“I was pushing my son on to waves and it just belted me from behind,’’ Mr Welsh said.
“I grabbed on to the pinnacle of a rock and held on as it tried to drag me out.... and I won.’’
Witness Surf Watch's Michael Brown who was also swimming with his son described the attack as horrifying and “surreal”.
“I saw thrashing in the water, and the shark’s tail sticking out and then I saw the guy holding onto a rock,” Mr Brown said.
“The shark was still latched onto his leg and trying to drag him off it.”
Mr Brown said if the surfer had not been so close to the rocks, the attack could have been a lot worse or even fatal.
“This thing (the shark) has just come from underneath and latched on…he was just lucky to be near the rocks so he could hold on for dear life,” Mr Brown said.
As the shark let go, Mr Brown said the surfer scarpered onto the rocks, where witnesses helped him and wrapped his wound.
The man’s wife rushed him to hospital for treatment.
Mr Brown said the shark was about 2 metres long and he believed it was a juvenile Great White.

The Chinese data, said the Guardian, cannot be verified because documents no longer exist and what data is available suggests the findings are flawed.
Wong’s defence of Labor’s emissions trading system relies almost entirely on accounts of recent global warming - though nowhere has she mentioned that Europe and North America have just endured a record-breaking deep freeze.
Just as Rudd does, Wong has tried to confuse the public by citing weather events as if they were evidence of climate change to distract attention from the plethora of scientific reports which find there have been no extreme weather events attributable to climate change, human-induced or naturally occurring, in the past century.
The Guardian still wants to believe in AGW and says the “inadequacies” of the IPCC do not undermine the case, “but they do call into question the probity of some climate change science”.
The claim by Rudd and Wong that the “science is settled” is shot down by the newspaper’s investigation.
For over a year they have been hiding behind scientists who we now know have refused to present the data upon which they based their most extravagant claims of human-induced global warming, data which in some cases has either been manipulated or didn’t exist.
In the UK, a court ruled on Tuesday that climate change beliefs should be afforded the same legal protections as religious freedoms. Mr Justice Michael Burton decided that: “A belief in man-made climate change, and the alleged resulting moral imperatives, is capable if genuinely held, of being a philosophical belief for the purpose of the 2003 Religion and Belief Regulations.”
Under those regulations it is unlawful to discriminate against a person on the grounds of religious or philosophical beliefs. Rudd and Wong are relying on that hokey old time religious fervor for their apocalyptic pronouncements and they are urging their followers to drink the same Kool-Aid and believe as fervently as they do - despite the growing avalanche of evidence - as they struggle to keep their flawed belief system together long enough for Labor to inflict its huge new tax on Australians.
With the science behind the IPCC’s reports falling away, the ALP’s religious basis for its new tax system must be thoroughly investigated before it is locked in place.
Simply calling those who have dared question the new religion “deniers” is intellectually on a par with the foam-flecked ayatollahs who routinely berate the “unbelievers” and call for fatwahs on apostates.

A STATUE of US President Barack Obama as a boy will be removed from a park in the Indonesian capital due to public opposition, just weeks before Obama visits his old hometown.

The Jakarta governor's office confirmed that the two-metre bronze would be removed from Menteng Park and placed at the nearby Menteng One primary school where Mr Obama spent part of his childhood in the late 1960s.
The decision comes after 56,500 people joined a page on social networking website Facebook calling for the statue to be removed and replaced by a memorial to an Indonesian identity.
"The Jakarta administration has decided to remove the Obama statue from Menteng Park and take it to his former school,'' city spokesman Cucu Ahmad Kurnia said.
"We follow the aspirations of the people, who think that the removal of the statue to his former school is more appropriate.''
He said a new site for the statue has not been chosen but it would be somewhere "near the school gate so the public can still view it''.
"We'll remove it as soon as possible, hopefully before Mr Obama's visit to Jakarta,'' the spokesman said.
The statue of "Little Barry'' - as Mr Obama was known to his Indonesian school friends - was designed by Indonesian artists and depicts the boy Obama dressed in shorts and a T-shirt with a butterfly perched on his hand.
Mr Obama, who was born in Hawaii, lived for four years as a child in Jakarta from 1967 after his divorced mother married an Indonesian.

Today, we can reveal that online political speech has been dealt another blow with Facebook, the popular social networking site, being accused of political censorship after it removed the group “KEVIN RUDD = EPIC FAIL”.
Before it was removed the Facebook group is understood to have had over 3000 members and focused on building a list what it described as Kevin Rudd’s broken promises.
Whether or not you agree with the argument of the group, surely in a democracy the creators have the right to express their views and people have a right to join and support that group.
The group is believed to have been banned because it criticised an individual, the Prime Minister.
However, based on Facebook’s terms of reference you would expect a group would only be banned if its views were overtly racist or defamatory.
In the case of the Prime Minister you would have to say he has been accused of worse things than being an “epic failure”.
Facebook has previously removed or banned controversial groups which were viewed as containing racist or Anti-Semitic views.
It has also intervened at the request of law enforcement agencies such as when arson vigilante groups appeared in the wake of the 2009 Victorian Bushfires.
Typically, a Facebook group will be banned following the logging of a complaint directly to Facebook.
The Prime Minister’s office has confirmed to The Punch that it did not lodge a complaint against the Facebook group.
The decision to ban the political group because they were critical of a politician represents a concerning development, online civil liberties group Electronic Frontiers Australia told The Punch.
Electronic Frontiers Australia argue that such disputes over political Facebook groups show that there is a growing fight for political freedom in Australia.
EFA Spokesperson, Geordie Guy said the online environment is currently caught in a battle “between people [who are] online and people who would prefer those people didn’t give their opinions”.
The Facebook controversy comes only a day after the South Australian government backed down on controversial new laws requiring people to provide their name and postcode before posting comments online on news website such as AdelaideNow.
The South Australian laws came only months out from the South Australian State Election and critics argued that the measure would severely limit free speech.
Facebook’s policy on political group at remains unclear as the website has not taken action again other Australian political groups such as “Kevin Rudd is a Communist” and “Tony Abbott is a tosser”.
At the time of posting, Facebook has not responded to a request for comment.

