non-member observer status could damage an already fragile peace process.

A ceasefire is now in force between Palestinian militants Hamas and Israel after a 10 days of conflict.

However, Mr Carr is believed to have spent an hour with Ms Gillard before Monday night's cabinet meeting explaining the electoral problems in Sydney if Australia did not at least abstain from the vote, if not vote yes.

Senior Labor sources said Ms Gillard's leadership had come "close to the brink".

"As it dawned on her that she would be in trouble numbers-wise, it quickly came a straight out defacto leadership issue," one senior Labor MP said. A senior minister said: "She came as close as she has ever come to losing her job. She could not have handled this more poorly. She had expected the Right to lock in on it.

"Her leadership would have crumbled around her."

But Mr Carr denied there had been threats or pressure brought to bear on Ms Gillard, claiming that it was common sense for Australia to adopt a middle-road approach to such a polarising issue.

He said she had "shaped the decision and showed smart leadership".

"Australia strongly supports a negotiated two-state solution that allows a secure Israel to live side-by-side with a secure and independent future Palestinian state," Mr Carr said.

Pro-Israel Labor MP Michael Danby, who chairs a parliamentary foreign affairs committee, was reportedly among those angry at the PM's backflip.

Incumbent President Barack Obama has failed to deliver on his 2008 promises, just as Prime Minister Julia Gillard has failed her 2010 promises.

In both the US and Australia, largely Left-leaning media organisations have played down the failures of leadership and attempted to drive attacks on the personalities of their challengers.

In the US, the Obama campaign has tried to discredit successful businessman and politician Mitt Romney with bitter attacks on his religion and his standing with women.

Hopefully both these Godless pieces of Communist Shit are headed for the Exit door of Governance over any free people on Earth

Ditto in Australia, where Labor has mounted an unprecedented and baseless campaign alleging that Opposition leader Tony Abbott is a misogynist and hinting darkly that his Catholicism affects his judgment.

Why is this "Hag in a Bag" so enamoured with Barack Hussein Obama? Why does she want Barack Hussein Obama to be re elected ? It's like Nazis campaigning for THEIR preferred US Presidential Candidate in WW2 on the streets of America.

Surely it's time an American was back in charge of the White House instead of a self described "Community Organizer" 4 years of a President who HATES America, Americans and all it and they represent.

Last month, Obama voters made much of a frank response Romney gave to a supporter at a private gathering.

He had been asked how the election was shaping and replied: "Well, there are 47 per cent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what.

"There are 47 per cent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe they are victims, who believe that government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it.

"That that's an entitlement and government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what. I mean, the president starts off with 48, 49 ... I mean, he starts off with a huge number.

"These are people who pay no income tax; 47 per cent of Americans pay no income tax.

"So our message of low taxes doesn't connect. He'll be out there talking about tax cuts for the rich.

"I mean, that's what they sell every four years. And so my job is not to worry about those people.

"I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.

"What I have to do is convince the 5 to 10 per cent in the centre, that are independents, that are thoughtful, that look at voting one way or the other depending upon, in some cases, emotion, whether they like the guy or not, what he looks like."

There were predictable media claims Romney was being disrespectful of low-income workers but the underlying truth about the spread of the entitlement mentality in the US was unchallenged. Yet Romney had the gumption to stand by his comments, though he admitted they were "not elegantly stated". His campaign, he said, was "about helping people take more responsibility and becoming employed again, particularly those who don't have work".

Many Americans and Australians would see nothing wrong with his approach. As one chatroom commentator noted: "Did I miss something? Since when is what Romney said surprising? Isn't this what we hear on discussion boards and forums, day in and day out from the Right? 'You're on welfare. You want a free handout. I work for a living, you don't. You're lazy. Get a job'.

"Who the hell thinks this is something new? The only thing new about it is hearing it being said in such stark terms from a presidential candidate in this day and age."

Obama promised to lift poor Americans out of the welfare trap but there are now more people on food stamps than ever before.

Gillard's record is just as bad, with more people on benefits and more long-term unemployed.

Obama inherited what he thought was a poorly-performing economy with annual deficits of around $US400 billion. Today they run at more than a trillion. Gillard inherited Treasurer Wayne Swan from her predecessor Kevin Rudd. As Treasurer, Swan has managed to convert a $70 billion surplus into a gross debt of more than $250 billion.

Obama's budgets rely on the US printing more money and borrowing more cash from the Chinese. Gillard's budgets rely on borrowing and money-shuffling accounting tricks.

Both leaders essentially believe in wealth redistribution through big central government.

During the 2008 campaign, Obama notoriously told Joe Wurzelbacher - Joe the Plumber - "when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody". But the Obama experiment has failed Americans, just as the Rudd-Gillard experiment has failed Australians.

Obama's monument to wealth redistribution is his Obamacare package that would centralise greater control of the American population in Washington. Gillard's monument is the carbon tax that affects every Australian, not just the 500 "biggest polluters" she claimed when she introduced it. Both have been responsible for introducing green energy policies that have cost jobs and hobbled their economies.

Neither Obama nor Gillard understand how economies work or how wealth is created. Both think their respective federal governments are the solution, their opponents think they are part of the problem.

Neither leader has shown either a great interest in, or an understanding of, foreign policy.

On Obama's watch, Osama bin Laden was killed by US troops but Obama tried to take credit for the operation. Gillard's foreign forays from East Timor to Malaysia and Indonesia have been embarrassing.

Obama is running on promises of change, just as he did four years ago. His years in office offer little to recommend him.

Romney had an enviable career in private business and a laudable record as governor of Massachusetts. He can point to achievements.

America remains Australia's most important international partner.

We need an America with a strong leader, Obama is not that person.