A BLIND man was critically injured when an unprovoked attack on his guide dog caused him to plunge off a pier.
David Correa lost his balance and fell into the water at Vuictoria's Hastings pier after an uncontrolled dog lunged at his guide dog.
His distraught wife, Flavia, said he was in an induced coma at The Alfred Hospital after suffering broken ribs, a broken collarbone and a fractured spine. The 34-year-old recently had both kidney and pancreatic surgery.
Mr Correa and his friend John Quilligan were out walking with their guide dogs in Hastings on January 20 when they encountered another dog on the pier. Mr Quilligan said the owner grabbed the dog around the neck and pulled it back away from Kel, Mr Correa's guide dog.
"David's dog spun around that quickly, he let go of the harness and chain. He spun in the air, flipped and fell into the water," Mr Quilligan said.
A good Samaritan jumped in after him, keeping his head above water until paramedics arrived.

NEW British sex education guidelines announced today include classes on sexism and homophobic bullying for seven-year-olds.
The value of marriage and stable relationships to family life will be taught to children from the ages of seven to 11, as well as the importance of delaying sexual experiences.
Education Secretary Ed Balls said sex education needed to be brought into the 21st century as times have changed since the children's parents were at school.
"New technologies and a 24-hour media mean that young people are increasingly exposed to images and content that can make them feel pressure to be sexually active before they are ready and can give them misleading information about relationships and growing up.
"We want to give young people the facts so that they can stay safe and healthy," Balls said.
But parenting groups have accused the government of engaging in social engineering, by "indoctrinating" children into thinking there are no "moral absolutes" when it comes to sexuality.
Director of Family and Youth Concern, Norman Wells said, "The idea of homophobic bullying as a distinct category of bullying is a device used by the gay rights lobby to promote the acceptance of homosexuality as normal and natural.
"But the vast majority of parents don't want their children's schools to present positive images of homosexuality under the guise of combating homophobic bullying."

Mental health expert Patrick McGorry was named Australian of the Year by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd at a ceremony outside Parliament House this evening.
On the eve of Australia Day, Prof McGorry called for asylum seekers to be allowed to live in the community, instead of being sent to detention facilities on Christmas Island.
"Detention centres were, you could almost describe them as factories for producing mental illness and mental disorder,'' the youth psychiatrist from Victoria told reporters after receiving the award.
The other award recipients were less controversial.
Popular TV chef Maggie Beer was clearly delighted to win Senior Australian of the Year.
Trooper Mark Donaldson, who won the Victoria Cross for rescuing a colleague in Afghanistan, was named Young Australian of the Year.
And the Local Hero went to Ronni Kahn, who funnels spare food from restaurants to the needy.
In the past, the Australian of the Year has often gone to famous - and apolitical - faces like singer John Farnham and cricketer Steve Waugh.
But Prof McGorry, who won the award for his work in advocating for early intervention for young people with mental health problems, vowed to take on the Rudd Government.
He criticised the policy of mandatory detention of asylum seekers on Christmas Island.
The Rudd Government has softened the policy of the previous Liberal government, but mandatory detention remains in place.
Asylum seekers had major mental health issues and mandatory detention made matters worse, Prof McGorry said.

CLIMATE sceptic Christopher Monckton says he has evidence climate change is not a problem and that Kevin Rudd's emissions trading scheme is unnecessary.
Lord Monckton said today he had come to Australia to prove the Prime Minister wrong.
The former adviser to British prime minister Margaret Thatcher said Mr Rudd carried out “a 45-minute sustained personal attack” on him last November claiming he had no evidence on the effects of climate change.
“I'm going to say to the people of Australia, when your prime minister said I don't have any evidence, here I am, here is my evidence, here is where I got it from,” Lord Monckton said in Sydney today.
The climate change sceptic will carry out an extensive 13-day lecture tour of Australia at an estimated cost of $100,000.
The cost is being covered by two semi-retired Queensland engineers, John Smeed and Case Smit.
Lord Monckton claims climate change isn't a problem for the planet and carbon dioxide emissions don't contribute significantly to global warming.
He claims world temperatures will rise by just half a degree (Celsius) by the end of the decade, compared with UN scientists' prediction of a 3.5 degree rise.
He said millions of dollars were being made by “climate change profiteers”. “The ETS which I understand your government is proposing to introduce is unnecessary,” he said.
“It will simply be the largest tax increase in the history of Australia.
“All that will happen is that bankers and politicians will become even richer than they are.”
Lord Monckton said his evidence against climate change included the fact tropical cyclones in Australian are at a 40-year low, Greenland's ice cover is increasing 5cm a year and polar bear numbers are on the rise.
